2020 Vision

As we go into the New Year 2020, what is your vision? Do you know that you can choose

how to see things? Your vision is not limited to just your physical sight. Let’s look at some of

the things we see and how we can see them.

When your kids misbehave, do you get frustrated and lash out at them? “Does the

punishment fit the crime?” If only we could take the time to examine the facts, our hearts,

and the right course of action. Choose to discipline in love. Choose not to react in anger.

“He openeth also their ear to discipline, and commandeth that they return from iniquity.”

Job 36:10

How about when you encounter someone who is unjust or unfair in the way they

interacted with you. Do you react poorly because of their treatment of you? How will they

ever be exposed to a better way, unless you demonstrate it? Think of how patient Christ is

with us…why not extend that same grace?

“For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to

God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:” I Peter 3:18

Why should we make 2020 different? Consider how blessed we are. God is our heavenly

Father who loves us. He sent His son to die, thus making a way for us to spend all of eternity

with Him. Not because of anything we did, but as a free gift. Ours for the taking; claim

yours today!

“And He is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the

whole world.” I John 2:2

They say 2020 is perfect vision…this is our challenge in the New Year. Anyone can see

things as they are, but try to be the one who sees things through the eyes of Christ. Every

person you encounter is an opportunity to either share Christ, encourage them in Christ,

or encounter their encouragement to you. Recognize that you may be someone’s only

example of Christ. Make sure that you praise Him for all the good things in your life, all the

people that you love, and every good a perfect gift that He has given you.

South Texas Support

Groups, Co--ops, and

all other Homeschool

Organizations!

Happy New Year from the Co-op!

Focus on

CO-OP

It’s absolutely mind-boggling to think that in just a few more months, we’ll be saying

goodbye to the 2019 – 2020 school year! Our children will be moving up a grade,

graduating, and even going away for college! As we reflect on the upcoming

milestones in our lives, let’s not forget the moments that we have now to prepare

for the future! Soon FEAST Co-op will be handing over its administration to the very

capable FACET Board, and we ask that you keep all of us in your prayers!

• Would you like your group information more available to homeschoolers?

• Do you need a location to host a planning meeting?

• Would you love to pamper your group volunteers with a nice meal or ceremony?

• Are you interested in training/workshops on specific topics?

FEAST is here to serve YOU! We get calls every day from families all across South Texas wanting

information about support groups that are near them and/or meet certain needs they have. We want

to put updated information on our website to help direct families toward your group.

FEAST is not trying to take the place of the local support group, nor are we in competition with you. We

know that God has provided our region with so many different “flavors” of co-ops and support groups

because homeschoolers are a diverse group of people.

Did you know that the primary purpose for FEAST is to serve, honor and glorify God by taking

appropriate steps to unify and focus the homeschoolers and homeschool support groups in the South

Texas Region? In an effort to make this purpose more known in the community, we need to hear from

you! We want to know how we can serve you. You know your group and their needs. Let us know how

we can help.

How can you aid us in helping you? These three simple ways:

Check our website and see if your information is listed and is current. If you need to be added to

the list or have information updated, send an email to community@homeschoolfeast.com. If you

can, please include a one-page advertisement we could print and display in our support group binder

in our Resource Center.

As we begin this transition, please be aware of the following:

· The Co-op office will no longer receive monthly tuitions. Teachers will be

accepting their own payments. Payments are still due the first Tuesday and

Thursday of each month.

· Any questions regarding FACET operations should be directed to any of the

FACET board members, or you can email your inquiries to:

FACETHomeschool@gmail.com

Remember, we are here for you! The FEAST Co-op staff will continue to operate

for the remainder of the school year, and we are committed not only to our

families and teachers but also to the Oak Ridge Baptist Church. Our co-op days

will function as normal as we direct parent volunteers, assist the needs of families

or teachers, and address any issues on campus. We ask for your continued

commitment as parent volunteers and monitors. You all did such an awesome job

during the Fall Semester, and we couldn’t have done it without you! As the saying

goes, the family that prays together, stays together and that is our hope as we

transition from FEAST to FACET.

“Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks: for this is the will of GOD in

Christ Jesus concerning you.” I Thessalonians 5:16-18

Email community@homeschoolfeast.com and let us know the answer to the above questions.

Do you need help starting or organizing your group or a sports program? We can help. Let us know

how we can serve YOU!

Spread the word! Homeschooling, in general, is growing in leaps and bounds and especially here in

South Texas. Let other homeschool groups know that FEAST can advertise for them to help them serve

others.

We are so happy that you exist to serve our homeschool community and look forward to partnering

with you to help you continue doing so!

PRESCIENCE IN THE BIBLE

The Bible was not written to be a science

textbook, but where it does speak of

scientific issues (about 200 times), it should

be 100% accurate if it was inspired by God.

We will examine dozens of the examples of

Prescience in the Bible, showing God knew

what He created thousands of years before

we figured just some of it out.

Spelling Bee is a fun activity that really causes your child to stretch toward a goal!

All students, ages 7-15 (student should not have reached his/her 15th birthday on or

before August 31, 2019) are invited to participate.

The Spelling Bee consists of two divisions:

Division 1 (just for fun) is for students 7-9 years of age. The first place winner of this

division will not move on to the Regional Spelling Bee.

Division 2 is for students 7-15 years of age. The first place winner of this division will

move on to the Regional Spelling Bee sponsored by the San Antonio Express News.

All participants of the Spelling Bee will receive a certificate congratulating them on

their hard work in preparing for the Spelling Bee.

Study words are available for registered participants.

city leaders as well as state-level dignitaries. Training the leaders of tomorrow is

very important for the community. We meet every 3rd Wednesday from 9:45-Noon.

Our speakers share about their personal journeys and vocations. They entertain

questions from the students and parents. Speakers can also take questions during

their presentation. It is informal, and Business Casual is our dress. We conclude at

noon with a complimentary lunch.

This class is completely FREE each month, but your donations are appreciated. It is

a wonderful opportunity to meet influential political figures and to educate them

about the values of homeschooling!

All homeschool leaders are invited to come fellowship with others as you glean

from one of the nation’s best advisors on the critical balance of homeschool

leadership demands and best practices for homeschool organizations. This will

be a “potpourri” of topics, and attendees can bring up any subject they wish to

discuss. Carol Topp will lead off with her Topp tips for homeschool leaders. Included

are tips onboard duties, avoiding fraud, hiring workers, IRS tax-exempt status, and

recruiting volunteers. A handout of tips for leaders to share with their board back

home will be provided — lots of time for feedback, questions, and discussion with

other leaders.

Meet Carol Topp:

Carol Topp, CPA is a retired homeschool mother, accountant, and author of 15

books including The IRS and Your Homeschool Organization, Homeschool Coops:

How to Start Them, Run Them and Not Burn Out and the award-winning book

Starting a Micro Business. Carol runs an accounting practice specializing in helping

nonprofit organizations, especially homeschool groups. She is also the host of the

public television show “Starting a Micro Business” and a podcast called Dollars and

Sense on the Ultimate Homeschool Radio Network.

Her website, HomeschoolCPA.com, was awarded a Top Accounting Blog five

times, but her greatest compliment came from an audience member who, after

sitting for 90 minutes, said, “You kept my attention the entire time.” That’s high

praise for a CPA!

Carol and her husband live in Cincinnati, Ohio, and have two daughters, both

homeschool graduates. When not helping homeschool leaders, Carol enjoys hiking

with her family, reading, and watercolor painting.

There is a playtime challenge going on that FEAST would like to share with our

homeschool families. It is called the “1000 Hours Outside Challenge!” The 1000 hours

outside challenge came from a homeschool couple by the name of Josh and Ginny

and their family of five. They were curious to know what the benefits of outdoor play

was for their young children, and they found that there were many benefits for their

children’s mental, physical, educational, and overall health. In their research, they

found that it was ideal for children to spend 4-6 hours of play outdoors to nurture their

growth. Once they began to implement the hours of playtime, they started to really

enjoy the time and realized that it did help their family thrive. Now Josh and Ginny want

to promote more play for kids through launching 1000 hours outside so other families

can thrive as they did.

