fashion and to accompanying you in your work and

sport, at home and out and about.

Dear Reader,

What we do, we do well. For half a century we have concentrated on the production

of highly durable tops. From high-quality T-shirts, polo shirts and sweatshirts in

many classic variations to exquisite blouses and shirts, innovative fleeces, easy-care

knitwear and versatile jackets. We are now turning our attention to trousers with the

same passion for textiles.

Last year we warmed up with our Chino trousers for men and women. Now we

are taking the next step with active pants. They make their debut on page 266 of this

catalogue. We’ll just say this: they are genuine all-rounders and not only suitable for

trade and industry. Their modern cut gives great freedom of movement and stands

out with many functional details. Even the material is responsive. It consists of a light

4-way stretch fabric which can be stretched in all directions and yet still holds its

shape even around the knees and pockets.

By the way, the new trousers are an example of real teamwork. The request for

gear from top to toe in HAKRO quality came from you, our customers and retail partners.

Thank you for this and many other suggestions. It is fun getting projects up and

Quality loves sustainability

Our products are carefully handcrafted

from high-quality materials which ensure

their above-average service life. Humanity,

respect and corporate responsibility have

been the basis for the quality of our collection

for 50 years. We intend to reinforce this

focus in the future in order to become one

of the most sustainable companies in our

sector.

Suppliers as partners

We know exactly where and how each

of our models is manufactured. For

decades we have collaborated with a small

circle of long-standing production partners

in Europe and Asia. We engage their

services throughout the whole year and

purchase monthly quantities which have

been agreed in advance. Reliability and

continuity ensure the high quality of our

collection and give our partners the planning

reliability to implement good working

and social conditions.

From the cotton field to the customer

Cotton is our most important resource.

24% of our models contain fibres from the

cotton plant. We have set ourselves the

target of gradually switching to cotton from

sustainable agriculture. Since 2017 we have

offered an organic collection from GOTS

certified organic cotton. At the same time

we are trying to increase the percentage of

sustainably produced cotton in our entire

collection by up to 50% by 2022. To achieve

this we are collaborating with Cotton made

in Africa, the most important and widely

accepted standard for sustainable cotton

from Africa.

Climate neutrality at our company

headquarters in Schrozberg

We want to keep our carbon footprint

along the entire supply chain as small as

possible. We have already gone climateneutral

at our headquarters in Schrozberg,

with our self-generated solar power and a

biogas cogeneration plant. We offset un -

avoidable emissions, company business

trips and staff travel via ClimatePartner.

In this way we are supporting the climate

protection project: Clean cooking stoves for

families in Bangladesh.

THE FEEL OF

Cotton fibres need to be at least 30mm

long – this makes our fabric surfaces particularly

smooth.

Buttons are made from unbreakable, extra

strong polyester. Totally colour-fast branded

thread is used for stitching and the zippers

come from YKK ® - smooth running, no getting

stuck or caught and no sharp edges.

That’s how it should be.

Interview with Axl Jansen

Sought-after fashion photographer

Axl Jansen staged for us the theme:

Colours against the everyday greyness.

He uses 15 models in 8 images to show

stages of a working day. Here he tells

us his current favourite colour and why

teamwork is essential for his work.

How did you get into your profession?

Through many coincidences and my love

of music. I was actually in the process of

becoming a musician, but my fellow musicians

convinced me that I am better at taking

photographs than I am at making music.

What fascinates you about your work?

I think that in my job you need to be able

to do completely different things which

don’t necessarily have anything to do with

the original job: you need to tell stories,

anticipate trends, lead teams, motivate

models, understand clients and at the

same time be able to take photographs.

What is your view of the world as an

artist?

It’s my secret mission to make every

day that bit more beautiful. I’m delighted

when I can steer people’s gaze towards

the unseen and move the viewer in some

way. Fashion photography can be highly

entertaining.

What makes a good team?

What does it stand for?

Good teams are well-coordinated and

react brilliantly to external circumstances.

As a fashion photographer you are in credibly

dependent on the team. When the right

people for make-up, hair and styling come

together on a photoshoot, then that’s half

the job done for me. There are often a dozen

people on the set, just to photograph a

single person. Team players are a fundamental

requirement for a good job.

For our photo shoot, it was the other way

around for a change: the team was the

subject.

Team building was needed even here. It

took about half a day until every one of the

15 models reacted to small cues and the

cooperation worked well. It was a bit like a

football team with me as the coach.

How did you chose the locations?

I wanted to photograph urban spaces in

order to portray the daily routine of a fictional

colourised group of people. The places

needed to be architecturally interesting

and tell the story of the image together

with the people. The grey background

was also important of course, in order to

accentuate the colourful worlds of HAKRO

perfectly.

