FOCUSED ON THE PRESENT – COMMITTED TO THE FUTURE
Autumn is a busy time of year for us here at the Health Foundation
and the part I like best is to be able to update you, our Donors, on
our recent accomplishments and to bring you greetings on behalf
of the volunteer Board of Trustees of the Health Foundation. We
are very pleased to provide this annual update on our activities
to our many donors, friends, volunteers and supporters – without
your selfless gifts, we wouldn’t be able to continue our work of
increasing patient comfort and enhancing the overall patient and
family experience for our community and the residents of our
area.
WE COULDN’T DO IT WITHOUT YOU!
We want to take a moment to convey our sincere appreciation for your trust, confidence and
generous past support. Amid the challenges being faced by our provincial healthcare system,
we continue to respond and find ways to overcome these obstacles and advance our mandate
all thanks to the inspirational gifts we regularly receive – We couldn’t do it without you! Now
more than ever, everyone and every donation can and does make a difference everyday.
Your Health Foundation’s volunteer Board of Trustees considers stewardship of your donations
as their #1 priority - 100% local, 100% committed and 100% dedicated to enhancing
healthcare.
It gives me great pleasure to welcome Cal Niebergall as a Trustee to the Health Foundation.
Cal’s longtime association with healthcare in our area and in-depth knowledge of the issues
facing us today is a great addition to our board.
The Foundation remains very fortunate to have a team of staff 100% engaged in the good
work of positively impacting healthcare and continually looking for ways to support donors in
achieving their philanthropic wishes. Please feel free to contact any member of the Foundation
Team anytime as they are always available to answer any questions or wonders you may
have.
inFOCUS
Si m p l y GratifyinG . . .
It is simply gratifying to see so many individuals, families and organizations within
our community who continue to generously support the Medicine Hat & District
Health Foundation. Each and every contribution furthers our efforts to take local
healthcare ‘Beyond the Basics’, and for that we are grateful.
Your donations touch lives every day by advancing technology, programs and
services that enrich the care of patients and families at the Medicine Hat Regional
Hospital and Community Health Services.
Keaton Krause is just one of the many lives that have been positively impacted
through your donations. Thanks to a generous gift from Pipeline Grazing Coop,
the Seating Clinic now has an adjustable height mat which helps clients,
caregivers and therapists during assessments and treatments. During a seating
clinic fitting, clients must often make numerous transfers back and forth between
the mat and their new wheelchair. The ability to adjust the height of the mat will
greatly assist with the ease of these transfers for patients and caregivers.
Among the many departments that ensure the highest level of care is available
through your support, the Southern Alberta Renal Program (SARP) recently received
a new medication fridge thanks to the generosity of ACT/UCT. “This new equipment
has allowed us to work collaboratively with the inpatient pharmacy unit to provide
temperature sensitive medication to our patients. Within the SARP Program, Medicine
Hat is unique in the ability of being able to provide this service. Most units must trust
that patients maintain the cold chain when transporting their medication to and from
the unit. We have in fact set the gold standard for safety in the program; this was made
possible with thanks to ACT.” Dale Ross, Patient Care Manager, SARP.
No one can predict when they or someone close to them will need the resources of the
MHRH. Philanthropy is growing as donations now regularly play a key role in purchasing
enhanced technology and supporting particular programs and services.
Your gifts to the Health Foundation can provide assurance that the best care will always be available to us and to those we
love. The investment you make today will benefit our community for years to come. We thank you for your trust, confidence
and past support. In times of economic uncertainty, it’s those kinds of values that keep communities strong.

Clients and families in the PAS Adolescent Services Program have something to smile about. Thanks in part to the proceeds raised through the 2008
Sunshine Benefit, PAS received new exercise equipment and the Group Therapy Room underwent a much needed face-lift.
The Group Therapy Room’s new home-like environment is calming and relaxing, encourages interaction, and is positively affecting hospital
experiences for clients and families. “The changes are amazing! So much more cozy and inviting and we have already noticed a remarkable
difference in our therapy sessions and activities. Thanks SO much!” Patti Wagman, Family Health Nurse, PAS Program.
The addition of the exercise equipment promotes healthier living styles and the kids love the new equipment. “With the use of the exercise
equipment, not only do the students benefit from being physically active during the day, but it also gives them energy and a sense of achievement
to manage their mental health in a positive way”. Belinda Hurlbert, PAS Recreation Therapist.
Community Spirit Benefits Healthcare
The Health Foundation is grateful to have received $25,000 awarded through the Government of Alberta Culture and Community Spirit Grant
Program. These funds have been designated towards the Perinatal Program, EDAC Program (Emergency Dental Assistance for Children) and
Health Foundation projects. Thanks to this grant, these worthy programs and services continue to serve the needs of our community.
These are just a few samplings of the many gifts to the Medicine Hat & District Health Foundation. We are grateful
for each and every donation and thank all or our donors for making it possible for us to take local healthcare ‘Beyond
the Basics”. Together we are enhancing local patient comfort and care through enhanced technology, programs and
Just as each one of us faces the challenge of balancing our overall financial obligations
today while preparing for the uncertainty of tomorrow, fundraising organizations
experience a similar destiny.
When we consider our ability to provide an annual donation to a charity, we typically
look at our liquid assets and cash flow – when we consider a planned gift and take into
account our entire Estate, there is a much larger pool of resources to consider.
It is interesting to note that more than 60% of Canadians contribute to the charitable
organizations of their choice during their lifetimes, yet, when the value of their assets
are the greatest, less than 10% continue this support through a gift in their Will or
Estate plan. By making these “planned gifts”, individuals can continue to make an
important difference in their community through their legacy.
Top 5 Reasons to consider a Planned Gift:
~ Leave a legacy of caring and concern
~ Can be structured to create a perpetual gift
~ Meet critical healthcare needs and “give back” to the community
~ Make a difference now and in the future or to honour a loved one!
~ Part of an effective estate tax planning strategy
However you choose to give, we are committed to working with you, your family,
executors and/or financial planners to ensure your wishes are realized. Such gifts are
vitally important to the Foundation’s mandate to focus on the greatest needs of local
healthcare today and tomorrow!
