D ear friends,

I am delighted to dedicate this edition of our newsletter to Paynnovate

2019. Paynnovate is an APAC payments innovation forum and 2019 was

the first ever Global Customer Meet organised by AGS Transact Technologies

and Novus Technologies.

Paynnovate is designed to bring together industry experts from all over

the world on the same platform for an enlightening exchange of thought

leadership ideas and success stories. The core idea behind Paynnovate

is to do justice to its name; that is, to discuss innovations in the payment

ecosystem.

We have entered the fourth industrial revolution and everything around us

is rapidly evolving. The FinTech landscape has undergone massive change

and the payment ecosystem has been revolutionised by frictionless form

factors. I strongly believe that the future of payments is frictionless. That is

what the customer wants and that is what the need of the hour is.

In this special edition of AGSTTL newsletter, you will read about our

first edition of Paynnovate which was held in the scenic town of Cebu

in Philippines. A one-of-its-kind summit, Paynnovate 2019 saw a unique

blend of keynote presentations by leaders from APAC region, revolutionary

exhibits and panel discussions with live audience polling and engaging

cultural & fun activities.

You will also read briefly about various milestones

AGS Transact Technologies continued to achieve.

Some of these milestones and industry trends

will be discussed in detail in the next issue of

AGSTTL Newsletter. For instance, the concept

of ‘Digital India’ which seemed like a far-fetched

dream is now closer to becoming reality. With

our recent industry-first solutions like ‘QR Cash’

which enables UPI QR-based cash withdrawals

on ATMs and Fastlane, we are looking to

transform how India transacts.

In addition to that, we will also discuss

“interoperability” which we believe can be

a promising force driving ‘frictionless future’

as it will benefit both, the end users as well

as FinTech players.

Speaking of the future, year 2020 is here and I

hope that it brings you great prosperity & joy.

Wishing you all a very Happy New Year!

MARCHING TOWARDS

A FRICTIONLESS

PAYMENT ECOSYSTEM

T

he world is evolving & the things we did not

foresee are becoming a reality. A few years

back, getting your food delivered with the help

of an app would seem incomprehensible; but today

it as an inseparable part of our lives. Long gone are

the days of waiting at restaurants to book a table,

or the struggle of hailing a cab. Everything is at your

fingertips. Everything is connected. Everything is

a network and one of the most vital threads of this

The payment ecosystem is ever-evolving & has gone

through substantial changes over the last decade.

The ways we manage and dealt with money have

revolutionised. For developing countries like India,

cash continues to be the king. However, the way we

access cash has changed; even though it took an

eventful Demonetisation to bring this change.

Fintech and digital

payments players

took this opportunity

to break the norms

of conformity and

enhanced the way

of transacting.

The entry of many Fintech players and their

innovations led to a domino effect and thus

began the evolution of the payment ecosystem.

The advancements in the payment ecosystem

have given rise to the new promise of ‘frictionless

payments’. This is also the core idea behind

Paynnovate.

network is PAYMENTS.

““We believe that the payment industry is

growing at an exponential pace and experts

from all across the globe should come together

under one roof to discuss the trends in the

payment ecosystem. For this we charted an

outstanding line-up of speakers who could share

their experiences through keynote speeches,

case studies and panel discussions. We wanted

to highlight success stories that spoke about

innovations and how these innovations brought

a positive impact on the lives of people.”

Ravi B. Goyal,

Chairman & Managing Director

AGS Transact Technologies

Designed exclusively

for industry experts

from all the over the

world, Paynnovate

hosted a distinguished

line-up of speakers

who discussed the

advancements in the

payment ecosystem.

The keynote speakers

at Paynnovate 2019

spoke about changes

that happened over

the course of time &

how adaption and

innovation is the key

to success.

“Since the beginning we wanted Paynnovate

to be a thought-leadership platform and salespitch

free event. However, unlike a regular

summit, we wanted these discussions to take

place in a relaxed environment. Hence, while

we ensured Paynnovate had only the bestin-industry

speakers & topics and that all the

interactions were organic and in the interest of

the industry at large, we did break away from

the regular format.”

PAYNNOVATE 2019 - SPECIAL EDITION // 11

DAY

ONE

Day one at Paynnovate began with Philippine’s national anthem played by violin artists. This knowledge exchange summit

was jointly hosted by Miss Cebu 2018, Steffi Aberasturi and Ricardos Khoury, Founder & CEO, Novus Technologies.

During this interactive session a live poll was conducted wherein guests expressed their agreement and disagreement

to industry trends being discussed on a scale of 1-10.

