MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

As Mayor of the City of Brandon, I’m extremely

honoured to extend a very warm welcome and congratulations

to everyone involved in the 2020 Brandon

Festival of the Arts running from February 10 – March 8

in a variety of venues throughout Brandon. Each year

we are so fortunate to enjoy the talents and hard work

of hundreds of participants in virtually every element of

performing arts. We feel privileged to showcase an

abundance of talented young artists and performers

from our region at this prominent and prestigious

festival.

As long-time “festival parents” ourselves, my wife and I

know only too well the level of preparation and hard

work that leads up to Festival for performers, teachers,

instructors, organizers, parents and families. I believe

the contribution made by the Festival in building confidence,

professionalism and excellence within our young

people is paramount. Moreover, the Festival’s

longstanding role in showcasing the arts is an extremely valuable element in the richness

of our community. I would like to commend and thank the Board, volunteers and adjudicators

for all they do in staging this year’s Festival. Best wishes to all our young artists and

performers; enjoy your festival, learn from your adjudicators and from each other…and

don’t forget to have some fun!

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

On behalf of the Board of Directors of Brandon Festival of the Arts Inc., it is my pleasure to

welcome all performers, adjudicators, teachers, volunteers and audience members to the

2020 Brandon Festival of the Arts.

The Board of Directors is most grateful to the Festival Patrons, award donors and others for

their generous financial contributions. The Brandon Festival of the Arts also wishes to thank

the various venues for the use of their facilities during the four weeks of festival sessions.

The Board of Directors wishes to thank all of the many volunteers for their help in ensuring

that the Festival sessions run smoothly. The success of any festival depends upon the talent,

preparation and encouragement of participants by their teachers and parents.

The Brandon Festival of the Arts is a chance for some participants to showcase their unique

gifts. For others, it’s a welcome opportunity to have a non-competitive performance experience.

I hope all participants will have an enjoyable and rewarding performance experience during

the 2020 Brandon Festival of the Arts.

Rules in the Associated Manitoba Arts Festival (AMAF) Provincial Syllabus 2015 Edition apply

to the 2020 Brandon Festival of the Arts, unless modified or

expanded in the Brandon Festival of the Arts (BFA) Addendum for Dance or

Music and Speech Arts. In every instance, the Addendum is the final authority.

INTRODUCTION

1. Brandon Festival of the Arts is composed of three types of classes: competitive, non-competitive

and those with special rules such as National classes. All classes are potentially competitive and noncompetitive

regardless of the Syllabus designation. Mark your preference in the box provided on the

online entry form. (See also rule number 6 in General Procedures.)

2. In addition to the classes listed in the Provincial Syllabus, the Brandon Festival of the Arts may

also offer other classes, as specified in the Addendum. These classes, however, will not have Provincial

eligibility.

MARKING - Music & Speech Arts Disciplines

1.The following marking system is in effect for all disciplines:

A+ or 90 and above signifies superior performance

A or 85 to 89 signifies distinction

A- or 80 to 84 signifies definite merit

B or 75 to 79 signifies fair

C or 70 to 74 signifies adequate

2. No half-marks will be awarded by adjudicators.

3. The adjudicator will read out only the marks of the competitors taking first, second and

third places at the end of each class. If the classes are very small, the adjudicator may, at

his or her discretion, hear a succeeding class or two prior to adjudication.

4. Winners of eligible solo trophy classes must receive a mark of 85 or over to perform in

Awards Night.

5. The decision of the adjudicator regarding class placement must be accepted as

final. At no time may anyone approach the adjudicator to discuss the matter.

MARKING - Dance

1. The adjudicator will read out the awards at the end of each class. If the classes are very

small, the adjudicator may, at his or her discretion, hear a succeeding class or two prior to

adjudication.

2. The decision of the adjudicator regarding class placement must be accepted as

final. At no time may anyone approach the adjudicator to discuss the matter.

3. The following marking system is in effect:

Gold Honours 96 to 100 Gold 90 to 95

High Silver 86 to 89 Silver 80 to 85

Bronze 70 to 79 Merit up to 69

4. The adjudicator is responsible for all decisions regarding award allocation.

5. Performances to be included in the Dance Showcase will be Adjudicators’ Choice.

6. Awards & Dance Showcase recommendations do not necessarily reflect the highest

marks given.

