ALL YOU NEED
TO KNOW ABOUT
MIANG KHAM
DEVAL ASHOK HARIA
Miang Kham is a snack from Thailand and
Laos, which is a traditional Asian snack.
This dish was introduced in the Siamese
court during the reign of King Rama V by
the princess Dara Rasmi.
The origin of this Thai snack food was in
the northern part of Thailand. It was
initially made by using the pickled tea
leaves known as miang in the north of the
Thai language. This dish was also
mentioned in the Epic of the verse of foods,
a book which was penned by King Rama
ii.
Miang Kham in Thailand was usually gorged
upon when there were social gatherings.
The dish later then became popular in the
central region of Thailand. Miang Kham is
traditionally eaten when during the rainy
season in Thailand, the reason behind this
is that the leaves are known as Cha plus
are available abundantly. Moreover, during
the rainy season, the teal grows its leaves
and its shoots.
In the capital of Laos, Vientiane, the dish
Miang is often cooked in cabbage leaves
known as Kaalampii or lettuce leaves.
Other leaves can also be used alternatively
like spinach etc.
8 IndoThai Lifestyle
There is also a variation of this dish, which is
known as Miang pla, which includes
deep-fried fish, along with the standard
ingredients that are involved.
Moreover, in the Thai royal cuisine, in the
central part of Thailand. An alternate wrap of
this dish was adopted to represent and show
the beautiful and social status like the Miang
Kreep Bua or Miang Kham Bua Lhuang
As you all know by now that Mian Kham Bua
is a traditional Siamese snack dish that was
originated in the central part of Thailand and
is eaten with friends and family.
But what you didn’t know is that Miang Kham
BuaLhuand is actually lotus petals that are
wrapped as a bite-sized appetizer is
consumed in between meals. As the name
suggests, Miang Kham means one bite-size
wrap. Miang means (snack packed in piper
Sarmentousm leaves, and Kham says one
bit in Thailand. Also, this dish can be covered
in many kinds of things like Piper
Sarmentosum and also pickled teal leaves
that are originated in the northern part of
Thailand.
IndoThai Lifestyle 9
HOW IS
MIANG KHAM
MADE ?
The primary ingredient Lotus is something
that is perceived to be an offering to the
monks or buddha. But what a lot of people
are not aware of is that the lotus petal, if
eaten, is actually very beneficial for our
body. Its high in fibre, so it works as
detoxifying and the nourishment of the
health. Lotus leaves can also be cooked
as side dishes with ingredients like Miang
Kham Bua Lhuang, shallots, gingers, chili
peppers, garlic, limes, coconut sugar. This
traditional Thai snack is perfect for health.
While making this dish and before
wrapping the filled leaves, they are topped
with palm syrup or sugar cane syrup. This
syrup is often cooked in with lemongrass,
galangal, ginger, and fish sauce.
This one-bite appetizer has all the bold
Thai flavours in it like the spicy ginger, the
Thai chilis, the sour lime segments, the
nutty roasted peanuts, and coconut. It also
has a sweet and salty shrimp-based sauce,
which is all wrapped together in the leaf,
which is slightly bitter. It truly is an
appetizer and does what it is meant to do,
which stimulates your taste buds and will
make you ask for more.
One Bite Appetizer Miang Kham
Though Miang Kham can be made with
lettuce leaves or Chinese broccoli leaves.
But the taste doesn’t remain to be the same
as It does with wild pepper leaves. These
leaves are tender and fresh, and moreover,
they impart a subtle yet spicy and
additionally a bitter flavor into the dish

