We have all heard the expression, “Oh that was better than
a Broadway show!” This is a common analogy drawn when
we have an exuberant experience watching a production
that blows us away. That is what celebrating the seventieth
birthday of the illustrious Prophet/Bishop Phillip E. Owens,
D.D. and forty-third anniversary of his marriage to the
beautiful Elect Lady Patricia A. Owens, D.D. The
spectacular and unexpected happened as the guests
stood up in amazement at every turn of the production.
Headlining the magnificent evening at the Aliante
Showroom in North Las Vegas, Nevada and celebrating the
life and ministry of the most dedicated Shepherd, Spiritual
Leader, Prophet of the end times, Bishop Owens, was a
mystery game of mysterious people. Five members of the
Immanuel’s Temple Systems of Church (ITSC) congregation
unleashed their secret vocal talents. If you had not
previously watched the Fox show “The Masked Singer,” this
rendition of masked vocalists disguised in animal suits made
you want to run to your streaming source and binge watch
it! It was entertaining, hilarious, and jaw dropping as each
amateur contestant’s performance was so unbelievably
professional. It was the biggest suspense ever as the guests
of honor and attendees awaited each reveal behind “the
mask” - heart pounding!
After getting over the shock of the name and face behind
the “masked singer,” Bishop and Elect Lady Owens had to
hold on to their seats of expectation, because “Dancing
with the Vision” kicked off with the spectacular! It was a
variety show of variety shows, storytelling the life, legacy,
and God ordained union of Bishop and Elect Lady Owens.
There were sketches of tap dancing, tango, salsa,
“jitterbug”; bits on their courtship; Motown parodies of
their early marriage; the beginning of their ministry; and
much more! The performances were lively and lifted you up,
out of your seat - exhilarating! Every skit and bit invited you
closer to share a piece of this wonderful life and
journey God has set and planned for two people He found
to be faithful and obedient for over forty-three years!
Giving double honor to forty-three plus years of marriage
and ministry, on top of commemorating seventy years of
the best life, had to be done at an epic scale! The ITSC army
of believers pray and dedicate themselves to a lifetime of
service under sound, anointed, sacrificial leadership. Bishop
and Elect Lady Owens are highly favored of God because
they love and serve Him and His people with all their heart,
soul, mind, and strength. How timely is it to highlight and
aggrandize a day that represents the birth of greatness and
such a perfect union. The hope was for these founders and
leaders of ITSC to leave the night inspired to keep preaching
the truth, to be overwhelmed by all the love, and to be
filled with joy overflowing to strengthen them for the next
chapter of their wonderful life in ministry!
Ever Get the Feeling
Like Someone Is
Watching YOU?
Written by Paris Fundunburks
In the name of security, many technology protections have either been lessened or bypassed in recent history. One
area that is under close surveillance is Facial Recognition technology (pun intended). Some feel this technology is for
protection, others feel it is a way for the government to track the common man. Is the rise of this new technology for
the greater good or is this an entry way for the signs that are mentioned in the book of Revelation?
While facial recognition technology (FRT) has been used by government entities for various reasons such as to search
for criminal suspects in a mass shooting, many have seen this technology as a potential violation of people’s rights as
well as something that can be abused by the government as stated by the New York Times and NPR Technology.
For this reason, there have been efforts made to regulate the use of facial recognition technology. Microsoft urged
Congress to write laws for its facial recognition technology in 2019. While Microsoft intends to use their technology
for the government, they want to ensure that boundaries are set in place to secure the rights of Americans.
Similarly, San Francisco recently became the first major U.S. city to ban the use of facial recognition technology by the
police and other municipal agencies. The ban was fueled by the concern that this technology would fuel racial bias as
researchers found that the technology made mistakes when identifying specific races and those of darker complexion,
which can be problematic when using it to determine suspects for a crime. According to The New York Times, there
will be strict policies in place to ensure appropriate use of FRT.
While strides are being taken to protect our rights as it pertains to facial recognition technology, our everyday cell
phone use can be just as violating. According to marketplace.org, we give away a lot of information through our phones
by using social media, searching things on the web, and the locations that you go to most frequently. Apps are storing
this information whether they are in use or not, and using it to target specific ads towards you.
