Where the rocky headlands meet the sea, many secluded beaches have

These hidden treasures include: the charming Rocky Bay, a very private
oasis resting between rugged headlands; Radical Bay, the Island’s pride
and a yachties paradise; sparkling Balding Bay, a holiday maker’s haven;
Arthur and Florence Bay, abounding in colourful reef life; and the striking,
remote Five Beach Bay perfect for the boating and snorkelling enthusiast.
Not to be forgotten is the outstanding West Point; this hidden gem is

whilst taking in a superb sunset over the water.
Disappear for the day in a hidden paradise and be enchanted by the
gentle beauty of Mother Nature’s miracles. Take pleasure in the soothing
song of the ocean as you laze on the warm golden sand and cool off in
the clear blue water. Better yet escape, relax and discover on the deck of
a yacht with one of the quality charters available from the Island.
For a more social experience, Magnetic Island’s four residential bays
each feature stunning beaches that are all easily accessible and
suitable for the whole family. Picnic Bay Beach is the quieter option,
with its rustic charm and a jetty perfect for the keen fisherman.
Nelly Bay Beach is ideal for a casual afternoon stroll and provides
a glorious backdrop for Magnetic Harbour and the fabulous new
marina facility. Arcadia’s beach, Alma Bay is a favourite family
swimming spot and perfect for a day out with its lush green
parkland, picnic tables and playground. Horseshoe Bay is famous
for its array of restaurants, activities and must-see sunsets.
Each of the main beaches is in close proximity to a great range
of restaurants and hotels to ensure refreshments are never too
far away. Alternatively, pack a picnic or sizzle some sausages on
the inbuilt barbeques located on the foreshores of the Island’s
beautiful beaches.

bay guide
Horseshoe Bay is the largest bay on the Island. Jetskis, sea kayaks, catamarans,
paddle boats, and fishing charters are all available for hire. A patrolled swimming
enclosure, seasonal stinger nets, parkland, playground and picnic facilities lie directly in
front of a tourist strip of restaurants, shops, hotel and accommodation.
Alma Bay is a protected, deeper water haven making it a favourite swimming spot,
with Life Saving patrols on weekends and public holidays. Ideal for a full day out with
lush parkland, picnic tables, playgound, surf club and amenities. Refreshments, light
meals, newsagency and resort wear all available right across the road.
Nelly Bay is the Island’s ferry arrival point. As the main “village” you will find shops,
restaurants, fuel and a vast selection of accommodation. The beach itself is perfect for
a leisurely stroll, wind-surfing, catamarans, and snorkelling the fringing reef. The palm
studded park, playground, bbq and toilet facilities make it the perfect family picnic spot.
Picnic Bay’s historic jetty is now the perfect spot to cast a line or simply take a
stroll and enjoy the views across Cleveland Bay. Parklands, complete with bbqs and
playground, extend from the patrolled southerly end of the beach right along the mall.
A peaceful spot to enjoy refreshments from the beachfront hotel and cafes.
Rocky Bay is a secluded sun lover’s bay which can only be reached by a steep
walking track or by small boat. The name Rocky Bay came about because at high tide the
beach seems to disappear and the bay looks like it is just boulders. Good snorkelling can
be experienced from the northern end of the bay along the rocky edge.
jump right in
Geoffrey Bay is an easy access nature lovers paradise. A large stretch of fringing reef
extends the whole length of the bay, offering great snorkelling, and reef walks at low
tide. The Moltke Wreck just off the old barge ramp is a great dive spot, and at dusk the
wallabies come down to the carpark on Bremner Pt to feed. Zoned Marine Park B.
Arthur Bay is the first of the undeveloped National and Marine Park Bays accessed
from Radical Bay Road, and provides some of the best snorkelling on the Island. Free
standing coral reef and an abundance of colourful fish meander from the beach around
a small cove and past the headland at the Northern end of the Bay.
NP
Florence Bay is a diverse oasis with spectacular coral reef just metres offshore,
beautiful clear water, pristine beach and scenic boulders studded with Hoop Pines.
The bay is protected in most winds – although in seasonal Northerlies this calm bay
transforms to a favourite surfing spot. A popular boating anchorage for day trippers.
NP
Radical Bay & Balding Bay are paradise for those who wish to relax and
simply soak up the Island’s beauty. Swimming is excellent and the beaches are superb.
The perfect choice for a quiet picnic with the whole family and perhaps some cricket on
the beach. Balding Bay is reached by walking track or small boat only.
NP
West Point, as it’s name dictates, faces West towards the mainland giving you the
rare opportunity to enjoy the sun setting across water on the Eastern Coast of Australia.
A fabulous spot for fishing, a picnic at dusk, or to explore the flora and fauna of the
wetlands and mangroves. 4WD access only – tours available.

