2017 Winter Edition
It’s A Wrap! 2017 has been one of the most thrilling years of all time. We
really have seen it all! From hosting the Super Bowl, to enduring Hurricane
Harvey, to winning the World Series, it has been an incredible year for
Houstonians. On a personal level, I had the opportunity to travel to Lyon,
France, the gastronomical capital of the world. The city also has a special
place in my heart as it is the birthplace of Claude Martin, Founder of La
Martinière College, my alma mater.
When we decided to do a Winter Print Edition, we chose ‘Glamour & Generosity’
as our holiday winter theme. What else could be more appropriate in describing our
city? Houston’s sweethearts, Brigitte Kalai and Dr. Sippi Khurana, grace our cover, and
represent the sophistication and rich colors of the holiday season inspired by power
and real emotions.
We Houstonians are bound together by our perseverance,
generosity, and determination. Let us all be reverent in our
remembrance of what has been lost, accentuate the positive, and
move forward in unity towards the New Year.
This issue is full of glamour, beauty tricks, and home trends. In our ‘Up Close’ section,
we get an exclusive sneak peek of the Simran Rihal Collection, by Simran Rihal; an
exciting and bold new series of clutches. We also spend time with the woman behind
the Anime Matsuri Convention, and get the scoop on MFAH’s grand upcoming
exhibit, ‘Peacock In The Dessert’. Our Society Section is filled with H-Town’s
hottest galas and parties, and highlights the philanthropy and generosity that is the
cornerstone of our community.
Our city has seen more than its fair share of heartache and tragedy, but these do
not define us. We Houstonians are bound together
by our
perseverance, generosity, and determination.
Let
us all be reverent in our remembrance
of what has been lost, accentuate the
positive, and move forward in unity
towards the New Year. We sincerely
hope you enjoy this new Winter
Edition of LCAHouston Magazine.
Happy Reading!

WOMAN OF
SUBSTANCE
BRIGITTE KALAI
Somethings never change. From
a very young age, Brigitte
Kalai was known as the most
compassionate little girl who
would not turn a deaf ear to someone
in need. “I am always taking care of
everyone, and I do not complain. I
truly enjoy it,” says Brigitte. With a
Bachelors of Science in nursing from the
University of Texas (UT), she worked
as a pediatric nurse at Texas Children's
Hospital. Serving the people and the
community is deeply ingrained in her
heart. "I cannot say no."
Twenty-five years ago, this Native
Houstonian met the love of her life,
Bashar, randomly at a Walgreens. Yes
you heard it right. “You just never know
where you will find your love,” she
giggles. “I blew him off and gave him
a wrong number.” But if you know the
successful business man Bashar Kalai,
also a UT grad and CEO of Amerapex,
he is not the kind that is easily deterred.
While the ever increasing workload of
charity and home life bears down upon
Mrs. Kalai, together she and Bashar
serve the community. They are also
proud parents to 19-year-old Alex, who
attends Rice University, and 16-yearold
Remy who is a junior at the Kinkaid
School. “Humor keeps us going. The
boys are constantly picking on me, but
we are always laughing, fighting and
joking,” she says.
Recipient of the John Connor
Humanitarian Award in 2016, Brigitte
supports, and is a significant donor
to, Methodist Hospital, Nora's Home,
Operation Smile, St. Jude's, UNICEF,
Small Steps, Know Autism, and Big
Brothers Big Sisters, just to name a few.
“There are so many amazing charities,
and so much help is needed. If there is
anyway I am able to support, it is my
privilege.”
2018 will be quite busy for our Cover
ladies. Brigitte is Co-Chairing the 2018
LCAHouston International Mothers Day
Soirée, with Rania Mankarious, followed
by the UNICEF Ball. She is also chairing
the 2018 Una Notte in Italia Gala and
Crime Stoppers of Houston 2018 Gala
with Dr. Sippi Khurana.
When it comes to fashion Brigitte’s
style is impeccable and classic. Heels,
heels, and more heels, she lives in her
Christian Louboutins. A Roland Mouret
dress, Cartier love bracelets, Chanel bag,
brazalian blow out hair with slight flips,
and she is out the door. When asked,
how many pairs of Louboutins do you
own? “I have no idea”, replied Mrs. Kalai.
“But they are so comfortable, the high
chunky heels,” she says.
Brigitte’s neatly color-coordinated walk
in closet is a sea of sky-high heels,
carefully curated with her favorite
Tom Ford black skinny leather pants, a
red V-neck Cavalli sweater, and super
high CL boots. If asked to pick few of
her favorites, she quickly states “the
black Roland Mouret dress, red Dolce
& Gabbana dress with black and red
studded peep toes, a Hermes Medor
clutch, and Van Cleef jewelry. "My
favorite evening dress is a black Gucci
dress with crystals off the runway that
Margot Robbie wore to the Oscars. That
makes me feel like the brunette version.
In my own mind I felt like a star”, she
laughs.
Do you follow trends?
“No, I really wish people wouldn't just
follow trends because not all trends suit
all body types or ages. I think people
should be loyal to their own individual
style, but add some of the latest trendy
pieces accordingly.”
Martin B. Cominsky, President and CEO
of Interfaith Ministries (IM), informed
LCAHouston about the magnanimous
gift, a $1 Million commitment from
you Brigitte and Bashar, that allows IM
to break new ground on a wonderful
symbolic representation of ‘respect for
thy neighbor’ in the Greater Houston
area. WOW, that’s incredible! Tell us
more.
Brigitte with son Remy at LCAHouston's 2017
Mothers' Day Soirée | Photo By Sonya Abid
"The Plaza of Respect will be a stunning
outdoor space in the heart of Midtown,
which will offer the community a
gathering place, inspiring artwork,
and an educational component about
the many faiths of Houston but most
importantly help IM's Meals on Wheels
for Greater Houston which delivers
more than one million meals each year
to seniors in Harris and Galveston
counties, the refugee services which,
in conjunction with the U.S. State
Department, resettles hundreds
of refugees in Houston each year,”
explains Brigitte. "We believe in you, the
international media, and its importance
in this country. I am half Egyptian and
half American and so blessed to grow up
in a diverse city like Houston.”
"Yes, this was a big commitment for us,
but we believe in peace and harmony,”
she says. Brigitte's generosity is not
calculative, she is simply and genuinely
a loving and giving person. She is fully
aware of the potential danger of too
much exposure. Regardless, she manages
to remain below the radar and still
support and help local charities and
Houston businesses. “It’s important. We
all have a responsibility.”
In spite of their extremely busy
schedules, Brigitte and Bashar manage to
successfully instill in their children the
values of hard work, and that the concept
of serving the community is the highest
privilege.
What's a typical day for Mrs. Kalai?
"Oh boy! It starts very early. Someone
better bring me my Starbucks so I get
started,” she jokes. "I have been a stay at
home mom for few years now, but being
involved with various charities, whether
on the board or chairing it, is a full time
job. I think it’s important that a woman
finds her passion. I feel happy supporting
the community as it sets a positive
example for my children.”
After the interview, I find Brigitte
has slipped into her off-the-runway
burgundy satin gown by Rubin Singer
for our photo-shoot. With a team of
photographers, make up artists and
assistants, and extreme rush-rush
schedule, Brigitte stops to attend to
everyone’s needs, and we admire her for
that.