2020 RULES AND REGULATIONS

GENERAL REGULATIONS - Music & Speech Arts Disciplines

1. REQUIRED ENTRY FEES DELIVERED IN PERSON must be received NO LATER THAN 6:00 PM

at The UPS Store, 1300-18th Street, Brandon, or by 4:30 PM at the School of Music Office at Brandon

University, on MONDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2019. FEES MAILED to Brandon Festival of the Arts must be

paid by cheque only (cash will not be accepted) and MUST BE POSTMARKED NO LATER THAN

November 4, 2019.

2. In all classes except School Music and Community Choir, REPERTOIRE SELECTION and LENGTH

OF TIME MUST be stated on the entry form.

3. PLEASE NOTE: In those classes where selections must be from a recognized examination syllabus, the

syllabus must be the CURRENT one.

4. The Festival will determine the order in which participants will perform. The Festival reserves the right

to alter the order of participants if necessary. All requests for changes to the program order must be submitted

in writing to the President of Brandon Festival of the Arts for consideration. Participants who are

not ready to perform when called upon will be disqualified. If time allows, they will be offered the opportunity

to perform for adjudication only at the end of the class.

5. The Festival Committee reserves the right to cancel any class with insufficient entries.

6. NO CHANGES from competitive to non-competitive status (or vice versa) will be allowed after the

submission of entries. Errors in entries made by participants will be heard for adjudication only.

7. Repertoire which has been entered incorrectly will be moved to the appropriate class. There can be NO

CHANGES in repertoire selections after the entry deadline. In special circumstances, this may be reviewed

by the Festival Committee.

8. All Festival classes shall be under the working management of Brandon Festival of the Arts. Protests

cannot be considered unless made in writing and forwarded to Brandon Festival of the Arts, Inc. within

three (3) days of the close of the Festival. Decisions on such matters shall be final and binding upon all

concerned.

9. Brandon Festival of the Arts is not equipped to supply extraneous articles of equipment such as music

stands or stools.

10. Repeats are at the discretion of the performer/teacher, although Da Capo and Dal Segno must be observed.

11. Electronic amplification will not be permitted unless specified in the original score.

12. Copyright Laws. All Speech Arts classes are covered by an Access Copyright license, secured through

AMAF, which allows copying rights for all speech arts classes. Festival participants may reproduce selection

copies as required. Use of the reproductions is restricted to preparation for and participation in the

Brandon Festival of the Arts or the AMAF Provincial Festival. Original music scores must be provided for

the adjudicator. Accompanists must also perform from original scores when the copyright is still active

and in effect. Unless performing from memory, all entrants must also use original copies. All digital

downloads must provide evidence of legitimate purchase if requested by a Brandon Festival of the Arts

Board Member. If copyright rules are not followed, no mark will be awarded, and the participant will

perform for adjudication only. The ‘for adjudication only performance’ will not be considered for any

awards. If you have any questions concerning Copyright rules, you are strongly urged to contact brandonfestivalofthearts@gmail.com

prior to the start of the festival.

13. Unless a competitor is the ONLY entrant in a specific class, no change in the time slot will be allowed

unless the performer agrees to play for adjudication only. For example, an entrant in a Wednesday evening

class of six participants cannot request to play on a Monday afternoon and still be considered for competitive

ranking in the class.

14. A Chamber Group is defined as a minimum of three (3) performers.

15. Participants must choose a level and stay in that level for all entries within that discipline and instrument,

for competition purposes. Students may, for example, enter both a Grade 8 Piano Solo class & a

Grade 6 Violin Solo class, but may not enter a Grade 8 Piano Solo Sonata class & a Grade 9 Piano Solo

J.S. Bach class. Please note, however, that participants may enter up to two classes at the next level

(above or below) in the same instrument FOR ADJUDICATION ONLY. Exceptions will be permitted:

A. for individuals performing in duet and group classes. A duet entry must enter at the level of the more

advanced competitor. The lower level competitor may still compete as a solo performer in the class

appropriate for his or her level, even if this differs from the level of the duet class entered.

B. instrumental ensembles where the participant may play a different instrument in a second ensemble.

C. for a conductor who may conduct two or more groups in the same festival.

16. Performers will be permitted to play only the number of movements required by the class

description.