With more and more of our personal lives readily available one can only wonder if this is the beginning of the end
times mentioned in Revelation, where “no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast,
or the number of his name.” (Rev. 13:17) If all of your favorites are being recorded or that purchase that you can’t live
without, imagine how this information can be used against you.
How can you stay in control of what information is being shared? Marketplace.org suggests to be mindful of the
permissions that you install in your phone. This includes location permissions and allowing apps to run in the
background while you are not using them. Both of these things aid towards sharing your personal information and with
proper knowledge on how they work can prohibit the non-permissible releasing of information.
THE LAW & YOU
IMMIGRATION & INTERNATIONAL LAW:
What You Should Know
Before Traveling to
Eastern Asia (Part 1)
Written by Caleb Green
The role of immigration law is an ever expanding and changing field. These rules can make it difficult
for travelers to navigate the proper procedure for cross border travel. Not only can your knowledge of
immigration and international laws influence where you travel, it may also ensure your freedom and safety
while abroad. This is especially true for anyone traveling to non-democratic, Eastern Asian countries.
Every country has its own laws. As such, when you are traveling to a foreign country, you must familiarize
yourself and follow the customs and legal procedures of the area. Or better said, “when in Rome, do as the
Romans do.”
So, before you pack your bags or set sail on a trip to historic Eastern Asia, here is part 1 of some important
legal tips and tricks to keep in mind.
REGISTER YOUR TRIP WITH THE U.S. EMBASSY
The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a free service offered by the U.S. Department of State’s
Bureau of Consular Affairs to U.S. citizens and nationals traveling out of the country. The program provides
enrollees with important safety and security information and updates from the embassy about safety
conditions in their destination country. It also helps the U.S. embassy, friends and family contact enrollees
in case of an emergency, such as natural disaster, civil unrest or family emergency. Notably, with the recent
outbreak of the coronavirus, it is very prudent for travelers to China and the surrounding areas to register
with STEP as an added layer of protection and peace of mind.
Below are some additional brief tips to consider before you head to Eastern Asia:
• Cooperate with government law enforcement
• Avoid recording or any photography of protests, crime scenes, or government demonstrations
Luke 13:29 - “And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north,
and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God.”
More great tips are to come in our next edition. For more information on this topic,
Finance
Do you consider yourself an average American? If so,
you probably already abandoned your 2020 New Year’s
resolution. According to researchers at OnePoll, the
average American relinquishes their resolution on the
first day of February– only 32 days into the New Year.
What was the number one excuse given by Americans
polled? The lack of self-discipline.
When the Apostle Paul entreated the Galatian church
to bear the fruit of the Spirit, he included the fruit of
temperance (Gal 5:23). And by the grace of GOD, we
can lean on Him and the fruit He gives to stay on track
–or get back on track– to achieve our financial goals in
2020.
One tip that may be helpful for keeping our 2020
financial goals is making sure our goals are simply
written down. GOD told the prophet Habakkuk, “write
the vision and make it plain” (Hab 2:2). Certainly this
scripture was for a prophet speaking to a nation;
however, there is also a sense of accountability
established for us individually when our personal
goals are written out.
is fated to remain a mere wish. Solomon conveyed
“Where there is no vision, the people perish”
(Prov 29:18a). Having clarity about the financial
objectives before us is important. For example, let’s
say we want to build a $3,000 emergency savings fund
this year to escape the pressure of surviving
paycheck-to-paycheck. So let’s be intentional by
establishing monthly benchmarks to reflect on. For
this amount, $250 each month would cause us to reach
this goal. Or if we are paid biweekly, we could instead
save roughly $115 per check to reach that goal.
Do you already have savings and need a different goal?
How about getting freedom from that car note and
making those interest payments work for you instead
of for your bank or car dealer? Or how about setting
your own personal record for giving? Regardless of
your resolutions for 2020, I certainly pray that at least
one of them is a written, specific, and measureable goal
that we can thank GOD for helping you achieve as we
reflect come December 2020.
Another simple tip is to make sure our goals are
specific and measurable. A goal that is neither of these
Kids & Family
Sometimes, the hardest three words for a child to say are “I need help.” But even if the feeling of hopelessness tries
to enter in, the Bible already informed us of the words of Jesus in 2 Corinthians 12:9, “My grace is sufficient for thee:
for my strength is made perfect in weakness.” This is true for all of God’s precious children! TGM proudly presents
our tutoring mini-series with one of the most compassionate tutors in the Las Vegas valley, Miss V. Michaela Webb.
