Vision Statement

Addressing the lifelong leisure needs of all Vernon Hills residents.

Dear Vernon Hills Residents,

Soon warmer weather will welcome you and your family back to our parks and playgrounds. In just a few months,

kids will be having fun at summer camps and riding the slides at the Family Aquatic Center.

Mission Statement

To promote diverse community based recreational

opportunities by providing a variety of programs,

services, facilities, and natural spaces to

enhance the quality of life for

our residents.

Family Aquatic Center (FAC) season passes are on sale now! Purchase your pass before April 30 and save 10%. This summer, FAC season pass holders

have the opportunity to purchase a 15-punch pass to Lakeview Fitness at a discounted rate. Be sure to pick-up an FAC Summer Guide this spring at any Park

District facility! This publication is filled with activities and special events happening at your neighborhood pool all summer long!

Your Park District is full of fun this spring and summer! We have 20 special events scheduled in addition to our GO Vernon Hills walking program’s five group walks. Lakeview Fitness is

also offering a spring personal training special and a summer membership for students and educators. Are you a gardener, but need more yard space? The lottery for a garden plot in

one of our three community gardens is held March 3-31. The Farmers Market is back this summer on Thursday afternoons, June 11 through September 24 in Century Park.

Did you know the Park District offers numerous drop-in programs? There is no need to register – just drop-in, pay a nominal fee, and play! Basketball, pickleball, table tennis,

shuffleboard, volleyball, and many swim programs are offered.

Early this spring, our existing Skate Park will be removed and a new state-of-the-art skate park will be constructed just north of the original site near the Sullivan Community Center.

View page 6 for a rendering of the new park. The Skate Park is a collaboration between the Park District, Village of Vernon Hills, and Hawthorn School District 73.

I’m proud to announce that Vernon Hills Park District was awarded the 2019 Exceptional Workplace Award by the Illinois Park and Recreation Association’s Health and Wellness

Committee. This award recognizes the District for providing great opportunities and support for our staff in the name of Health and Wellness.

Have fun this summer and be sure to take time to enjoy your parks.

who set policy for the operation of the Park District. Park

Board meetings are held on the fourth Thursday of each

month at 6:30 pm at the Sullivan Community Center,

635 N. Aspen Drive, unless otherwise posted. Please call

or visit us online at www.vhparkdistrict.org to confirm

the dates or times. Meetings are open to the public and

residents are invited to share comments or suggestions

during the appropriate time as listed on the agenda.

Illinois Distinguished Accredited Agency 2018-2023

Vernon Hills Park District is recognized as an Illinois Distinguished

Accredited Agency 2018-2023 by the Illinois Association of Park

Districts and the Illinois Park and Recreation Association. The

two statewide associations administer the Illinois Distinguished

Accreditation program with the goal of improving the delivery of

park and recreation services to Illinois residents. It is a voluntary,

comprehensive evaluation process to demonstrate that agencies

have met state guidelines to provide exceptional services to their

community. Only 15% of Park Districts receive this accreditation.

2019 Gold Medal Award Finalist

Vernon Hills Park District is proud to be a finalist

for the 2019 National Gold Medal Awards for

Excellence in Park and Recreation Management.

Clothing and Textiles Recycling

SWALCO has established a new community-wide

program where clothing and textiles can be collected

for recycling. The program will accept new, gently used,

used or unwanted/worn, women’s, men’s and children’s

clothing and textiles. All fabrics will be accepted. Almost

the urgent need for corrective lenses and collect usable

glasses in their communities. The collection box is

located in the Family Aquatic Center circle drive. It

resembles a mailbox.

Vernon Township Food Pantry

the Sullivan Community Center. Accepted items include

non-perishable goods, cleaning supplies, and personal

hygiene products.

Winter Season Toys for Tots

Help millions of less fortunate children share in the

magic of the holidays. Local Toys for Tots Campaigns are

the heart and soul of the Marine Toys for Tots Program

managed by dedicated United States Marines and local

volunteers. Collection boxes are located at the Sullivan

Community Center and Lakeview Fitness during the

holiday season. New, unwrapped toys can be dropped

off until mid-December.