17. National Classes: Own choice, one movement of a Sonata or Concerto/Concerted Work. Orchestral

part to be played on a piano. NC, NV 1, NK 2, NS 3, NG 4, NW 5, NB 6, NCH 8 and NMT 9 are the

only classes eligible for recommendation to the National class at the Provincial Festival. No marks will

be awarded in National classes. Adjudicators may recommend any number of participants to the Provincial

Music Festival. These participants must, in the opinion of the adjudicator, meet the national standard.

To enter a National Class, a competitor must not be older than age 28 as of December 31 of the year

preceding the Festival. Please note: To be eligible to proceed to Provincial Festival, at least TWO

classes must be entered at the same level and discipline. Please refer to the National Syllabus for complete

regulations.

18. Transposition up or down is allowed in all vocal classes below the Intermediate level.

19. Memorization and its effect upon marks will be subject to the discretion of the adjudicator; however,

memorization is usually desirable.

20. For all solo and duet Own Choice selections, participants may not perform the same selection at the

Festival in subsequent years.

21. Participants may not perform the same selection or part of the same selection at the Festival in more

than one class. PLEASE NOTE: This also applies to repertoire entered in the Provincial and National

classes.

22. Sight Reading classes will be heard privately.

23. No current Festival test pieces are eligible as Own Choice selections in the same discipline;

however, for example, a vocal test piece could be a choral Own Choice.

24. For Own Choice selections, the quality of the music chosen and its suitability for the class will be

taken into consideration by the adjudicator.

25. Practising on the Festival pianos is not allowed during the Festival session.

26. Visual or audio taping must be unobtrusive and silent. Such taping is at the discretion of the Festival

Executive. Adjudications may not be taped (audio or visual) under any circumstances.

27.No entry fee refunds will be allowed.

28. All music scores presented to the adjudicator must have the first measure of each line identified by a

measure number.

GENERAL PROCEDURES - DANCE

Festival (AMAF) and those of Dance Manitoba.

A. In Musical Theatre/Stage Dance With and Without Voice, lip sync is not acceptable.

B. In duos, trios and groups, age will be determined by the average age of the participants as of

January 1, 2020. (Example: a group with an average age of 10.4 would be in the 10 Years & Under category.

A group with an average of 10.5 would be in the 12 Years & Under category.)

11. Visual or audio taping must be unobtrusive and silent. Such taping is at the discretion of the Festival

Executive. Adjudications may not be taped (audio or visual), under any circumstances.

12. No entry fee refunds will be allowed.

13. The adjudicator will read out the remarks and levels of each class at the end of the adjudication of each

class. Several classes will be observed before being adjudicated during a dance session.

AWARDS - MUSIC & SPEECH ARTS

1. Scholarships and trophies are listed in the Addendum. Some may not have been confirmed at time of

publishing, and amounts and donors may change.

2. Information regarding class eligibility for trophy competition may be obtained from

trophies@brandonfestivalofthearts.ca.

3. All performers in non-competitive and competitive classes will be given equal consideration for scholarships

and trophies by the adjudicator. Eligibility for all SOLO scholarships requires performance in two or

more solo classes in the same discipline.

4. Multi-level, Open and Honours level classes are not eligible for trophies, with the exception of School and

Community Music, Speech Choirs and Piano Ensembles.

5. Festival certificates will be awarded to the first-, second- and third-place winners with a mark of 80 or over.

A Festival gold seal will be placed on the certificates of first-place winners of competitive solo and duet

classes with a mark of 85 or over.

6. The Open classes for Piano Duet (K2708), Piano Trio (K2744), and Piano Quartet (K2764) shall be eligible

for the Intermediate and Advanced Piano Ensemble trophies. The grade level of the most advanced entrant

shall determine the trophy for which an entry is eligible. To be eligible for a Piano Ensemble trophy, the

repertoire presented may be an original composition or an arrangement for One Piano, 4 Hands; One Piano, 6

Hands; Two Pianos, 4 Hands; or Two Pianos, 8 Hands.

7. An entrant may not win the same scholarship or trophy more than twice. In the case of a quartet, a trophy

may be won multiple times, provided 50 percent of the members are new. Choirs, speech choirs and school

ensembles are exempt from this regulation.

8. Winners of eligible solo trophy classes must receive a mark of 85 or over to perform at Awards Night.

Winners of multiple trophy classes shall perform their selection(s) from one of these classes when competing

at Awards Night.