2-5 Thai chili peppers
1/4 cup lime segments
1/4 cup shallots
1/4 cup ginger
1/4 cup toasted peanuts
1/4 cup toasted coconut
1/4 cup toasted dried shrimp
IndoThai Lifestyle 11
INSTRUCTIONS:
To Make the Sauce:
For making the sauce, start by roasting the
shrimp paste. Then spread a thick layer
onto the surface of the banana leaf. Fold
the leaf into the package and then place it
on the over for approximately 10 minutes
at 350 degrees. Once it’s done that the
banana leaf that is charred. The foil can be
used if you don’t have banana leaves.
While your shrimp paste is getting roasted,
cut the ginger, the galangal, the shallots,
and lemongrass into small pieces. Then
roast these herbs by placing them into a
pan over medium heat on the stove, then
stir it occasionally until they are dried out
and toasted.
Then place these roasted herbs in mortar
pestle and the pound it until the coarse
paste is formed. Then further add the
roasted shrimp paste and then continue to
pound it till the paste is smooth.
Then in the small saucepan, and then start
heating the paste, which has been
prepared by you with the fish sauce and
the palm sugar over the medium heat.
Further, continue to cook it until; a slightly
sticky sauce is formed. If you think, it is
becoming too sticky start adding water into
it so that it can be thinned.
Now that your sauce is ready to pour some
chopped and toasted peanuts into it and
the toasted coconut flakes.
Steps to Make Miang Kham:
The first and foremost step is to wash the
wild pepper leaves and then pat dry them.
Then prepare the peanuts, coconuts, and
the dried shrimps by roasting all of them
separately in the pan, which is kept at
medium heat. Keep one thing in mind, and
that is, you need to use raw peanuts and
coconut flakes that are unsweetened for
the best results. Now remove these
ingredients from the pan after they are
toasted and let them cool.
Now prepare the fresh ingredients. For this,
you need to slice everything into small and
bit sized pieces. You can thinly slice the
peppers, and the lime can be sliced into
wedges to keep the sin of the lime intact.
How to eat this?
For eating the dish, you need to take one
pepper lead and then spread a dollop of
sauce into the leaf in the middle. Then add
the rest of the ingredients that have been
toasted onto the leaves. Wrap them, so
they don’t fall apart, then pop it into your
mouth. Your bundle of fresh flavour is ready
to hijack your taste buds.

WHY SWITCH TO
VEGAN AND CRUELTY
FREE SKINCARE?
A FEW BRANDS
TO CHECK OUT
APURVA KULKARNI
We’re in the very last month of this decade
and the one thing that’s picking up pace
more than anything else in any industry at
the moment is – Sustainability. With Greta
Thunberg’s speech at the United Nations
earlier this year, the focus on climate
change and the pressing need for all of us
to do our bit for our surroundings is only
gaining momentum. A change in the way
we live, be it a simple modification like
taking your bicycle to work or a
magnanimous change like large scale
rainwater harvesting, we all have become
more aware and more responsible than any
of our previous generations.
14 IndoThai Lifestyle
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO SWITCH TO VEGAN
OR CRUELTY FREE SKINCARE?
While we talk the talk about Sustainability,
we’ve all at some point in the age of
YouTube and Instagram influencers
watched and gawked at the various
skincare routines and headed to the
nearest Sephora to empty our wallets and
returned with bags full of fancy toners and
moisturizers.
Personally, I’d been hooked on to the very
extensive 10 step Korean skincare rituals
publicized by the YouTubers for the longest
time. Each night I used to spend 20 minutes
carefully layering my face with numerous
skincare products packed with chemicals.
So then, what really are Vegan products
you may ask, well they are products that
are free from any animal by-products (bees
wax, insect dyes, milk etc) and have not
been tested on animals. Some of the
skincare brands that I have been using
since are not only organic, made from
natural ingredients but also are not tested
on animals. China as a norm, needs all the
imported beauty and skincare products to
be tested on animals, hence it being a large
consumer market, majority of the brands
tend to adhere to the norm to be able to
cater to the Chinese market.
It was during one of these nights when I
was applying a thick layer of moisturizer
on my face, did I happen to look at the list
of ingredients mentioned on the product
and to my surprise not even one name
mentioned was natural. To add to it, the
product was tested on animals and I almost
instantaneously made a conscious decision
to not buy another product the ingredients
of which I didn’t know or understand and
was most definitely not tested on animals.
My objective was plain and simple – I would
not put anything on my face that I would
be sceptical about putting in my mouth.
So, if you’re considering switching to
cruelty free skincare and beauty products
do a double check to ensure whether the
brand is actually cruelty free or not. A few
things to consider when you’re buying your
vegan, cruelty free skincare products are
– Be sure to always check the ingredients,
to ensure that the ingredients used are
completely natural and do not have any
animal by-products. Also much like the
regular skincare products, all the products
may not be suitable for all skin types and
you may be allergic to some of them, so I
suggest you buy samples, try them out and
then go for your actual purchase.