Q&A
RM: Any hidden talent?
BK: I used to be a champion jump
roper, including double dutch with all
the crazy tricks. I am not sure I am still
that good with tricks, but decent!
RM: Guilty pleasure...
BK: Popeye's Chicken (Ha ha).
RM: You love this city because...
BK: I love this city because it is home
and feels like home, and no matter
where I go around the world, I can't
wait to come back here. The people are
amazing, the arts and culture, the med
center, food, fashion, Astros, Rockets,
and Texans. Everything really is bigger
and better here!
RM: Favorite Romantic City?
BK: Paris, France.
RM: Most bizarre comment?
BK: People are shocked that I went
to Debakey High School for Health
Professions and ask me if I actually
graduated from there because I
apparently don’t seem nerdy enough
(code for smart enough I think). Also,
people always seem to be shocked that
I am a nurse and can handle the sight
of blood and emergencies.
RM: Best compliment?
BK: It has to be that I am a good mom,
but I’m not sure my kids would agree!
RM: On the cover you are wearing?
BK: Off-the-runway Rubin Singer
gown that was custom made to benefit
the Fashion For Fashion luncheon; my
tall Jimmy Choos; bracelets from Van

necklace is a custom necklace made
especially by Franco Valobra which we

Sippi's name is synonymous
with glamour and charity in
Houston. With an endless
resume of humanitarian
efforts, where does one even begin
to describe her? With traditional
values and modern thinking, she very
stylishly balances fashion, family and,
philanthropy. “Our parents have been
our biggest blessings, role models, and
cheerleaders. They were immigrants
who came to this country penniless,
and worked their way up to becoming
the successful and upstanding
members of society that they are today.
They taught me how to sacrifice for the
good of our children, and that there
is no greater gift than a strong, wellrounded
education.”
Certainly ‘Best Dressed’ and very
stylish, Sippi is the true example
of beauty and brains. She is a
Rheumatologist, Immunologist, and
Internist, and is board certified in
Rheumatology and Internal Medicine.
And, if that isn’t enough, Sippi’s most
notable title and job is that of Wife and
Mother. She is married to the love of
her life, Ajay Khurana, who currently
is the Co-Head of Energy for the
Americas, and is Managing Director
at Jefferies and Co. They are parents
to 8-year-old Shaan and 2-yearold
Seva. “I often get the comment,
‘How do you do it all? How do you
have the time to fit it all in?’ At first,
it used to be a thorn in my side as I
thought it was implying that if I was
succeeding in certain aspects of my
life, I must be deficient in others. But
now, perhaps, it has turned into my
favorite compliment. I think women
are always trying to do it all, or have
it all, and I feel it is a pat on the back,”
she smiles.
“I've always loved fashion. I play with
different styles depending on the
occasion, and I love color. Designers
Elie Saab, Tom Ford, and J. Mendel
are effortlessly glamorous and figureflattering,
while interweaving a
modern twist to a classic design. On
a local level, I am a big fan of David
Peck as he makes your clothes fit to
perfection,” shares Sippi. "However
if I had to describe my personality it
would be a shirt-dress with low heel
WOMAN OF
SUBSTANCE

pumps that takes you through the entire
day. Flexible, uncomplicated, and smart
-characteristics I hope to emanate.”
How do you feel about "colored" furs for
the winter? “Is it a hit or a miss? I love
them, just as long as they are faux fur.”
Award and will end with the prestigious
Greater Houston Women's Hall of Fame
Gala. The event will honor women who
have contributed significantly to the
advancement of women, and improved
the quality of life for future generations.
She hopes to combine her knowledge
and love for family, medicine, and
philanthropy to make a difference in the
lives of fellow Houstonians and those
suffering worldwide. “Life is short and
what matters most is our best effort in
furthering humanity. We must be people
for others first,” explains Sippi.

Mothers' Day Soirée | Photo By Sonya Abid
Being a native Houstonian, she is
incredibly proud of this great city, and is
dedicated to improving issues at home by
giving back to the local community and
worldwide. Whether it’s as the Founding
Member and Contributor to the
Swadesh Khurana Endowed Fellowship
benefitting Stroke Care at The Houston
Methodist Willowbrook Hospital,
a fellowship that was established in
loving memory of her Mother-inlaw,
or as a member of the Board of
Directors for The Houston Symphony,
UNICEF Southwest Region, Pratham
USA, American India Foundation,
the Interfaith Ministries of Greater
Houston, Sippi is fully engaged with the
community.
Alongside Brigitte Kalai, she is chairing
the 2018 Audrey Hepburn Society
Ball for UNICEF, and the Crime
Stoppers of Houston Gala. Amongst
numerous awards and accolades, I think
Houstonians loved her in the role of an
emcee at our very own International
Mothers Day Soirée, with KPRC Channel
2 Anchorman Andy Cerota. Would you
be a TV Anchor if given the chance? “In
a heartbeat! I have always loved public
speaking and feel the job of a journalist
is such a vital one. It is at the very heart
of democracy.”
This year has been incredible. It started
with ABC 13’s Woman of Distinction
RM: What is the one thing that you
would like to change about how
people decide on what is fashionable
and what isn't?
SK: I would change the amount
of pressure women feel to be
fashionable ALL of the time.
Whatever happened to wearing your
shabby clothes to the gym?
RM: What do you think the number
one trend is this season?
SK: Animal print is back, baby!
RM: Favorite restaurants?
SK: My H-Town favorites include
Kiran's, La Table, Cafe Annie,
DaMarco, and newcomer a'Bouzy.
RM: Shoes or handbags?
SK: Definitely shoes!
RM: Favorite place for a romantic
getaway?
SK: Los Cabos.
RM: Strong or sensitive?
SK: Sensitive. I think there is a
lot of negativity in the workplace
around women perceived as being
"sensitive". However, as a physician,
I have always felt that my sensitivity
(collated as sympathy and empathy)
has been my strongest asset, and an
important characteristic in bringing
me closer to my patients.