There were insightful keynote presentations from

across sectors like banking, retail, FinTech and

even on human design. At the same time, spurts

of cultural and entertaining acts in between the

sessions ensured that at no time the guests were

distracted. Ravi Vikram, Senior Director,

Capgemini, in his presentation on ‘World

Payments Report – Trends in APAC’ highlighted

that one-third to half of incumbents’ volume for

payments and investments are at risk of being

lost to disruptive models. The striking statistics

speak of the evolution of payments and the

penetration of digital modes of transaction in

various world markets.

On the other hand, Armand Hartono, Deputy

President Director, PT Bank Central Asia (BCA),

Indonesia, through his presentation ‘New Normal

in BCA’ discussed how the world is moving towards

a digital & frictionless ecosystem yet cash remains

important. To explain his point further, he said “In

case of typhoons, earthquakes and other natural

calamities, countries with cash-based economies

recover sooner.”

Lito Villanueva, Chief Innovations & Inclusion

Officer, RCBC Bank, Philippines and Chairman,

Fintech Alliance.PH, explained the ‘Evolution

and Innovation of FinTech in the Philippines’. He

explained how Philippines has become one of the

few countries in the world to have a national QR

code enabling interoperability.

“The one thing that will move the needle in

the payment industry is the regulator i.e.

the government”, he added while stating the

essentials for a frictionless tomorrow.

‘The Innovation in Human Experience Design’ was

yet another insightful presentation by Tim Kobe,

Founder & CEO, Eight Inc., and best known for

designing the original Apple Stores. Tim explained

the human aspect in design and emphasised on

the fact that any offering should not only improve

the process but also enhance human experience.

In all, the guests at Paynnovate 2019 had a common

goal, i.e. to drive the global payments industry to

next level. This is possible when we learn from the

success of our peers in their respective countries,

and this is what Paynnovate aims to facilitate. To

this tune, yet another impressive highlight of the

summit was the case studies.

Ritesh Pai, Group President & Chief Digital

Officer, Yes Bank, India, discussed how the

implementation of ‘Electronic Public Distribution

System (ePDS)’ digitized the Fair Price Shops (FPS)

for the less-fortunate section of the society & how it

has benefitted the fair shop owners in augmenting

their income while at the same time brought

transparency in the process.

Thilak Piyadigama, Chief Executive Officer,

SDB Bank, Sri Lanka, shared Sri Lanka’s journey

from rural to the urbanised way of transactions.

He reiterated Armand’s thought by saying, “We

are moving from a linear + local competition to an

exponential + global network.”

So Sopha, Chief Financial Officer, DaraPay,

took the audience through a journey of the

organisation and gave an insight about how

the organisation is adapting to the evolving

payment scenario.

The presentations

were followed by a

panel discussion with

twist. The esteemed

panellists discussed

‘The changing face of

payments and the

role of FinTechs’ and

gave the audience a

kaleidoscopic view

of the industry. They

also answered industrycentric

questions based

on their vast experience

& unmatched expertise.

The elite list of

panellists included

Ritesh Pai, Nigel Lee,

Stepan Auerbach,

Armand Hartono,

Thilak Piyadigama,

Ravi Vikram and Lito

Villanueva.

As closing remark, Ricardos Khoury, Founder &

CEO, Novus Technologies, who moderated the

panel, said, “One of the very important things that

happened in this room today was the diversity

of questions, topics and profiles of the speakers

coming from technology, design, security & retail.

Every topic we picked was very relevant around

financial inclusion and revolved around the ability

to not just innovate but also improve the lives of

the people using this technology in the rural parts

of APAC. This is the kind of dialogue we wanted to

have in Paynnovate 2019. We promise you that the

next Paynnovate will be more powerful, diverse

and industry concentrated.”

DAY

TWO

While the interactive

summit on exchange

of ideas had come to

an end, Paynnovate

had just begun. The

cultural evening was

based on the theme -

Sinulog Festival, which

encompassed cultural

performances by the

locals & finely crafted

local cuisine.

Day two was all about informal interactions, team-activities & local excursions

and once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Some of the highlights were Dragon-boat

race, Island hopping, incidental volley ball match with locals, city tour & some

water sports giving an adrenaline rush. The Copacabana night saw various

breath-taking performances by artists which were then followed by beautiful

fireworks, bringing this avant-garde experience to an official closure.

ARMAND HARTONO,

Deputy President

Director,

Bank Central Asia

In 2020, there will be a lot of new

trends. I believe AI will be the main

topic for the coming five years. More

people will realise the value of having

algorithms as a great tool to solve

problems in various aspects like

health, finance, government and of

course day-to-day payments. India,

today, with Aadhar has managed to

connect 1.2 billion people. I think

that is an accomplishment in itself.

