Old West Park Vault Discovered at Cleveland City Hall …by Gary Swilik A vintage safe that once served the independent City of West Park now sits nearly forgotten at Cleveland City Hall in the Treasurer’s office. How and when the heavy vault was transported eight miles from West Park to downtown Cleveland is a mystery. After West Park was annexed to Cleveland on November 7, 1922, its public property, including the city hall building, was turned over to Cleveland. The safe, clearly labeled “City of West Park,” may have been moved to Cleveland at that time. How badly did Cleveland need a safe that someone was willing to haul the heavy object all that way? It just doesn’t seem like something you’d do unless it was really necessary. There must be an untold story behind the move. If any readers can shed light on it, please contact me at 216-252-9850. In about 1977, when the police station moved to its present building on West 130th, the old city hall was torn down. An addition was added to the fire station and now covers the original site of the old city hall. In any case, we’re lucky to have discovered the safe still in existence. The old vault is a significant relic of West Park’s history but now serves only to store office supplies. Perhaps some way can be found to bring it home where it can be put on public display as a reminder of our heritage. Councilman Martin J. Keane has been exploring this possibility for the historical society. Old West Park City Hall on Lorain Avenue, probable onetime home of the safe. This is a great gift for weddings, anniversaries, new homes, store names, baby names, holidays, specialty phrases, and occasions. Names can be in black and white letters. You can do as many as you like. The end product might take a different shape as determined by the letters chosen. Several frame and matting options are available.
