Sunday, March 24, 2019 S3Bud WellsCar show shines on 500 modelsBy Bud WellsDon’t miss it – thebiggest car showbetween Chicago andLos Angeles.It’s one of the RockyMountains’ greatestspringtime events,the 2019 Denver AutoShow, which will open its doors to theColorado Convention Center at 5 p.m.Wednesday.Two new compact pickups, the FordRanger and Jeep Gladiator, will be amonghighlights; they’ll compete in sales withestablished models Toyota Tacoma,Nissan Frontier, Chevy Colorado and GMCCanyon. Also, the all-electric Nissan LeafPlus, making claims of 226 miles on a fullcharge and fresh into dealer showrooms.More than 500 new cars, trucks andSUVs from 32 manufacturers will fill theconvention center show hall. Take a lookat the Bentley Bentayga, Audi e-tronQuattro, Honda Passport, Lincoln Aviator,Volkswagen Arteon.The auto show will continue throughSunday, March 31. Hours are 5 to 10 p.m.Wednesday, noon to 10 p.m. on Thursdayand Friday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, and10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.Admissions are $14 for adults and $7for kids ages 6-to-12; children youngerthan 6 are admitted without charge.Military servicemen and veterans withappropriate military identificationwill be admitted free on opening nightWednesday. Admission on Thursday,Senior Day, will be $7 for guests 65 andolder.Preceding the show’s Wednesdayopening will be the Preview Gala onTuesday evening, featuring former DenverNuggets’ coach George Karl.An early start to the auto showexcitement today (Sunday) is the 12thannual Green Car Parade, as 25 energyefficientcars andtrucks will bedisplayed from1:30 to 3 p.m. atthe Colorado StateCapitol circle drive.Shortly after 3, thevehicles will drive aparade route to theconvention center.Among the “greencars” will be theJaguar I-Pace, BMWi8, Kia Niro PHEV,Chevrolet Bolt andFord Fusion Energi.“A lot has changedsince our firstGreen Car Parade,”said Tim Jackson,president/CEOof the ColoradoAutomobile DealersAssociation. “Morevarieties of cars andtrucks have turned‘green’ with the addition of luxury brandsand increasingly improved technologiesby manufacturers to give consumersbetter mileage, more choice and options,and more ways to reduce carbonemissions.”This year’s extravaganza will be its 42ndconsecutive since Bill Barrow resurrectedthe show after being hired to oversee theColorado Automobile Dealers Association(CADA) in 1977. After 11 years without anew-car show in Denver, Barrow and thedealer organization moved into CurriganExhibition Hall May 31 through June 4,1978, with their newest models. Teamingwith Barrow, the dealers on the 1978 autoshow committee were Hugh Tighe, SteveDowson, Joe Fadely, Ann Goodro, JohnnyHaas, Bud Karsh, C.F. Pansing, Bob Post,Chuck Ruwart and Ken Stiner.The Colorado Convention Center, whichopened in 1990, has hosted the DenverAuto Show since 1991.Drawing much attention at the car show will be the 2019 Ford Ranger, which has been out of production seven years. Jackson, who succeeded Barrowin 2005, has earned national recognitionfor his travel all over the country onbehalf of auto industry issues; an opinioncolumn of his was featured last week inAutomotive News of Detroit.
