He wrestled at the individual state tournament this past weekend at 113 pounds. After getting third at 106 pounds in Class 3A last season, you were back at state for another appearance this past weekend. What was that like? It’s good. But a lot of people make their emphasis on being back at state. But I don’t look at [being back there] as a milestone. I look at placing at state to be the total accomplishment. You moved up from 106 to 113 pounds this season. Was that a big difference? There’s not too much difference to me. Strengthwise, most of the guys are the same. But since I’m 5-foot-10, I’m taller than most of the guys I wrestle. That’s got its advantages, such as I’m not easily able to be lifted off the ground. How did you get involved in wrestling? My older brother, Jordan, wrestled, and I wanted to follow in his footsteps. He wrestled at Oswego, and I wrestled at Montini my freshman year before we moved to Crest Hill. Did you play any other sports? I played football as a cornerback my sophomore year. But honestly, I quit after a couple of weeks. I was smaller and didn’t think I fit the sport. What is it about wrestling that makes it the sport for you? I like winning, and I’m good at it. I like that it’s a combat sport. It’s physical. You can take apart your opponent and assert your dominance over them. What have you learned from Lockport wrestling coach Josh Oster? I’ve learned discipline is a big thing. Also, to be always thinking and always staying composed on the mat. And to just breathe. If you could be any superhero, who would it be and why? The Flash. Because he’s quick and has always been my favorite. He has a good personality, a good story. My second choice would 22nd Century Media File Photo be Superman. I always liked his name, Kal-El. If you could travel anywhere, where would it be and why? Africa or South America. Africa, because I always thought the continent looked like a lion. South America, because I like Brazil, and I always wanted to travel there and try the food. Do you plan on doing wrestling in college? Yes, I hope to. But I’m waiting until after state to get serious about looking at schools. What is the best thing about being an athlete at Lockport? There’s a lot of history at the school, especially with the wrestling program. So, I think being a wrestler, you get a little more respect. There’s also a great community feeling at the school. homerhorizondaily.com sports the homer horizon | February 27, 2020 | 35 Boys Swimming and Diving Porters wrap up season by taking fourth out of 12 teams at sectional Randy Whalen Freelance Reporter In a couple of years, the Lockport Township boys swimming team has the potential to be dominant. In the meantime, the Porters had to go through some growing pains this season. With more than half of their postseason roster freshmen, they placed fourth on Saturday, Feb. 22, in the Sandburg Sectional at the Jane Caliendo Aquatic Center. Stagg (233.50 points) captured its first sectional title since winning back-to-back ones in 2014-2015. Sandburg (214) was second, while Lemont (197) and Lockport (184) rounded out the Top 4. Joliet Central (147), Brother Rice (133), Evergreen Park (76.5), Richards (50), Eisenhower (44), Shepard (30), Agricultural Science (29) and Julian (21) rounded out the field. But Lockport had no one advance to the State Finals, which will be held this Friday, Feb. 28, and Saturday, Feb. 29, at Evanston Township High School. “We had a new team this year, and the young guys really stepped it up,” Lockport coach Jason Ozbolt said. “The young guys had a lot of experience and lessons learned. Stagg really went for it, and it paid off with a lot of things going their way. But a majority of our guys were freshmen, and they got a good taste of it today.” While Lockport did not advance anyone to the state finals, it did have a few third-place finishers. One of those was in the 200-yard freestyle relay. There, senior Casper Harmata, junior Thomas Abramite, freshman Julian Moreno and senior Augusto Ureta came in with a third-place time of 1:30.57. In the other relays, it was freshman Ryan O’Connor and Abramite, along with freshmen Matthew Johnson and Michael Klimek, with a fourth-place time of 1:41.99 in the 200-yard medley relay. In the 400- yard freestyle relay, it was Johnson, O’Connor, freshman Michael Erickson and Ureta with a sixth-place time of 3:27.01. Individually, the Porters’ best performance was in the 100-yard backstroke. There, O’Connor (57.17 seconds) and Erickson (58.43) placed third and fourth. In the 100-yard