5 SCIENTIFIC REASONS YOU'LL ALWAYS BE
ATTACHED TO YOUR MOM
...and why she's attached to you
No two mothers are alike (except for the fact that
they all love candles).
But through the lens of science, some spectacular
similarities do shine through. Evolution has shaped
generations of mothers and their relationships with
their kids. As scientists have shown, the genetic
inheritance we receive from our moms goes far
beyond the X chromosomes they pass down, seeping
into our brains and our behavior.
The relationship goes both ways. Children also have
measurable effects on their mothers, meaning that the
next time your mom asks when you’re coming home,
you can technically say that you’re always with her
(but you should probably visit too). Below are some of
the ways we’re attached to our biological mothers and
how they’re attached to us. Of course, there are many
beautiful ways to be a mother outside of having a
biological relationship; unfortunately, there aren’t
enough studies yet on the families that you get to
choose.
Mom’s voice lights up our brains
When you go to a grocery with your mom, somehow
you can always hear her yelling for you to grab some
dip from across the store. There’s no explanation for
that yet, but scientists do know that children uniquely
respond to the sound of their mother’s voice. In 2016,
researchers from the Stanford University School of
Medicine showed that children’s brains are more
engaged when their hear their mother’s voice and that
the sound of her voice activates very specific parts of
their brains. The team showed this through an
experiment in which 24 kids aged seven to 12 had
their brains scanned while they listened to recordings
of either their mother or random women say nonsense
words (the idea being that meaningless words
wouldn’t trigger other parts of the brain). When an
individual mom said those words, the parts of her
kids’ brains related
to emotion and reward processing, social functioning,
relevance detection, and face recognition became
activated. While it had been established that hearing a
mother’s voice brought her children emotional
comfort, this was the first time that “biological
circuitry” could be linked to the experience. Moms
have “quick access to so many different brain
systems,” the team writes, which is really a mom’s
dream come true.
A special chemical puts the female
brain in Mom mode
Looking at a baby may give you far less pleasure
than looking at a puppy now, but that likely will
change if you ever have your own child. In a 2014
study on mice published in Nature, a team of
researchers showed that the “love
hormone” oxytocin flips the brain into a maternal
state.
The study is based on the fact that, on both sides of
the mouse auditory cortex, there are oxytocin
receptors and oxytocin-producing neurons.
The team hypothesized that these receptors and their
proximity to the hearing system could explain why
mice — and human mothers — quickly respond to the
sounds of their children.
Injecting oxytocin into the left auditory cortex of
female mice who’d never had children immediately
caused them to respond to the calls of baby mice. The
surge of oxytocin seemed to transform their behavior
and their interpretation to social cues, which the
scientists think also applies to happens to new human
mothers, whose brains also get flooded with the
chemical.

We inherit some of our Mother's fears
In another rodent study, scientists
showed that maternal fear responses
could be passed down to their children
just by limited exposure to the fear
stimuli. The 2014 paper, published
in PNAS, showed that scents alone can
pass fear onto newborns. In the
experiment, female rats were first
conditioned using electric shocks to
fear the smell of peppermint. Then, the
rats were impregnated. When the pups
were born, they too were exposed to
the peppermint smell but were not given a shock.
Nevertheless, the pups were still afraid when
exposed to peppermint, even when their mother
wasn’t present. This may explain
why, in humans, PTSD and certain phobias can
sometimes be passed down from mothers to
children
Brains get a boost from a Mom's
heartbeat
A 2015 study from researchers at Brigham and
Women’s Hospital in Boston found that our brains are
not only activated by the sound of our mother’s voices
but also actually grow because of it. Twenty premature
babies, who had spent more time in an incubator than
with their moms, were studied as the sound of their
mother’s voice and heartbeat were pumped into the
incubators with tiny speakers. The babies, each born
between eight to 15 weeks early, listened to these
recordings three times a day for 30 days, while a
control group of another 20 didn’t get the private DJ
session.
By the end of the experiment, the scientists concluded
that the experimental group had developed
significantly larger auditory cortexes than the control
group. In other words, the sounds from their mothers
actually made parts of their brains grow. If only
calling your mom during finals could give you that
same brain-growing boost as well.
Our cells are in our Moms - and vice
versa
We may inherit genes from our mothers, but while
we’re in the womb, we pass on some of our genetic
material to them as well through the form of cells.
As a mother’s placenta grows, it attaches to her
arteries, creating a two-way channel between her and
her baby. Large amounts of fetal material are slurped
off into her bloodstream, leaving mom with her
infant’s cells entering her organs, becoming heart
muscle cells, and sometimes even turning into neurons.
A 2015 study in Molecular Human Reproduction found
that tissue samples of women who had died during or
just after pregnancy and were pregnant with boys had
male cells in their brains, hearts, and kidneys — with
roughly one cell out of every 1,000 being male.
For a time, scientists thought that these fetal cells in
mothers may pose a danger, perhaps increasing the
likelihood of developing autoimmune disorders. But
more recently, scientists have shown that these cells
actually help moms be healthy and decrease the
likelihood of developing cancer and cardiovascular
disease. On the flip side, cells from moms cross the
placenta and e nter the fetal body — meaning that you
have a bit of her cells as well.
Happy Mother's Day to

