MARY MCLEOD BETHUNE
Mary McLeod Bethune founded the Daytona
Normal and Industrial Institute for Negro Girls in
Daytona, Florida in 1904. The school was combined
with the Cookman Institute for Men in 1923. The
merged institution became known as the Bethune-
Cookman College. Bethune also became a Special
Advisor to president Franklin D. Roosevelt.

BOOKER T.
WASHINGTON
Booker T. Washington was an educator, author,
orator, and advisor to multiple presidents
of the United States. He began his career
as an educator as a teacher at his old grade
school in Malden, Virginia. He later became
an instructor at Hampton University. He was
Founder and first President of Tuskegee
Normal and Industrial Institute (now known as
Tuskegee University).
