FEATUREPlaying CupidThe maths behind datingIn the 2001 biopic A BeautifulMind mathematician John Nash(played by Russell Crowe) devisesa dating strategy for his friends.Although they all fancy “theblonde” in a group of women, hepoints out that none of them willget her because they’ll end upblocking each other. And if theythen turn to her friends, they’ll berejected because no one likes to be second best.So the solution is for his friends to approach theblonde’s friends first. Known as Nash’s Equilibrium,it illustrates that the best result comesfrom everyone in the group doing what’s best forhim/herself and the group.Nash’s Equilibrium is a central application ofgame theory, which uses mathematical modellingto understand the decisions individualsmake and how these decisions affect groups.It’s not unusual for maths to feature in thequest for love.Traditional approaches to wooinghave become such a minefield that it seemsreasonable to turn to formulae and algorithms,in the comely shape of dating apps, to selectpotential partners.But can a robot really play cupid?“None of the apps is perfect,” says Dr NicosGeorgiou, a Senior Lecturer in Mathematics atthe University of Sussex who can apply his specialismin probability and statistics to understanddating strategies.“From a statistical perspective, the best strategyfor an app like Tinder is to ‘swipe right’, or acceptevery ‘like’, to give yourself the largest poolof people. However, your chances of successdepend on you being more desirable than others,while the most desirable people who havethe widest choice often behavereally badly.”The apps that create matchesbased on similar personality traitsare also seriously flawed, saysNicos. “They don’t take humanelements into account. You don’tnecessarily want to be with someonewho has all the traits that youdon’t like about yourself.”Once you’ve made a connection, other aspectsof game theory come into play. If it looks like it’sall going well and you then think you’ve been“ghosted” (ignored) by your date, you couldbecome a victim of your own insecurities.As Nicos explains: “If you’re not feeling confidentabout yourself, you’ll then judge someoneelse based on your own experience and make thedecision to end the relationship – which couldbe the worst outcome for both of you.”Aside from dating apps, another mathematicalexample, the Acceptance Triangle, depressinglysuggests that your chance of finding the personof your dreams (or at least better than averageaccording to the criteria you have set) is lessthan 50 per cent.But there is a ray of light offered in Parrondo’sParadox, a complicated theory involving losingstrategies that counter-intuitively shows howincompatible personalities, or personalities thatindividually may seem undesirable, can have agood relationship by strengthening each other.“If people are easily discouraged by data theyshouldn’t go on dating apps,” says Nicos. “However,Parrondo’s Paradox suggests that nobodyshould lose hope.” Jacqui BealingNicos is a regular contributor to BBC Radio 4’sPuzzle for Today81