We here at FEAST are encouraging you to join in the fun and accept the challenge to

invest more time in outdoor play. We invite you to come play at the Denman Estate Park

and be sure to stop by FEAST and let us know how many hours you have accumulated!

THE CAR RIDE HOME PART 4: ATTITUDE

By Mark Maguire – CoachUp Nation

Focus on

SPORTS

From the Bench

LETTER FROM THE ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATOR

The car ride home is an experience that helps define a

parent/child relationship. Here are six topics that have

helped me improve myself, understand my son better, and

allowed him to challenge himself to be the best athlete

he can be. This is your fourth ride sitting in the backseat

of my car listening in on our relationship. And if you’re

wondering… yes, he did agree to everything written.

At the very least, expect THIS from your child.

Theoretically, as parents, we have an unfair advantage of

instilling our will and discipline on our kids. Most of us would

have no chance if we had to sell our will and discipline to

them like one businessperson to another. That salesperson

really must work to sell their idea or product.

A parent can use their authoritative position to demand the

sale, and most of the time, it’s reluctantly bought—I mean

enforced.

I’ve tried to enforce my will and my view about my son’s

baseball on him many times. The more I tried to assist—I

mean enforce—the more he would resist. By the age of

nine, he knew, and I knew that he knew much more than

I did. He said to me at the age of twelve, “Dad, your job is

now to help me with my mind.”

One thing we both agreed upon was one’s attitude

towards playing the game. It is easy to tell on the baseball

diamond— or any sporting field—what a kid’s attitude is

like by what she or he did: were they running on and off the

field? Were they watching the coach when they talked to

him or her? Did they even listen to the coach?

There were always obvious actions, one observed if a

young athlete had a good attitude.

Imagine a batter hits the ball into what looks like an

automatic ground out or pop fly. The batter doesn’t

run at full speed to first base he or she considers

themselves a given out. The observers are judging

the player’s attitude by his or her speed.

Coaches generally want their players to hustle on

and off the field. Look interested. Look alive. Look like

you want to be there. Look like you’re a ballplayer

that cares. Again, this is where a young player’s

attitude is judged.

Coaches love a great attitude even more than a

pretentious skill.

Yes, skill can be obvious, but skill with a poor

attitude is obnoxious.

A lack of skill, or some bad luck out on the field, can’t

be helped, but a good attitude will always give hope

for a better outcome.

One thing is never accepted between my son and

me: poor attitude. Whatever team he is on, whoever

his teammates are, whatever level he is playing at no

matter if his personal form is down, a good attitude

is expected. This is the one thing that he excels

in. Whether he makes it to the top or not, a good

attitude will help him be successful in whatever he

does in life.

If you’re ever going to expect anything from your

child, if you’re ever going to have those challenging

conversations, make it about attitude. Attitude can

be measured and seen. You can’t enforce it, but

you can expect it.

16 MANNA ISSUE 1

In baseball, a simple measure of attitude is how fast

a batter runs to first base. If a batter hits a ball and is

guaranteed to reach first base, do they blast off the blocks

hoping to gain that extra base? Or do they run at 75% with

no consideration of getting onto second base?

FEAST Volleyball has seen some great success these past few

years. In 2017, the JV captured 2nd place at the national

Homeschool Tournament in Omaha, NE. That same team

stepped up to varsity who had only two remaining players from

the year before and captured the 3A National Championship in

Wichita, KS. This past season, once again, our varsity team rose

to play in the championship match, placing 2nd in the nation.

The FEAST JV team found great success this year as well and captured the Bronze Ball

at the National Tournament. This much-talented JV team has many players ready

to step up to the 18u/varsity level. This does not happen by accident or chance. It

comes with hard work and dedication from both players and coaches.

FEAST is offering volleyball skills camp so everyone can improve their skills and

knowledge of the game. This is an excellent opportunity for all players at all skill

levels to come together. Whether you are brand new to volleyball or expect to play

in college, we have a skills class just for you. If you play club, we invite you to still

participate in skills. It is a great way to get in a third practice every week and to bring

teammates together and form strong bonds for the upcoming 2020 season.