CELEBRITY
Stand by Me:
Michael Bolton and Angie
Harmon stood tall at the 4th
Annual UNICEF Audrey Hepburn
Society Ball
Spotting A-List celebrities in
Houston is a trend on the rise.
This summer, Houston rolled
out the red carpet for the 4th
Annual Audrey Hepburn Society
Ball at the Marriott Marquis. The gala
celebrates UNICEF‘s life saving work for
children around the world and honors
outstanding humanitarians that make
this possible. And this was most certainly
a star studded gala.
The event emceed by Great Day
Houston host Deborah Duncan and
featuring a special performance by
Michael Bolton, celebrated UNICEF’s
lifesaving work and honored UNICEF
Ambassador and actor Angie Harmon
with the Spirit of Compassion Award.
Since her appointment as a UNICEF
Ambassador in 2013, Angie has served
as a spokesperson for UNICEF USA’s
End Trafficking Initiative, and has
traveled to Vietnam to bring awareness
to UNICEF’s lifesaving programs for
children. Guests were mesmerized by
a moving performance from multiple
Grammy Award winner Michael Bolton,
who sang his hit classic “When a Man
Loves a Woman,” and a cover of “Stand
by Me.” It was an emotional evening for
Angie Harmon who had no idea that
her daughters would present her with
the award. She wiped away tears of joy
and delight as she spoke to the audience
about the significance of giving back, and
her determination to help end the serious
crime of sex trafficking. “It’s an honor to
be accepting this award here tonight, and
to have my daughters present it to me is
just such a highlight in my life. What
makes UNICEF so powerful is everyone
working towards the same goal,” Harmon

Mayor of Houston Sylvester Turner
said. “UNICEF succeeds because across all nations, all
political affiliations, all regions, and all countries, we want
children to live full and healthy lives. I’m honored to think
of the words of Audrey Hepburn who said 'as you grow
older, you will discover that you have two hands – one that
is for helping yourself and the other is for helping others.'
We can all make a difference in this world because amazing
changes are truly possible.”
LCAHouston also had the honor to speak to Michael
Bolton who shared: “I’m really happy to hear that UNICEF
is stepping up to fight human trafficking. It’s not that there
wasn’t enough reason already. UNICEF helps more children
than any organization on Earth to feed them, educate them,
and provide for them.” Bolton also expressed his desire to
perform in India, adding “I absolutely love A.R. Rehman.”
Margaret Alkek Williams, Barron Segar, and Honoree Rosanette Cullen
Rosanette and Harry Cullen were presented with the
Margaret Alkek Williams Humanitarian Award for their
extraordinary contributions to the causes of children,
health, and education in the city of Houston and the state
of Texas through the Cullen Foundation. Since 1947, the
Cullen Foundation has distributed more than $450 million
in grants to support education and health care initiatives,
notably at the University of Houston and at hospitals in the
Texas Medical Center, as well as the cultural arts and many
other causes.

LEGACY
Lyon to Lucknow: A Golden Journey
By Tazeen Husain
16
It is said that a New York Times reporter who accompanied the victorious British army that entered
Lucknow in 1858, after India's First War of Independence, had called the stretch of road from Rumi
Darwaza to Chattar Manzil, the most beautiful and spectacular cityscape that he had ever seen, better
than Rome, Paris, London, and Constantinople.
LCAHouston.com 2017
Known as the City of Nawabs, the Golden City of
India, Constantinople of the East, and Shiraze-Hind,
Lucknow has inspired many a name.
Poets have waxed eloquently about its pleasant
evenings, its refined language, its syncretic culture, its
Awadhi cuisine, and the incredible warmth of its people.
Though now struggling to accept aspects of the modern
world, such as metro trains, shopping arcades, and an ever
increasing population, the city still manages to retain its
character. The architectural legacy of the city forms small,
anachronistic islands in the rush and tumble of chaotic
everyday traffic and life.
These havens of peace
and solitude take you
back to a different era
when the Nawabs ruled
over this city, when its
culture was at its peak,
and all forms of dance,
music, and art enjoyed
their royal patronage.
Historically, the capital of
Awadh was controlled by
the Delhi Sultanate, which
then came under the
Mughal rule. It was later
transferred to the Nawabs
of Awadh. In 1856,
the British East India
Company abolished local
rule, and took complete
control of the city along
with the rest of Awadh,
and in 1857, transferred it
to the British Raj.
The Nawabs and the
British have long since
disappeared, but the
architectural heritage is
still very much a part of
this beautiful city. Though
you will find fabulous
arches, gateways, and
gazebos in plenty, there are also a few historical buildings
that enjoy immense popularity amongst locals and tourists
alike.
The Bara Imambara is one such historical landmark. It is
also known as the Asafi Imambara and was built by Asafud-Daula,
the Nawab of Awadh, in 1784. An imambara
is used for azadari, mourning in commemoration of the
martyrdom of Imam Hussain by Shia muslims. Since the
Nawabs were Shia, the Bara Imambara was a reflection
of the grandeur and magnificence of their rule. The Bara
Jama Masjid, Asafi Imambara, Lucknow, India
Rumi Darwaza seen from Imambara, Lucknow, India
Imambara is amongst the grandest buildings of Lucknow,
and includes a mosque, and a large step-well or ‘bowli’ .
In the late 18th century, Avadh was reeling under a severe
drought. To provide relief and employment to his people,
Nawab Asaf-ud-Dauladecided to build the structures. He
invited bids, which were won by Hafiz Kifayat Ullah, an
architect from Shahjahanabad (present day Old Delhi).
Work on the building started in 1784, and finished fourteen
years later. The architect was faced with the challenge of
building a 170ft x 55ft central hall for prayer, but without
any columns supporting its ceiling and mammoth dome.
Building it by conventional means would have required
columns to bear the
load of the ceiling, so
the ingenious architect
decided to work on
reducing the weight of
the ceiling by making it
hollow. Great effort was
taken in designing this
part of the building as
beautifully as any other
part of the Imambara.
The result is the Bhool
Bhulaiya, a labyrinth
of interconnected
passageways and
doors. There are nearly
a thousand such
passageways, and most of
them lead you nowhere
but to another passage. If
you enter the labyrinth,
it is quite easy to get lost.
Some open into windows
that give you amazing
views, and others take you
up to the very ceiling.
The Rumi Darwaza
(sometimes called the
Turkish Gate), in the
city of Lucknow, is an
imposing gateway built
under the patronage
of Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula in 1784. It is an example of
exquisite Awadhi architecture, and is now synonymous
with Lucknow, appearing on all print material as the
recognized symbolic entrance to the city. It is said that
a New York Times reporter who accompanied the
victorious British army that entered Lucknow in 1858,
after India's First War of Independence, had called the
stretch of road from Rumi Darwaza to Chattar Manzil,
the most beautiful and spectacular cityscape that he
had ever seen, better than Rome, Paris, London, and
Constantinople. The Rumi Darwaza stands 60 feet tall, and