The

Scoffer
This month our
Excellence Award goes to
W H Y A R E W E D O I N G
T H I S ?
With Trip Advisor being regularly
discredited (allegedly 150 positive reviews
for 300 Euros was the going rate locally last
summer) and with Facebook posters
destroying businesses with single negative
feedback, which when you read further is
over trivial issues - any person who has
never erred in the kitchen never cooks!
We decided to set out and find the best
places to eat in the area.
Our Secret Scoffers never reveal their
identity, always buy their own food and if
they have issues they raise them there and
then.
*This is not a sponsored or paid for article
and each venue we review is not aware
that PadPall Scoffers are reviewing them.

THEY MIGHT SEEM USELESS, BUT THESE
8 BODY PARTS ACTUALLY HAVE
SURPRISINGLY COOL FUNCTIONS
AS THE ANCIENT GREEKS USED TO SAY, "KNOW THYSELF."
It probably was meant a little more philosophically that we're choosing to interpret it, but learning about
how your body is put together and why is some seriously fun stuff We've all marvelled at our fingers
and toes, wrinkling into prunes in the bath. We've all stared at that weird fleshy appendage hanging
down in the back of our throats. We've all known someone - or been that someone - with an emergency
appendectomy. "It's fine," they say, "the appendix is completely useless anyway."But our bodies are
amazing machines, and, while we may not need some of its features any more, there's very little in our
anatomies with no purpose whatsoever. And about those things we don't need any more? They're evidence
of where we've been - and that we continue to evolve even to this day.
29
32
YOUR APPENDIX
Turns out the human appendix - that weird structure attached to
the colon that seemed to have little purpose but to occasionally
inflame - isn't just an evolutionary vestige after all.Recent
research has found that it might play a key role in our immune
systems by harbouring good bacteria that help fight infection.
Good work, little buddy!
THE EXTRA EAR
HOLE
If you look carefully at your ears, you might notice you have a
tiny additional hole just where the helix meets the side of your
head. This is called the preauricular sinus, and only a tiny
percentage of people have them. It's actually a rare birth defect
first documented by Van Heusinger in 1864.We don't know why
we have them - but evolutionary biologist Neil Shubin of the
University of Chicago and the Field Museum of Natural History
has hypothesised that they're an evolutionary remnant of fish
gills.
JUNK DNA
We have a lot of DNA in our body that, until recently, didn't
really seem to do anything. It doesn't create proteins, and it
seems to make us more susceptible to damage and disease - but
it makes up a significant part of our genome. If it wasn't
somehow beneficial, evolution would have at least started
phasing out this so-called "junk DNA," but that hasn't
happened.Recently, researchers may have figured out what it's
for - it plays a critical role in holding out genome together by
ensuring that chromosomes bundle correctly inside the nuclei if
our cells. Without that function, cells die - so it seems like "junk"
DNA is not so junky after all."Useless" immune cellsWe have
these immune cells in our bodies that nobody could figure out
what they were for.It was a real head-scratcher, because these
"silenced" lymphocytes are present in our bodies in large
numbers and only seemed to emerge to attack the body in
autoimmune diseases. It looks like a liability, right? But it ain't. It
turns out that the cells represent a new type of immunity that
we didn't know about before - they attack dangerous infections
that otherwise evade the immune system by disguising
themselves as part of the body. A pretty useful line of defence to
have, wouldn't you say?
30
33
GUT BACTERIA
There's a reason that experts have recently suggested that we
all start referring to ourselves using the royal "we".In recent
years, research has found that the microbes that live inside of
us, especially our intestines (our microbiome), are symbiotic -
and they have far more of an effect on our lives than we
realised. They have been implicated in such illnesses as multiple
sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, cancer and chronic fatigue
syndrome, which means they may be pretty danged important.
But they also seem to play a role in regulating other things, too
- such as our appetites, and even our moods.
INTERSTITIUM
Turns out we may have an organ wrapped around our other
organs, and it's been hiding in plain sight for all this time.
The newly classified organ is called the interstitium, and
previously scientists had just thought it was relatively
unremarkable, relatively solid tissue to fill the space between
our organs. It's actually filled with fluid, supported by a collagen
lattice, and it helps protect our organs from external shocks as
we move around, much like air cushions in running shoes.
THE PINK BIT IN THE EYE
If you look in the mirror, you'll see a little pink bit of conjunctival tissue in the corner of your eye. This is called the plica semilunaris,
and these days its primary function is to help with tear drainage and eyeball mobility. But once upon a time it was a nictitating
membrane - what we call a third eyelid, a translucent eyelid that can be drawn over the eye to keep it moist and protected while
maintaining a measure of vision. If you have a cat or a dog, you may have seen their third eyelid while they're sleeping. Humans and
most other primates don't need this feature any more, so it evolved away a long time ago - but we still have that vestigial lump of
tissue.Last year, doctors reported the second known case of a nictitating membrane in a human. A nine-year-old girl had a persistent
membrane across her left eye that could not be retracted. It was surgically excised, and her eye underneath was fine.

