Update11 th GRIHA Summit focuses on‘Integrated Approach to Sustainability’Highlighting that nearly 65 per cent of India’spopulation is rural, Nitin Gadkari, Union Ministerfor Road Transport & Highways and MSMEs, saidthat creating employment for the rural, agriculture andtribal sector is a high priority for the government. Thisrequires knowledge, technology and innovation that candrive sustainable development in India.The Minister was speaking at the 11th edition of theGRIHA Summit, co-hosted by GRIHA council and UNSW,Sydney, at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi. Thetheme for this year’s Summit is “Approach to IntegratedSustainability”.Speaking about various green initiatives of thegovernment, Gadkari said, “Creating waste into wealthis the new vision for the country. We are working hardto formulate a policy on biofuels in the transport sector.We are also promoting ethanol and bio-compressednatural gas (bio-CNG). The sector is growing very fast.There are plans to make bio-CNG from rice husk in Delhi.We have also launched India’s first motorbike poweredon 100 per cent bioethanol.”Citing the example of Nagpur, the Minister said the cityearns nearly `300 crore from recycling sewage waterand nearly 80 buses in the city are plying on bio-CNG,made from sludge and various kinds of biowaste. Healso spoke about the use of flyash waste being used inconstruction and the mandatory use of 8% plastic inroad construction. In Maharashtra, the Minister spokeabout the rejuvenation of rivers and nullahs in a fewdistricts, by deepening the water bodies and using thematerial for making aggregate used in road construction.Her Excellency Harinder Sidhu, Australian HighCommissioner to India, said India and Australia facesimilar challenges of urbanisation, which get furthercomplicated by climate change. Talking about the needto make homes and cities liveable and functional, shesaid, “We commend the GRIHA Council for makingframeworks that reduce emissions from our builtenvironment.”His Excellency Freddy Svane, Ambassador, RoyalDanish Embassy to India, emphasised Denmark’scommitment to reduce 70 per cent emissions by2030, through their own efforts and not by anycarbon trading mechanism. Talking about India’sefforts, he added, “The social aspect of sustainabilityis important. Billions of people in India should beable to enjoy the same quality of life as developedcountries, but with more responsibility and with thehelp of technology and innovation.” He also talkedabout developing a strategic partnership betweenIndia and Denmark.During the inaugural session, several new projectsacross India that have demonstrated complianceunder the GRIHA rating system received awards. ITCKohenur in Hyderabad, “Integrity” Campus at TitanCorporate Office in Bengaluru, National Academyof Customs, Indirect Taxes and Narcotics (NACIN)in Hyderabad, Indian Institute of Management (IIM)Kozhikode Campus (Phase V), and Bihar Museum inPatna are among the recipients of a 5-star GRIHArating. The rating variant GRIHA is designed fornew constructions having built-up area more than2500 square metres.