December was a busy month for our basketball teams. We started

the month with a lot of great play by several teams in the FEAST

Invitational Tournament on December 6 and 7. Our boy’s Varsity

I team won the Varsity boys division defeating every opponent

by 30+ points. The boy’s Varsity II / JV1 team went 2 and 2 in the

varsity division, acquitting themselves quite well. Our JV2 team

won the 16U boys division. Our 14U boys A team placed 2nd in

their bracket.

On the Girl’s side, the Varsity girls placed 2nd, and the JV girls team won the 16U

division. In addition, our girls 14U, boys 12 U and boys 14U B teams all played and

competed well in this tournament, and we were proud of their accomplishments.

In our tournament, we were pleased to host the Australian South East Storm teams, as

well as get to play games against Australia’s Sheldon school. The photo you see is of all

of these players and ours getting together for a post-game meal at Chick-fil-A.

Our thanks to the parents who gave us donations to help fund this event!

Skills classes begin WEDNESDAY, January 22nd at SA Force Gym (11803 Starcrest)

at 9:30 until 11:30. The cost is $40 per month per player. Grades 5th-11th.

Registration will be open on the FEAST website beginning January 8th, 2020.

These classes are month to month. You do not have to start the first day, and you may

end at any time as well. Payments are due the first Wednesday of every month.

The players’ skills will be assessed, and each player will be placed into the level that

fits them best. Depending on the number of players at skills, other times may be

added in February.

Focus on

SPORTS

Track is More than Running, Jumping and Throwing

Our mission for the track team is “To provide a

positive Christian environment and spiritual growth

through competitive Track and Field athletics to

currently homeschooling families.” A big part of our

team is the culture that has been developed over

many years. While we do strive to do our best and

compete, the bigger part is the friendships that

develop, the needs that are met, the work ethic that

is built, and the Christian values that are instilled and

lived out.

HOW TO JOIN THE TEAM

The track team is open to any homeschool athletes

in grades 5th through 12th. If you have an interest,

please consider joining the FEAST Track team this

year. We would love for you to join and compete

with us.

Online registration will open in January on the FEAST website.

The track registration fee is $75 with a $250 max/family. You

cannot join the team or practice until registration has been

completed. Meet tops are covered by the registration fee,

but each athlete will need to purchase their own shorts from

the online store. REGISTRATION Will Close on January 22nd.

If you have any additional questions about the FEAST Track

and Field program, please contact

Coach Dunn at feasttrack@gvtc.com.

Softball

Patriot Softball is underway! We are looking for at least one

more middle school student to field a complete team.

We are excited to have our first middle school team!

Patriots Softball team meeting was a success as the parents and players

were brought up to spend on FEAST Softball. Coach Doug talked about the

program’s CORE Values. Integrity, Commitment, Service & Sacrifice, Work

Ethic, and Joy.

The first Varsity game is January 28th at TMI. The game starts at 5pm.

Soccer

We are very blessed and thankful for our FEAST Soccer

coaches. Both give of their time and talents to coach our

soccer team.

Coach Joel White is there to assist Coach Rod and the players in many different

ways. The team loves having him as their coach.

He is a Sophomore at SAC studying Speech and Communications. He has been

active in his church through his youth and young adult life, enjoys leading in VBS,

and also with some student ministries.

Focus on

SPORTS

Along with college and coaching, Coach enjoys gaming with his friends, spending

time with his family, and his dog Koda.

Coach Joel has been involved with soccer since he was eight years old. He is an

alumnus of FEAST High School soccer and was invited to be an assistant coach at

his senior soccer banquet by coach Rod Tanner due to his talent and leadership

skills.

Joel is also an Eagle scout and takes his leadership of the students very seriously,

expecting integrity, hard work, and good sportsmanship.

THANK YOU, COACH JOEL, FOR

GIVING YOUR TIME AND TALENT

TO HELP THE FEAST SOCCER