2020 RULES AND REGULATIONS AUDIENCE AND PROCEDURAL NOTES

9. Time limits for Awards Nights must be strictly adhered to. Failure to do so will result in disqualification.

Time limits are as follows:

Piano: H.E. Phipps Trophy, Grade 9, 10 minutes

Tim and Lynn Silversides Trophy, Grade 10

12 minutes

Western Financial Group Tudor Bowl, Diploma Level 12 minutes

Strings: Alex Whyte Memorial Trophy, Grades 8 and 9 10 minutes

Victor Krahn Memorial Trophy, Grade 10 and Diploma 12 minutes

Brass: Beta Sigma Phi Trophy, Grades 9, 10 and Diploma 12 minutes

Woodwinds: Albert Johnson Memorial Trophy, Grades 9, 10 and Diploma 12 minutes

10. Progression of a student is at the discretion of the teacher. Winners of Solo Trophy classes up to &

including Gr. 7 are expected to move to a higher level in the ensuing year. Exceptions may be made

where there is an age span of several years.

11. Rowe Scholarship: Festival participants older than twenty-five years of age by December 31, 2019,

will not be eligible for the Rowe Scholarship.

12. Scholarship awards will be announced at the Awards Nights, with the exception of those for Speech

Arts, Guitar and School & Community Music. Thank you notes from scholarship winners will be

required prior to the release of scholarship cheques. It is the hope of Brandon Festival of the Arts that

these awards will be used for further study.

AWARDS - DANCE

Please refer to the Scholarships section of the Dance Addendum for eligibility requirements.

1. Scholarships and trophies are listed in the Addendum. Some may not have been confirmed at time of

publishing, and amounts and donors may change.

2. All performers in non-competitive and competitive classes will be given equal consideration for

scholarships by the adjudicator. Performers will be eligible for scholarships when only ONE solo class

is entered unless otherwise specified in the terms of reference. Scholarships requiring more than one

class to be entered include the Riesberry Memorial Scholarship and the Barbara Withey Ehnes Scholarship

in Ballet Studies. Please note: Ballet Studies is considered a solo class.

3.Age categories 19 Years & Over and Multi-generational classes are not eligible for scholarships.

4. There is no limit to the number of awards that adjudicators may give in any class.

5. An entrant may not win the same scholarship or trophy more than twice.

6. Awards will be announced at the Dance Showcase. Thank you notes from scholarship winners will be

required prior to the release of scholarship cheques. It is the hope of Brandon Festival of the Arts that

scholarships will be used for continued dance studies.

7. Kaye and G.R. Rowe Memorial Scholarship: Festival participants older than twenty-five years of

age by December 31, 2019 will not be eligible for the Rowe Scholarship.

Audience members are asked not to enter or leave the performance area of the venue while a performance

or adjudication is in progress. This can be most distracting for performers, adjudicators

and fellow audience members. Entrance and exit to the venue will only be permitted at appropriate

intervals. Participants and audience members are requested to move quickly and quietly in the

performance area of the venue to minimize distractions.

Brandon Festival of the Arts reserves the right to alter the order of the program, if

necessary, to accommodate any unforeseen circumstances which may arise.

Following each session, the adjudicator will make a public adjudication and will read out only the

marks of the competitors taking first, second and third places at the end of each class. If the classes

are very small, the adjudicator may, at his or her discretion, hear a succeeding class or two

prior to adjudication.

Visual or audio taping of performances must be unobtrusive and silent. Such taping is at the discretion

of the Festival Executive. Adjudications may not be taped (visual or audio), under any

circumstances.

Participants, teachers and audience members must not make any attempt to

communicate with the adjudicators during the Festival. Every attempt is made to isolate the adjudicators

from the public until the close of their discipline’s sessions.

The adjudicators are responsible for all decisions regarding the awarding of

scholarships and trophies, and the selection of performers for Dance Showcase and Festival Encore

Concert. The decisions of the adjudicators are final.

The Rules and Regulations must be followed by all of the performers, teachers and audience members.

Protests or complaints must be submitted in writing within three (3) days of the close of the

Festival. Copies of the Rules and Regulations may be found in this Official Program and the current

Addenda to Brandon Festival of the Arts, available at www.brandonfestivalofthearts.ca.

