Lisbon Tourist Attractions – Do They Live Up

to the Hype?

Wherever you are in the world, some of the recommended sightseeing spots fail to deliver

what you expect. So what of Lisbon tourist attractions, do they back up the recommendations

you’ll so often receive?

Well, you may think me biased, but 100% yes. This is one of the most amazing cities in the

world, and a large part of that is down to the fact that the sightseeing spots and tourist

attractions in Lisbon are as good as advertised, and even better in some cases.

-And here’s the thing, you may assume me to be slightly biased as I’ve chosen to make this city

my home, but it’s the other way around, the incredible sights and sounds this city has to offer is

part of why I came here, and every part of why I stayed.

Rising Popularity

There was a point in time when Lisbon was considered to be one of the best kept secrets in

Europe. While the city was known to be gorgeous, it seemed to be low down on most people’s

lists of places to go.

However, as word of mouth has done its thing, the popularity of Lisbon has flown up, and the

number of people visiting from around the world every year, and the people staying for a long

period, is going up and up.

While there are many reasons for this, Lisbon tourist attractions certainly have a lot to do with

it, there are many, many places in Lisbon that spark the urge to recommend to friends, and

when those friends visit, and realise that what they’ve been told is true, and that this city really

does have some of the most beautiful architecture, some of the richest history, and some of the

friendliest people in the world.

Belem Example

Let’s take one example, the Tower of Belem, one of the most recommended tourist attractions

in Lisbon.

The tower is stunning, over 500 years old, and with a very interesting backstory, but that isn’t

all Belem has to offer.

The walk from the train station at Belem to the tower will take you past the home of the Pastel

de Nata, the Jeronimos Monastery, which is older than the tower, and represents the affluence

of Portugal’s past, an incredible monument, and a riverside full of gorgeous cafes and

restaurants.

When you finally make it to the Tower, you’ll already have been spoilt by the beauty of Belem,

and then you get to take in the centrepiece.

That’s what Lisbon does, it gives you what you expect, and then it throws in extra treats for you

as well.

The Finest Tourist Attractions in Lisbon

If you want more evidence to show that Lisbon’s tourist attractions truly live up to the hype,

here’s just a small list of sightseeing spots and attractions that are guaranteed not to

disappoint.

Castle de Sao Jorge – Traditional Moorish castle, with incredible architecture, and stunning

views across the city.

Oceanario Lisboa – The biggest aquarium in Europe, and even that doesn’t give a sense of how

big this place actually is, truly incredible.

Jardim Zoologico – A wonderful zoo set in fantastic surroundings, take the cable car to get a

birds’ eye view of everything, and then take it all in from the ground.

Cristo Rei Statue – You can see it from all over the city, but it takes a little trip over the water to

Cacilhas to get there. Once you do though, this incredible structure needs to be seen to be

believed, as does the view across Lisbon that is arguably the greatest from any point in the city.

Botanical Gardens – Tropical plants, a surprisingly cheap entry fee, and a day spent in

immensely relaxing surroundings.

I could go on forever, and that’s exactly the point, if you want a visit you’re never going to

forget, and tourist attractions that more than live up to the hype, Lisbon is the place!
