PERMANENT ENDOWMENT

FOR MARTHA’S VINEYARD

2018 ANNUAL REPORT

DAVID FOSTER

The Endowment honors

the past, funds the present

and invests in the future.

Dear Friends,

As we look back over the accomplishments

and opportunities of 2018, what stands out

is the active purpose behind our mission —

to help our Island community in creative

and strategic ways.

This led us to establish new funds and build new relationships, all with

the goal of filling an unmet need or launching a new, promising initiative.

The majority of our work remains centered on grant making to Island

non-profits and providing scholarships to our students. To that end, and

since our founding in 1982, we have awarded more than $7.1 million to

support those dual core efforts.

Yet, as always, the Board of the Endowment seeks to do more, to expand

our reach — always open to new approaches. What we hear and continue to

find is that we’re fortunate to live in such a thoughtful, committed community

whose members dedicate time and effort to solve problems and enrich Island

life. The stumbling block is often how to be effective without necessarily

taking on the burden and expense of creating a new non-profit organization.

What has emerged is an expanded fund program for initiatives that align

with our mission. This includes a thorough vetting process which reviews

requests and monitors the progress of individual projects. For some programs,

we provide a launching pad towards an end goal of becoming a stand-alone

non-profit. For others, we offer ongoing administrative support freeing them

to focus on the work at hand.

New project funds in 2018 include creative ways to support the Vineyard’s

fragile environment, activities to help individual Island towns, housing for the

homeless, additional art for the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital and a workshop

for aspiring writers. In addition, we welcomed the endowed Mary I. Medeiros

Scholarship Fund for students pursuing a teaching career, as well as a new

donor advised fund for Martha’s Vineyard Community Services.

At the Endowment, we view our work as a community resource for our

Island that continues to evolve and change. Thanks to supporters like you,

our efforts make a big difference impacting the lives of all of those who

call the Vineyard home.

Sincerely,

A Year in

$7.1 Million

has been awarded to the

Island community since

our founding in 1982.

FUND SPOTLIGHT

Wendy Weisman Jenkinson

Culinary Arts Fund

Hugh and Suzy Weisman created this Fund

in 2008 in memory of their daughter Wendy,

a bright, vibrant, warm and creative woman

who loved cooking, her family and her friends.

Her career included stints in many Island

restaurants, a degree from Le Cordon Bleu,

and her own Island business, Periwinkle

Catering. This Fund was established to help

young Islanders find the joy in cooking that

Wendy had and to give that pleasure to others.

Funded through the generosity of her family

and friends, the Wendy Weisman Jenkinson

Culinary Arts Fund has given $66,500 in

scholarships to 10 students pursuing culinary

careers, as well as funding Middle School

Cooking classes under the auspices of

Island Grown Initiative.

Colin Hickey (Johnson & Wales University), Suzy Weisman,

Julia Sauter (Culinary Institute of America), and Hugh Weisman.

SCHOLARSHIP SPOTLIGHT

HEATHER SLAYTON, ST. ANDREWS

Eliza Gowell

Recipient of scholarships from the Amaral,

Rappaport and Rego Funds from 2009 to 2018.

Eliza is a 2019 graduate of the University

of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, and

will begin her residency at Tufts in September.

“ The Permanent Endowment has been

instrumental in my path towards becoming a

dentist. As a recipient of various scholarships

since 2009, the Endowment has supported me

from the beginning through dental school. I'm

indebted to teachers at the high school who helped

me to think critically and my mentor, Dr. Sandy

Nadelstein, who first planted the idea in my

head and has been a role model as clinician and

caregiver. The support from the Endowment has

allowed me to take the time to apply myself to my

studies and hone my techniques so I can be the best

provider I can be when I ultimately return home

to serve my community.”

FIELD OF INTEREST SPOTLIGHT

Island Clergy Emergency

Homeless Fund

Father Chip Seadale, in concert with other members of

the Island Clergy, created this fund to address the needs

of those without, or faced with imminent loss of housing.

In addition to offering emergency assistance to at risk

homeowners, this fund supports Houses of Grace which

provides overnight shelter during the winter months in Island

churches, including St. Andrews Church in Edgartown.

Grants

Since 1982 the Endowment has put your charitable

contributions to work by making thoughtful grants

to Island organizations that address ongoing and

emerging community needs. In 2018, $214,885

was awarded though a competitive grant process to

58 Island non-profits from our endowed grant funds.

Martha’s Vineyard Fishermen’s

Preservation Trust

The fishing communities and harbors of

Martha’s Vineyard and the way of life that

has been established by generations of its

commercial fishermen are essential to the

island’s culture. Today, the high prices of

fishing permits and quota have made

commercial fishing unattainable for the

island’s small-boat fishing fleets. The MVFPT

is building a permit bank to support the

island’s small-boat owner-operated fishermen

and their sustainably harvested catch.

and enhancement.

VINEYARD INDEPENDENCE PARTNERSHIP

Felix Neck

Felix Neck is a sanctuary for both wildlife and people, protecting

some of the Vineyard’s most valuable habitats and wildlife and most

spectacular views. Endowment grants supported both: “Felix Neck

at 50”, a year-long program of special events and activities to raise

awareness and celebrate nature exploration and appreciation;

and the opening of the new Felix Neck Preschool.

Haven Band

The Vineyard Haven Band,

founded in 1868, is comprised

of musicians who play

traditional concert band

music on brass, woodwind

and percussion instruments.

The Band celebrated their

150th anniversary with a

concert at the Tabernacle to

commemorate this special

year in its history.

“ The band concerts are truly America in so many

ways. There is an ever changing, multi generational

audience. The settings are themselves breathtaking

at times. I think it can be safely said that there

is nothing else like it. A park is a park, people are

people, but when The Vineyard Haven Band is

added, there is community and gratitude. Truly,

‘a national treasure.’”

CREATIVE LIVING AWARD

Trip Barnes

On a warm September evening, at the

Agricultural Society Hall where he has

been a long time trustee, Trip Barnes was

awarded the 2018 Creative Living Award.

Trip’s front porch and office were recreated

at the Hall and friends stopped by to share

their stories with and about Trip.

MARK ALAN LOVEWELL, VINEYARD GAZETTE

Sharing good stories and tales of derring-do

were 1994 CLA winner, artist and farmer

Allen Whiting, and Ross Gannon who with

his partner Nat Benjamin are the creators

of the wooden boat mecca in Vineyard

Haven and were the CLA winners in 2010.

Allen Whiting, Trip Barnes and Ross Gannon

ABOUT OUR COVER “Great Pond” Oil, 2018, by Allen Whiting

Allen was born on Martha’s Vineyard where he has spent most of his life farming and recording landscapes with charcoal and paints.

His paintings hang in the Davis House Gallery in West Tisbury, in various island businesses and in private and public collections around

the world. Visit his website allenwhiting.com. Allen received the Creative Living Award in 1994.
