Homecare
ADVERTISING FEATURE
There is a lot about adult care in
the news, and we know that it can
be a really rewarding career so we
had a chat to Hugh Bernard who
works with the great team at New
Forest Homecare, who have been
helping people remain independent
in their own homes since 2004.
Older people may not be as physically active as they were,
and when they also lose perhaps a little of the clarity of mind
they once had, how do you ensure that your clients stay well
and in contact with their surroundings?
We have really good support from our managers, who make
sure that we have a background of our client’s interests and
lifestyle before we ever make a visit. This means that we already
know what topics may interest them and how we can really
build a rapport get to know them better. Our team encourages
independence and the care plans that are created reflect this.
You obviously build up meaningful relationships with your
clients, can you share with us a really rewarding moment?
One of my most rewarding moments has got to be when a client
who had often refused personal care allowed me to assist after
I had really got to know them. We had built up a good rapport
and they felt comfortable enough to accept assistance from me,
which was a real breakthrough.
And finally, can you sum up for us what, in your opinion, is
the best aspect of a job in the care sector?
This is really good experience for me as I am completing a
degree in the health sector. It’s ideal having a job where I can
broaden my knowledge and gain some hands-on experience.
The best aspect of a job in the care sector is most definitely the
buzz you get when you leave a client and you know that all is
well. You know they have everything they need and that you’ve
helped them have a good start or end to the day.