Talking of colour, what is your favourite

colour?

Really you should ask what my favourite

colour is at the moment, as for me it changes

from season to season. Currently it is orange.

I’ve ignored this colour for a long time, but

now suddenly I’m almost in love with it.

Once everything meets your expectations,

we will work out what the cost of production

placing your order you will receive the first

production samples in original quality with

all processing details and finishes. Only

when you are happy with every detail,

however small, do we start production

under the stringent criteria of HAKRO‘s

quality management system. Including final

inspection before shipping.

modified standard product that is

UNITED NATIONS GLOBAL COMPACT

In 2009, HAKRO became a signatory of the United Nations Global Compact,

thus joining the world‘s largest alliance for responsible trading. The ten principles

of the Global Compact set standards for compliance with human rights

and the implementation of international labour principles, for environmental

protection, for taking action against child labour and for preventing corruption.

Each year we issue progress reports on the actions we have taken in

support of the ten principles.

TEXTILE PARTNERSHIP

As a member of the Partnership for Sustainable Textiles, HAKRO has committed

to take active steps to implement the Partnership‘s overriding goal:

to enhance the social, economic and environmental conditions along the

entire supply chain of the textile and clothing sector in a demonstrable way.

BUSINESS SOCIAL COMPLIANCE INITIATIVE

As a amfori BSCI member, since 2012 we‘ve been taking action to significant -

ly improve working and social conditions at our production facilities. We require

our suppliers to comply with the provisions of the BSCI Code of Conduct.

These set standards in terms of management practices, working hours and

pay levels, the banning of child labour, freedom of assembly, avoidance of

discrimination, and workplace health and safety. Independent inspectors

carry out local checks to ensure that our production partners are adhering to

the Code.

ACCORD

Bangladesh Accord established after the collapse of the Rana Plaza textiles

factory in 2013 with the aim of preventing such a tragedy from ever occurring

again. The agreement between trades unions and global textiles companies

ensures that fire prevention measures and safety standards are observed in

Bangladesh. We first supported this important measure by signing the first

Bangladesh Accord in 2015 and again by renewing the agreement in 2018.

STANDARD 100 BY OEKO-TEX®

The „Trust in Textiles“ symbol indicates compliance with STANDARD 100 by

OEKO-TEX ® . This is an independent testing and certification system covering

raw materials, secondary materials and end products at all stages of textile

processing. The tests involved cover substances that are banned or regulated

by law and those that are known to be damaging health. Every HAKRO

garment is labelled with this quality mark.

As part of the product certification process for STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX ® ,

we guarantee that all substances used fulfil the requirements of the European

chemicals regulation known as „REACH“ (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation

and Restriction of Chemicals).

GOTS

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the leading global standard

for processing textiles from organically produced natural fibres. It sets down

environmental requirements covering the entire textile production chain and

specifies compulsory social criteria. The T-shirts and polo shirts in the HAKRO

Organic Collection are made of 100% organic cotton and are certified in line

with the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).

COTTON MADE IN AFRICA (CMIA)

This initiative supports African cotton farmers and their families. Instead of

relying on donations, it involves the activation of market forces and therefore

plays a vital role in promoting self-reliance. HAKRO is a member of a network of

companies that purchase via the CmiA („Cotton made in Africa“) scheme, supporting

agrcultural training courses and social projects through licensing fees.

BLUESIGN® SYSTEMPARTNER

bluesign ® system is a holistic initiative of the textiles industry that aims to

promote sustainability along the entire supply chain. All participating companies

– from chemical suppliers to manufacturers to brands and retailers –

have to undergo strict testing. The aims are the economical use of resources,

minimisation of the environmental impact and the promotion of innovations.

We have been a bluesign ® system partner since 2009.

ISO 9001 – SYSTEMATIC QUALITY

HAKRO‘s quality management system has been certified as compliant with

the ISO 9001 standard by TÜV Süd in Germany. ISO 9001 is the most important

OUR COMPACT TEXTILE COMPENDIUM

Conveying comprehensive background

information on anything textile: our compact

HAKRO compendium explains many terms of

typical textile lingo in a concise and illustrative

manner. Yet, if there are still questions,

we will be glad to help.

BREATHABLE A fabric can be said to be

breathable when the material is capable

of wicking water vapour from the inside

to the outside. The breathability level is

specified by the garment’s MVTR (moisture

vapour transmission rate). This describes

the amount of water that can vaporise

through one square metre over the course

of 24 hours. The greater the amount, the

higher the breathability rating for the

garment.

