The recently opened<br />
Cardiovascular Institute,<br />
led by cardiologist Thomas<br />
J. Quinn, MD, strives<br />
to help detect, treat and<br />
prevent cardiovascular<br />
disease.<br />
“The Palos Health Cardiovascular<br />
Institute was<br />
begun in order to expand<br />
cardiovascular services<br />
at Palos, from diagnostic<br />
and screening through the<br />
entire spectrum of therapeutic<br />
services,” Quinn<br />
explained. “In addition to<br />
acute care, Palos provides<br />
post-acute care services,<br />
including cardiac rehab.”<br />
Palos also offers less<br />
invasive alternatives to<br />
surgery, including TAVR,<br />
a less invasive aortic valve<br />
replacement and L<strong>AA</strong>C<br />
implants for atrial fibrillation,<br />
allowing certain<br />
patients to come off blood<br />
thinners.<br />
“When it comes to cardiac<br />
care, access is key,<br />
and receiving care in a<br />
community setting makes<br />
it easier for physicians to<br />
develop a strong relationship<br />
with their patients,”<br />
Quinn said. “We get to<br />
know the patient and can<br />
develop a care plan tailored<br />
to their needs.”<br />
Patients should seek<br />
care from an experienced<br />
and integrated cardiac<br />
team that can guide<br />
them through appropriate<br />
screening and diagnostic<br />
studies. The ability<br />
to diagnose a cardiac<br />
problem and follow the<br />
patient through their posttreatment<br />
regimen is also<br />
crucial to a successful outcome.<br />
Quinn recommends<br />
everyone define their individual<br />
risk score for<br />
coronary artery disease<br />
(ASCVD) and ASCVDrelated<br />
events and suggests<br />
using an online app,<br />
such as the ASCVD Risk<br />
Estimator Plus.<br />
If one’s score is intermediate<br />
or high-risk, he<br />
suggests further noninvasive<br />
testing, such as calcium<br />
scoring, CT coronary<br />
angiography, ultrasound<br />
screening, stress testing<br />
and a full lipid blood test.<br />
These can help determine<br />
whether further lifestyle<br />
modifications and<br />
medications should be<br />
implemented to maintain<br />
good heart health.<br />