Those who do not abide by the Rules and Regulations may be banned from further participation in

the Festival.

A SHORT HISTORY OF THE BRANDON FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS by R.W. Brockway (revised 2020)

The Western Manitoba Schools Music Competition Festival of June 8 and 9, 1928,

initiated by the Brandon School Board, marked the beginning of Brandon Festival

of the Arts. Thirty-two choirs, fifty-eight soloists and fifteen duets were featured.

In 1929, the Western Manitoba Musical Festival for adults and church choirs was

started by the Rotary Club and in 1930, these two Festivals were amalgamated,

and classes for piano and orchestra were added. The festival idea caught on, and

during the hard times of the 1930s, more than 2,000 contestants performed to a

total audience of 4,500. In 1931, thirty-six communities as well as Brandon sent

participants to the Festival, which now included orchestra and string classes. In

1933, Brandon’s Festival was affiliated with the British Federation Musical Competition

Festivals, so that one British adjudicator judged all of the classes every year.

Throughout most of the 1930s, the Festival thrived but, by 1940, with World War II

preoccupations looming ever larger, entries and classes both declined. Though the

School Board and Rotary Club decided to continue the festival after the 1941

event, no Festival was held again until 1948. The renewed Festival, organized as a

result of a public meeting called by the Rotary Club, included piano, vocal, instrumental,

choral, and band classes, and later, speech arts and folk dancing. By 1966,

there were so many entries that the Festival was divided into two sections, one for

music and one for speech arts and dance. In Canada’s Centennial Year, 1967, there

was also an evening of one-act plays and in 1968, a final Concert was reintroduced.

During the late 1960s and 1970s, the Festival suffered from not only financial reverses,

but controversy. The old question as to whether the Festival should

encourage competition or participation just for pleasure surfaced once again. As

an experiment, all classes were made non-competitive in 1971. In addition, in order

to counter charges that the Festival had become too “stuffy,” classes were

added for folk and rock groups, and folk song solos with guitar accompaniment.

Popular response indicated that a majority favored competitive classes, so a mixed

format of competitive and non-competitive options was adopted in 1972. That

year also saw the introduction of the National Festival of Music by the Federation

of Canadian Music Festivals, and the first Manitoba Highlights Concert. New categories

of classes continued to be added throughout the 1970s, some to endure,

like ballet, and others to be dropped as interest faded. In 1978, the growing diversity

of classes was recognized in the new name, Brandon Festival of the Arts, Inc.,

adopted that year.

The 1980s were good years. In 1982, the first Provincial Syllabus was published in

which all classes were made potentially competitive or non-competitive according to

the wishes of the entrants. Among other new classes, some for senior citizens were

included. Contestants in the Brandon Festival of the Arts continued to be drawn from

all ages, from all over Manitoba and even Saskatchewan. As in the past, some young

artists achieved international fame, having gone from Provincial triumphs to national.

In 1987 the Diamond Jubilee of the Brandon Festival was celebrated with a special

Concert, “Six Decades of Festival Highlights,” featuring many prominent guests, and

also a commemorative booklet from which this short history was taken. In that year,

there were 1,825 entries in seventeen disciplines. The Festival lasted twenty-four days

that year.

Unfortunately, 1987 also saw the introduction of the ban on the use of photocopies

by performers in compliance with copyright law, which severely decreased entries in

classes such as band, choir, and orchestra in subsequent years. This disaster was

followed by the cutbacks of the 1990s, which have resulted in the loss of much public

funding at all festival levels, and increasing difficulty getting volunteers. Nevertheless,

despite setbacks, highly dedicated workers and enthusiastic entrants continued to

make Brandon Festival of the Arts a lively event each year and a significant contribution

to the cultural life of Western Manitoba, despite a growing need for more

volunteer help, both on the committee and during the Festival.

Space does not allow naming the many dedicated volunteers who have contributed to

the ongoing success of Brandon Festival of the Arts. Nor can the many performers

who have gone on from Festival participation to make a significant contribution to the

arts be mentioned. Those interested in a detailed history of the early years of the

Festival are referred to “On the Road to Excellence,” the 1987 Centennial publication

of Brandon Festival of the Arts.

