MESSAGE FROM THE MAYORAs Mayor of the City of Brandon, I’m extremelyhonoured to extend a very warm welcome and congratulationsto everyone involved in the 2020 BrandonFestival of the Arts running from February 10 – March 8in a variety of venues throughout Brandon. Each yearwe are so fortunate to enjoy the talents and hard workof hundreds of participants in virtually every element ofperforming arts. We feel privileged to showcase anabundance of talented young artists and performersfrom our region at this prominent and prestigiousfestival.As long-time “festival parents” ourselves, my wife and Iknow only too well the level of preparation and hardwork that leads up to Festival for performers, teachers,instructors, organizers, parents and families. I believethe contribution made by the Festival in building confidence,professionalism and excellence within our youngpeople is paramount. Moreover, the Festival’slongstanding role in showcasing the arts is an extremely valuable element in the richnessof our community. I would like to commend and thank the Board, volunteers and adjudicatorsfor all they do in staging this year’s Festival. The Brandon Festival of the Arts also wishes to thankthe various venues for the use of their facilities during the four weeks of festival sessions.The Board of Directors wishes to thank all of the many volunteers for their help in ensuringthat the Festival sessions run smoothly. The success of any festival depends upon the talent,preparation and encouragement of participants by their teachers and parents.The Brandon Festival of the Arts is a chance for some participants to showcase their uniquegifts. Rules in the Associated Manitoba Arts Festival (AMAF) Provincial Syllabus 2015 Edition applyto the 2020 Brandon Festival of the Arts, unless modified orexpanded in the Brandon Festival of the Arts (BFA) Addendum for Dance orMusic and Speech Arts. In every instance, the Addendum is the final authority.INTRODUCTION1. Brandon Festival of the Arts is composed of three types of classes: competitive, non-competitiveand those with special rules such as National classes. All classes are potentially competitive and noncompetitiveregardless of the Syllabus designation. Mark your preference in the box provided on theonline entry form. (See also rule number 6 in General Procedures.)2. In addition to the classes listed in the Provincial Syllabus, the Brandon Festival of the Arts mayalso offer other classes, as specified in the Addendum. These classes, however, will not have Provincialeligibility.MARKING - Music & Speech Arts Disciplines1.The following marking system is in effect for all disciplines:A+ or 90 and above signifies superior performanceA or 85 to 89 signifies distinctionA- or 80 to 84 signifies definite meritB or 75 to 79 signifies fairC or 70 to 74 signifies adequate2. No half-marks will be awarded by adjudicators.3. The adjudicator will read out only the marks of the competitors taking first, second andthird places at the end of each class. If the classes are very small, the adjudicator may, athis or her discretion, hear a succeeding class or two prior to adjudication.4. Winners of eligible solo trophy classes must receive a mark of 85 or over to perform inAwards Night.5. The decision of the adjudicator regarding class placement must be accepted asfinal. At no time may anyone approach the adjudicator to discuss the matter.MARKING - Dance1. The adjudicator will read out the awards at the end of each class. If the classes are verysmall, the adjudicator may, at his or her discretion, hear a succeeding class or two prior toadjudication.2. The decision of the adjudicator regarding class placement must be accepted asfinal. At no time may anyone approach the adjudicator to discuss the matter.3. The following marking system is in effect:Gold Honours 96 to 100 Gold 90 to 95High Silver 86 to 89 Silver 80 to 85Bronze 70 to 79 Merit up to 694. The adjudicator is responsible for all decisions regarding award allocation.5. Performances to be included in the Dance Showcase will be Adjudicators’ Choice.6. Awards & Dance Showcase recommendations do not necessarily reflect the highestmarks given.2020 RULES AND REGULATIONSGENERAL REGULATIONS - Music & Speech Arts Disciplines1. REQUIRED ENTRY FEES DELIVERED IN PERSON must be received NO LATER THAN 6:00 PMat The UPS Store, 1300-18th Street, Brandon, or by 4:30 PM at the School of Music Office at BrandonUniversity, on MONDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2019. FEES MAILED to Brandon Festival of the Arts must bepaid by cheque only (cash will not be accepted) and MUST BE POSTMARKED NO LATER THANNovember 4, 2019.2. In all classes except School Music and Community Choir, REPERTOIRE SELECTION and LENGTHOF TIME MUST be stated on the entry form.3. PLEASE NOTE: In those classes where selections must be from a recognized examination syllabus, thesyllabus must be the CURRENT one.4. The Festival will determine the order in which participants will perform. The Festival reserves the rightto alter the order of participants if necessary. All requests for changes to the program order must be submittedin writing to the President of Brandon Festival of the Arts for consideration. Participants who arenot ready to perform when called upon will be disqualified. If time allows, they will be offered the opportunityto perform for adjudication only at the end of the class.5. The Festival Committee reserves the right to cancel any class with insufficient entries.6. NO CHANGES from competitive to non-competitive status (or vice versa) will be allowed after thesubmission of entries. Errors in entries made by participants will be heard for adjudication only.7. Repertoire which has been entered incorrectly will be moved to the appropriate class. There can be NOCHANGES in repertoire selections after the entry deadline. In special circumstances, this may be reviewedby the Festival Committee.8. All Festival classes shall be under the working management of Brandon Festival of the Arts. Protestscannot be considered unless made in writing and forwarded to Brandon Festival of the Arts, Inc. withinthree (3) days of the close of the Festival. Decisions on such matters shall be final and binding upon allconcerned.9. Brandon Festival of the Arts is not equipped to supply extraneous articles of equipment such as musicstands or stools.10. Repeats are at the discretion of the performer/teacher, although Da Capo and Dal Segno must be observed.11. Electronic amplification will not be permitted unless specified in the original score.12. Copyright Laws. All Speech Arts classes are covered by an Access Copyright license, secured throughAMAF, which allows copying rights for all speech arts classes. Festival participants may reproduce selectioncopies as required. Use of the reproductions is restricted to preparation for and participation in theBrandon Festival of the Arts or the AMAF Provincial Festival. Original music scores must be provided forthe adjudicator. Accompanists must also perform from original scores when the copyright is still activeand in effect. Unless performing from memory, all entrants must also use original copies. All digitaldownloads must provide evidence of legitimate purchase if requested by a Brandon Festival of the ArtsBoard Member. If copyright rules are not followed, no mark will be awarded, and the participant willperform for adjudication only. The ‘for adjudication only performance’ will not be considered for anyawards. If you have any questions concerning Copyright rules, you are strongly urged to contact brandonfestivalofthearts@gmail.comprior to the start of the festival.13. Unless a competitor is the ONLY entrant in a specific class, no change in the time slot will be allowedunless the performer agrees to play for adjudication only. For example, an entrant in a Wednesday eveningclass of six participants cannot request to play on a Monday afternoon and still be considered for competitiveranking in the class.14. A Chamber Group is defined as a minimum of three (3) performers.7