crafted a range of skincare products based
on this ancient Ayurvedic technique with a
contemporary aesthetic for a better
sensorial experience. All their products are
sourced locally and are manufactured in
Uttarakhand, a state along the foothills of
the Himalayas. I personally am partial to
their Nargis range which not only makes
my skin feel good, but also has a divine
fragrance.
PAI
Sarah Brown, the founder of Pai Skincare
hails from London but her brand name

METAPORA
A one hundred percent vegan and cruelty
free brand from the home of tropics
– Australia, Metapora skincare products are
freshly made in smaller batches with
locally sourced ingredients and are made
from all-natural ingredients. For these
products, once you start using them, you
will see an immediate change in the quality
of your skin. However, since they are made
from all-natural ingredients, they tend to
have a smaller shelf life since there are no
added preservatives. Another upside to
buying Metapora is that they ship their
products worldwide so be sure you check
them out.
A few other brands that you can check out
are Face Food, Kama Ayurveda, Lush and
Holland and Barrett, all these brands refrain
from animal testing and are vegan.
However, the most important aspect when
it comes to skincare is the one thing, we
tend to forget on which is that what we put
on our skin is important, but also what we
put in our bodies - our nourishment and
water intake plays a very important part in
the way your skin looks and feels. The deal
about 8 glasses of water and eating those
greens – is the real thing, so make sure you
remember that too! So, give the vegan
skincare range a try and do your bit for your
skin and for the environment and in true
millennial style,
make #SustainableSkincare trend!

INDUS – A ROYAL
INDIAN FEAST IN THE
HEART OF BANGKOK
APURVA KULKARNI
There are two kinds of people in the world
– the ones who eat to live and the others
who live to eat, I tend to fall in the second
category. One of my favourite excuses to
indulge in good food is telling people that
there is no better way to explore a new
culture or a place than through its food. So,
as I was wandering around the Phrom
Phong area of Bangkok, I came across
Indus - a quaint little Indian restaurant
located in Sukhumvit Soi. Along with a
bunch of friends we decided to explore the
much talked about cuisine of the Indian
subcontinent.
The restaurant in itself has a regal charm
– all done up in vintage Rajasthani style
with plush interiors and stately pieces of
art dotting the walls. The vibe of the
restaurant is very regal and adds up to give
you a true fine dining experience. The
restaurant is spread across different areas
comprising an ornate dining room, a private
dining room for intimate lunches, a
capacious bar to get a quick drink before
heading to one of the dining rooms and a
beautiful garden with alfresco seating. The
beautifully manicured gardens and the
lounge music add a contemporary fine
dining experience to the otherwise
old-world charm of the restaurant.