butterfly, Johnson (55.01) placed third, and junior Zachary Dalton (59.89) was ninth. There was a trio of fifth-place finishes, as well. Erickson (5:01.28) was fifth, and Johnson (5:05.30) placed seventh in the 500-yard freestyle. Abramite (1:01.49) was fifth, and junior Rory Flanagan (1:06.25) placed ninth in the 100-yard breaststroke. Also, O’Connor (2:06.52) was fifth, and freshman Matthew Nielsen (2:29.48) took 15th in the 200-yard individual medley. Junior Maksymilian Pabian (1:52.67) was sixth, and sophomore Dominik Gasienica (1:58.94) took 10th in the 200-yard freestyle. In the sprint races, Ureta (22.95) placed seventh in the 50-yard freestyle and was eighth (50.69) in the 100-yard freestyle, while Harmata (23.60) was eighth in the 50, and Abramite (51.45) was ninth in the 100. In the diving competition, sophomore Evan Litynski, with a score of 289.1, was seventh. “The last two weeks we had some guys out sick, and they weren’t at 100 percent,” Ozbolt said. “But some of these guys, these freshmen, dug deep down, and it’s a great sign of things to come. Plus, we had two brand new divers this year. “Plus, it was a good meet for our only two seniors. Augusto Ureta had a great final meet. He walked away happy with himself and happy that he’s going to swim again [at Carroll University, a Division III school in Waukesha, Wisconsin]. Casper Harmata was our other senior, and he swam for only the past two years. He had a really great year.” With most of the team expected back, that is exactly what the Porters hope to have next year. This Week In... Junior post player Sydney Furr (7 points, 11 rebounds) had a layup with 27 seconds left in the third quarter to make it 41- 22 after three. She added three more points in a 6-0 spurt that opened the fourth quarter and gave Lockport one last glimmer of hope. Her final point was a free throw with 5:20 remaining that made the score 41-28, but the Porters did not score again. The Porters, who have had many free-throw issues this season, were 6-of-6 from the line in the game, all coming in the final 51.4 seconds. “I thought we had some good looks that just didn’t fall for us,” East coach Rich Kolimas said. “It just came down to Lockport getting a spurt at the end, and we weren’t able to convert at the end. “We need to pick it back up and get some momentum back here at the end.” A 3-pointer by Seputis from the left side at the buzzer gave East a 14-8 lead after the first quarter. This was special, and this program is just going to keep going up.” Pappageorge agreed that the season was a special one. “To finish the season with people that were not only good teammates but good friends was special,” she said. “It was a fun season. It stinks we lost, but we all put in the dedication and had a great season.” Two days earlier, on Feb. 18, Lockport had to rally in the back with an 8-1 spurt to open the second quarter, which featured a tie and five lead changes. Senior guard Jake Kaczmarek scored all nine of his points in the second quarter for the Porters. Those came on a trio of consecutive threes, which gave Lockport a 22-21 halftime lead. The Griffins opened the third quarter with a 6-0 burst. But two more ties and a another lead change happened in the final 2:47 of the quarter, and Lockport led 31-30 at the end of three. “We had huge rebounds by Tyrell Harris and Sam Trafton,” Hespell said. “We played really well, especially after the first quarter. Thornwood edged Crete-Monee (14-17) by the score of 59-57 in the opening semifinal. Although Lockport graduates the three seniors, the rest of the roster is expected to return next season. Plus, the Porters sophomore team went 23-3 this season. “I think we were all a little too excited, a little too anxious,” Sochacki said after the loss to Thornwood. “But, it was a really fun season. We all hung out outside of basketball and had fun. We set a high standard this season. If we keep working really hard, next year will be even better.” The Porters ended last week with a late-game addition at home on Saturday, Feb. 22, against Southland College Prep (7-19). Lockport won 65-41 to improve its record to 14-16. Deksnys scored 17 points to lead the way, and sophomore swing player Ethan Gallagher scored 14 points, as Lockport knocked down 14 3-pointers by eight different players, and eight sophomores stepped up to get varsity playing time after finishing their campaign at 21-8. The Porters are the No. 12 seed in their own sectional. They will face No. 5-seeded Neuqua Valley on March 4 in the second semifinal of the Lincoln-Way West Regional.
