I picked upanimals, poured small buckets into larger ones and dragged thecontainers filled with croaking, cooing creatures across the road. As lateas the 19th century, scholars had suggested that frogs and mice couldarise de novo, spontaneously materializing from rotting straw or damprugs. How naïve. And yet this late night phantasmagoria of pulsatingflesh seemed a creation out of nothingness. The world had stirred andabruptly given birth to “supernumerous being,” in the words of poetRainer Maria Rilke. It sprang forth from nowhere into the beam of myflashlight. In the bushes an invisible robin sang and filled me withgratitude.My silent exchanges with the teeming throngs of amphibians thesenights soothed my sadness.