Martinis and Musings
Known for its Mughlai inspired cuisine and
the ostentatious presentation of the north
Indian fare, I was looking forward to an
afternoon of gastronomical delight. We
commenced our meal with ordering a set
of cool refreshing cocktails from the petite
cocktail menu and the wine list too had a
good selection of local and imported wines.
The drinks arrived almost as soon as we
placed the order and were presented in a
truly exquisite fashion, the cucumber basil
martini in particular was blended to
perfection and was much needed after the
walk in the hot humid afternoon.
Since we were not on a tight schedule, we
took our time to order and when we did,
the spread was enough to satiate all our
gastronomical appetites. The
amuse-bouche as the French call it, was
a surprise presented before the meal which
set the expectation of the meal to follow.
We ordered a selection of vegetarian as
well as non-vegetarian options along with
a basket of assorted Indian breads. The
appetizers from the tandoor cooked in true
Mughlai fashion were the stars of the meal.
The lamb and the chicken cooked in the
tandoor (Indian clay oven) with mild spices
melted in the mouth and had us reaching
for seconds; as for everyone’s favourite
- the samosas, they were well spiced and
crunchy yet not overtly greasy. If you’re like
me and take hours to decide on what to
order I suggest you go with the assorted
platter that lets you taste-test a selection
of different appetizers. Be sure you don’t
overindulge since the curries are what the
place is known for.
IndoThai Lifestyle 25
Getting Curried Away
Curry or “Kari” as it is called in the Indian
subcontinent was publicised by the
Portuguese and the British when they
landed on the coast of southern India
sometime in the 17th century. What is a
staple in most parts of Asia is also a
popular takeout in Europe and America in
the recent times. The curries on offer at
Indus predominately are from the northern
parts of India where there has been a
strong influence of the Mughals in the
Punjab and Sindh provinces. The
butter-chicken cooked in a buttery creamy
tomato sauce with succulent pieces of
chicken went well with the hot fluffy garlic
naans. The raan which is the leg of the
lamb slow cooked for hours and spiced
with cumin, paprika and other Indian
spices had us licking our fingers.
The meat came off the bone at the slightest
touch and the meat had a lovely smoky
texture. The bhagara-e-baingan which is
a rich spicy curry with eggplant made in
the ancient times exclusively for Royals,
hails from the Hyderabad region. The
curry has a nutty and a sweet-spice flavour
profile that can be had with the authentic
roomali roti which is literally translated to
an Indian flat bread which is as thin as a
handkerchief. The option of Biryani which
is fragrant long grain rice cooked with either
meat or vegetables, spiced and coated with
a light layer of saffron is a must if you’re
visiting a north Indian or a Hyderabadi
restaurant. Here at Indus, it is served in an
Indian clay pot accompanied with yogurt
and fried papad.
26 IndoThai Lifestyle
On a Sweet Note
With all of chef Amit’s fare, we were stuffed
to the brim, but of course when has a meal
ever been complete without some dessert?
The very courteous and polite staff who’d
been waiting on us, offered us suggestions
on the dessert specials, and soon we were
eagerly waiting for the hot gulab-jamuns.
For those of you who don’t know what these
amazing balls of heaven are – they are
small spongy balls of flour soaked in a rose
flavoured sugar syrup often served piping
hot with vanilla ice-cream on the side and