Scuba and Snorkelling
As a part of the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, Magnetic Island
has an impressive variety of dive sites and snorkelling opportunities to suit any level.
The fringing coral reefs and profuse marine life are easy and comfortable to explore in
the warm and moderately shallow waters. The beaches provide a simple entry point
for a relaxed offshore snorkel or dive.
Boat diving is just as straightforward with the various secluded bays providing ample
anchorage points. For the more intrepid diver the Island’s waters boast an extensive
array of shipwrecks begging to be explored.
A must see experience for the skilled and student diver while on Magnetic Island is a trip
to the famous “Yongala” wreck off Cape Bowling Green. Cited as the best wreck dive
site in Australia and one of the top five in the world, the site is 90 metres long and lies
in approximately 30 metres of water. Visit an important part of Australia’s history while
enjoying the incredible range of coral and marine life that inhabit the wreck.
Fishing
Famous for its fishing, North Queensland really is
an angler’s paradise. Magnetic Island only adds
to this sterling reputation. There are various spots
ideal for throwing in a line, including West Point,
Middle Reef, Orchard Rocks, Nobby Headland,
the Picnic Bay Jetty, Horseshoe Bay Beach and
many more.
Friendly locals will provide handy hints and
guide you to popular spots when you purchase
your fishing tackle and bait from various outlets
such as Magnetic Adventure & Hire. To make a
day of it, charter fishing trips are available with
professional skippers to provide valuable local
insight and ensure pleasing results. The inshore
waters, beaches and rocky points are home to
such species as mackerel, flathead, whiting and
bream as well as a wealth of other species ideal
for the sports fisherman. Be sure to keep up to
date with the Marine National Park green zones,
applicable to some of the bays around the Island.
A day on the water is a day worth having.
Swim, snorkel, fish and explore the many
wonders of Magnetic Island’s pristine bays.
Off the shores of Cockle, Picnic, Nelly, Geoffrey, Arthur and Florence Bays fringing
reefs of hard and soft corals support numerous small fish and invertebrates.
The waters surrounding Magnetic Island also nourish extensive Sea grass
meadows, essential as fish nurseries and providing habitat for the sea turtles and
dugongs. During the summer months, sea turtles nest on the Island’s beaches.
Magnetic Island is classified as an Inshore Fringing Reef, dominated by corals
which are adapted to the turbid water conditions found close to the coast.
Many of these reefs also have a substantial cover of the dark seaweed Sargassum.
The optimum areas of coral growth are found in the reef slopes where diverse
and fascinating ecosystems thrive. More than 150 species of fish inhabit the reefs
around Magnetic Island, awarding snorkellers the opportunity for an intimate
and exclusive reef encounter.

The lively local community on Magnetic Island hosts a great
range of regular events giving visitors the chance to soak up
the Island’s relaxed and friendly atmosphere all year round.
Island Community
Captain Cook first discovered this beautiful
piece of paradise in 1770. He believed the
Island possessed a magnetic force that caused
interference with his compass. Though Captain
Cook was later found to be wrong, the name
Magnetic Island remains and its mystical appeal
still resonates with travellers and residents alike.
So great is the allure of Magnetic Island, close
to 3000 people have chosen to fully immerse
themselves in the unique tropical lifestyle.
Because of this significant residential presence
there are an impressive variety of shops
available in all four residential bays to make
your tropical getaway as luxurious and stress
free as possible. These range from boutiques,
hair salons, coffee shops and art galleries,
right through to supermarkets, a chemist,
newsagent, bakery, hardware stores, bottle
shops, real estate agents and so much more.
Encounter the beauty of original and local

the opportunity to take home mementos of
your island getaway while meeting some
friendly locals.