is modelled after the Sublime
Porte (Bab-i Hümayun) in
Istanbul, formally known as
Constantinople, which was
the capital of the Byzantine
Empire. It is said that the gate
provides different perspectives
from each view, appearing
open and welcoming from one
side, and slightly closed and
narrow from the other.
The most unique thing about
the Chattar Manzil of Lucknow
is the strikingly different
architecture, specially the
umbrella-shaped dome from
which it derives its name. The
construction also has some
unique elements of European
architecture, showing the
influence of French design.
La Martinière College in
Lucknow, established in 1845,
was founded in accordance
with the will of Major General
Claude Martin. As per his
wishes, certain funds were
allotted for the establishment
of schools in Lyon, France
(his birth place), Calcutta, and
Lucknow. The La Martinière
Boys College occupies a
campus of almost 200 acres,
part of which is now used by
the Lucknow Golf Club, and
Alley in the Bhool-Bhulaiyya (Labyrinth) of Asafi Imambara, Lucknow, India
also includes a village called
Martin Purwa (named after
Claude Martin), as well as
part of the Lucknow Zoo.
The main college building
is an architectural marvel of
unique design. The terrace at
Constantia is guarded on two
sides by massive lion statues
that have glowing lamps placed
in their eyes, which are visible
from afar. Exquisite statues
stand amidst column remnants
of a lost era. Its ceilings are
adorned with beautiful stucco
and fresco work, and a stained
glass window is a prominent
feature in the chapel.
The school has also been
mentioned in several fictional
works, including Qurratulain
Hyder’s Aag ka Darya (River of
Fire), and Valerie Fitzgerald’s
1981 historical novel,
Zemindar.
These monuments form the
heritage that the city lovingly
embraces, as it struggles to
balance the old and the new.
It still manages to retain its
glorious legacy as the demands
of an increasingly modernized
world threatens to engulf it.

La Martinière: A Royal Legacy
It is not just a school. It is an institution of perfection, class and
elegance. At the heart of the vision of the school are the beliefs of its
founder Major General Claude Martin and the strong connection that
the school and its students share with France.

LEGACY
By Ruchi Mukherjee
Every La Martinière student in
India dreams of one day visiting
Lyon, France, the birthplace of the
school's founder Claude Martin.
Lyon, the earliest protected area of
France and a UNESCO World heritage
Site, is a bustling metropolitan city full
of hidden treasures in its quaint and
beautiful “traboules,” or passageways. It
is known, not only for the captivating
charm of its historical museums and
heritage sites, but also for its Lyonnais
Bouchons serving mouthwatering
French cuisine, making Lyon rightfully
the gastronomic capital of the world.
However, as a Martinian, I share a
unique bond with Lyon. Every student
of La Martinière develops a deep
French connection with the city, as it
is the birthplace of the Founder of the
La Martinière Schools in India and in
France. I traveled to the magical city of
Lyon on September 13th to take part in
the Founder's Day Celebration honoring
Claude Martin, a tradition that binds
Martinians around the world.
La Martinière for Girls Kolkata, India,
a School in its 182nd year, is known for
creating students of character, instilling
in them not only knowledge, courage,
and skills to take on the challenges of
the world, but to give back to society so
that they may create a more progressive
world. It is not just a school. It is an
institution of perfection, class, and
elegance. At the heart of the school’s
vision are the beliefs of its founder
Major General Claude Martin, and the
strong connection the school and its
students share with France. Ms. Danielle
Martinod, who works to promote the
educational and cultural partnerships
between the schools in India and
France, hopes to impart to the students
a knowledge of the rich history of the
institution and philanthropic ideals of
the founder. "This year, for the first time,
the President and the Head of Alliance
Francaise of Lyon, have shared this
tribute with all of us, to officially sign an
agreement which is aimed at facilitating
the registration of more Indian students
in Lyon", she said.

LEGACY
Do you know there are seven sister
schools in India (Kolkata and
Lucknow) and France (Lyon) ?
These schools of excellency are named
La Martinière after Major General
Claude Martin, born in Lyon (1735),
who died in Lucknow in 1800 leaving a
tremendous amount of money for the
creation of schools for boys and girls in
his home town and in India where he
had spent all his life.
La Martinière
Linking India and France
A Historic Affair
By Martine Chevallier Queyron
Claude Martin left Lyon at the age of
16. One of a large family, he enrolled
in the French Army and left for India
which he reached after six months of
dangerous sailing. The following 15 years
of his life in India, with the French army,
then with the British Army, then on his
own, are just a succession of incredible
adventures, meetings, and inventive
decisions. He then settled in Lucknow
and as a very ingenious man, put his
talents in action to develop agriculture,
medical and scientific experiments,
business, and diplomacy with the local
Nawabs and the British rulers. He died at
the age of 65 and was buried in Lucknow,
according to his will, deep under his
Palace of Constantia.
His 85 page Will described in detail what
should be done with his belongings,
the people who lived with him, and his
money. Part of this long list was the
creation of schools for boys and girls,
for them to develop skills and be part of
the development of their country. These
schools were to be built in Kolkata and
Lucknow where he had worked and
lived, and in Lyon, where he was born
and which he had never forgotten.
A special board was created in Lyon,
the Claude Martin Foundation, to
take care of the use of this money. The
schools were founded starting in 1826,
progressively, until today, we have
three La Martinière schools in Lyon:
La Martinière Terreaux Diderot, La
Martinière Duchère, and La Martinière
Monplaisir. Four schools in India as they
are for boys or girls in Kolkata and in
Lucknow.
Palais de Justice Lyon, France
The French schools have become state
schools. They cover in their courses all
the teachings one can imagine: from
clothes styling to engineering, social
work to building, and from business
to expert chemistry or biology. The
schools in India are private and more
academically classical in their teaching,
but always aiming at excellence which
brings the students to a high level
acknowledged by Universities in India
and abroad.
The seven schools have a great deal in
common including their history, their
goals to make it possible for all children
to reach their best, and thoughts and
thanks for their Founder Claude Martin!
Every year, on the date of his death,
September 13th, The schools organize
celebrations and speeches in his memory.
Each school thinks of its sister schools so
faraway, and yet so close.
Different exchange programs have
already taken place, for adults and
students. The schools in India try to
develop the teaching of French with the
help of the Alliance Française. Students
in France usually speak sufficient English
to hold a conversation when in India.
The Principals of the seven schools are
in touch and willing to develop more
partnership. Some Indian students have
already been able to complete their post
graduation studies in France, with the
help of the schools, the Claude Martin
Foundation and the Old Martinians
Society. The schools have developed a
network of alumni throughout the world.
They meet and never forget they once
were students at La Martinière, whether
they become politicians, scientists,
business men, inventors, teachers, or
doctors. The alumni societies can be
found on the five inhabited continents,
and the one in Lyon celebrates its 150th
anniversary this year!
Claude Martin hoped that his money
would develop education, and in doing
so encourage friendship and peace
between people. No doubt the links
woven between the schools stem from
this idea. Claude Martin’s moto was
"Labore et Constantia" which means "By
Labor and Constancy." It is still the base
of a La Martinière student's curriculum
and a motivation for them as an adult.