SWALCO Reuse-A-Shoe

Donate shoes of all types*, sizes, and conditions. Of all

the materials collected, 95% or more will be recycled

or reused, and you can be a part of this great effort!

The collection box is located in the Sullivan Community

Center.

*Rollerblades, ice skates, and winter boots cannot be

accepted.

Sports Shed

The Sports Shed makes it possible for kids to have

positive alternatives to gangs, violence, and drugs

through organized sports. Donate new or used gear

including equipment, apparel/uniforms, or athletic

footwear. The collection box is located in the Sullivan

Community Center.

The Vernon Hills Park District is a cooperative member agency of the Special Recreation Association of

Central Lake County. SRACLC provides community based therapeutic recreation programs and services to

people of all ages with disabilities or special needs.

SRACLC is a cooperative effort of the Grayslake, Vernon Hills, and Mundelein Park Districts and the Villages

the Member Agencies are considered “residents” of SRACLC and may utilize the services.

SRACLC offers more than 500 weekly programs, special events, and camps during the year. SRACLC also

own Park District or Recreation Department. SRACLC can help you with this opportunity by providing an

extra staff, if deemed necessary, behavior management support, disability awareness training, and other

adaptive services necessary for safe and successful participation.

Contact the SRACLC office (847) 816-4866 if you would like to receive a brochure or would like

The goal of the Park District’s swim program is to create a life-long interest in aquatics

activities, promote a healthy lifestyle, and improve a child’s safety in the water.

Lessons follow the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim guidelines. Taught by instructors

who are certified lifeguards, our lessons feature progressive swimming instruction and

practice of water safety skills. Upon successful completion of each level, swimmers will

receive an American Red Cross certificate.

Select the Right Class

Before Class

Review the skill lists on vhparkdistrict.org. Choose the first class that lists a skill

that your child has not yet mastered.

First Day of Class

Your child's skills will be assessed on the first day of class to ensure that they

are placed in the proper level. Adjustments will be made if necessary. Swimming

requires motor coordination and practice to become proficient.

Keep in Mind

It is not uncommon to spend more than one session in a particular level. This

is especially true with levels 2, 3 and 4. Therefore, do not expect your child to

automatically advance to the next level at the end of a session.

Questions

If you are unsure about your child’s abilities or have questions about the

different courses or swim class policies, contact Robert Wood, Aquatic

Supervisor, at (847) 996-3488.

and outdoor play, weather permitting. Cari Herman

Science and math all in one class. The curriculum will

alternate between science concepts and Kindergarten

readiness math skills. We will also have large motor

play in the gym or on the playground. Bonnie Imburgia

"I am so grateful to the teachers at Little Learners. My son had never been away from me until he

started this program. We enrolled him along with the enrichment program and couldn’t be happier. He has learned so

much, become more confident, learned to make friends and most importantly is excited about school every day that

he goes. The communication from the teachers about what they have learned daily is thorough and the pictures we

receive of the kids doing their activities is a bonus. We absolutely love both of the programs." – Naz

Lacrosse

The Illinois Girls Lacrosse Association is adopting the US Lacrosse “Players first”

Athlete Development Model: The Right Lacrosse at the Right Time. Providing every

athlete the opportunity to enter, enjoy and excel by learning and playing lacrosse in

a way that’s best for each stage of growth and development. This creates a model

of participation that provides opportunity for all, for life. Rationale for Small-Sided

Competition: Smaller players, smaller fields. That’s the name of the

game if we want to keep kids engaged, developing their skills

and getting more touches on the ball. We’ll see better skill

development, more enjoyment, and increased retention rates

by letting the kids play the right way.

about Park District happenings. Contact Cheryl Buhmann at (847) 996-6933 or

cherylb@vhparkdistrict.org.

