MY MUSIC
DIARY
FOR TEACHERS AND STUDENTS
Practice Tracker • Lesson Assignments • Music Workbook
Welcome to My Music Diary
This workbook is a companion to music lessons. The pages are largely blank, giving teachers
and students space to study, create assignments, set goals, track practice and observe progress
throughout an academic year. It works well alongside any pedagogical method or curriculum, and is
open enough in design and layout so teachers can sequence concepts and organise assignments
according to their professional preference.
Students and their families enjoy the clear structure and the ability to track practice and observe
individual progress. It becomes a keepsake, recording musical achievements that students can look
back on year after year.
How to Use
This workbook supports music learning best when it is used at every music lesson and at every home
practice session. Students bring My Music Diary along to their lessons and together with their teacher
check practice time, create assignments and use it as a tool for study and research.
Pages 5 - 9: General Information
• Student and teacher information
• Annual goal setting
• 12 month blank calendar that can be personalised to start on any month (for example, if an
academic year starts in September the first box can be labelled as such.)
• Repertoire, Performance, and Composition Lists
Pages 10 - 21: Circle of Fifths and Study Pages
Page 10 is a blank Circle of Fifths that can be filled in as students study scales. It works well for
any level of scalic and harmony work; major, minor, and pentatonic scales, chord progressions,
key signatures, advanced harmony and composition etc. Pages 11 and 12 are useful for recording
fingerings, solfa, spellings, inversions etc. Pages 13 - 17 give exactly enough staves to create 15
grand staves to correspond to 15 key signatures (including enharmonic keys). Pages 18 - 21 are
large print manuscripts papers, useful for students learning landmark notes, basic reading and theory.
2
Pages 22 - 29: Music History Pages
These pages are blank which allows students and teachers to personalise music history studies. It
works well for students of all levels and ages, and can be modified for any specific historical research
or broad overviews of music history. For example:
• Pictures of composers or instruments can be glued or drawn in the different periods
• Student repertoire can be categorised according to period
• Time lines can be drawn across the double page layout of each period and used to record
historical events
• Students can use the pages to write short essays on each period or specific composers
Pages 30 - 75: Lesson Assignment Pages
There are 45 lesson assignment pages which should easily correspond to the weeks in an academic
year. Each page provides space for assignments and explanations. There is space for teachers to
write their own notes and there are 7 boxes representing the days of the week for students to track
practice. The boxes are blank except for the first one which is labelled “Lesson Day”. This allows
students to track each day of the week beginning on their lesson day regardless of which day of the
week their lesson falls.
Pages 76 - 82: Note Taking Pages
These pages are empty for any general note taking or as extra space for research or study, These
pages can also be used as extra assignment pages if students have more than 45 lessons in the
year. There are 7 Note Pages for this reason to allow for 52 weeks if necessary.

MY MUSIC DIARY was created by the pianist and pedagogue Starr Meneely. She developed
the diary over many years and uses it with each of her students. Starr has more than 20 years
teaching experience and has seen students go on to enjoy musical success both as professionals
and amateurs. She received a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance with honours from the
University of Alaska Anchorage where she studied music under Dr. Timothy Smith, Dr. George
Belden. Dr. Laura Koenig, and the late Professor Walter Olivares.
In 2014 Starr published a children’s book titled “What a Lovely Sound” which introduces young
children to music through sounds in nature. The book was illustrated by the artist Susan Merrick
and endorsed by Howard Goodall OBE. Starr currently lives with her husband and four children in
the South East of England where she teaches private piano, performs and writes.