My Life,
Anime Matsuri
Style
By Valerie Sweeten
Deniece P. Leigh had a passion
that changed her life forever.
She was inspired early
in life watching the
Robotech/Macross anime saga.
After visiting Japan in 2004,
she fell in love with Japanese
culture. It was her hope
then, and now, to share her
experiences of Japan with the
world. Her vision has evolved into
the incredible Anime Matsuri
Convention, and the launch
of her boutique, Shop in
Wonderland which captures
the heart of Japanese
fashion. The Convention
is traditionally held in
March and April at
the George R. Brown
Convention Center
in Houston. This
celebration of Japanese
pop-culture started
in 2007, and has grown to
become the second largest anime convention
in North America, boasting over 36,000 attendees in 2017
alone. The draw is the unique presentation of the entire
Japanese experience. Visitors can explore animation, music,
fashion, cosplay, gaming, and related arts and technology
that have been influenced by Japan.
“One big part of the convention is Cosplay, in which
attendees and guests dress up as their favorite anime/
comic/game character,” says Leigh. “A highly anticipated
new event is the Pro/Cosplay Contest. This event will
have some of the celebrity cosplay guests competing and

entertaining the audience for their votes on
the main stage." One of the celebrity guest
judges will be Michele Clapton, twotime
Emmy Award Winning Costume
Designer for the HBO series "Game
of Thrones,” and Winner of Costume
Designers Guild Award for Netflix
series, "The Crown." Proceeds will be
donated to the National Alliance On
Mental Illness. Leigh may have been
inspired initially by the Japanese
culture, but it is the fans that
keep the dream alive. “We bring
things in a different way. We
take something from Japan
and create it for an American
audience. We make it huge.
The most important thing is
to connect with our fans.
We have amazingly
loyal fans,” Leigh said.
The fashion aspect is
also phenomenally
popular at Anime
Matsuri, with
over 5,000 people
attending the
convention,
specifically for
this reason. Seeing
the high demand
for Japanese
fashion led
Leigh to open
her new
boutique,
Shop In
Wonderland,
which is the
only Japanese
fashion
boutique in
the Central
South United
States. Located
at 9899 Bellaire Boulevard, the boutique
carries playful, doll-style clothing, and
unique accessories that highlight the
latest trends in the industry.

When you first open a bottle
of wine, most people are
curious about first, where
this wine came from, or
secondly, who is the producer? For one
Chilean wine, the story of the vineyard
and winemakers involved gets a little
more complicated.
The story began in September of 2006,
when Rafael Prieto attended a wine
tasting that showcased a selection of Icon
Wines from many of the most important
winemakers in Chile. He had a wild idea
– what if somehow, one could combine
all these iconic wines from various wine
producers in Chile into one bottle? He
quickly wrote down the idea on a napkin
and shared this with some friends
attending the tasting panel. Many people
were skeptical, but this didn’t deter him.
“From that moment, I knew that I had to
go down this path and turn my idea into
a reality”, says Rafael.
Rafael worked for many years on the
creative side of the wine industry,
having successfully created
brands such as Concha y Toro’s
Casillero del Diablo. He decided
to leave behind the world of
advertising, and began the long
process of reuniting more than
100 wineries from Chile, and
creating a unique wine portfolio
that doesn’t exist anywhere else
in the world today. The goal: to
produce wines that would unify
a diverse Chile and showcase the
most creativity in winemaking.
What makes these wines
unique is that no bottle comes
from a single vineyard. Throughout
this 10 year long journey, Rafael Prieto
somehow would unify different valleys,
personalities, styles, and tastes into
one unprecedented wine endeavor
that would result in some of the most
innovative wines coming out of Chile
today. Fast forward to October of 2017
- Top Winemakers Chile recently made
its U.S. debut in Houston and New York
City. The wine is currently sold in more
than 10 countries.

wineries and 100 winemakers, each
contributing 1% of a Cabernet Sauvignon
that represents their particular style,
valley, and barrel of the 2011 harvest.
This fresh, medium-bodied red wine
pairs perfectly with a filet mignon to
balance with the fine tannins.
The second wine in the portfolio consists
of 100% Carmenere, an interesting
grape variety exclusive to Chile, which
was rediscovered 20 years ago. The 50
Barricas (50 Barrels) Carmenere pays
tribute to this emblematic grape and
brings together the 50 top wineries into
one bottle. This modern Carmenere with
great expression of fresh fruit, spices, and
herbal notes is a perfect match for lamb
stew.
The last in the Top Winemakers series is
the 3 Ejes (3 Axis) Syrah, which displays
the diversity of Chilean terroir
in three areas: the Andes
Mountain range, Central
Valleys, and the cold climate
of the Pacific coast, where this
Syrah comes from. The savory
quality of this syrah is an
excellent match for roasted duck
breast with vegetable ratatouille.
All 3 wines are exclusively
imported by Pura Wines, a
small boutique Chilean wine
importer based in Houston
Texas. Chilean native Eduardo
Varas started the company
with business partner Cindy Yang with
a vision to bring unique wines from
Chile to the U.S. “We first brought
wines from a small family winery, and
we are constantly looking for wines that
are unique in the world to share with
people,” explains Eduardo. “The Top
Winemakers project tells the story of
how Chilean wine has changed in the last
20 years in winemaking and innovation,
and we are so proud to share this wine
with you.”

POWER COUPLE
United They Stand
The inside scoop about this amazing power couple
– about their marriage, love, balance, and giving
back to the community.
By Blaine Ochoa
One of the reasons the city of Houston is so strong
is because of its influential citizens. Individuals
are giving back, making a difference, and
constantly making the world a better place.
Houston couple Keith and Shawntell McWilliams are
devoted to helping and inspiring others. LCAHouston
wanted the inside scoop on the amazing power couple
about their marriage, love, balance, and philanthropy.
Keith is a veteran and a Vice President at JP Morgan Chase.
Shawntell is a proud breast cancer survivor, volunteer, and
philanthropist. Together they live life to the fullest, and
strive to make a difference in the Houston area and beyond.
For more than 15 years, Shawntell’s has employed a humble
approach toward giving back through community service
initiatives. The husband and wife team are prominent
members of the Houston community, and have been on
a mission to live life with a purpose. Shawntell’s favorite
proverb is “the journey is the reward.” She has helped raise
thousands of dollars for civic organizations, communities,
and educational initiatives.
After years of memories, the moment they still cherish
the most is when Keith proposed to Shawntell on a hotel
rooftop in St. Louis, Missouri. “The night was lit by the city
lights and the moon, the atmosphere was romantic, and
Shawntell was as lovely as ever. It was a beautiful evening!”
he recalls. Their wedding day is also another cherished
moment. “It was a perfect day and the beginning of our life
together,” says Keith.
Every married couple knows there are ups and downs
throughout every relationship. Shawntell says the key to
a happy marriage is “understanding each other’s strengths
and weaknesses and being an anchor for each other. We are
authentic and connect in so many ways, sometimes without
communicating. Keith is supportive and allows me to be
authentically who I am without trying to change me. This is
important for me because it allows me to continue to grow
and be the best Shawntell.”
Between galas, events, and volunteering, Shawntell and
Keith still manage to find time to relax and enjoy each
other’s company. Their favorite getaways are Las Vegas and
New Orleans. Shawntell loves the spa, shopping, going to
shows, fine dining, and the Las Vegas night life.
“There are some galas and events where I want Keith with
26
Keith and Shawntell McWilliams
me, and there are others where I can go with a girlfriend,
and allow him to rejuvenate and wind down. I want him to
enjoy when we go to an event together. I am more social
than Keith. I recognize that’s one of our differences, and I
adjust accordingly to be more considerate of him and his
time,“ she says.
Ultimately, giving back to the community remains a
prominently significant part of Shawntell and Keith’s
marriage. “Giving back is a principle of God. “To whom
much is given, much is required,” they say.
Strength in unity is demonstrated throughout Shawntell
and Keith’s marriage, and shown through their presence
in the community. LCAHouston is honored to recognize
Shawntell and Keith McWilliams as our featured Power
Couple. Shawntell is a native of Shreveport, Louisiana,
currently residing in Katy, Texas with her husband. Thank
you Shawntell and Keith for making a difference in the
community, and for being a light of hope and inspiration
for others.