It allows many banks to cover more

ground, more customers using

technology.

DR. N. RAJENDRAN,

Chief Technology

Officer,

NPCI

Paynnovate 2019 has been an

excellent experience. Many people

from the domain as well as technology

experts were able to interact. The

payment industry is moving towards

QR-based payments and tap-andgo

payments. This will enhance

customer experience and will be

the demand in most of the world

markets. The payment infrastructure

has to be interoperable and not a

closed-loop system.

RITESH PAI,

Group President and

Chief Digital Officer,

Yes Bank

Paynnovate 2019 has been a very

enriching experience as it was the

amalgamation of ideas of various

thought leaders in the industry. In

the future, analytics and algorithms

would play a great role. I think AI

as a technology will become more

prominent & important as the large

ecosystem starts embracing it.

PIERRE HABIB,

Director, Eight Inc

Co-Founder & CEO,

GoPlus

I see Paynnovate as more than a

conference. It is a curated ecosystem

of business partners working towards

creating value & human progress. It is

really terrific and it is wonderful to be

a part of it. Thank you AGS & Novus.

NIGEL LEE,

President,

APIS Partners

I am very happy to be here for

Paynnovate 2019 in Cebu. It has been

a great event, one of the few events,

where you actually get to meet real

practitioners in the payments and

banking space who are trying to deal

with cutting-edge issues. One of the

key issues of this year is the proliferation

of QR code as a payment mechanism.

This is going to continue through 2020

as well. Definitely, the one thing to

watch out for will be an increasing

use of wallets across multiple

countries.

SO SOPHA,

Chief Financial Officer,

DaraPay

Each country participated in the

event share similar cultures and

challenges in the FinTech industry.

It was a good motive to meet,

understand & share best practices

of improvements & challenges of

each country.

PARAKH DAVE,

Chief Information

Officer - Trading,

Trafigura

An excellent event, great speakers,

very interesting topics discussed and

covered. The trend that I see in the

next year and even in next couple of

months is blockchain payments;

that is going to redefine the industry.

Another trend I see is frictionless

payments, it will continue evolving.

Overall, the whole event has been

excellent and I will definitely come

back next year. Thank you very much

to Ricardos, Ravi, AGS, Novus & the

entire team. It was a very well put

together event.

AMIT MANDAHAR,

Chief Information

Officer,

Modi Enterprises

Today’s session was brilliant with

a lot of learning from what people

have done. It was really exciting.

Experience is the future as it is all

about convenience. Technology

will definitely stay. But, everyone is

looking for a shift from technology to

experience in the future. I learnt a lot

from the keynotes as it was entirely

based on practical scenarios.

DR. ROLAND SAVOY,

Chairman of the

Board G+D MS China

- Giesecke+Devrient

Mobile Security

I would like to commend Ricardos

& AGS for this successful conference.

It was designed in a very interesting

format & we had great discussions.

One of the major trends that I see

for the coming years is increase in

security in the payment sector. The

world will get into more diverse

payment methods and witness

a total increase in volume of

payment security.

RAHUL BHAGAT,

Director,

AGS Transact

Technologies

This has been a tremendous day. I

have spent three decades in banking

and after a while you start to believe

that you come to another conference

or gathering and you have been there,

seen it all. But the way Ricardos and

Ravi have put Paynnovate together

has been simply amazing. The depth

of conversations, width of topics been

covered and the variety of speakers

covering the whole spectrum of both

payments and innovation has been

gripping, thought-provoking & has

certainly captured our interest. Kudos

& congratulations to the entire team!

RAVI VIKRAM,

Senior Director,

Capgemini

Paynnovate was a very nice platform

where lot of innovative minds from

different walks of life like retail, banks

and technology came together and

discussed the future of payments &

where the industry was going. The

one trend that I picked from the

event is how frictionless payments

are going to come up in a big way in

the near future. Overall, it was a very

good and thought of event.

MAHESH PATEL,

Chief Technology

Officer,

AGS Transact

Technologies

“I really enjoyed this gathering

of thought leaders from APAC at

Paynnovate 2019. We had interesting

discussions with industry experts

from banking, retail and payments

sector. The presentations from our

friends coming from Indonesia and

Philippines helped us gain an insight

of the payment ecosystem in their

respective countries. I personally

found Tim’s presentation on design

quite insightful. It provided a unique

perspective to the human aspect

of design in business. Overall,

Paynnovate was a great opportunity

to discuss trends in the industry.
