Expedition to Burundi
Objective:
Improve and increase
life expectancy.
Burundi is one of the poorest countries in
the world, due in part to the lack of coastline,
its poor legal system, poor access to
education and the proliferation of HIV /
AIDS.
Approximately 80% of the population lives
below the poverty line.
For years, they suffered a Civil War between
Hutus and Tutsis, finally coming to
peace, in 2008
The vast majority of society remains rural,
with only 13% of the population living in urban
areas
Burundi’s health care is much lower than
that of other countries. The life expectancy
is 50.4 years. A significant percentage of the
population suffers from malnutrition. At the
beginning of 2000 there were 3 doctors per
thousand inhabitants.
Surgical Centre Medico-Chirurgical - Medical Centre of of Kinindo CMCK
Kinindo Medical Center-Chirurgical Hospital (CMCK) is located in the town of Bujumbura, the capital of
Burundi. It attracts patients from all over the city and nearby.
The country has 1 bed per 1000 inhabitants.

Micky.
Before surgery.
Micky.
Newly operated.
Micky, to
whom we
operate
the tongue,
can speak
usually
Micky is a malformed child, who has no ears, therefore he
suffers from hearing loss, as well as a tongue malformation
that makes speech difficult.
At 5 years old, he has serious problems with hearing and
language. For this reason the family has brought him to us
so that we can operate him and we have performed a reconstruction
of the tongue and at a later stage we will handle
the ear malformation.
If you wish, you can help, with your donations, so other children like
Micky can be operated by our team on an upcoming mission.
Interview with
Dr. Francisco López Muñoz
Francisco López Muñoz (Montizón, 1964) is a Doctor of Medicine and Surgery and Extraordinary Doctorate Award from
the Complutense University, specialist in Pharmaceutical Medicine and Doctor in Spanish Language and Literature from
the University of Alcalá. He is currently Professor of Pharmacology, President of the Research Ethics Committee and Vice
Chancellor of Research, Science and Doctorate of the Camilo José Cela University.
Which is your opinion on the Clarós Foundation missions?
Some years ago, from the mouth of Dr. Pedro Clarós himself, I learned about the Clarós Foundation and its humanitarian
surgical missions in different countries. I then inquired about them and discovered the enormous work they have carried
out in more than 112 missions of selfless help to the most unprotected, needy and vulnerable population for more than
25 years. I have known how healthcare professionals give up their deserved vacations and the comfort of their home to
help those who need it most, and even at the expense of their own pecunium. I wanted to see it with my eyes, and I
have already seen it ..., and as the great Charles Dickens said, “a day spent on others, it is always a day spent on oneself.”
Which is your function in the FC missions?
This mission has been my first experience in the field of health cooperation. My goal in this mission has been triple.
On the one hand, know first hand the work and activities carried out in this type of missions, its organization, performance
and logistics, in order to enhance the collaboration established between the Clarós Foundation and the Camilo
José Cela University Foundation and analyze the possibility of permanent integration of health professionals linked to our
institution that have this altruistic vocation to help the most vulnerable. On the other hand, to carry out a specific task
of advising and training local professionals in pharmacological matters and specifically in relation to the optimization of
the operation of hospital pharmacies and about access to cooperative medicine. Finally, put myself at the service of the
director of the mission for everything that, on a day-to-day basis, may be needed, either inside or outside the operating
room, because I have been able to clearly verify that this type of mission is being served (and not to be served).
How would you summarize in one phrase the evaluation of the mission?
How human generosity demolishes walls that seem, beforehand, impassable.