One of the best ways to explore
Magnetic Island is on foot ...
W1 Hawkings Point track Grade: Easy 1.2km ret / 1hr
This is one of the easiest and shortest walks with an exceptional view. From
Picnic Bay, a track winds to the top of a large boulder, affording a spectacular
panorama over the island past Rocky Bay to Nelly and Geoffrey Bays and back
towards Townsville.
W2 Picnic Bay to West Point Grade: Easy
8km / 2.5hrs
This walk follows a bush track that links the bays on the western side of the
island. The track passes a tidal wetland, mangroves, paperbark swamps and
savanna grasslands. The flora and fauna are totally different in this area to the
eastern side of the Island, making the journey particularly rewarding.
W3 Nelly Bay to Arcadia Grade: Moderate 5km / 1.5hrs
Continuing along Mandalay Ave, Nelly Bay, this walk passes through a cool
patch of rainforest alongside Gustav Creek, then climbs gradually to the saddle
between Nelly and Horseshoe Bays. The track follows a ridge with views over
Horseshoe Bay before it branches, with one track leading on to Horseshoe Bay,
and the other down to Arcadia past the Sphinx lookout.
beautiful beaches
are just the beginning
W4 Arcadia to Horseshoe Bay Grade: Easy
4.6km / 1.5hr
Opened in 2011, this walking track replaces the old walkway adjacent to the
main road. The track begins at the end of Endeavour Rd, winding uphill to
the saddle between Nelly and Horseshoe Bay, passing through native grasses,
delicate wildflowers and an impressive stand of grass trees that are not seen
anywhere else in our walking track network. Continuing on past the Sphinx
lookout the track veers off to the right at the ‘Forts junction’ following the
ridge line before descending down to the Radical Bay and Forts walk car park.
W5 The Forts Walk Grade: Moderate 4km ret / 1.5hrs
From the turn-off to Radical Bay, this track ascends, sometimes steeply, to
follow a ridge behind the bays before arriving at the ruins of the Forts complex
operated during World War II. Lookouts afford excellent views to the Palm
Island Group in the north and Bowling Green Bay National Park in the south.
Magnetic Island’s WWII forts are listed on the Queensland Heritage Register
and are among the best examples of such forts on Queensland’s east coast.
This walk is also famous for spotting Koalas in their natural environment as it is
home to the largest free-roaming colony in the world.
W6 Arthur, Florence & Radical Bays * Grade: Easy 6km ret / 2hrs
From the Forts car park on the Horseshoe Bay Road, an easy track leads down
to these undeveloped bays which provide excellent swimming and snorkelling.
Arthur Bay walk – 1.4km return (30 minutes)
Florence Bay walk – 3.6km return (1 hour)
Radical Bay walk – 6km return (2 hours)
W7 Horseshoe to Balding and Radical Bays * Moderate 3.2km ret / 1hr
From the eastern end of Horseshoe Bay beach, the track climbs through a steep
gully of closed forest to a ridge with open eucalypt woodland. One branch of
the track leads down to the secluded Balding Bay and the other continues on
to Radical Bay. Both bays offer excellent swimming opportunities. An unsealed
road leads back from Radical Bay to the main road past Arthur & Florence Bays.
W8 Horseshoe Bay Lagoon Grade: Easy 200m ret / 15min
Leading off the main road near Horseshoe Bay beach, a short track leads to the
lagoon where a number of waterbirds can be seen over the wetlands. Walkers
can continue on past the lagoon along the back of Horseshoe Bay beach
through to the end of Swenson St.
See Maps on page 46
* Florence, Radical & Balding Bays are zoned Marine Park. No fishing or collecting permitted.

wildlife & walks
There is every opportunity to evoke your inner explorer while holidaying
on Magnetic Island. Discover the extensive 25km network of walking
trails which offer rare encounters and expansive views, and with such a
variety of walks to choose from, there is a track to suit all fitness levels.
Magnetic Island is typical of the dry tropics. Many visitors expect to see
rainforest but Magnetic Island, having considerably less rainfall than
the wet tropics slightly further north, is covered with open eucalypt
woodland of bloodwoods, stringy barks and grey ironbarks. Rainforest is
restricted to small pockets in sheltered gullies.
One of the Islands most popular walking trails is the Forts Walk.
The 2km track leads to a defence base built to protect Townsville during
World War II. This historical site comprises two gun emplacements, an
observation tower and a command post that boasts panoramic views
over the Island and Coral Sea. Look up along the trail and you’re bound
to spot a koala.
The Hawkings Point trail in Picnic Bay winds to the top of a large
boulder, showcasing views over the Island to Nelly and Geoffrey Bays
and back towards Townsville.
Between Nelly Bay and Arcadia a track passes through a rainforest
pocket, and climbs gradually to a high ridge through open forest with
outstanding views over Horseshoe Bay.
Take the West Point track that links the bays on the Western
side of the Island and you’ll pass a tidal wetland, mangroves,
paperbark swamps and savannah grasslands. Alternatively, an
easy stroll around Horseshoe Bay lagoon reveals an exciting array
of water birds.
There is also a selection of walking tracks leading to Arthur,
Florence, Radical and Balding Bays, that pass through steep gullies
of closed forest, and lead to open Eucalypt ridges with spectacular
views and exceptional swimming and snorkelling opportunities.
Two thirds of Magnetic Island is protected National Park so visitors
are granted the rare chance to see nature in all of its unspoiled
splendour. Breath in the crisp, clean air and marvel at the thriving
native vegetation. Millions of trees inhabit the Island’s landscape,
including strands of sweet smelling eucalypts that are home to
northern Australia’s largest colony of wild Koalas.
Relish the experience of encountering these beautiful creatures in
their natural environment. Many other remarkable species of wildlife
also inhabit Magnetic Island, including the graceful Rock Wallaby,
the shy echidna, the mischievous possum and over 180 species
of bird-life. Be swept away by the charming calls of the vibrant
Rainbow Lorikeets, minute Sunbirds and distinctive Curlews.
“Slow Down at Sunset... it’s their Island too”
It’s important to protect our wildlife by taking care on the roads, particularly at
dusk when our animals are on the move. Be diligent, slow down, help keep our
animals safe. For injured or orphaned wildlife please call the Veterinary Surgery
on 4778 5977 or Wildlife Care on 4758 1457 or 0400 243 842.