Americans With Disabilities

The Vernon Hills Park District will comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA),

which prohibits discrimination in the provision of programs, services, or activities to

individuals with disabilities. We invite any participant with a special need to contact

our staff or our SRA staff, upon registration, so that a smooth inclusion can occur. If you

have any questions regarding the Park District’s ADA policy, or believe you have been

unfairly discriminated against in the provision of programs, services, or activities of the

Vernon Hills Park District, please contact the District ADA Compliance Officer, Tom Ritter

by mail at 635 N. Aspen Drive, Vernon Hills, IL 60061 or by telephone at 847-996-6802.

For the deaf or hearing-impaired, call the Illinois Relay Center voice only operator at

(800) 526-0857.

Food Allergy Policy

The Park District will attempt to accommodate each program participant who has a

food allergy in order to provide the safest learning environment possible. A Food Allergy

Action Plan will be created by the District staff and parents and will identify operational

practices for parents, teachers, and children to follow. For a copy of the Food Allergy

Policy, contact Tom Ritter, Superintendent of Recreation, at (847) 996-6802.

No Smoking Policy

In addition to the Smoke Free Illinois Act, the entire Park District which includes all

facilities, buildings, parks, streets, paths, open space and all waters, is designated as

tobacco free.

Age Qualification

The District establishes appropriate age qualifications for each of its programs.

Only the program supervisor is authorized to make exceptions to these age ranges.

Consideration will only be given once all age-appropriate participants have had an

opportunity to register.

Payment Policy

Households with an unpaid balance will not be allowed to register for any Vernon Hills

Park District programs, activities, memberships, or rentals until the balance is paid in

full. For assistance with an unpaid balance contact the Business Operations Manager at

(847) 996-6803.

Resident/Non-Resident (NR) Fees

Vernon Hills residents significantly contribute to the operating budget of the Park

District by paying property taxes. Everyone who resides within the boundaries of the

Park District are eligible to receive resident discounted rates. Once per year, each

Vernon Hills household is required to show proof of residency in order to qualify for

resident rates. Families living within Hawthorn School District #73 are also eligible

to receive resident discounted rates for programs, Lakeview Fitness memberships,

and Lakeview Fitness daily passes. The only exceptions are facility rentals and daily

admission to the Family Aquatic Center. In addition, District 73 residents must wait until

the non-resident registration dates to register for programs. Non-resident fees are the

second fees shown in program descriptions. These rates are not discounted and are

necessary in order to ensure that non-resident participants contribute to the overall

financing of the park system on an equitable basis with residents.

Senior Citizen Discount

Senior discounts are available for individual passes and membership to our Fitness

Center for residents aged 62 & older. For all other programs and the Family Aquatic

Center, a 20% discount will be applied.

Non-Sufficient Funds (NSF) Policy

A $25 service charge will be assessed on all checks returned due to non-sufficient

funds.

Photo & Video Policy

The District occasionally takes photographs or video of participants for promoting/

advertising our programs, services, events, activities, and facilities in our brochures,

website or agency social media, and other promotional avenues. By registering

for, participating in or attending District programs, events, or other activities, the

participant (or parent/guardian of a minor participant) irrevocably agrees to the use

and distribution by the Park District of his or her image (or of his minor child/ward)

in photographs, video recordings, and any other electronic reproductions of such

programs, events and activities for any purpose without inspection or approval and

without compensation, rights to royalties or any other consideration now and in the

future.

Residents are encouraged to submit photos for the Park District to use in its

informational materials. To submit a photo, email Cassidy Reinhard, Marketing

Specialist, at cassidyr@vhparkdistrict.org.

Vandalism

Each year, vandalism costs the Park District thousands of dollars. Higher costs of

maintenance, repair and clean up of park areas can be avoided only with your help.

Should you see vandalism occurring, please call the Vernon Hills Police at (847) 362-

4449.

Discipline

A positive approach is used regarding discipline. Staff periodically reviews rules with

participants during programs. If inappropriate or unacceptable behavior occurs, prompt

resolution will be sought and the District Behavior Management Policy (2.39) will be

used as a guideline. The Park District reserves the right to remove a participant whose

actions endanger the safety of himself or others.

Notary Public Services

Notary public services are available at the Sullivan Community Center. Please

remember that documents must be signed in the presence of the Notary Public.
