Notes for Week 3, 2 Feb 2017

Announcements:

First, we’ll conclude our discussion of Cresswell from Week 3 (see also my slides in

IVLE workbin):

- On page 82, Cresswell talks about the "production of place". Based on his

explanation and examples, think of one way you have you engaged in the

production of place. Prepare to share this in class.

- Cresswell later writes, "For the most part places of memory serve to

commemorate the winners of history" (p. 87). What does he mean by this, and

can you think of examples of such “places of memory” in Singapore (or your

“home” country)?

- According to Cresswell why have some feminists taken issue with the view of

place as home? Who else might take issue with this perspective? Hint: the

Jackson reading might provide some insights into this.

- Finally, what is the Eurocentric bias to home that Jackson talks about? In a

related vein, can one have (or produce) “place” without four walls and a roof?

-

Then, we’ll talk about representing home in the Cresswell pieces. Remember to read

with these questions in mind:

1. How clear is the author's main argument (thesis)?

2. Summarize the main argument

3. What evidence is used to support the main argument? How convincing is the

evidence?

4. What theories or ideas about HOME does the author use? What other

theories might apply?

5. What were the strengths of the paper?

6. What were the weaknesses of the paper? In other words, what could be

improved?