Climate
There are not many places in the world that can
almost guarantee you sunshine for your long
awaited holiday. However, with an average of
300 days of sunshine a year, Magnetic Island is as
close as they come. The pleasantly warm, sunny
days make it easy for holiday makers to get the
most of their island escape.
The weather is ideal for kicking back and enjoying
ice cold refreshments under a swaying coconut palm,
or lunging head on into any of the adventurous
outdoor activities on offer. The Island’s yearly average
maximum temperature is an agreeable 29°C and
the minimum, a comfortable 20°C. With only slight
maximum temperature variations throughout the
year, and glorious sea breezes, it really is beach
weather all year round.
Heritage
The outstanding beauty of Magnetic Island makes it an obvious destination for both
tourists and residents. The first man to recognise this potential was Harry Butler and his
family who came to Picnic Bay as European settlers in 1876. The Butlers built the first ever
guest house on the Island, a modest thatched cottage that is a far cry from the luxurious
accommodations on offer today. Twenty years later, Robert Hayles built the first ever
licensed Hotel and dance hall and started the first regular ferry service from Townsville.
The Hayles family proceeded to run two hotels and the ferry service for nearly 90 years.
In 1909 farming land became available at Horseshoe Bay. Large areas of pineapples and
fruit trees were planted resulting in Horseshoe Bay becoming the centre of a successful
pineapple industry.
By 1928 there were life saving clubs at Picnic Bay and Arcadia and groups of young
people began building huts on land they leased or purchased. Simultaneously families
from the mainland began to purchase their own houses for weekend and longer
holidays. In those days, Magnetic Island was predominately a holiday destination with
guesthouses popping up at Cockle, Nelly, Alma and Florence Bays and later at Horseshoe
Bay and West Point. With a history as colourful as the landscape itself it is no wonder

as its natural beauty.

Magnetic Island has everything you need to ensure your tropical escape
is unforgettable. The selection of tours on offer allows you to explore
every corner of the luscious landscape with the greatest of ease.
Land, sea or air – we’ve got you covered.

traditional, bus and taxi tours provide a great alternative with valuable
local insight. For something really unique enjoy the ocean views on
horseback, or from the air in a biplane. Embrace the culture of Magnetic
Island in the stylish art galleries and fabulous cabaret restaurant, enjoy a
spot of tennis, or play a round of golf in a natural oasis.
Once you’ve enjoyed the Island’s stunning landscape, set your sights on
the vast array of water activities on offer.
Go fishing with an experienced skipper and enjoy your own catch of the
day for dinner, float the day away on your chartered cruise, or embark on
a fast paced jet or water ski adventure. There are sailing catamarans for
hire, as well as sailboards, surf skis, paddleboards and aqua bikes.
The area surrounding Magnetic Island is part of the World Heritage listed
Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and plays host to a wonderful array of
tropical fish and colourful coral reefs. Take a guided reef or sea kayak
tour, learn to dive through the renowned dive courses available, or seize
the opportunity and hire your own diving or snorkelling equipment to
explore this amazing underwater world.
Explore Magnetic Island’s secluded bays and get up close and personal
with the incredible marine life of dolphins, turtles and sea eagles.

Did You Know? MAGNETIC JET have proudly been servicing the
tourism industry for 23 years. The first tour of it’s type in Australia, guide and proprietor Pete –
and some lucky tour participants – have witnessed some very memorable events on the waters
surrounding Magnetic Island. These include the birth of a humpback whale, a giant Manta Ray
trying to “steal” one of the anchored jet skis, and many sick and injured turtle rescues, the turtles
hitching a ride on Pete’s ski to the nearest beach for treatment by MINT volunteers. An eco friendly,
environmentally aware operation, Magnetic Jet Ski Tours monitor and report sea and wildlife
movements and injuries in an effort to help preserve Magnetic Islands’ marine wonderland.
