Car show shines on 500 models
By Bud Wells
Don’t miss it – the
biggest car show
between Chicago and
Los Angeles.
It’s one of the Rocky
Mountains’ greatest
springtime events,
the 2019 Denver Auto
Show, which will open its doors to the
Colorado Convention Center at 5 p.m.
Wednesday.
Two new compact pickups, the Ford
Ranger and Jeep Gladiator, will be among
highlights; they’ll compete in sales with
established models Toyota Tacoma,
Nissan Frontier, Chevy Colorado and GMC
Canyon. Also, the all-electric Nissan Leaf
Plus, making claims of 226 miles on a full
charge and fresh into dealer showrooms.
More than 500 new cars, trucks and
SUVs from 32 manufacturers will fill the
convention center show hall. Take a look
at the Bentley Bentayga, Audi e-tron
Quattro, Honda Passport, Lincoln Aviator,
Volkswagen Arteon.
The auto show will continue through
Sunday, March 31. Hours are 5 to 10 p.m.
Wednesday, noon to 10 p.m. on Thursday
and Friday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, and
10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
Admissions are $14 for adults and $7
for kids ages 6-to-12; children younger
than 6 are admitted without charge.
Military servicemen and veterans with
appropriate military identification
will be admitted free on opening night
Wednesday. Admission on Thursday,
Senior Day, will be $7 for guests 65 and
older.
Preceding the show’s Wednesday
opening will be the Preview Gala on
Tuesday evening, featuring former Denver
Nuggets’ coach George Karl.
An early start to the auto show
excitement today (Sunday) is the 12th
annual Green Car Parade, as 25 energyefficient
cars and
trucks will be
displayed from
1:30 to 3 p.m. at
the Colorado State
Capitol circle drive.
Shortly after 3, the
vehicles will drive a
parade route to the
convention center.
Among the “green
cars” will be the
Jaguar I-Pace, BMW
i8, Kia Niro PHEV,
Chevrolet Bolt and
Ford Fusion Energi.
“A lot has changed
since our first
Green Car Parade,”
said Tim Jackson,
president/CEO
of the Colorado
Automobile Dealers
Association. “More
varieties of cars and
trucks have turned
‘green’ with the addition of luxury brands
and increasingly improved technologies
by manufacturers to give consumers
better mileage, more choice and options,
and more ways to reduce carbon
emissions.”
This year’s extravaganza will be its 42nd
consecutive since Bill Barrow resurrected
the show after being hired to oversee the
Colorado Automobile Dealers Association
(CADA) in 1977. After 11 years without a
new-car show in Denver, Barrow and the
dealer organization moved into Currigan
Exhibition Hall May 31 through June 4,
1978, with their newest models. Teaming
with Barrow, the dealers on the 1978 auto
show committee were Hugh Tighe, Steve
Dowson, Joe Fadely, Ann Goodro, Johnny
Haas, Bud Karsh, C.F. Pansing, Bob Post,
Chuck Ruwart and Ken Stiner.
The Colorado Convention Center, which
opened in 1990, has hosted the Denver
Auto Show since 1991.
Drawing much attention at the car show will be the 2019 Ford Ranger, which has been out of production seven years. (Bud
Wells photo)
The 2019 edition of the big show is
headed by Jackson, the CADA boss, and
Fletcher Flower of Flower Motor Co. in
Montrose, who is auto show chairman for
CADA. Jackson, who succeeded Barrow
in 2005, has earned national recognition
for his travel all over the country on
behalf of auto industry issues; an opinion
column of his was featured last week in
Automotive News of Detroit. Flower’s
dealership is one of three which has
operated more than 100 years in Colorado
(the others are O’Meara and Schomp).
The 2019 Denver Auto Show is presented
by the Colorado Automotive Dealers
Association, and produced by Paragon
Group, Inc.

Lighter Sierra Denali adds tailgate wonder
The Sierra Denali 1500 gets tested in a Colorado winter. (Bud Wells photo)
By Bud Wells
Don’t miss the GMC
display, right in the
middle of the Colorado
Convention Center’s
huge floor plan for the
Denver Auto Show.
A highlight is the
restyled 2019 Sierra Denali 1500 Crew Cab
pickup. Out front is a larger grille, which
so quickly identifies the truck as a GMC,
and a more massive hood, which stands
53 inches tall. It houses a strong, smooth
420-horsepower, 6.2-liter V-8 engine and
10-speed automatic transmission.
