10 Tips for new teachers Teaching is a noble profession and a very important one too as teachers shape the citizens of tomorrow. A new teacher might wonder how to do the right things. Here are a few tips for new teachers to increase effectiveness: by Varsha Verma 1 Plan for the year While it is good to make short-term plans, a long-term plan is necessary to keep you on the track. So, plan for the year in advance, and assess it at frequent intervals. 2 Adapt your teaching methodologies It is important to change your methodologies as per your students’ needs. See what works for your students – independent learning, group learning, teaching aids, etc. 3 Be open to ideas and insight Educators or practicing teachers are the best people to take advice as they have spent their time teaching students. So, listen to their experiences and tactics, you might get some sound advice. 4 Disciplining students is important Never tolerate bad behaviour in classroom. Address it as and when it happens. 5 Use positive reinforcement Encourage good behaviour with positive reinforcement. This will motivate your students to do better. 6 Think positive Always look at the bright side of things. Be positive even in difficult situations. Your students will perform better when they learn in a positive environment from a positive teacher. 7 Make learning fun Children learn better when they are in a happy environment. Make your teaching process interactive and engaging. 8 Remember your student’s names It is always good to remember the names of students. Students feel connected to their teachers if teachers remember them. This is the first step in your bond with them. 9 Update yourself regularly Like all professions, teachers also need to be updated and upgraded regularly. Check out for teacher training programmes and adopt best practices across the world. 10 Be a role model Children look upto their teachers. Be a role model.