just a sprinkle of cardamom to bring out the
flavour. We indulged ourselves into the
syrupy goodness and let the flavours do
their magic.
For the price of the meal, although on a
pricey side, the experience and the food
seem worth it and it truly is an indulgence.
The meal was definitely one of the best
ones I’ve had in a long time and Michelin
awarded to the restaurant is totally well
deserved. After a long afternoon well spent
with food and friends, it was time to head
back out in the city to walk off all the
calories piled on. If you are visiting Bangkok
anytime soon or simply wish to indulge
yourself in some hearty Indian fare – I
would highly recommend you plan a visit
to Indus. Making a reservation would be
advisable since the restaurant is very often
pre-booked for lunches and dinners. Its
located on 71, Sukhumvit Soi 26 in the
Phrom Phong area of Bangkok.

Traditional
Dresses For
Men and
Women
SHILPITA ROY
“The Indian way of life
provides the vision of the
natural, real way of life. We
veil ourselves with unnatural
masks. On the face of
India are the tender
expressions which carry the
mark of the Creator’s hand.”
Known for its unity in diversity all around
the globe, India is a land of varied culture,
customs, geography, climate, and
costumes too. For reasons like climate,
traditions, and culture, both men and
women in the different corners of the
country wear different types of clothes that
they call their traditional attire. It is either
the fabric, or a particular design, or the
style of wearing the dress, etc. that
distinguish one attire from the other. There
are 29 states and seven union territories
in India and almost every state has its own
traditional attire. In this article, we have
tried to enlist the different Indian
traditional dresses for men and women.
34 IndoThai Lifestyle
Traditional Attire for
North India
The north Indian states include Haryana,
Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir,
Punjab, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and
the union territories of Chandigarh and
Delhi. In Jammu and Kashmir, women wear
colorful Pherans (Phyaran) and Shawls that
are unique due to their intricate embroidery,
bright colors, and brocade styles. For the
bottom, women and sometimes men too
wear poots that look like gowns.
Women cover their heads with beautifully
embroidered scarves. Kashmiri men are
also found wearing Goucha that is a long
robe made of pure wool that is tightened
at the waist. In Haryana, women wear short
Ghaghras, that look like skirts, with a
Kurti on top. They cover their heads with
colorful Chunris that look like scarves. Men
wear dhoti and kurta and tie a pagri (turban)
around their head. In Himachal, men and
women mostly wear woolen clothes due to
the cold weather. It is the colorful caps that
stand out in their attire.
Traditional Attire for
South India
The traditional attire of almost all South
Indian states is almost the same. The
women wear sarees, while men wear
dhoti/lungi and kurta or shirts on top. The
traditional for women in Kerala is a
white-colored silk sari with a broad golden
zari border. And men wear lungis at the
bottom and a shirt or short Kurta on top.
On certain special occasions like a festival
or wedding, men wear white-colored lungis
with a golden border that are known as
Mundu/Neriathu. In the remaining parts of
South India that includes Andhra Pradesh,
Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, women wear
sarees of various color combinations,
which mostly include bright colors, and the
fabrics mostly include silk, cotton, and
chiffon. Mean wear dhoti and kurta.

