Kids Worship 

Augustine said that in singing together a congregation “prays in unison.” The practice 

of joining together in songs in worship is more ancient even than the psalms and continues 

today as we gather together to praise our Lord. 

Before people had access to Bibles they could take home to read, hymns provided a 

way for Christians to be formed in the faith. Theological beliefs were preached in sermons and 

then sung corporately through the stanzas of hymns. These songs spun a thread connecting 

people from different countries, different backgrounds, and different experiences, stitching all 

into the body of Christ. 

Today, singing hymns together remains a vital part of our collective worship at First 

Baptist. In order to tap into a rich and ever-evolving collection of hymnody, our church made 

the decision to purchase new and updated hymnals. Choosing the right hymnal took prayerful 

discernment and dedication. And for the past year and a half we have enjoyed our new 

“Celebrating Grace” hymnals. 

This month, we will celebrate and dedicate these new hymnals with a special Music on 

the Corner event. On Sunday, February 16, we will gather at 4:00 in the sanctuary. Dr. 

Deborah Loftis, retired professor at Baptist Theological Seminary and former executive 

director of The Hymn Society in the United States and Canada, will join us to provide insights 

into the creation of the hymnal and the importance of congregational singing. 

As we gather, we will sing old favorites and learn new hymns together. Our own 

chancel choir, soloists, and ensembles will lead us as we explore hymns designated for each 

season of the church year. And, as we close our time together, we will dedicate this new 

hymnal to the glory of God and to our shared life together.

Lori’s “Senior” Moments 

The Gift of Aging 

My body is older, Lord, and doesn’t move as freely as it once did, but I thank you for this gift of 

aging. As I move through life more slowly, I capture more of what is going on around me- the 

beauty of nature, the kind words of friends, the smiles of children eager to learn the mysteries of 

life, the needs of others. 

There is joy in not having to race! The bliss of knowing who I am, Your child. The joy of being 

content with whatever the circumstances in my life, and the tasks you would have me to do. I 

know from past experiences that “enough” will always come from you. 

Instead of feeling that the best years are gone, I appreciate the true beauty of this time in my 

life- the love and loyalty from spouse and friends, the fellowship of believers with my church 

family. The spiritual growth I still seek, the assurance of your constant presence with me. 

I thank you Lord for my life and the fact that you continue to work through me. Please deepen 

my relationship with you and guide my every step. Thank you for the comfort of knowing that 

when this life ends, another more radiant life will begin in Your glorious kingdom!

FBC Kids 

Time and time again I leave a Wednesday evening or Sunday morning with a huge smile on my 

face, completely inspired and encouraged by the FBC kids! They are funny, thoughtful, and full of 

questions and observations. They look for ways to make the world better, and they always make 

my own world better! 

It is time to give them the opportunity to help lead our worship services. Bible Friends only serves 

our younger school agers; beyond 2nd/3rd grade; our children are encouraged to join us in 

worship. Beginning this month, our children are going to step into various roles during our 

worship service. I hope you enjoy watching them learn and grow as much as I do! 

As we encourage our FBC kids in worship, please also consider helping their faith develop 

through Sunday school, Nursery and Bible friends. We can always use new mentors, teachers, and 

volunteers!

At the Ridge 

2019 was an amazing year for HRR in so many ways. We served more than 1700 guests and 

served groups as large as 84 guests. These retreats and large groups contributed to HRR having 

$47K more in income than expenses for the year. In December, we were able to purchase a new 

reach in fridge for the lodge kitchen to replace the 25 year old unit, using a portion of HRR’s 

2019 Capital Campaign distribution. 

We are so excited about what God has done for HRR in 

2019 and what He is doing here at Hunting Ridge in 

2020. This year will bring an 18 hole miniature golf 

course that was donated by Bryce Resort, a Gaga pit, and 

more importantly lots of retreats with youth and adults 

alike, growing in their relationship with Christ. 

2020 also holds plans for some capital improvement 

projects. One of those projects includes the start of 

removing and replacing the exterior boards, doors, and 

windows on the cabins. Our capital improvements are 

possible because of your continuing support of the 

Capital Fundraising Campaign. We are so grateful. 

Please continue to keep HRR, our guests and our staff in 

your prayers! We are looking forward to another great 

year and all that God has planned!

Thank you, thank you, thank you to Women On Mission for 

the wonderful partnership on Saturday, January 25, 2020. 

What a great Saturday it was to stand side by side with the 

ladies from WOM and the parents who were registering their 

children for the 2020-2021 school year at ‘Son’ Shine 

Learning Center. It was a great morning of fellowship and 

service as we made 550 sandwiches for CCAP and the most 

fabulous and nourishing soup for our brothers and sisters 

who need a little bit of assistance with food at this time of 

year. Your fellowship with the SLC parents meant more than 

I can fully express.

As we celebrate the coming month of Love in February my 

thoughts go to the phenomenal WATTS mission that First 

Baptist Church has supported for many years. As in the past 

years ‘Son’ Shine Learning Center’s families will offer our bit 

of help by collecting personal care items to be given to guests 

during our week. 

The staff of SLC is delighted to be able to make and serve a 

meal for WATTS on Tuesday, February 11, 2920. We are so 

grateful for the opportunity to be included in the wonderful 

work that the congregation of FBC continues to do in our 

community.

“Super” Jewelry Sale 

Vintage jewelry will be offered for sale on 

February 2 at the annual Souper Bowl luncheon 

in the CEB. 

Sales will be by free will donation and will 

benefit the church Capital Campaign. 

The next Thursday morning Bible Study will 

be on the religion of past United States 

Presidents. This winter/spring the first sixteen 

Presidents will be covered, from Washington to 

Lincoln. The study will be held in the lower 

auditorium on Thursdays from 9:30 to 11:00, 

and will be ending in mid-May. Coffee and 

other refreshments will be available for each 

session. There will be no cost for participants. 

It would be helpful to know about how many 

participants there will be. Please tell Kathy in 

the church office or Bob Stainback if you plan 

to participate by January 3 rd. If you have any

AGELESS ADVENTURERS 

On Tuesday, Feb. 18 we will have our Valentine's Luncheon 

at Magnolia's at the Mill in Purcellville, Va. We will depart the 

church at 10:30 a.m. The deadline for reservations is Feb. 12, 

2020. Plan to come join us for a lovely lunch and wonderful 

fellowship! 

WATTS WEEK 

For First Baptist Church our WATTS Week is February 8-15, 

2020. WATTS volunteer sign-up is now taking place in the 

new narthex. You may also contact the church office or 

Cheryl Winston (662-4645). In addition to volunteers, we are 

asking for donations of men’s and women’s socks, 

underwear, travel 

FBC FIBRE FRIENDS 

The group will meet once a month for creative fellowship 

with knitting, crochet, needlepoint, or other fibre craft 

project. The winter dates remaining are February 23 and 

March 22, 2:00-4:00pm, in the 301 House. This event is family 

friendly and children are encouraged to bring their own 

crafts. Please RSVP to Amy Darsie (540-303-0264) the week 

of each event. 

MEMORY CAFÉ 

The Memory Café is hosted by Westminster-Canterbury and 

The Hideaway Café, will be held on Wednesday, February 5, 

at 10:30am. The Hideaway Café, a safe and comfortable 

space where care-partners and their loved ones living with 

dementia and Alzheimer’s can gather to socialize, play games, 

and enjoy activities together, is located at 141 South Loudoun 

Street. This is a free event and will be scheduled on the first 

Wednesday of each month.

Women on Mission and “Son”Shine Learning Center prepared 530 

sandwiches and 137 pints of soup for CCAP on Saturday, January 25!