Clutch City with Simran Rihal
FASHION
High-powered women are increasingly setting
new goals and career paths — Indian American
Simran Rihal follows her dream in fashion.
By Ruchi Mukherjee
Asking Simran Rihal, the
creative director of the
Simran Rihal Collection,
to pick her favorite clutch
from her collection of 12, is a bit like
asking this mother of twins to choose
between her children. Instead, she
strategically offers an answer: “My
favorites are the silver grey Etoile
clutch that Blake Lively carried, and I
also love Navy Astra with gunmetal”.
(Pinch me please).
Growing up in a very small town
in Rajasthan, India she attended an
amazing school called Waverley in
Mussoorie, a city in the foothills of
the Himalayas. At Waverley, Rihal
met students from other countries
who opened her eyes to what was out
there including fashion. "It really was a
major turning point in my life".
“I had typical Indian parents, and after
high school, I did not have the courage
to tell them I would like to go to fashion school, because
it was not something they would have encouraged,” she
explains. “So I chose to follow my other love and studied
English Literature, but fashion always stayed with me.
When my kids started school full-time, I had some time to
indulge myself. I started Elan Couture, a line of embellished
tunics and evening bags,” nostalgically relates Rihal. Elan
was quite successful
for a few years, but
it involved a lot of
travel and time away
from the family, so she
decided to put it on
hold. She also felt she
had a lot to learn. “I
went to fashion school
and took some design
classes to study the
technical stuff behind
it.”
Simran's story is one of perseverance, passion, and hard
work. From concept to production, it has taken her two
years of researching and sourcing of materials, traveling,
and attending trade-shows to build her business. “I wanted
something unique, and finally found the right leather for
the brand. I recall asking myself, 'why am I even bothering
with this?' It's so much work and stress, and you may not
even succeed," says Simran. “I snapped out of it and started
the process all over again. I am glad I
did, because I now have a product I'm
really proud of," she says.
Her passion for clutches is driven by
the idea of something one can have
fun with, add a little sparkle to, and
elevate. “I felt there were very few
lines that made standout pieces. I love
a clutch that makes a statement, it
doesn't have to be loud and obnoxious,
but something that is unique that
attracts attention in a beautiful way,
and fits my smartphone,” she chuckles.
Are you scared of making mistakes?
“Hmm, let me think. Yes I am scared
of making mistakes, but it’s not just
about the mistakes. Creativity is also
relative. One person's masterpiece
could be another person's trash.
Creating a product is so personal, it's
pretty scary putting yourself out there.
You feel so vulnerable, but here I am
with my instinct to do my best, and
follow my heart.”
Her passion for clutches is driven by the idea of
something one can have fun with, add a little
sparkle, and elevate the outfit.

bones, eyes, and heart, and
her ability to gain weight.
Because of this she was bullied
throughout her life, and
labeled the ‘World’s Ugliest
Woman’ in a viral video. But
even a label as harsh and
ignorant as this couldn’t stop
Lizzie. She rose above the
hurt and pain and became
a motivational speaker,
addressing the issue of bullying
everywhere.
“Beauty is something that each
of us decides on our own. It’s
who you are as a person and
the things you bring to this
world.” We have to get back up
when we get knocked down
and persevere. We have a great
power within ourselves to
make a difference and inspire
and help others; that is what
makes us beautiful. There is
beauty in vulnerability and embracing who you are and
loving yourself fully, for all your flaws, weaknesses, and
imperfections. “Being comfortable with the uncomfortable
is terrifying, but the lessons that you learn and when you
get to the other side of it, is the
greatest feeling in the world.”
There is beauty in confidence
and understanding yourself.
Beauty in letting your heart
shine through to others,
and beauty is in living with
kindness.
Lizzie’s story is one we can all
learn from. I challenge you to be beautiful, to be kind,
and to ultimately love each other more. “You were put on
this earth for a greater purpose, for a purpose greater than
yourself.”

Peacock in the Desert: The Royal Arts of Jodhpur, India
Groundbreaking exhibition brings
centuries of royal treasures from
Jodhpur, India, to the U.S. for the
first time in March of 2018
Peacock in the Desert: The Royal
Arts of Jodhpur, India, an exhibit
with artifacts dating back to the
Mughal era, has made its way
to the United States for the first time. A
groundbreaking collaboration, between
the Museum of Fine Arts Houston
and the Mehrangarh Museum Trust
of Jodhpur, brought the world a sneak
peek into the lavish jewels, furnishings,
ceremonial pieces, and intricacies
belonging to this era.
When we think of India, we think
of the bright colors, the bold
rich textures, and the dripping
layers of gold and stone jewelry.
This collection provides an
insight into timeless
and historical pieces
belonging to the
Marwar-Jodhpur
region. Preserved
through the years
by the Rathore
Dynasty, the
artifacts are taking
their first-ever
pilgrimage outside of
Jodphur. The Rathore
Dynasty that protected
these objects, dates back
to the 15th century, when
Hindu warriors and kings (Kshatriyas)
ruled as a military stronghold from 1459
onwards. During this time, the royal
families built their grand collections
through cross-cultural exchanges,
diplomacy, matrimonial alliances, trade,
and conquest. More than 250 artifacts
belonging to the traveling exhibit have
been housed for centuries in what is
known as the Fort in Jodhpur. English
journalist Rudyard Kipling described
Mughal, Huqqa Vase, early 18th century,
glass and gold paint, Umaid Bhawan Palace
Gujarat, Palanquin (Mahadol), c. 1700–1730, gilded wood, glass,
copper, and ferrous alloy, Mehrangarh Museum Trust
Jodhpur, Pavilion (Baradari), 19th century, wood, paint, lacquer, and gold, Mehrangarh Museum Trust
the Fort, which serves as the elite
residence to the Rathore lineage
and center of cultural patronage,

rich textiles that

themes: Interconnections

on gender
roles and

and lastly, the royal patronage and the
continuity of tradition – royal families
and preservation of culture.
“We are deeply honored and grateful to
be the first U.S. organization to present
this show, and for the opportunity to
provide visitors this unprecedented
experience of India’s rich cultural
history,” says MFAH director, Gary