In 2020, Brandon Festival of the Arts continues to thrive, with over 1,300 entries and

over 3,600 performers. Thanks to its many volunteers, patrons and sponsors, Brandon

Festival of the Arts, Inc. is able to host a month-long event in February and March

each year, drawing performers from many communities in southwestern Manitoba. It

continues to provide a valuable opportunity for entrants of all ages to develop their

skills and receive feedback from nationally recognized adjudicators.

Brandon University provides a full-tuition scholarship for one year to a full-time student

In 1996, Brandon Festival of the Arts received a bequest from the late Kaye Rowe, which enabled the

Festival to provide annually two $600 scholarships, one for the outstanding performance in Speech Arts

and the other for the most promising performance in any other discipline in the Festival. In 2008, a $300

scholarship was added for the second-place performer in any area of the Festival.

ADJUDICATORS 2020

DAVID KLASSEN —VOCAL

Noted for his “rich baritone” (Minneapolis Star Tribune),

and for “enthrall(ing)” audiences with his “resonant vocals”

and “charismatic” stagecraft (Opera Canada), David

Klassen holds a Bachelor’s Degree in vocal performance

from the University of Manitoba and a Master’s degree

in vocal performance from the University of Minnesota.

He’s been featured as a soloist with companies such

as the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Saskatoon Opera, and the

Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, including a WSO performance

of Rossini’s “Largo al Factotum” for a Canada Day

audience of thirty thousand. His versatility as a performer

has brought him to the stage throughout the Canadian

Prairies, Minnesota, New York, and beyond.

David maintains a busy schedule performing, teaching and adjudicating across western

Canada. As a professional singer and teacher, he has studied languages with renowned

diction coaches including Pierre Vallet (New York Metropolitan Opera), and Nico Castel.

His students have been accepted to undergraduate and graduate programs across

Canada and the United States.

In 2015, David was nominated for CBC’s “Manitoba Future 40” award for his work as a

singer and university educator in the province, and in his home city of Steinbach where

he has been acknowledged numerous times as one of the region’s greatest contributors

to the Arts. He currently holds a teaching position at the University of Manitoba Marcel

A. Desautels Faculty of Music, and acts as the Director of Performing Arts with the Steinbach

Arts Council.

KIMBERLEY SUNDELL—JUNIOR & INTERMEDIATE PIANO

ARCT (Piano Pedagogy), Royal Conservatory of Music

ARCT (Piano Performance), Royal Conservatory of Music

Kimberley has been instructing students of all levels and ages for twenty-five

years in piano, rudiments, history, harmony and pedagogy. Her students

consistently win awards at festivals, and successfully complete scholarship

and university entrance auditions, and have received invitations to perform

at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in NYC.

As a teen, Kimberley started studies with

Dr. Joan Miller, and continued with her

into university. She completed her ARCT

diplomas with Caron Whitlaw-Hiebert.

During this time, she participated in master

classes for Dr. Judy Kehler-Siebert, Dr.

Laura Loewen, Michael Oike, Eric Lussier,

and Harold Lugsdin.

Kimberley completed a M.A. in Piano Pedagogy

through the Piano Pedagogy

Research Laboratory at the University of

Ottawa. Her thesis analyzed the inclusion

of comprehensive musicianship elements

in beginner piano method books. She has

presented her thesis research at conferences

for CFMTA, MTNA, and NCKP.

Kimberley is a member of the Royal Conservatory

of Music College of Examiners as

a piano examiner.

PATSY ANDREWS-VERT — SPEECH ARTS

Patsy Andrews-Vert, originally

from Souris, MB, received a Bachelor

of Music Education from

Brandon University (Brandon MB)

in 1984. She also holds an Associate

in Flute Performance from the

Western Board of Music (1986).

Patsy has taught students of all

instrumental music levels in both

Saskatchewan and Manitoba and

continues to maintain a small

private studio. She is an active

clinician, adjudicator and

conductor in handbells and band.

Patsy is currently the Chair of the

Handbell Musicians of Canada, and

President of the Manitoba Guild of English Handbell Ringers. She retired

from teaching in the Prairie Rose School Division and the Red River Valley

School Division in South-Central Manitoba in 2016 but continues to stay

active in the education system.

Patsy is the coordinator of the Meridian Arts Festival in Starbuck, past

Secretary for the Handbell Guilds of Canada, past president of the

Manitoba Band Association, and a member of the Canadian Band

Association.

