Letter from the Prez<br />
The pinnacle of <strong>Variety</strong>’s year occurs now when its many<br />
volunteers come together to participate in the <strong>Variety</strong><br />
<strong>Telethon</strong>. This year, it will be held on March 3 and 4 in the<br />
newly refurbished Veterans Memorial Community Choice<br />
Credit Union Convention Center Ballroom and broadcast<br />
across the state on ABC5 in Central Iowa, WHBF in the Quad<br />
Cities and KCAU in Sioux City.<br />
The <strong>Telethon</strong> is the culminating event for a year that has<br />
been filled with many very successful events including the<br />
KJJY/Radiothon, Black Tie, Stag, Polo on the Green, and golf<br />
events in both Des Moines and Cedar Rapids. All of these<br />
occasions have had one main goal—to raise money to help<br />
support kids in need who live in our Iowa communities.<br />
<strong>Variety</strong>—The Children’s Charity of Iowa—is a great charity<br />
because of the number of people involved and tremendous<br />
community support. Our State Board, Eastern Iowa<br />
Committee, Young <strong>Variety</strong>, staff, <strong>Telethon</strong> cast, and other<br />
volunteers have worked hard to raise money for the kids.<br />
By the time the <strong>Telethon</strong> is finished, hundreds of volunteers<br />
will have raised money from thousands of Iowans across<br />
the state. I thank each and every one of you for all of your<br />
efforts in making it such a success.<br />
Because of <strong>Variety</strong>’s success over the years, it has been<br />
able to support many children charities through a grant<br />
process that ensures every dollar raised is spent wisely to<br />
support great causes. In addition, we celebrated National<br />
Mobility Day this year by giving away 9 vans to fill significant<br />
transportation needs as well as 50 bikes and 6 specialized<br />
bikes to deserving recipients.<br />
<strong>Variety</strong> has been very fortunate to have wonderful<br />
community support. This past year, we again were<br />
beneficiaries of two outstanding sporting events. The Hy-<br />
Vee Triathlon and the Principal Charity Classic. We very<br />
much appreciate our partnership with these great events.<br />
We are extremely pleased to have Ray and Susan Cole serve<br />
as Honorary Chairs for this year’s <strong>Telethon</strong>. The Coles have<br />
been outstanding supporters of <strong>Variety</strong> and the <strong>Telethon</strong><br />
for many years.<br />
I thank you all for your support of <strong>Variety</strong> and for making<br />
<strong>Variety</strong> the children’s charity of Iowa.<br />
