2019 - The times they are a changin’!
In 1964, when the Mini was just 5 years old,
Bob Dylan recorded his epic song “The
Times They Are A Changin”. Well, the times
are changing here too!
Welcome to the New & Improved, BRITS ON
THE LAKE Classic Motoring Revival – now
including Friends of other nations to begin
a new decade. The last ten years have been
absolutely remarkable. We have made
many new friends and we have seen them
return year after year to be part of this
unique event in our lovely host community
of Port Perry.
This year, we welcome our new sponsor,
COURTS OF CANTERBURY, an exciting new
GERANIUM COMMUNITY, just off of Simcoe
Street North in Port Perry. Please, be sure
to visit the COURTS OF CANTERBURY
Welcome Centre at the show and discover
the advantages of the new homes and of
life in Port Perry.
Well, our event has matured over the last
decade and it is time to make a few small
changes, to expand the horizons and to
welcome new friends to share in our special
time here.
While our Classic Motoring Revival has up to
now placed its focus on British cars and
bikes, it has always really been about the
people – the enthusiasts and owners of
these special motors and the fans who pour
onto the street to drink in the gleam of
polished chrome and bodywork and the
wafting aroma of leather, rubber and petrol.
It has always been about the friendships
new and old and the opportunity to renew
them.
Every year we notice that more and more
fine cars and bikes of other nations are
parked along the adjoining side streets and
in every nook and cranny. And, we talk
with their owners who would dearly love to
be part of this celebration but who have
been up to now barred from taking part.
Well, my friends, No Longer!
We are very happy to open our doors in
2019 to welcome the owners of cars and
motorcycles from Europe and Asia as well as
Exotics and Kit Cars to join in the fun. We
are confident that this will enhance the
spirit of the show by making it even more
interesting and fun, full of greater variety
and it will add even more beauty of design
and engineering to that of our loyal British
attendees.
You will notice on the map that we have
created areas designated as “Great Britain”,
“Europe”, “Asia” and “Exotics” to
accommodate our new multi-national array
of show participants and to add a new
dimension to the “street theater” that is
appropriately titled BRITS ON THE LAKE &
Friends Classic Motoring Revival!
Thank you for joining us. We hope that
your time with us will be enjoyable.
Please, put these few things on your “TO
DO LIST” today:
1) Please, donate to the TOY
MOUNTAIN Campaign.
2) Please, visit the shops and businesses
of our host BIA merchants in Port
Perry
3) Please, stop by the COURTS OF
CANTERBURY Welcome Centre and
thank them for their kind support of
this event
Brits on the Lake & Friends Classic Motoring Revival. It’s the motor event with a heart!

Celebrating 60 Years of Mini!
The Britspeed Mini Cooper ‘S’ at the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix, Schenley Park – driven by Bob DeShane
The Mini is an icon in the automotive world,
just like the Citroën 2CV, the Fiat 500 and
the VW Beetle. It is also the icon of British
pop culture of the 1960s. It was named the
most influential car of the 20 th century, after
the Ford Model T, but ahead of the Citroën
DS and the VW Beetle.
It was designed as a two-door car – with
front-wheel drive and a transversal engine,
designed by Sir Alec Issigonis. The basis of
its development was the fuel shortage that
followed the Suez crisis in 1956. But Britain
was also inspired by the success of the Fiat
500 which was launched in Italy in 1957.
It had its home base in England (Longbridge
and Cowley) but was produced under
licence throughout the world. Well known
licensees included Authi in Spain and
Innocenti in Italy. In England, the Mini was
originally brought out as Austin Seven and
Morris Mini-Minor.
The original Mini Mark I got several updates:
Mark II, the Clubman/1275 GT and the Mark
III. For the bodywork, the choice fell on a
basic version, a station wagon variety
(Morris Mini Traveller and Austin Seven
Countryman), and an open off-road vehicle
(Mini Moke).
A typical feature of the Mini was the
suspension. Rubber cones were used
instead of conventional springs. This led to
an extensive space saving but also a better
suspension. In 1964 the system was
replaced by the Hydrolastic spring system.
In the mid-1960s the Minis were also
successful in auto racing, both in rally and
on circuit. The development of the Mini
Cooper and Mini Cooper ‘S’ evidently
abetted this trend.
In 1967 the Mini Mark II was launched,
recognized by a larger front grill and rear
window.
6
Austin Metro. A Mark V, VI, and VII would
follow.
In addition to its own upgrades and
bodyworks, the Mini got numerous
derivatives, the most important of which
were the Wolseley Hornet and the Riley Elf.
All sorts of “special” versions appeared also,
usually linked to British events.
In 1969 the Mini Mark III was brought on
the market. This
was immediately recognizable by the door
hinges which were henceforth mounted in
the door frame instead of on the outside of
the door. From now on, the Mini was no
longer called Austin or Morris, but simply
Mini. In 1980, it was called Austin Mini
again, and as of 1988 Rover Mini.
The Mini Mark IV was launched in 1976. It
got its engines (1100 and 1300 cc) from the
The British auto industry went through
turbulent years with all sorts of takeovers. In
England the Mini ended up with Rover,
which was in turn acquired by BMW in
1994. The production of this British icon
stopped in 2000 after 41 years.
BMW introduced a new MINI in 2000 that
continues to this day and is available in a
variety of models. It continues the spirit of
the original Issigonis design but in a much
refined manner.
Bill Brack is “Mr. Mini” (aka “The Giant Killer”)
BILL BRACK- Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame Inductee- 1993
To meet Bill Brack today, it would be almost
inconceivable that his quiet and reserved
individual could be the all-conquering face
of Canadian Formula Atlantic racing in the
1970s.
Outwardly shy, Brack was as intense a
competitor as any fellow open wheel racer,
his talent and determination allowing him
to compete in a trio of Formula One events.
He appeared in the 1968 Canadian Grand
Prix aboard a Lotus 47, followed by entries
as an invited member of the BRM
contingent in 1969 and 1972.
From rather obscure beginnings at the
wheel of a Morris Mini competing on the
frozen lakes near Huntsville, ON, Brack
maintained an affection for the Mini make,
eventually racing his Hot Wheels-backed
Mini onto asphalt in the Ontario and
Canadian GT Championship chase.
7
From little sedans to Formula One
machinery, Brack was a perennial threat to
win. But his career was ultimately defined
with his three consecutive Canadian
Formula Atlantic Championship wins (1973-
1975) aboard his Lotus 59/69, a car that he
still owns. It would take no less a talent that
Gilles Villeneuve to finally dethrone the
triple champion.
Drop by to see Bill in front of the Old Post Office. He will be happy to see you and to talk about racing
and his love for the Mini.