Patsy has conducted handbell workshops in BC and at the International

Music Camp at the International Peace Gardens. She has adjudicated

handbells across Canada. During the summer of 2018 she was the

Canadian representative to the International Handbell Symposium, in

Cairns

Australia, where she presented a workshop on Canadian Folk Songs for

Handbells. Patsy believes that music and the arts is a lifelong skill and tries

to exemplify that in her life, in her community and beyond.

In her spare time, Patsy enjoys conducting the Trinity Lutheran Church

Choir, the Trinity Lutheran Handbell choir, playing in Ring Out! Handbell

quartet and the Rochester Ringers, a community handbell choir based in

Winnipeg, playing trombone and piccolo in the Westwood Community

Band in Winnipeg, mowing their 17acre acreage, travelling, and

volunteering in the community.

HYON SUK KIM — BRASS & WOODWINDS

Hyon Suk Kim recently moved from South Korea to

Regina, and joined the Regina Symphony Orchestra

as a Principal clarinetist. Before moving to Canada,

she was the principal clarinetist of Daejeon

Philharmonic Orchestra in South Korea from 2003-

2016. She holds a Licentiate Diploma from McGill

University, Certificate from Yale University, and

Masters degree from Northwestern University. Her

teachers include David Shifrin, Russell Dagon, Daniel Gilbert and Emilio Iacurto. She has

won first prizes in solo performance in All Japan Music Competition for the Korean School.

She has been invited as a soloist and performed concertos with prestigious orchestras

including the Kangnam Symphony Orchestra, and the Arco Diabolo Orchestra. Moreover,

she has played recitals in US, Japan, and in South Korea. As a chamber music lover, she

was a member of Daejeon chamber music society, and is a founder and the leader of the

‘Clarinuts’ Ensemble, a clarinet quintet.

CATHERINE ROBBINS – SCHOOL & COMMUNITY MUSIC

Catherine Robbins is a dynamic music educator known

especially for her work in vocal techniques and choral

pedagogy. She is in demand as a presenter, clinician, and

adjudicator at workshops and festivals in both vocal and choral

fields, and keeps a busy schedule as a guest conductor of youth

choirs of all ages across Canada.

Dr. Robbins is currently Assistant Professor of Choral Studies

and Music Education at the University of Manitoba Desautels

Faculty of Music. She teaches courses in conducting, choral

techniques, vocal techniques, and choral repertoire, and directs

the University of Manitoba Concert Choir.

Dr. Robbins is known for her work in applications of anatomical

awareness and somatic approaches to conducting and singing.

She has presented at national and international symposiums in

the areas of music education and choral techniques and

publishes a regular focus column on vocal techniques in

Anacrusis: The Journal of Choral Canada. Catherine specializes in pedagogy for developing

voices, vocal and conductor health, and collaborative self-study and life history research for

music educators.

Krista has had over twenty years

experience as a professional dancer,

actor, teacher, director and choreographer.

She was on Broadway in

the Tony nominated production of

Jesus Christ Superstar and has spent

nine seasons at The Stratford

Festival including Guys and Dolls,

The Sound of Music, Carousel, Man

of La Mancha (Assistant

Choreographer), The Who's Tommy,

Fiddler On The Roof, Jesus Christ

Superstar, Camelot, West Side Story

(Assistant Choreographer), A Funny Thing..., The Music Man, Fuente Ovejuna,

Gigi, The Tempest. She choreographed Snow White the Panto (Capitol Theatre)

and was honoured to play Greta Hodgkinson’s daughter in the film Roxana

(Bravo) choreographed by Roberto Campanella. Other films include Hairspray,

The Music Man and Eloise at the Plaza. Krista completed her RAD Advanced 1 and

2 Ballet exams and has trained at Quinte ballet school and with Master Ballet

Teacher Gerard MacIsaac.