That’s the front; wait’ll you see the
Sierra’s rear end and its new tailgate.
On one of those cold, single-digit nights
of which we’ve had so many this winter,
with snow on the ground and wind
blowing, I stood behind the pickup in
my driveway with Brent Wells, Colin
Lindenmayer and Matt Ward. We looked
at the “tailgate within a tailgate” which
showed up on the just-introduced truck
and is drawing attention to GMC.
I had lowered the inner gate two stops,
which left it protruding out as some sort
of ledge or table surface or whatever.
Ward knew to push one more button – the
gate flipped one more time and suddenly
was in place as a three-step entry into the
bed of the pickup. A short post emerged
to be pulled into place for an assist in
stepping up into the pickup box.
The feature is known as the MultiPro
tailgate and GMC says it offers use as an
easy step-up, a workbench, handier access
to the bed or a seat at a tailgate party.
The new Sierra is 360 pounds lighter
than the outgoing model; the weight-loss
secret was through use of aluminum
doors, hood and tailgate, and a carbonfiber
composite bed that is lighter and
tougher, GMC said, than a conventional
steel bed. The Denali is the flagship of the
next-generation Sierra
lineup.
“Along with bold
design and premium
features, the new one
ups the ante in the
segment with exclusive
ride and handling
and performance
technologies,” said Rich
Latek, marketing director
of GMC. “They include
new Adaptive Ride Control
and the most powerful
V-8 engine available in the
class.”
Small storage spaces and
large bins are positioned
around the interior,
including dual glove
compartments. A 3-inch
gain in length of the
four-door cabin is devoted
to the rear seating area.
Power running boards
deploy when the door is
opened, easing the climb
into the luxurious cabin.
The Sierra Denali Crew Cab is built in Fort
Wayne, Ind.
An advanced cylinder-deactivation
system lets the 6.2 Sierra run on a single
cylinder or any other number of them to
the full eight in certain driving conditions.
The 1500, which continues to use rear leaf
springs in its suspension system, corners
very well and offers a comfortable ride. Its
EPA fuel estimate is 15/20 miles per gallon.
New to the GMC Sierra is the MultiPro tailgate. (GMC)
Among optional engines to the big 6.2
are a 5.3-liter V-8 and new 3.0-liter, inline-
6-cylinder turbodiesel.
Forward-collision alert, low-speed
forward automatic braking and lanekeep
assist are part of a Denali Ultimate
package. Among other Denali amenities,
besides the MultiPro tailgate, are 22-
inch polished aluminum wheels, power
sunroof and multicolor head-up display.

Beneath the glitter – the power source
By Bud Wells
An ever-expanding number of
alternatively fueled vehicles will be
scattered over the convention center hall
this week, though it may require a look
past the gleaming, gorgeous, glistening,
sleek, brilliantly finished cars and trucks.
The differences aren’t visibly prominent
– the power sources under hood, under
trunk and under floor
Twenty years ago, there were no hybrids
or electrics among the auto show displays;
the first gas/electric hybrid appeared in
2000 and plug-ins and all-electrics began
multiplying five to 10 years ago. Today,
there are far more than 100 hybrid/plugin
hybrid and all-electric models offered
for sale in the U.S.
Many will be featured throughout the
auto show confines, including the Nissan
Leaf Plus, fresh into dealer showrooms,
making claims of 226 miles on a full
charge. Also the Chevy Bolt EV and
Hyundai Kona with ranges topping 200
miles.
Look, too, for the Jaguar i-Pace, Kia e-Niro,
BMW 530e and the newest Honda Insight,
a gas-electric hybrid earning a 55-milesper-gallon
estimate in city driving.
Satisfying to me in January was a
smooth, advanced test of a luxury gas/
electric hybrid automobile – the 2019
Lexus LC 500h Coupe. The sleek
product is an excellent blend of
appearance and performance.
Lexus labels it a “world-class
luxury coupe, with enhanced
steering, suspension and braking.”
Combined with a
295-horsepower, Atkinson-cycle
3.5-liter V-6 engine are two electric
motors and a lithium-ion battery
pack, with total output of 354-hp.
The power system is tied to a
revolutionary transmission setup
which incorporates a continuously
variable tranny and an Aisin
4-speed automatic to the engine
and motors.
With the new transmission
system, I felt actual shift points
when the LC was being powered
by the gas engine, eliminating
most of the droning associated
with many CVT-equipped vehicles.
