2012 Edler Lecture<br />
Roberto M. Lang, MD, FASE, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong><br />
Medicine, Director, Noninvasive Cardiac<br />
Imaging Lab, at the University <strong>of</strong> Chicago<br />
Medicine, Chicago, IL, has been named<br />
the 23rd Annual Scientific Sessions Edler<br />
Lecturer� Dr� Lang is an internationally<br />
renowned cardiologist and specialist in<br />
echocardiography and was a pioneer in the<br />
development <strong>of</strong> 3D echocardiography� He is<br />
also a past president <strong>of</strong> ASE� Created in 1990,<br />
the annual Edler Lecture honors the founder <strong>of</strong> echocardiography,<br />
Inge Edler, MD� Dr� Lang will present his lecture, entitled “3D<br />
<strong>Echocardiography</strong> has Come <strong>of</strong> Age: Promises and Perspectives,”<br />
during the ASE Awards Presentations, Sunday, July 1, in Potomac A�<br />
2012 Feigenbaum Lecture<br />
Philippe Pibarot, DVM, PhD, FASE <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Laval University in Quebec, Canada, has<br />
been named the 13th Annual ASE Scientific<br />
Sessions Feigenbaum Lecturer� The<br />
Feigenbaum Lecture was named in honor <strong>of</strong><br />
the founder and first president <strong>of</strong> ASE, Harvey<br />
Feigenbaum, MD, FASE� This lectureship is<br />
awarded to a young investigator in recognition<br />
<strong>of</strong> his/her significant contributions to research<br />
in the field <strong>of</strong> echocardiography and his/her<br />
potential to continue at a high level <strong>of</strong> achievement� Dr� Pibarot<br />
will present his lecture, entitled “Doppler <strong>Echocardiography</strong> is the<br />
Cornerstone <strong>of</strong> the Management <strong>of</strong> Aortic Stenosis,” during the<br />
2012 Arthur E� Weyman Young Investigators’ Award Competition<br />
and Annual Feigenbaum Lecture from 10:45 am – 12:15 pm on<br />
Monday, July 2, in Potomac A�<br />
Lifetime Achievement Award<br />
The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes individuals who<br />
have had a lifetime <strong>of</strong> outstanding achievements in the field<br />
<strong>of</strong> cardiovascular ultrasound and have served as a role model<br />
through service, research and teaching� These individuals have a<br />
career in cardiovascular ultrasound spanning at least 25 years and<br />
are recognized at local, national and international levels� ASE is<br />
pleased to recognize this year’s recipient during the ASE Awards<br />
Presentation from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm on Sunday, July 1, in Potomac A�<br />
Miguel A. Quiñones, MD has been named<br />
ASE’s 4th Physician Lifetime Achievement<br />
recipient� Dr� Quinoñes is Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong><br />
Medicine, Weill Cornell Medical College,<br />
Chairman, Department <strong>of</strong> Cardiology,<br />
Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center,<br />
The Methodist Hospital, Houston, TX�<br />
Dr� Quiñones is one <strong>of</strong> the true pioneers in<br />
the field <strong>of</strong> echocardiography, having led the<br />
way in the assessment <strong>of</strong> ventricular and valvular function and has<br />
shown long dedication to ASE� Dr� Quiñones has had a long and<br />
illustrious research career, focusing on the assessment <strong>of</strong> a wide<br />
variety <strong>of</strong> clinical problems with echocardiography� In his early<br />
career, he combined echocardiography with intracardiac high<br />
fidelity pressure measurement to related myocardial wall stress<br />
to systolic performance� Dr� Quiñones epitomizes excellence in<br />
echocardiography�<br />

Meritorious Service Award<br />
The ASE Meritorious Service Award recognizes<br />
individual members for their substantial and<br />
generous efforts to the <strong>Society</strong>’s betterment�<br />
ASE is pleased to recognize this year’s<br />
recipient, Arthur E. Weyman, MD, FASE,<br />
Research Director, Cardiac Ultrasound<br />
Laboratory, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Medicine,<br />
Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard<br />
Medical School, Boston, MA� Dr� Weyman’s<br />
contributions in the field <strong>of</strong> echocardiography<br />
and, more specifically, to ASE are plentiful� He was present at the<br />
beginning <strong>of</strong> 2-Dimensional echocardiography and did much in<br />
the early years to define the standardized exam that we use to this<br />
day in examining our patients� He was deeply involved with ASE<br />
from its inception and served as its president 1991-1992� It was at<br />
that time that he recognized the importance <strong>of</strong> developing a digital<br />
formatting standard for echocardiography that was instrumental in<br />
involving ASE on the DICOM Standard Committee� Perhaps most<br />
notably, he was the driving force behind the development <strong>of</strong> the<br />
National Board <strong>of</strong> <strong>Echocardiography</strong>’s standardized exam, which<br />
has become the essential credential for establishing one’s expertise<br />
as an echocardiographer� The NBE was largely Dr� Weyman’s vision<br />
from the start� He has had many other roles within ASE, including<br />
service on the Bylaws & Ethics Committee, the Development<br />
Committee, Foundation Task Force, Industry Roundtable, Long<br />
Term Goals Committee, and the Nominating committee� He will<br />
be recognized during the ASE Awards Presentation from 4:00 pm –<br />
6:00 pm on Sunday, July 1, in Potomac A�<br />
Richard Popp Excellence in Teaching Award<br />
Gerard P. Aurigemma, MD, FASE <strong>of</strong> the<br />
University <strong>of</strong> Massachusetts Medical<br />
School, Worcester, MA, has been named<br />
the 12th annual recipient <strong>of</strong> the Richard<br />
Popp Excellence in Teaching Award� Dr�<br />
Aurigemma was nominated by his peers<br />
for the important role he has played in<br />
teaching, mentoring and helping to improve<br />
the skills <strong>of</strong> future echocardiographers� The<br />
award is named in honor <strong>of</strong> ASE’s second<br />
president, Richard L� Popp, MD, FASE, and recognizes physicians<br />
who epitomize the ideal qualities possessed by a mentor and role<br />
model� He will be recognized during the ASE Awards Presentation<br />
from 4:00 – 6:00 pm on Sunday, July 1, in Potomac A�
