Caribbean Medical University Provides Incomparable Learning Opportunities

Headquartered in Curacao's capital of Willemstad –

with administrative offices in Chicago, IL. – CMU

enrolls classes each January, May and September. The

university offers two main courses of study: a

premedical program and a Doctor of Medicine (MD)

program. The premedical program lasts three

semesters at the Curacao campus and is for students

who have completed less than 90 college credit

hours. Coursework includes organic chemistry,

physics, biology, English and calculus. The MD

program is for those who have completed at least 90

college credits, including the science prerequisites. It's

a 10-semester course that's divided into three

components. Semesters 1-4 cover basic sciences and

are held at the Curacao campus. Semester 5 prepares

students for the United States Medical Licensing

Examination. After passing the USMLE, students

advance to Semesters 6-10, which consist of clinical

clerkships at hospitals and medical centers in the

United States.

The mission of CMU is to educate medical students

in accordance with the highest professional

standards, to prepare clinicians to practice patient

centered medicine of the highest standard, and to

identify and answer fundamental questions in the

mechanisms, prevention and treatment of disease, in

health care delivery and in the basic sciences. CMU

has implemented an entirely new model of medical

education that enhances the university's ability to act

as a transformational agent in the health care field.

CMU's unique approach to medical education

embraces cross-disciplinary teaching modalities,

breakthrough technologies, and innovative ways to

advance training in both basic science and clinical

skills throughout the medical school curriculum. In

addition, CMU deepens students' understanding of

academic medicine by stressing Higher Order

Thinking Skills (knowledge, comprehension,

application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation) tested

in USMLE Step I rather than simple memorization of

facts to better prepare tomorrow's doctors and make

an impact on their career. Students graduate

prepared for the next level of medical training.

USJ represents Catholic education at its highest, university level.

Our university inherits the longstanding tradition of Catholic humanistic education in Macau, which

extended beyond the confines of China to all East and South-East Asia, and the islands of Oceania.

Using English as a medium and teaching C

inese and Portuguese as languages to be known by all, USJ sets the stage for its international staff and

multinational student-body. In our academy, East and West carry on the centuries-old dialogue through

which Macau acquired its unique identity.

Close links to the Catholic University of Portugal and to Catholic universities in Angola, Brazil and

Mozambique, set us in the privileged position of being able to contribute to Macau's present calling as

a bridge between Portuguese-speaking countries.

Our study programmes provide students with the essentials of their major field of knowledge, but

include modules to broaden their outlook on the world and stimulate creative thinking. We care for the

competence of our graduates in their future professions, but our privilege and mission is to introduce

them to a university environment where they learn to analyze, question, evaluate and decide in the

context of consciously assimilated values and culture.

We are committed to improving the quality of our academic life in the light of suggestions from staff,

students and society, to better serve higher education in China and Macau.

Brief information about USJ and its programmes

History

The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) is a local university, established in 1996 by the Macao Diocese and

the Catholic University of Portugal (UCP).

Programmes

Our programmes are accredited by the Macao government and have proven to have good recognition.

This recognition is reflected by the employment rate and feedback received from the job market, which

has been very positive. Moreover, several of our students have been accepted for postgraduate studies

at prestigious universities internationally and won local and international prizes for their achievements.

The main features of our undergraduate programmes are the inclusion of a set of core modules,

focused on developing student's general knowledge as well as on instilling a critical and ethical

conscience and approach to their subjects of study.

We currently offer the following Bachelor programmes:

Architecture

Fashion Design

Business Administration

Philosophy

Christian Studies

Portuguese-Chinese Studies (Language & Culture)

Communication and Media

Psychology

Design

Social Work

Education

Besides, we offer also three Pre-University programmes, all with a 1-year duration, namely:

Pre-University (offered in English) Intensive Portuguese Course (offered in Portuguese)

Foundation in Theology (offered in English)

Features

The multicultural experience provided is also a striking feature of USJ. The medium of instruction for

the vast majority of our programmes is English and nearly one-fourth of our student body is

international, hailing from over 50 countries around the World. USJ provides ample support systems for

its students, including intensive English summer courses for new students, tutorials, English support

tutorials, pastoral and counselling services, a “buddy” system and a small-class size policy enabling

dedicated attention and support to each student.

New Campus

The construction of our new campus in Ilha Verde is nearing completion and we expect to

welcome our students in this coming academic year 2017/2018 in the new campus. Master and

Doctoral programmes, as well as Lifelong Learning programmes will continue to be offered at

NAPE1 or the Seminary.