Traditional Attire for
West India
The the states that complete West India
includes Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and
the union territories of Daman and Diu and
Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Rajasthan, that
lies on the northwest part of India is also
included in the western region. Rajasthani
attire is primarily known for its bright colors,
beautiful patterns, and the amazing bead,
mirror, and stone-work on them. The
women primarily wear Ghaghra-Cholis and
Bandhini tie-n-dye sarees. Women also
cover their heads with pretty dupattas/odnis
that also have intricate detailing work on
them.

Traditional Attire For
East India
The states that make up the whole of East
India include Bihar, West Bengal, Orissa,
and Jharkhand. While the north-eastern
states include Assam, Mizoram,
Meghalaya, etc. The traditional dress for
women in West Bengal includes saree,
while for men, it is dhoti-kurta or kurta
pajama. In Assam too, women and men
wear the same kinds of clothes like West
Bengal, however, it is the fabric that
distinguishes one from another. Assam is
famous for its beautiful mekhola-chador,
which is a three-piece dress that is worn
like a saree. Manipuri women wear Innaphi
the shawl, Phanek, a wrap-around, and
Sarong, which is a skirt.
While westernization has brought about a
change in the style of clothing in all parts
of India, people still wear these traditional
clothes on various occasions like
weddings, festivals, etc. After all, it is these
little things that keep us grounded to our
culture and tradition.

JAL MAHAL
THE WATER
PALACE
Jaipur, the pink city of India gets its name
from the plethora of buildings uniformly
painted a “terracotta” pink. The city of
Jaipur is steeped in history and is an
architectural delight. The quaint lanes and
the bustling markets scattered through the
city are a perfect symbiosis of the old and
the new.

APURVA KULKARNI
Hop on in a tuk-tuk or “rickshaw” as we call
it in India or on the back of a dawdling
camel to truly make most of the trip. If India
was a textbook, the state of
Rajasthan would surely be the history chapter.
Adorned with heritage forts and
monumental palaces that were once homes
of the Rajput kings, the city is like a walk
through the antiquity.
In the midst of the chaotic hustle of the city,
a sight most serene is that of the Jal Mahal,
when translated into English, means the
Water Palace. The Jal Mahal seems to be
floating on its own accord in the middle of
the Man Sagar lake. The majestic palace
was never intended to be used as a palace
but was used as a lodge for Maharaja
Madho Singh I and his entourage during
his duck hunting escapades.
The sandy structure of the palace
contrasting against the blue waters of the
Man Sagar lake make for the perfect shots
for the coffee table frames. If you happen
to be an early riser, head over to the banks
at 5.30 – 6 in the morning with your cuppa
chai to watch the sun rise over the lake
and turning the palace and the crystal
waters into a cascade of shimmery gold, it
is most definitely a moment you will cherish
long after you’ve left Jaipur.
The Jal Mahal symbolises the heritage and
the grandeur of the Rajput dynasty and has
a distinctive style of architecture. On plain
sight one perceives that the palace is all
but a single storey structure but it in fact is
an expansive 5 storey palace however four
of them remain submerged underwater and
are not visible when the lake is full. So, if
you do plan to explore the palace, be sure
wear comfy sneakers or flats instead of the
high heeled pumps. In keeping with the
city’s architectural vibe, the Jal Mahal was
constructed from pink sandstones and its
symmetry is what highlights the finesse of
the architects. The roof of the palace, the
iconic “chhatris” that are a key element of
the Rajasthani style of architecture add to
the grandeur of the palace. The Chhatri on
the roof is a big rectangle inspired from
East, that is from the state of Bengal
whereas the other chhatris on the four
corners are octagonal.
The Jal Mahal, in the recent years has been
going through restoration work undertaken
by the government of Rajasthan. The
structure is being restored to its earlier
grandeur and the plans of turning the
heritage Palace into a hotel and a
flourishing tourist attraction are underway.
When visiting the Jal Mahal, apart from
taking in its architectural splendour, be sure
to checkout the picturesque views of the
lake and the surrounding Nahargarh hills,
also known as tiger-abode hills. The
Aravalli range of hills dotted with forts and
shrines can be glimpsed from the roof of
the Palace. The lush green foliage
surrounding the palace and its courtyards
was done in the eighteenth century by
Madho Singh II, the son of Madho Singh.
During the winter months, the migratory
birds flock in hundreds and can be seen
swimming in the lake surrounding the
palace. For centuries traditional boat
makers have been crafting wooden boats
to ferry the visitors to and fro from the Jal
Mahal. The splish-splash of the oars as the
sun sets down and the palace lights are lit
is a magnificent sight.
The Jal Mahal is located on the
Amer-Jaipur road is at a short distance of
four kilometres towards the north of Jaipur.
It is easily accessible by local taxis, buses
or even rickshaws can be hired for a small
fare. What’s more, the rickshawallas will
have interesting anecdotes and titbits from
folklore to share to make the ride more
interesting. The Amer fort and the monkey
temple which are also located towards the
north of Jaipur are worth a visit and are just
a short distance away from the Jal Mahal.

RADHIKA BHASIN
History about the Lanna
Kingdom
What Comes Under The
Umbrella Term, ‘Lanna
Style’
This guide is an extraordinary backup to
visiting Northern Thailand, including
Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and the
encompassing urban areas and territories.
On the off chance that you are keen on the
excellent history of the South East Asian
district known as the ‘Lanna Kingdom’ and
need to find out about the starting points
of the popular ‘Lanna Style’ at that point
please read on. Not surprisingly, there is a
helpful guide at the base of this guide which
shows how the Lanna Kingdom took a
gander at the stature of it’s regional reach,
in connection to the nation limits of today.
Appreciate!
‘Lanna’ is a blend of culture and specialties
from numerous periods and ethnic
gatherings. Engineering, stone work,
bronzeware, flatware, woodcraft, materials,
weaving, form, move, cooking and an
ethnic language make up a legacy that is
venerated and repeated in the 21st
Century.
So here is a pruned history advised so as
to spark your interest for visiting the locale
and ideally get you out of the sham that is
the ‘Chiang Mai/Hill Tribe Group Tour’
treadmill. This guide may urge you to set
out on an excellent experience back
through Asian history beginning in
medieval occasions and completion with
British Colonial impact and Bangkok rule.
42 IndoThai Lifestyle
8th – 13th Century – The
Roots Of Lanna
City states, for example, Lamphun and
Lampang which are presently regions
circumscribing Chiang Mai Province (see
map) were at that point entrenched in the
ninth Century. These urban areas were
established over 400 years before the
establishing of Chiang Mai and a visit to
Lampang (just 60km from Chiang Mai) to
see relics over 1,000 years of age is
strongly suggested. On the off chance that
you have time, visit different urban
communities referenced toward the finish
of this guide as well.
The occupants of Lamphun and Lampang
were known as Lawa and Mon who had a
rich culture. The realms of Nan and Phrae
toward the east were additionally prospering
with an alternate exhibit of social
impacts including the then Hindu, Khmer
Empire.
In the ninth Century the main Thai (Tai)
people groups additionally began settling in
the region. They originated from the north,
relocating from Southern China and Northern
Vietnam in huge numbers. They were
Chinese in ethnicity and were known as the
‘Yuan.’ They are the first individuals alluded
to as ‘Thai/Tai’ and their absolute first realm
began in Chiang Saen in the east of the area
we are talking about.
The Yuan (Tai) individuals relocated south
for the most part because of the danger of
the Mongols, the strong warriors who
administered a large portion of Asia around
then, and were traveling south. The Yuan
realm started in the tenth Century and a Yuan
administration proceeded from that point,
progressively expanding its region
gradually every which way, even into what
is currently Lao.
IndoThai Lifestyle 43
The First King Of Lanna,
King Mangrai
In 1260 the Mongols under the initiative of
Kublai Khan sacked the noteworthy
Burmese Kingdom of Bagan (which is near
Lamphun) and it is during this time the future
first King of Lanna began combining his
position. His first move was to bring remote
territories that used to be a piece of the
Bagan Kingdom under his influence. The
individual who drove this combination was
the King of Yuan, Mangrai who had climbed
to the Yuan position of royalty in 1261. The
way toward vanquishing and union started,
started by the goal-oriented, exceptionally
political incredible war pioneer,
King Mangrai.
We can in this way follow the making of the
Lanna Kingdom back to the Mongols and
the danger they presented to the zone. Lord
Mangrai moved his base north to Chiang
Rai, extended his impact over the Southern
urban areas of Lampang and Lamphun and
got zones the north under his influence
venturing into China and Burma.
In 1292 he vanquished the popular Southern
Mon Kingdom of Hariphunchai thus the
Lanna Kingdom came to fruition. Ruler
Mangrai called his new expanded realm
‘Lan-Na-Thai.’ (which for the motivations
behind this guide I will call Lanna) It interprets
as ‘Thai Kingdom Of A Million Rice Fields.’
In 1287 the 3 Thai/Tai Kings of Lanna,
Sukhothai, and Phayao made a partnership
which prompted the control of Northern
Thailand by Thai lords for the following 300
years. This settlement was significant for
local solidness, and a brilliant period for Thai
development started. Be that as it may, just
three years after the fact, in 1290 Kublai
Khan’s wild Mongolian militaries attacked
Lanna. Ruler Mangrai opposed with virtuoso
guerilla fighting strategies and sharp
conciliatory abilities.
44 IndoThai Lifestyle
After few years, in 1296, Mangrai requested
another capital city to be constructed which
he named Chiang Mai. He considered this
to be the best area for the focal point of his
new domain, with its ripe land, which had a
lot of waterways and a decent atmosphere.
The city immediately thrived to turn into
Lanna’s new focus despite the fact that,
Mangrai kept on living in his favored city,
Chiang Rai.
Ruler Mangrai figured out how to dodge
more attacks from the north through political
dealings and installment of huge tributes.
At the hour of his demise in 1317 his Lanna
Kingdom secured an enormous zone in
spite of the fact that in the following century
it would get much bigger. As an
extraordinary lord, he carried thriving and
strength to the entire zone. Numerous
excellent towns and sanctuaries were
worked during his rule, and expressions of
the human experience prospered. This is
all noteworthy for an overcoming ruler who
was at war such an extensive amount the
time.
Conclusion -
An important thing to note about King
Mangrai, the primary King of Lanna, was
that he needed Buddhism to be a basic
piece of the state, thus ‘Theravada
Buddhism’ turned into a lynch pin of the
realm. Subsequent to King Mangrai’s
demise, numerous lords of the Mangrai
Dynasty would manage the Kingdom of
Lanna, moving authoritative HQ between
Chiang Rai, Chiang Saen, and Chiang
Mai. Buddhism prospered and turned into
a lifestyle for the individuals and
numerous traditions created in this time,
are as yet alive today.