She assists children of all ages, in a variety of subjects with a Christian approach, and is happy to share her findings
with you!
How To Tutor Tips: Professional Perspective
• PRAYER is critical! Starting off a tutoring session with
prayer is necessary for both the student and the tutor.
It gives the student the confidence to know that though
they might not understand all their work yet; they will
soon because God has heard their prayer and will give
them the strength and ability to do it with His help. It
gives the tutor wisdom, God-given wisdom, on how to
carry out the session and discern where some of the
issues lie when it comes to the student and their ability to
process the work.
• PATIENCE is key! For some children concepts do not
click as fast, if it did they would not be coming to a tutor
for help. So, one has to remember to be patient. The
student will eventually get it, it just might take some
explaining and going over the problems more times than
what was previously thought.
• POSITIVITY does wonders! If one is not positive from
the beginning a tutor can easily lose a child. Needing a
tutor is often looked at as embarrassing, because it means
the student doesn’t understand, can’t keep up with the
other students, or needs to work on certain skills. This
meaning that the student is already in a fragile state, and
approaching them with a positive “You can do it” attitude
makes all the difference.
• PLANNING will save! Save time. Save energy. Save you.
Having a plan, even if it is a small one, will go a long way.
With a plan the tutor can be more organized, the tutoring
session will be more efficient, and the tutor can provide
what all students need which is structure.
Tune in next month for our “How To Guide" from a
Parent’s Perspective!
• PRACTICE makes perfect! This is not only for the
student but the tutor as well. You have to be knowledgeable
and up-to-date on the concepts you are tutoring a
student in. You never want to confuse a child more than
they already are. This means always staying on your
A-game, and you can do that by constantly and
consistently practicing the concepts you tutor.
SPRINGTIME
MAINTENANCE
Written by Terry Artis
The first day of spring is March 19th and it is time to get out your annual springtime checklist now.
Is your house ready to shake off the chill of winter 2019? Take it from a veteran maintenance man;
complete the following list and your family will be ready for spring 2020 in no time!
Check outside faucets:
Inspect hose faucets for freeze damage by turning on the water and placing a finger over the
opening. If that stops the water flow, the pipe may be damaged.
Open the windows:
With the welcoming warmth of fresh spring breeze, you might be inclined to do this regardless.
Opening the windows is also an effective way to naturally aerate your home and may improve air
quality. Take this opportunity to wipe down the interior of the windowsills as they have most likely
collected dust, dirt and mold over the winter months.
Inspect the air conditioning unit:
Remove debris from around the cooling unit and change the filters. To help your unit run properly in
the upcoming months, follow these steps to make your system more efficient.
Run the sprinklers:
Turn your sprinklers on to check if the system is still working properly. Look for leaks or broken
sprinkler heads. Adjust them so they spray the grass or bushes rather than the house.
Inspect windows and doors:
Check for cracks or holes and repair as necessary. Use a screen repair kit to fix holes or tears that
bugs can sneak through.
Spruce up landscaping:
Clean your landscaping of debris and trim overgrowth.
“By much slothfulness the building decayeth; and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through.”
Ecclesiastes 10:18
Grabbing a Hold of “HOPE”(Part 2)
Written by Rosheka Cabell
”Live and not die,” were the words last spoken over Julia, before being involved in a tragic
accident that tried to claim her life. Doctors said she would never walk again. Through anger and
tears, Julia wondered if their words were true. Let’s find out the conclusion of the matter…
Her baby sister looked at her and said, “We can still play... right, Jules? Right, Jules?”
Julia’s mother looked at Hope and said, “Baby, just like your name, Julia has to hope that she will
walk again, and trust God. If she supplies the faith, God will do the rest.”
Almost a year had passed and Julia was sitting in her wheelchair playing catch with her baby
sister. She had finally accepted the condition she was in, and the fact that God loved her enough
to spare her life. Julia had no choice but to accept the Lord into her life. She had never known
love like this before, and it was the most wonderful thing she had ever experienced. She believed
that one day she would walk again; but it would be in God’s timing. As she tossed the ball to her
little sister, she was the happiest she had ever been.