LES CHALMERS– CLASSICAL GUITAR

Les graduated from the Brandon University School of Music in 1998 with both his

Bachelor of Music, with a major in Classical Guitar, and a Bachelor of Education

degree. In 2001, he also graduated from the Audio Engineering program at OIART in

London, Ontario where he was the recipient of the Kurosman Award as well as an

Honorary Associate Diploma. Les continues to pursue his love of music as an

Educator of 19 years, Adjudicator, Guitarist,

and Sound Engineer. He currently teaches

the Classroom Guitar, Guitar Ensemble

and Music Production programs at River

East Collegiate in Winnipeg. He actively

writes and arranges music for Classroom Guitar,

Guitar Ensemble and Wind Ensemble. His

Guitar Ensembles have performed and competed

for the highest accolades throughout

the Province. Les is the current President of

the Manitoba Classroom Guitar Association as

well as the Vice President of the Manitoba

Music Educators Association.

SHIRLEY ELIAS — SENIOR PIANO

Shirley Elias has

frequently toured across

Canada as a soloist, broadcasted

on CBC's Radio Two,

and recorded several CDs,

one as a soloist with the

Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.

She gave her first

prize-winning Canadian

solo tour at the age of 20,

and following graduate

studies, became passionate

about contemporary

music, premiering 8 new

music concertos during the WSO’s New Music Festivals. Her solo new music disc is

entitled The Adventures of PianoWoman!®, a sobriquet she earned from her interpretation

of Randolph Peters’ concerto, which was commissioned for her and the

WSO by CBC. Elias has received numerous Manitoba Arts Council and Canada

Council grants for her performances, tours, commissions and recordings, and was

represented as a soloist by Andrew Kwan Artist Management in Toronto. Ms. Elias’

career has also included serving as the Executive Director for several arts organizations,

and she is currently on Piano Faculty at the Canadian Mennonite University.

ALIA RUEMPER – TAP, JAZZ, HIP HOP, STAGE DANCE &

MUSICAL THEATRE

Alia is a fully certified ADAPT jazz and tap teacher and completed her Canadian

Dance Teachers Association (CDTA) Gold medal jazz and tap exams with Honours

status. She has a BA Dance and a BKin General Kinesiology from the University of

Calgary and completed her MSc in Dance Science (with distinction) at Laban in

London, England. Alia is also Certified in the Acrobatic Arts training syllabus.

Alia’s Master thesis “Correlations Between General Joint Hypermobility and Joint

Hypermobility Syndrome and Injury in Contemporary Dance Students” was published

in the Journal of Dance Medicine and Science. She also presented her thesis

at the International Association of Dance Medicine and Science conference in The

Hague, The Netherlands where she was received the “Student Research

Award”. While she was completing her Masters degree in England she performed

in a charity showcase of the musical, “Me and My Girl” at the famous London Palladium,

and also participated in the Jack Petchey Theatre Challenge at Her Majesty’s

Theatre.

Alia has attended the Dance Teacher Summit in New York City, as well as the

Dance Studio Life Conference in Arizona. As a member of Healthy Dancer Canada,

Alia recently presented at their fall conference in Calgary. Continuing education is

important to Alia and she had also taken the following teacher training courses:

Progressing Ballet Technique, Lisa Howell’s Perfect Form Physiotherapy, and International

Dance Teaching Standards. The world of dance is constantly progressing

and Alia strives to continue learning

and educating herself in as many ways

as possible.

Alia has been based in Alberta for the

last 10 years working as a competitive

dance program director at a successful

studio. Her students have continued

on to dance post graduation with Da-

Costa Talent, Modus Operandi, Harbour’s

ITP, and The Source as well as

training programs with Royal Winnipeg

Ballet, Alberta Ballet and YYC Dance

Project.

GABRIEL KASTELIC —STRINGS

A native of Lethbridge, Alberta, Gabriel Kastelic has been heavily involved in the

Southern Alberta music community for many years. He has extensive

experience as an orchestral musician, having performed in concert with the

Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, the Red Deer Symphony, Symphony of the

Kootenays, and is currently the Principal Violist of the Lethbridge Symphony

Orchestra. He is also a seasoned chamber musician, winning first place the

Chamber Music category at the 2012 National Music Festival with his ensemble,

the MRU String Trio and is presently the violist in the Musaeus String Quartet.

Along with performance, Gabriel’s greatest passion in music is teaching. He has

held numerous teaching positions over the years including professor of

violin/viola for the Calgary Multicultural Orchestra, Director of the String

Academy for Medicine Hat College, and most recently as violin/viola instructor

for the University of Lethbridge Conservatory. Gabriel is also a sought-after

adjudicator, frequently serving in this role for various music festivals and

competitions.