The History Ayutthaya
Historical Park
Founded by Prince U Thong (later known
as King Ramathibodi I), the kingdom of
Ayutthaya lasted from 1350 to 1767. King
Ramathibodi built Ayutthaya in such a way
that the city remained protected from both
invaders and floods. Given its strategic
location, Ayutthaya developed into one of
the largest urban hubs in the world at that
time. Located between India and China,
Ayutthaya was then the hub of diplomacy
and trade and a place where the East met
West and signed business deals. The city
was also a shining example of
craftsmanship and artistic brilliance that
was evident from the beautifully crafted
temples that lined the borders of Ayutthaya.
However, the Burmese invaded Ayutthaya
in 1765 and that is when the Thai capital
came crashing down. The kingdom’s
treasures were stolen, the people were
killed, and many of the temples were burnt
down by the Burmese. Centuries later, the
temples were restored and the site was
given a UNESCO World Heritage tag in
1991. Today, the Ayutthaya Historical Park
stands as a testimony to what used to be
a beautiful and prosperous kingdom.

Places You Must See in
Ayutthaya Historical Park
The Ayutthaya Historical Park covers a vast
area and is filled with ancient ruins that are
a must-watch. Some of the popular temples
and places that you must not miss are:
• Wat Phananchoeng – This is one of
the oldest temples in the site. The main
attraction is the almost 19 meters tall
golden Buddha statue that is surrounded
by smaller ones. You can offer your prayers
in this temple.
• Wat Mahatat – This is also one of the
oldest and most important temples in the
Ayutthaya Historical Park. This temple was
built to enshrine Buddha’s relics and
perform important ceremonies by the king.
Today, one of the most popular attractions
in the Wat Mahatat is the Buddha head that
can be found entwined in the roots of a
tree.
• Wat Ratchaburana – Also known as
the Temple of Royal Restoration, the Wat
Ratchaburana was built by King
Borommarachathirat II in 1424. Designed
in Khmer design concepts, this temple was
dedicated to the two dead brothers of the
king and housed their ashes. Today, this
temple stands as a symbol of what this old
city once used to be.
• Wat Chaiwatthanaram – This is one
of the grandest monuments of the
Ayutthaya Kingdom that was built by King
Prasat Thong in 1630. The temple was built
by the king as a memorial to his mother
and he also enshrined her ashes in the
temple. Located on the banks of the Chao
Phraya River, this temple is quite a serene
place to relax during your trip of the
historical park.
• Chao Sam Phraya National Museum
– Besides temples, the Ayutthaya Historical
Park also has a few museums that display
artifacts that were discovered during the
excavation and restoration work. This
particular museum has on display
thousands of items that include Buddha
images, gold artifacts, votive tablets, and
many other ancient objects that were
recovered from several temples.
The Ayutthaya Historical Park is a
fascinating site to explore and takes you
back to the times when it was a prosperous
kingdom. However, do keep in mind that
you need to dress appropriately before
visiting this place because even though in
ruins, the temples have a religious
attachment with the people of the country.

WHY GO
VEGAN
THIS
2020?
DEVAL ASHOK HARIA
The New Year plans of many people
include weight loss, easier living, becoming
healthier, and doing more to create the
Earth a kinder location. The excellent news
is that by turning vegan, you can achieve
all of these goals — and you’ll also
appreciate sweet, satisfactory food.
One of the most powerful components of
our life is our diet. It determines whether
we will wind up with certain illnesses, which
companies are making cash from us, and
it is a declaration of how aware we are.
Simply placed, when we elect with our
cash, we as customers have enormous
authority–we can bring entire sectors out
of the company. But it extends much further
than the economic element.
Our wellness is life’s most precious asset.
Any opportunity to reduce our danger of
disease should be held severely and
instead promote the coping processes of
our body. There are so many elements of
our wellness in our own fingers! More and
more major wellness organizations are now
saying that eating a well-planned vegan
meal is safe throughout all phases of
existence–and that it is even good to do
so because vegans have reduced cancer
levels, elevated blood stress, elevated
cholesterol, cardiac illness, diseases,
pneumonia, and even Alzheimer’s.
The only subset of individuals who achieve
a standard and good BMI are Vegans–the
more individuals consume pet goods, the
greater their BMI. There are a few
explanations for that! First, the reality that
there are no carbs in animal products and
are greater in fat instead. Dietary fat has
more calories and is much easier to convert
from carbohydrates to bodily sugar than
calories.
The general calorie density of animal
products also contributes to individuals
overeating on them while we can stack and
remain flat on our dishes with potatoes and
veggies. There are also obviously
discovered growth-stimulating hormones
in animal products that do not assist at all.

• Veggie lover Food Is Delicious
When you go veggie-lover, you can, in any

including burgers, “chicken” sandwiches,
and frozen yogurt. The main contrast?
You’ll be dumping the mercilessness and
cholesterol that go connected at the hip
with utilizing creatures for nourishment. As
the interest for vegetarian nourishment
skyrockets, organizations are turning out
with increasingly more scrumptious
meat–and sans dairy choices that taste

their creature inferred partners, and don’t
hurt any living creatures. Furthermore, we
have a rundown of a portion of our

and fever.
• Help Feed the World
Eating meat doesn’t simply hurt
creatures—it damages individuals, as well.
It takes huge amounts of yields and water
to raise cultivated creatures. Indeed, it
takes as much as 13 pounds of grain to
deliver only 1 pound of creature tissue! All
that plant sustenance could be utilized
significantly more productively if individuals
just ate it straightforwardly. The more
individuals who go vegetarian, the better
capable we’ll be to nourish the hungry.
• Spare the Planet
Meat isn’t earthed well disposed of.
Devouring it is really one of the most
noticeably awful things that you can
accomplish for the Earth. Meat creation is
inefficient and causes huge measures of

additionally probably the greatest reason
for environmental change. Receiving a
vegetarian diet is more powerful than
changing to a “greener” vehicle in the
battle against environmental change.
• All the Cool Kids Are Doing It
The rundown of stars who avoid creature
substance is essentially a’s “who” of the
present most blazing big names. Joaquin

Albeit the vast majority is less acquainted
with pigs, chickens, fish, and bovines than