My Heart is Full with The River: Toni Tate
There are many wonderful charities in Houston,
and practically every night, there is a gala hosted
to raise funds for a meaningful cause. One
outstanding charity that stole our hearts was
Theatre Under The Stars: The River. At their recent annual
fundraising gala event, LCAHouston had the opportunity
to sit down with this year’s Gala Chair Toni Tate to speak
to her about her journey with
this wonderful cause. The gala
was a sold out, casino-themed,
suave event, featuring art, music,
and philanthropy. The evening
honored Houston's very own
Elaine Turner, who shared
her personal journey with her
autistic daughter.
Toni is no newcomer to
philanthropy. A mother of two
step-daughters, she along with
her husband have supported
many Houston causes. A staunch
believer in the empowerment of
women, Mrs. Tate contributes
to the Women's Home, Helping
A Hero, The Houston Humane
Society, the Texas Center For the
Missing, and KnowAutism.
Why is it so important for you to
help others?
From a young age, my parents
instilled in us how important it
was to appreciate what we have,
and to have a compassionate
heart towards others. They are
really the reason I feel so strongly
about giving back. I don’t
remember a time as a child that
my family wasn’t contributing in
some way, so it is almost natural
for me to want to help others.
What do you love about this city
the most?
I’ve lived in Houston for 12 years now, and it didn’t take
long for it to become “home” to me, Houston is the perfect
mix of big city and small town. There are seemingly endless
activities, attractions, and restaurants to experience, yet
there is also a real sense of community. One of the things I
really like about Houston is the diversity of its people and
cultures. We learn from each other without feeling like we
need to discard our own heritage and traditions.
Why is The River so close to your heart? Tell us your journey
with them.
Oh my God, those kids are my
world! Anyone who knows
me knows that in the first two
minutes of a conversation, I
will start sharing my passion
for The River. I’m tearing up
now just thinking about it! I
initially became associated with
TUTS Education programs
several years ago after seeing
The River Troupe perform, and
I immediately knew I wanted
to be a part of it somehow. The
pure joy that came through
while they were performing was
contagious. My first involvement
was as the Celebration Event
Underwriting Chair, and later
as an Auction Co-Chair. When I
was approached to be the Chair
for this year’s Celebration, I was
honored. During my time with
The River, I’ve spoken with many
students and their families, and
I've heard the same words over
and over: acceptance, inclusion,
Toni Tate | Photo by Sonya Abid
and fun. Knowing that these
are the goals of The River’s
programs, hearing them always
makes me proud to be involved.
But another word that comes
up often is friendship. Through
The River, and the Humphreys
School of Musical Theater,
students make friends, not only
with fellow students and their
families, but also within the
community. When they hold
special performances at schools
TUTS The River Performance | Photo by Priscilla Dixon
and other venues, they meet
many people who remember them and want to become a
part of the education programs as I did. I’ve also forged
friendships with some incredible people who I probably
never would have known, were it not for my relationship
with TUTS.

Air Kisses and Plenty of Flirtation:
Arjun Rampal Mesmerizes
Houstonians with His Generosity at
the CRY Foundation Gala Dinner
I
am not sure if it was the wonderful
cause or the irresistible charm of
Indian actor and model Arjun
Rampal that drove guests to fervently
raise their hands and donate at the CRY
America Houston Gala dinner. Well
like they say, whatever it takes for a
good cause. More than a hundred Indian
Americans gathered at the Sweetwater
Country Club earlier this year for
the annual CRY Charity Gala to raise
awareness and funds. It began with the
makings of a typical Indian gala scene,
with ladies in Bollywood style saris, and
men in suits. Then, the handsome Arjun
Rampal turned heads as he walked into
the club sporting a slim black tie suit and
a mesmerizing smile.
FOX 26 Reporter Rashi Vats and ABC
13 Reporter Pooja Lodhia emceed the
event with a successful live auction,
and their tête-à-tête with the audience.
In my career as a journalist, I have had
the honor to meet many actors and
dignitaries. It was heartwarming to see
this celebrity guest’s warm and modest
attitude with a sincere passion for the
cause. He happily took pictures with
guests, and was hands on in raising
money during the live pledge drive. His
jovial flirtations were certainly a big draw
for guests to open up their hearts and
wallets. He walked to each table to take
pictures with generous donors, and some
lucky ladies snagged a kiss on the cheek.
“It feels wonderful to be here so many
miles away from home, and meet people
from your own country who are still
connected, who still want to give back,
and still want to be responsible for their
country,” explained Rampal. Bay Areabased
dentist Nisha flew in just be seated
next to the actor and support a good

down to visit me because she missed the
Bay Area event makes me feel so special,”
he added.
Hailing from a military family, Arjun
is passionate about making a change,
whether environmental or in politics.
He hopes for peace, equality, and the
eradication of corruption in India. “I am
honored to be involved with CRY. As a

Arjun said.

Crime Stoppers of Houston Gala Celebrates Bob Woodruff and
Harvey First Responders! Making Houston Strong and Safe
By Krupali Laxmidas
It was a night spent
reminiscing on
difficult times, but
also one celebrating
the gift of life at the
Crime Stoppers Gala
on October 24th, 2017
at the Hyatt Regency
Houston. Crime Stoppers
is a unique organization
that has transitioned into
a community of its own;
a community where
families, neighbors, and
even strangers, band
together for the overall
safety of those around
them. The gala serves
as one of the biggest
events for Crime Stoppers, and the
funds raised are directed towards the
Tip Line and various crime prevention
programs. These programs are vital to
Crime Stoppers because they help create
awareness and educate children and
adults about the safety and protection
they have available.
The night kicked off with a cocktail
hour and a wonderful silent auction
which contributed over $308,000 to
Crime Stopper programs! Guests were
greeted by Dominique Sachse, Anchor
at KPRC2 News and the evening’s Emcee,
who introduced Steve Tyrell’s “Hand in
Hand” single. The song was written
specifically for Houston after the tragedy
of Hurricane Harvey. The evening
celebrated how Houston came together
to give back to the community despite
race, gender, or social standing. Rania
Mankarious, Crime Stoppers Executive
Director, held a moment of silence in
remembrance of those who had suffered
and were lost during the storm. She
mentioned that, together with the help of
Hyatt Regency’s Managing Director Tom
Netting, they were able to make this
HPD and HCSO Honor Guard
evening possible and provide some hope
for those who really needed it the most.
After the lovely dinner, Gala Chairs
Soraya and Scott McClellan spoke about
their experience during the Hurricane
relief efforts as well as their personal
contributions to the organization.
Together they were on the front lines
with H-E-B. to bring food and products
to many victims of the floods. They
were definitely an iconic duo during
Houston’s time of need. Their remarks
were followed by a heartfelt speech
from keynote speaker Bob Woodruff,
ABC International Correspondent.
Woodruff spoke about the challenges
he faced after an assignment in Iraq that
led to an injury sustained by an IED
while covering the story. He stressed
the importance of being surrounded
by friends and family whom served
as catalysts in his recovery. Following
the theme of family and support, guest
speaker Alissa Parker, mother of Emilie
Parker, spoke about the emotional
trauma she experienced after her
daughter was killed in the 2012 Sandy
Hook school shooting. The many “whatif
” questions that went
unanswered during
those events led her to
become more involved in
advocating for children
safety in schools.
The celebration was
supported by many
individuals, community
partners and generous
underwriters, including
Amerapex Corporation,
H-E-B, Becker Family
Foundation, Buffalo
Specialties, Paula
Goldstein, Michelle and
Mike Heinz, Margaret
and Ben Morris, Jill and
Charles Talisman, CenterPoint Energy,
The Lewis Family, Portfolio Resident

