A Massive Chariot, thousands of devotees and their
undivided love for their diety Lord Jagannath, is the
essence of this grand festival. Every year in the
month of June/July, Lord Jagannath, his brother
Lord Balabhadra, and sister Subhadra, are pulled by
devotees in Chariots on the streets of Puri.
For 2 months devotees/ artisians spend day and night in
the construction of these large than life size Rathas/
Chariots (as high as 45feet). Millions of devotees throng
the streets to get a glimpse of the deities and get their
blessings.
An entire week of celebrations is devoted to religious and
ritualistic ceremonies and various musical and cultural
programs. Well-known classical dancers and singers from
all over the country participate in the week-long
festivities. The festival ends when the deities make
their way back to the Jagannath temple.