Hope did not catch the last toss her sister had
thrown and the ball rolled out into the middle
of the street. Before she knew it, Julia saw her
little sister go after it. She screamed “Hope!”
as she saw a car that was raring down the
residential area and quickly approaching.
Instantly, she lifted herself from her
wheelchair, and with all her strength set
her feet on the ground and started to run
towards her little sister. She reached out
grabbed a hold of Hope’s arm and pulled
her toward her as the two tumbled backwards
together and rolled out of the way of the vehicle.
Hope screamed, “Julia! You can walk! You can walk!” She
began to cry as she planted tiny kisses all over her sister’s
face. Julia could do nothing but weep as she looked up to
heaven and glorified God. She began to smile and said to
herself, “When you grab hold onto Hope (peering into her sister’s
eyes), anything can happen. Anything.”
CAN
YOU ?
Written by Jordan Reynolds
February is recognized as American Heart Month and TGM wants to celebrate by sharing
a matter close to the heart. Stop the Bleed® is a national awareness campaign that trains
individuals how to control and stop life-threatening bleeding. So while many people tend
to think “there is no way I can help in an emergency situation,” Stop the Bleed® aims to
show the common man that if you are willing, you CAN save a life. Leslie Shaffer, CCTP, is
a lead instructor for the Las Vegas valley campaign. She is a highly qualified nurse with a
background in critical care paramedics, tactics combat and casualty care; an instructor for
American Medical Response (AMR); and desires to be a physician’s assistant.
How did Stop the Bleed® begin?
LS: It began in 2012 as a result of the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting. It arrived
here in Las Vegas with the help of AMR and Medic West in 2018.
Why is this class so important?
LS: Twenty-six people died that day in Sandy Hook, not including the shooter, and 20
were kids. When the morgue received those 20 bodies, they discovered 80 percent
had potentially survivable injuries. If someone had simply applied direct pressure, if
someone had tied a tourniquet, some of those kids would be alive today. Unfortunately,
teachers did not have this training.
Medical responders on average here in Las Vegas take up to seven to 10 minutes to get
to a call. When a patient can bleed out in three minutes, time is of the essence. We saw
this with the October 1 shooting on the Strip, and now need to train everyone so they
know how to react in a bleeding emergency if they have to.
Can anyone sign up for the course?
LS: Of course! Anyone can benefit from this free program. It’s simple and fun! It is also a
great way to add life skills to your toolbox of life. You even leave with a free certificate
and it counts for two Trauma hours for ongoing education. For more info, contact me at
TGM Reader
We Want to Hear from You!
Written by Arne M. Butler
If you would like to know what’s new and happening in the world around you, read The Gathering
Magazine: Everything Pertaining to Life and Godliness! Here are a few TGM supporters getting
the word out by sharing some of their favorite articles they have been reading from the October-
November 2019 issue.
JANET ARTIS - “Desk of Bishop: This Is What I Would Do if I Were You”
I concur that this article from Prophet/Bishop Owens speaks the truth in that those are the 10
words we love to hear in giving our wisdom or advice. But why not try the best advice giver
who is our Lord and Savior. Through seeking Him and reading His Word you can find every
answer to your questions if you want to hear the real answers to L-I-F-E.
KA’MYA PARKS - “ELC: Certain Women Must Also Minister for Christ”
Elect Lady Owen’s article inspired me as a young person to not count me out to be a blessing
to my Bishop and First Lady. I’m young, and fall into the category of "certain" that God can
use a woman to do great things in His Kingdom. I see greatness in my First Lady every time
she goes forth. So just as God used men to do great things, Jesus put his stamp on women to
do great things as well because he speaks about it in His Word.
KEESHA WILSON - “Resume Building with the HR Pros”
The article written by Nelda Fuller and Evangelina Gilbert in the October-November issue was
a very informative, especially for those who are seeking employment or career advancement.
It was an eye-opener on how developing a resume has changed. From what content should
be included, to the items that are now being omitted. It truly shows that the small details
matter to employers.
Thanks to all of our readers of The Gathering Magazine: Everything Pertaining to Life and
Godliness articles and hope that you are informed, inspired and ultimately looking forward to
the next edition of Pertaining to Life and Godliness. If you would like to continue or start your
