Letter from the Prez
The pinnacle of Variety’s year occurs now when its many
volunteers come together to participate in the Variety
Telethon. This year, it will be held on March 3 and 4 in the
newly refurbished Veterans Memorial Community Choice
Credit Union Convention Center Ballroom and broadcast
across the state on ABC5 in Central Iowa, WHBF in the Quad
Cities and KCAU in Sioux City.
The Telethon is the culminating event for a year that has
been filled with many very successful events including the
KJJY/Radiothon, Black Tie, Stag, Polo on the Green, and golf
events in both Des Moines and Cedar Rapids. All of these
occasions have had one main goal—to raise money to help
support kids in need who live in our Iowa communities.
Variety—The Children’s Charity of Iowa—is a great charity
because of the number of people involved and tremendous
community support. Our State Board, Eastern Iowa
Committee, Young Variety, staff, Telethon cast, and other
volunteers have worked hard to raise money for the kids.
By the time the Telethon is finished, hundreds of volunteers
will have raised money from thousands of Iowans across
the state. I thank each and every one of you for all of your
efforts in making it such a success.
Because of Variety’s success over the years, it has been
able to support many children charities through a grant
process that ensures every dollar raised is spent wisely to
support great causes. In addition, we celebrated National
Mobility Day this year by giving away 9 vans to fill significant
transportation needs as well as 50 bikes and 6 specialized
bikes to deserving recipients.
Variety has been very fortunate to have wonderful
community support. This past year, we again were
beneficiaries of two outstanding sporting events. The Hy-
Vee Triathlon and the Principal Charity Classic. We very
much appreciate our partnership with these great events.
We are extremely pleased to have Ray and Susan Cole serve
as Honorary Chairs for this year’s Telethon. The Coles have
been outstanding supporters of Variety and the Telethon
for many years.
I thank you all for your support of Variety and for making
Variety the children’s charity of Iowa.
Young Variety
Young Variety has had a very busy and productive 2011/12 year!
We began our year with the welcoming of a new Young Variety
Board in June of 2011, bringing 21 talented young professionals
and philanthropists to the table. Our Board orientation began at
one of our partner charities; Youth Emergency and Shelter
Services, followed by a social at the Kirkwood Lounge.
At the end of the summer, several Young and State Variety Board
members began working with Drake University’s Graduate
Management course to perform an audit of several facets of
Variety – The Children’s Charity. This two-month review process
was presented to our involved members in November, and we were
able to take the Drake student’s insight and catapult the
information into our Strategic Planning process in December,
2011.
The Young Variety Events Committee began filling the
calendar with Coins for Kid’s Thirsty Thursday events held
monthly, which also allowed our Membership Committee to gain
access to a pool of new interested Young Variety advocates. In
October, Young Variety held our first ever TweetUp event in
collaboration with SmartyPig (a mobile-based giving company),
and offered our community a chance to help raise money via
mobile, for a specialized bike. Our Membership Committee began
a drive in November of 2011, and to-date, we have nearly doubled
our paid Young Variety list.
The Young Variety Volunteer Co-Chairs were instrumental in
arranging volunteer opportunities in the Fall to help wrap gifts at
Amanda the Panda, serve on location at the Blank Children’s
Hospital’s Festival of Tree’s, and perhaps the most noteworthy of
all, arranged volunteers for our Bikes for Kid’s events. Variety
hosted one of the largest mobility events in December, giving away
50 bikes, 6 specialized bikes, and 9 vans, to hundreds of deserving
Iowa children.
The beginning of 2012 has started off busier than ever for our
Young Variety board. We have one of the largest Young Variety
VIP panels (42 Young Variety participants) pooled for the
upcoming Variety Telethon to be held on March 3 and 4, and a set
schedule of events leading up to the greatest weekend of the year
for Tent 15.
Under the championing of our Events Committee, our board is
orchestrating our second annual signature Young Variety event;
Project Variety. Slated for April 20, 2012, our board and members
are sure to have a very busy Spring!
Our 2011/2012 Young Variety board has remained committed to
providing new ideas, creating community partnerships, and
always looking for opportunities to support the children of Iowa.
We look forward to the remaining months ahead, and to the future
of Variety – The Children’s Charity!
Susan Hatten
YV President 2010/11
Variety - The Children’s Charity marshalls hole number 11. If you would like to sign up
to volunteer with us, please call the Variety office at 515-243-4660. There is a $75 fee
that covers the cost of the shirt, coat and hat/visor.
Eastern Iowa Happenings
This years Eastern Iowa telethon is on during the Morning,
Midday and Evening newscast on KWWL, news channel 7,
March 5-10. The finale will be on Saturday, March 10th from
7-8 pm.
Telethon is the culmination of a year of hard work by the
Variety Eastern Iowa Committee. Spirits of Spring will be
Friday, April 20th from 7-10 pm; the Marriott Cedar
Rapids will host the 23rd annual Spirits of Spring. Everyone is
invited to sample the delicious hors d’oeuvres, delicious adult
beverages and a fabulous silent auction. Guests will be
tempted by the 300+ fine wines, beer, liquors, specialty
cheeses and gourmet chocolates to sample. Tickets are $40
in advance and $50 at the door and may be purchased at the
Marriott Cedar Rapids, on-line at www.varietyiowa.com or by
calling 319-369-7806.
Variety’s Eastern Iowa committee rewarded 344 of deserving
children with new bikes, helmets and locks throughout the last
year. We worked with the Hillcrest Family Services, Lincoln &
Audubon Elementary schools in Dubuque and Polk &
Taylor Elementary schools in Cedar Rapids. We also had Bikes
For Kids winners in Iowa City and Waterloo. We also gave 19
bikes to children of Habitat For Humanity families. The local
Wal-Mart has been a great partner in making these events
happen.
Each August, our premier event occurs. Tuesday, August 9th,
the Eastern Iowa committee hosted its annual Variety
Leinenkugel Golf Invitational presented by Carlson Building
Maintenance and Diamond Shine Management Services, Inc
at Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids. Two hundred forty
four golfers teed up “fore the kids” of Eastern Iowa. It was a
warm, sunny day that was perfect for golf. Everyone enjoyed
the BBQ lunch donated by Texas Roadhouse and a “lite” fare
dinner provided by Hy-Vee. The volunteer organizers of the
event, led by Wade Chalstrom of the Marion Hy-Vee,
successfully planned a day that included prize opportunities
at all eighteen holes, a putting contest, a skins game, a power
raffle, a silent auction, hole-in-one prizes, and much more. The
planning and hard work paid off when, at the end of the day,
the event raised nearly $60,000 for Eastern Iowa’s kids.
The year ends on a festive note with Santa. The 21st annual
Breakfast With Santa was held at the Marriott in Cedar Rapids
on Friday, December 16th . There were nearly 300 special
needs students from the Cedar Rapids and surrounding school
districts. Numerous volunteers including Fire and Police
officers, clowns, Playtime Poppy and the Washington High
School Madrigal Singers entertained them. Everyone enjoyed
a delicious breakfast and had a chance to visit Santa and get
their picture taken. Each child was sent home with a goodie
bag fill with donations from generous local companies and
filled by our diligent volunteers.
Each year the volunteers in Eastern Iowa work diligently to
raise funds to continue improving the lives of underprivileged,
at-risk and special needs children in our communities.
