Through Global Engagement
“Students First – Excellence Always” is a very powerful phrase that
embodies the purpose of our Strategic Plan and reflects the dedication and
commitment of our tremendous faculty and staff. While we continue to climb
in rankings and move on a steep trajectory in becoming one of this nation’s
pre-eminent research universities, we always focus on our mission and values,
enabling access to excellence and ensuring that the success of our students
always comes first. It also reflects the determination and drive of our students,
each forging a path that is unique, motivated by purpose and a desire to not
just better their own lives through transformative educational experiences, but
to also provide a better future for their families, and the communities in which
they live and work.
Mavericks make a difference – in Arlington, throughout the DFW metroplex,
across our great State and nation, and globally. From the work of our students
in the Arlington Urban Design Center funded jointly by the city of Arlington
and UTA, and the research of our faculty to improve transportation for older
adults in assisted living communities across the Dallas area, to Colleges working
with the corporate sector to provide specialized training for employees
keeping them at the forefront of their jobs, UTA remains focused on activities
that empower our metroplex as it grows to megacity status. “Bold Solutions”
developed in our research laboratories, studios, offices and classrooms are
increasingly having a “Global Impact” in areas as diverse as addressing issues
related to water resources and flooding through extreme events, developing
hardier strains of soybeans that would thrive in drought prone areas, and
training personnel in treating and supporting individuals with substance use disorders
as a means of addressing the global opioid crisis. From Bangladesh where
a UTA delegation explored collaborations and partnerships at the governmental,
NGO, and university levels, to India and Turkey where unique partnerships
with UTA are opening new areas for the development of intellectual capital
including for high-achieving students at Bachelor’s, Masters and Doctoral levels
to be sponsored to complete degrees at UTA with a focus on returning to their
home countries, to Taiwan and China where our EMBA degrees continue to
develop an innovative and entrepreneurial leadership for the corporate world,
to the innovative development of curricula for science educators connecting
to the Korean language – our faculty are breaking new ground in communities
across the globe.
Great universities achieve renown because of people and their achievements.
An editor of the distinguished bilingual international journal – Mexican
Studies/Estudios Mexicanos – the winner of the 2020 Burton-Blatt Humanitarian
Award, the winner of a distinctive and highly competitive grant from the
Carnegie Corporation of New York, the expert for exhibitions of Italian masterpieces,
educators elected fellows of prestigious international academic and
professional societies, and others honored for their leadership and service by
national and international organizations, all have something in common – they
are members of the faculty and staff of The University of Texas at Arlington
and their work is increasingly being recognized, and celebrated, nationally and
internationally. I’m always in awe of, and inspired by, the scholarship, creativity,
dedication and commitment of our faculty and staff and it gives me great pride
to be able to celebrate some of their key accomplishments over the past 6
months in these pages.
Our strategic plan has provided laser-focus to The University of Texas at Arlington,
putting us on a strong and continuous upward trend in excellence. Our
world-renowned faculty now includes 7 members of the National Academies
of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, and 17 fellows of the National Academy
of Inventors – the most of any University in Texas and 4 th highest in the U.S.
There is no doubt that we are at the forefront – defining the essence of being
the model 21 st Century Urban Research University. We are certified as a
Carnegie R-1 “Very High Research” Institution; designated as a Hispanic Serving
Institution; ranked #1 in the nation for veterans by Military Times, ranked #1 in
Texas for awarding Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees to African American students
and Master’s degrees to all minority students by Diverse: Issues in Higher
Education; ranked #1 in Texas for serving first-generation, low-income students
by Scholarshot; ranked #1 in Texas for the success of first-generation students
by Washington Monthly; and among other program distinctions ranked #1 for
online degrees over a range of disciplines from the Master’s of Public Administration,
and Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction, to the Bachelor’s of Science
in Nursing. And, yes, we are Texas’ next Tier 1 Institution and only months away
from formally receiving that designation.
As we begin this new decade, I’m confident that UTA will continue to think
bigger than ever before, knowing that – together – nothing can stand in our
way. In these pages, you’ll read about the tremendous advances being made
at UTA – in education, research, community engagement and service, and of
the university’s positive, and long-lasting, impact locally and globally. This issue
provides just a glimpse of the excellence that defines The University of Texas at
Arlington and I hope that you will join me in celebrating our outstanding Mavericks
as you go through these pages, and then come to visit and engage with
our students, staff, faculty as alumni as together we change the world.