“NON-IRON” LABELLING Shirts and

blouses with a “non-iron” label are easyto-care

for and can be worn straight after

being washed and dried. To assist with

this, you should take the garment out of

the drier when it’s still slightly damp and

allow it to dry off on a clothes airer.

COTTON The quality of a particular

variety of cotton depends mainly on the

fibre length. In the textile industry, this is

known as the “staple length”. The longer the

fibre, the finer and more hard-wearing

the cotton. HAKRO uses only long-staple,

combed and ring-spun cotton.

CLEVER CARE This is an initiative of the

International Association for Textile Care

Labelling (GINETEX) related to the topic of

washing, drying, ironing and professional

textile care.

COOLMAX ® PRO A high-tech functional

fabric belonging to the Invista brand that

optimally regulates body heat. Its special

4 or 6-channelled fibres wick moisture

directly to the surface of the material,

where it evaporates extremely quickly. For

maximum wearability, in our products we

use only the most effective variant, known

as COOLMAX ® PRO.

COTTON TEC is a double-faced material

in which the exterior is made of unusually

fine cotton and the interior consists of the

functional fibre TRIACTIVE ® . Because the

fabric rapidly wicks moisture to the outside

of the garment, it has a temperatureregulating

effect.

PRESHRUNK is a thermo-mechanical

textile treatment. It ensures that the

garment is slightly shrunk within specific

tolerances.

INTERLOCK This is a stretchable,

double-sized mesh fabric that only shows

the correct meshes on both sides of the

material.

JERSEY A fine mesh fabric for use in

outerwear in single or double grades.

BUTTONS HAKRO buttons are made

of break-resistant, 3 mm-thick highperformance

polyester. They are attached

for very long-term use by means of a

special lock-stick process.

VAT DYE A dye which exhibits essentially

no solubility in water. For this reason,

vat dyes always find application when

extremely high demands are made on

the dyeing process. Clothing dyed using

vat dyes is boil-proof, bleach-proof and

colour-fast.

LYCRA ® This high-quality variety of

elastane or Spandex, belonging to the

Invista brand, is extremely stretchable

and able to retain its shape.

MEMBRANES IN TEXTILES A membrane

is a special film that is firmly attached to

the reverse side of an outer fabric layer.

Membranes help ensure the garment is

comfortable and can contribute to the

breathability of functional clothing. They

provide protection from external moisture

while allowing gases in the form of water

vapour to escape. In comparison to fabric

coatings, membranes are robust, tearresistant

and consequently longer-lasting.

MULTI-LAYER LAMINATES All coats

and jackets that are equipped with a

membrane consist of at least two layers

of different materials. In 2-layer laminates,

the interior of the jacket is provided with

an additional lightweight lining, which prevents

direct contact with the membrane.

In 2.5-layer laminates, the membranes

are protected with an additional printed

coating. In 3-layer laminates, instead of the

printed coating, a further layer of fabric,

such as microfleece or mesh, is added

to the membrane. This third layer makes

the multi-layer laminate particularly

hard-wearing and makes the garment

very comfortable to wear. Multi-layer

laminates are 100% waterproof provided

that the seams are treated after assembly

with an additional tape seal. Without this

additional sealing process, multi-layer

laminates are merely water-resistant.

MERINO WOOL The Merino wool used

by HAKRO is especially fine, doesn’t

scratch, has a soft feel, an even mesh

pattern and offers high levels of comfort

for the wearer. It can be washed

at 30 °C.

MICROFLEECE This very thick velvety

material, made from 100% polyester, is

extremely lightweight, warming, windresistant,

elastic and wearable. Microfleece

garments from HAKRO are particularly

easy-to-care for and are also provided

with an additional anti-pilling facility.

MIKRALINAR ® This functional, skinfriendly

blend has been specially developed

for HAKRO to combine the benefits of cotton

with the strengths of a special high-performance

polyester. It is effective at absorbing

moisture and rapidly wicking it away

from the skin. Materials produced from

MikraLinar are particularly hard-wearing,

tear-resistant and good at retaining their

shape. Because of their high breathability,

they are also very comfortable.

PIMA COTTON This is an unusually

high-quality variety of cotton with long,

firm fibres. Garments made from Pima

cotton have a smoother surface, are

easy to handle and unusually soft.

PIQUÉ Is a fabric with alternately slightly

elevated and recessed points, thus conferring

a stitched appearance on the fabric.

Piqué is a classical material for polo shirts.

POLYESTER FABRICS are tear-resistant,

lightweight and absorb almost no moisture.

Moreover, they offer a well-balanced

ratio between insulation, moisture transport,

tear and abrasion resistance. This is

why they are presently the fabrics most

often used for functional and sportswear.