March of Dimes Fashion Luncheon
SOCIETY
By Krupali Laxmidas
With the growth of
female empowerment,
support, and unification,
‘feminism’ has
become one of the most identifiable
words in today's society. Supporting
women through their transitions
into motherhood, and helping them
understand that they are not alone
during any part of it, has been a goal
of the Women’s Hospital of Texas 14th
annual luncheon benefitting March of
Dimes which was held this past Saturday
at the Royal Sonesta in Houston.
March of Dimes is a non-profit
organization who’s primary focus is
providing resources for mothers and
their babies through preventative
care and services. Their goal is to help
prevent birth defects, premature births,
and infant mortality among many other
personal services. Just this year alone, the
NICU Family Support programs were
able to aid more than 90,000 families, by
providing comfort and hospitalization
from the funding they received.
The luncheon was co-chaired by
community volunteer and philanthropist
Karina Barbieri, along with the Woman’s
Hospital CEO and March Of Dimes
board member, Ashley McClellan.
Eyewitness ABC13 Morning Anchor
Samica Knight emcee’d, and shared
her own story about her involvement
and time spent at the Women’s Hospital
during her pregnancy. The pride and joy
that she exuded was impressionable, as
was her handsome son, who joined her
on stage along with her husband.
Natalie King of Nat King Couture
schooled us on fall fashion trends that
ranged from men-styled blazers to floral
transitional pieces, as well as all the love
for velvets. Houston may not get all of
the seasons, but we sure make up for it
with our fashion forward antics. Fashion
show producer Todd Ramos showcased
the many designers and brands on the
runway from Chloe Dao, LUCHO, Stella
& Dot, French Cuff Boutique, and many
other notable names that participated in
the Boutique Bazaar kicking off. There
Wondy Weston and Shawntell McWilliams
were many places to shop, whether you
wanted to update your shoe, purse, or
closet collections.
Also in attendance were Darcie Wells,
Executive Director in Houston for March
of Dimes, and Kemah Blair, Senior
Development Manager. Some other
familiar guests included Wondy Weston,
Ana Llovera, Maria Cantu-Ondarza,
Mandy Kao, Brigitte Kalai, Bethany
Buchanan, Elise Hollingsworth, Carlos
Barbieri, Rhonda Arnold, and many
more!
This was a lovely way to spend a Saturday
afternoon, sipping, strolling, shopping,
and supporting a great cause that uplifts
women and children in the best way
possible.

Hurricane Harvey. In conjunction with
the Houston Food Bank, the Museum’s
Fresh Café will provide enrichment
programs alongside nutritional meals at
community centers across the city to help

gala of the season, Una Notte In Italia

witnessed another sold out fun evening,
with more than 600 guests attending

PEOPLE WATCH
James Lassiter’s inclusive approach
to the law sets him apart from the
rest. James stands synonymous
with Texas Strong, and jumps in
with full energy when his client
is hurt.
Fighting for justice is no easy task.
“Many cases are challenging when you
are fighting for justice. When the stakes
get high, and the family needs justice to
survive, is when I challenge myself to
go the extra mile in fighting for what is
right,” explains Lassiter.
There is a tremendous amount of
misinformation about the law. “Some
of the biggest misinformation in my
field is regarding frivolous lawsuits, and
that all lawyers are greedy. What is not
always understood is that the frivolous
cases are the extreme exception. It is
much more common for individuals not
to be adequately compensated than the
other way around. There are many legal
hurdles that must be cleared, and there is
not much room for a meritless case to go
very far,” says James.
Dealing with unpleasant incidents in a
challenging profession like his can often
push one towards cynicism. But what
it really comes down to, he believes, is
striking a balance. “It was not always
easy. In my earlier years, I definitely
did not always strike that balance, often
working 12 hours a days and most
weekends, and not seeing my family for
days at a time while preparing and trying
lawsuits. One day I realized that my kids
were growing up, and that I would not
get a second chance to participate in
their childhood. Today, I try maintain
a balance between work and family
through better time-management skills
and smarter delegation of work.”
Lassiter practices what he preaches. He
is a dedicated family man, a father, and
a loving husband to his gorgeous wife
Nicole O’Brian Lassiter, a former Miss
Texas USA. “It’s definitely unexpected
flowers, an exciting date night, or a
getaway to our favorite travel spot Paris,
if I have to impress my love Niki,” says
James.

2017 LCAHouston.com
It has been a historical year for Houston.
Hurricane Harvey caused historic and
catastrophic flooding, leaving thousands
in the city helpless and homeless. Blue
skies and sun finally appeared after days
of torrential rain in August, and months
later, there are still many ongoing stories
of heartache and tragedy. But what
makes Texas, and this city, so special is
the brave and determined hearts of its
people. Houstonians’ immense capacity for
humanity and compassion during tragedy
is a hallmark of their true American spirit.
Neighbors have come together to help
one another irrespective of race, religion,
or political affiliation. And in the midst of
our recovery from tragedy, Houston once
again made headlines for all the right
reasons as our Houston Astros won the
World Series! What an incredible year!
Real estate is booming with high rises
popping up everywhere from the Galleria
to Midtown to Montrose. Our city is a
shining example of continued growth and
prosperity in the face of adversity. Houston
has always bucked the trend and this past
year was no different. #HoustonStrong
has become a style statement.
One thing is certain: NOTHING can stop
this city. It continues to thrive successfully
and stylishly, and it is a true reflection of
its citizen’s resiliency. As we wrap up the
year, we are proud to present LCAHouston's
Top Ten People of The Year 2017!

Michael Chabala
There is no slowing down for this former
Major League Soccer player who believes
in keeping the ball rolling. Founder
of Sphere, Michael played back to his
strengths and realized his true calling to
#keeptheballrolling. Searching for a workout
that matched the intensity, team mentality
and exhilaration that soccer provided, he put
his cleats back on. Learning from the field
and mistakes made, Michael started to play
in a different direction from his previous 25
years. He focused on quality of play instead
of minutes on the field, connecting people
rather than passes, and doing more with a
ball than just scoring goals. From that, Sphere
was born - a soccer-inspired fitness concept
and signature game-changing class. Huddle
up and get ready to practice like you play!