It is a strong runner, and will clip
off the 0-to-60 in under 5 seconds;
don’t confuse it, though, with the gas-only
LC500 luxury coupe, which is much more
powerful with its 471-horsepower V-8
engine. The 500h looks the same, with its
long, tapered hood and well-defined rear
haunches.
The interior is finished beautifully
with alcantra headliner and toasted
The stylish, hybrid version of the 2019 Lexus LC 500. (Bud Wells photo)
caramel leather with satin metallic trim,
and enhanced with its Mark Levinson
surround-sound system .
A drive of 250 miles rolled up an a fuelmileage
reading of 30.3 miles per gallon,
not bad for the 4,500-pound coupe. The
hybrid is rated at 27 in the city and 35
on the highway. Included in its secure
braking is a regenerative function for the
hybrid side.
Its trunk space is only 4.7cubic feet, other
adjacent space is devoted to the battery
pack behind the rear seats. The Lexus LC
models are built in Aichi, Japan.

MUST-HAVES for your next vehicle
Serious technology for your safety
Buying a new car, SUV, minivan or
truck is always a thrill! After choosing
the model and color interior, here
are technological features worthy of
consideration. Some are downright
cool and some will sit quietly in the
background, but all help drivers stay safe
on the road. In fact, some will even do
a few tedious driving tasks. Ready to
explore your options?
INTELLIGENT CRUISE
CONTROL WITH DISTANCE
ADJUSTMENT
Cruise control has been around for
decades, of course, but in recent years it
has been advanced with radar and other
sensing technology. The result is not
only a system that maintains speed but
one that also maintains a distance from
the vehicle ahead. It can slow down and
speed up with the flow of traffic, and
many systems also will come to a full
stop and then start up when the vehicles
ahead move.
SELF STEERING
Many brands and models offer self
steering as an option. While imperfect,
these systems’ ability to keep the vehicle
in the lane by observing the lines in the
road is quite impressive and helpful. Self
steering systems will always warn in real
time if a situation requires the driver to
take the wheel.
LANE DEPARTURE/BLIND
SPOT WARNING
Lane departure and blind spot warning
systems have been offered for a number
of years and they are quite effective in
letting the driver know that another
vehicle is in a blind spot or is otherwise
too close in the next lane. Most
manufacturers now offer technology
that actually makes it harder to change
lanes in those situations by tightening
the steering, vibrating and/or sounding
alarms, thus making drivers aware of the
need to stay in their lane.
AUTOMATIC BRAKING
Typically coupled with intelligent cruise
control, automatic braking is quickly
becoming a major safety benefit. By
sensing vehicles, objects and people
ahead (and behind in some backup
systems) it will automatically stop
vehicles in time to avoid a collision.
Sensors update the vehicle’s computers
hundreds of times per second allowing
the car to “think and read” faster than the
human brain.
SELF PARKING
Various parking assist systems have
been around for over a decade. Originally
only able to parallel park, these systems
can now also back into slotted parking
spaces. Once lined close to the space, self
parking systems can typically park the
vehicle in 20 seconds.
REAR CROSS TRAFFIC
ALERT
Backup cameras are terrific devices
and most vehicles are now equipped
with them. One extra feature to look for,
however, is rear cross traffic alert. This
warns the driver that a vehicle or person
is approaching as the vehicle is slowly
backing up, providing plenty of warning.
BACKUP COLLISION
INTERVENTION
Another beneficial feature is backup
collision intervention. It’s simply
automatic braking while in reverse, and is
one more level of protection from backing
into something – or someone.
AND A COUPLE MORE
NOT TO MISS!
Auto-Dimming
Headlights
While not an absolute necessity, this
technology is being offered on a wide
variety of new vehicles. It automatically
turns on high beams for maximum
visibility and dims them when sensing
oncoming traffic ahead.
Heads-Up Display
Heads-up displays have been available
since the 1990s, but very few buyers opt to
have them. A number of manufacturers
offer this worthwhile feature. Needed
information is contained in a virtual
display projected on the windshield,
limiting the driver’s need to look down at
instruments and controls. Some versions
have infrared sensors that project
animate objects ahead, allowing the
driver to better see a person or animal in
the roadway.
Vehicles with the newest technological
features will be on display at the Denver
Auto Show at the Colorado Convention
Center, March 27-31, 2019.