Since Polyester fibres are manufactured

sythetically, there is a large range of

various fibres to choose from for every

requirement on the product. The properties

demanded of the fabric differ widely

and impact on the function, the moisture

transport and the wearing comfort of the

garment.

PRO LABEL is a sign marking the suitability

of a product for professional textile

care. It contains instructions pertaining

to the standardised washing and drying

procedures as applied in commercial

laundries.

ZIPPERS HAKRO uses quality zippers

made by YKK ® which ensures that you may

open and close your zipper umpteen times

without breaking even one tooth.

RIPSTOP Extremely tear-resistant fabrics

that are woven using a special technique.

Thicker threads are interwoven with the

otherwise thinner material at regular

intervals. This makes the weave especially

stable and resistant to tearing.

SOFTSHELL involves the combination

of an external and middle layer of clothing

in a single product. Such garments have

a smooth outer layer, are windproof and

water-resistant. Inside, they have a soft

surface and are comfortable to wear.

Softshell coats and jackets are elastic and

ideally suited for use as

workwear thanks to the freedom of movement

they offer.

SOFTSHELL LIGHT is a breathable, hardwearing,

water-resistant and windproof

material consisting of a lightweight 2-layer

softshell reliant on TRIACTIVE ® PRO technology.

It’s suitable for use in all indoor and

outdoor activities.

STRETCH The addition of LYCRA ®

enhances the stretch qualities of fabrics,

thereby improving the freedom of movement

and the comfort of the garment.

KNITTED FABRIC apparel is, in comparison

to woven or tubular knitwear thicker,

heavier and better insulating. Making

meshes by means of one thread or yarn

and two or more needles yields an elastic

purl/knitwear.

SWEAT AND LINING FABRIC This is a

knitwear fabric with homogenous surface,

usually a tubular knit, with a soft lining

thread integrated in such a way that it

remains invisible thanks to a cover thread

on the outer side. The readymade fabric

displays evenly knitted meshes on the

outside while the inside can be strongly

brushed pile. The inside brushing of sweatware

may lead to fuzzing which, however,

will cease after several washings.

TEXTILE PERSONALISATION Customisation

of products, for example by

means of embroidery or printing, is known

as “personalisation”. Standard options

include the placing of a logo on the front

or rear of an item. HAKRO clothing is perfectly

designed for subsequent personalisation.

Thanks to their unusually smooth

finishes, they allow for excellent and longlasting

results.

TEXTILE WEIGHT The textile surface

weight is the weight in grams per square

metre of a fabric. It represents an

important indicator of product quality.

THINK GREEN – WASH AT 30 °C

Nowadays, washing at 30°C is perfectly

sufficient. Washes will still come out clean

as today’s detergents are effective even

at low temperatures. The bonus for the

environment is that washing at 30°C will

save up to 40% electricity. This is why

HAKRO has launched its “THINK GREEN –

WASH AT 30°C” campaign. We hope you

take part, too!

TRIACTIVE ® This high-quality functional

fabric helps wick moisture more quickly

to the outside thanks to the multi-channel

technology used in the special thread

design, making it ideal for activities involving

high levels of perspiration.

TRIACTIVE ® PRO refers to a waterproof

and windproof fabric that is permeable

to water vapour. HAKRO uses TRIACTIVE ®

PRO in all situations where the clothing

needs to offer very good levels of breathability,

permeability to water vapour and

waterproofing.

WASHING AND CARE INSTRUCTIONS

All HAKRO products are provided with

specially devised care guidelines. Please

pay careful attention to these.

WATER COLUMN This is the measurement

unit used for the density of fabrics.

The water column indicates how much

water can remain on the material before

it lets in moisture. A one-metre water

column corresponds to approximately

0.098 bar. Garments with a water column

of 1300mm or above may be considered as

waterproof.

WINDPROOFING Windproof clothing

is designed to prevent the wearer from

quickly losing heat as a result of the wind.

The higher the wind speed, the colder the

temperature experienced. This means that

an external temperature of –1° will feel like

–21° C in wind speeds of 40 miles per hour.

This “wind chill” effect can be countered

by wind-resistant clothing.

ZIP-IN SYSTEM The ZIP-IN SYSTEM

allows 3-in-1 coats and jackets to be combined

in line with the customer’s preferences.

For example, a light and warm loft

jacket may be combined with a breathable

and watertight active jacket. The coats and

jackets are available in a variety of colours

and can be worn either on their own or

together. Thanks to their versatility, they

are suitable for all kinds of uses all year

round.

YARN HAKRO uses only high-quality

yarns from reputable branded manufacturers.

To produce such yarns, threads

are refined. In other words, a minimum of

two or more threads are twisted together,

with the number of twists determining the

level of tear-resistance and therefore the

durability of the seams.
