Although more people are aware of mental health issues anddiagnoses, the majority still can’t tell when someone theylove is struggling with it. It’s no surprise as most people whohave a mental health illness don’t initially recognize that theyare struggling with it themselves. When they do come to it,a number of things can happen. What happens next weighsheavy on a person’s sex and cultural background.That’s why AriAnnah Edwards, founder of SisTreat in Little Rock,Arkansas, a non-profit created for women by women to removethe mental health stigma got started. She aims to create ahealing space for girls and women experiencing mental healthdisparities.AriAnnah has an up-close and personal connection with thismatter. Attributing the launch of her non-profit to witnessingthe difficult moments of her friends and family members whoare minorities and women.ARIANNAH EDWARDSFounder & CEOAs someone who has also expericed a mental health illness, shesaid, “ It’s not talked about enough. The resources aren’t there.The information isn’t there. The education isn’t there. It’s notas prevalent.” Whereas in other communities they don’t seemto be lacking anything. AriAnnah hopes to change that reality.“We [minorities] also have a different set of obstacles,” themajority of therapists are not from a minority group. Notingthat when someone has a mental illness, they progress betterand maybe even faster when they meet with someone wholooks like them and who is from their culture.Although they teach therapists how to be culturally aware, andthey train therapists on how to allow their clients to explaintheir culture to them, that might not be enough.
