Measure Your Team

for Success

Ever wonder how your team stacks up against the others out there? Not just teams

in your district or state, but across the entire country? Our national performance

benchmark report will help you find out.

We wanted to pull back the curtain and show you the stats. Our analysts compiled

high school performance metrics from all the data Hudl Assist gathers. This report

details national data on offense, defense and special teams, including turnovers

forced, average starting field position, completion percentage and much more.

These benchmarks show what numbers make the difference between winning and

losing. Whether you choose to update your strategy or simply want to see how your

team stacks up against the country’s best, this breakdown of nearly 16,000 nationwide

games lays out what winning high school teams are doing.

4

Offensive Performance

Offensive Performance

The best offenses perform well both on the ground and through the air. They’re able to sustain drives by consistently grinding out

rushing yards and/or completing passes at a high rate. Keep these numbers in mind when judging your team’s offensive performance.

Rushing

Average Yards per Rush

Winning teams averaged nearly two yards more per carry than losing ones.

3rd and 4th Down Rushing Conversion Rates

You have to stay on the field to score. Winning teams convert 9.2% more often when

running on third down than losing teams, and 7.8% more on fourth downs.

Offensive Performance

Passing

Average Yards per Pass

Sure, successful teams complete their passes, but they also know how to turn

those completions into big gains. Winning teams average nearly 2.5 more yards per

completion than losing ones.

3rd and 4th Down Rushing Conversion Rates

Just like in the rushing conversion rates, winning teams keep their offenses on the

field. The squads that pass on third and fourth downs convert about 10% more often

than losing teams.

Offensive Performance

Passing Touchdown Conversion Rate

It’s tough to grind out long drives series after series—never hurts to hit a pass for

a touchdown.

Overall Pass Completion Rate

It’s easy to see the difference between successful passing teams and the ones who

struggle to move the ball through the air. Winning teams complete nearly 10% more

passes—losing teams connect on barely half their throws.

7 Defensive Performance

Defensive Performance

Dominant defenses crush the opponents’ spirits by limiting yards on early downs, forcing turnovers and

hounding the quarterback. Use these numbers to get an idea of how your team is doing in each area.

Defensive Efficiency by Down

An efficient defense is quick to shut down the offensive game plan. Here’s how can

you tell if your defense is doing their job well.

• First down: Gains less than 40% of yards necessary for another first down

• Second down: Gains less than 50% of yards necessary for a first down

• Third and fourth down: Fails to get a first down

PRO TIP

Achieving efficiency on third down is key to forcing the

opposing offense off the field. Winning defenses did this

on 10% more third down plays than losing ones.

9 Special Teams Performance

Special Teams Performance

Special teams might not get as much love or attention, but it’s a critical component of the sport. Often just one or two big

special teams plays can change the outcome of a game.

Starting Field Position

The closer a drive starts to the end zone, the better your chances of scoring.

On average, winning teams got a head start of four yards.

Extra Point Success Rate

Many games are decided by field goals and extra points. Keep an eye on this

data—it could be the difference between a win and a loss.
