(PhotoCourtesy Medway Public Schools)On Monday, Jan. 13, MedwayMiddle School hosted Vaping:Keeping Your Child Safe andHidden in Plain Sight, presentedby Medway T.H.R.I.V.E and theSAFE Coalition. Parents and studentswere invited to attend theevent together. The school alsoheld a vaping awareness presentationfor seventh and eighthgradestudents earlier in the day.“We appreciate all of the parentsthat took time out of theirbusy day to come and learnmore about the dangers vapingposes to their teens,” said Dr.Sherman. “The parents that attendedgot the opportunity tolearn more about this epidemicand ask questions of a certifiedhealthcare professional. We lookforward to the subsequent conversationswithin our district thatwill follow this informational program.”The event began with an interactiveexhibit, Hidden in PlainSight, hosted by the SAFE Coalition.Members of the SAFECoalition led parents throughoutthe exhibit and conducted asubsequent question and answersession. The exhibit featured amock set-up of a teen’s bedroomto offer adults insight into whatdrug paraphernalia teens may behiding in their rooms.Following the exhibit, parentswere invited to listen to Dr. LesterHartman of Boston Children’sHospital and Westwood-MansfieldPediatrics present about thedangers of Juuling and the riskvaping poses to teens’ health.In his presentation, Dr. Hartmandiscussed with parents howvape products can be appealingto teens. Throughout the presentation,he showed parents the latestdevices that will be introducedor have already entered the market.He also shared informationand the statistics surroundingvaping and the effects it has onindividuals’ health.About Medway T.H.R.I.V.E.:Medway T.H.R.I.V.E. There are many rolesinvolved in CPR such as chestcompressions, rescue breathing,finding/retrieving an AED, thatare suitable for rescuers of anyage.” Polimeno explains thatCPR also trains students to recognizeand intervene in the casesof choking as well, giving themskills and steps to administer aid.returned a completed report ofrecommendations to SuperintendentPires. Alongwith the elementary curriculumtransition, Medway MiddleSchool health educators weretrained in skills-based instruction.The approach is expected to tobe used for the full kindergartenthrough grade eight health programby the end of the 2020-2021 school year.In the area of physical educationand activity, before andafter school exercise programswere examined and expanded tohelp determine how kids can getthe recommended 60 minutes ofactivity each day not only whenthey’re in school, but also whenthey are not in school. The districthas also begun to examinewhat it can do to ensure a saferwalk for students to and fromschool.In regard to nutrition and environmentalservices, the WeekendBackpack Program wasexpanded to McGovern Elementaryafter seeing great success atBurke-Memorial Elementary.Almost 30 bags of food are packagedper week for McGovernstudents, and another almost 20for Burke-Memorial students.