Series | Season 8 is out NOW
Homeland is an American spy thriller television series
developed by Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa based on
the Israeli series Prisoners of War, which was created
by Gideon Raff. The series stars Claire Danes as Carrie
Mathison, a Central Intelligence Agency officer
with bipolar disorder, and Damian Lewis as Nicholas
Brody, a U.S. Marine Corps Scout Sniper. Mathison had
come to believe that Brody, who was held captive by
al-Qaeda as a prisoner of war, was "turned" by the enemy
and poses a threat to the United States. The series
focuses on a storyline that evolves from this premise,
together with Mathison's ongoing covert work.

Homeland is an addictive,
politically resonant spy
thriller and compelling
character study that benefits
from superb performances.
As the stakes get
higher, Homeland remains a
roller coaster ride of tension,
and Claire Danes is riveting
in one of the best written
thrillers on television.
Great writing, unexpected
twists and turns. Fantastic
performances by Damien

What gives Homeland its
unsettling edge is the sense

dark corners of an endless

Two stand out derby fixtures the Manchester Derby on 7th and the Merseyside
event on the 16th The Champions League has the second legs of the February
round of sixteen games turns with the round of sixteen 10/11th and 17/18th
Liverpool v Athletico Madrid on the 11th could be an epic the Spaniards played
brilliantly at home will they be able to do the same at Anfield ?
The new season starts with the Australian Grand Prix 13-15th and the following
week moves on to Bahrain 20-22nd can Lewis Hamilton land yet another
championship?
The Six Nations comes to its climax on the weekend of 7/8 March pick of which
should be England v Wales on Saturday and then the grand finale on 14th if
everything goes down to the wire the ultimate game France v Ireland could be a
chance for Les Bleus to land their first championship in a long time in terms of the
rugby they have played thus far they would thoroughly deserve it.
The climax of the Womens t20 world cup it reaches its final on 8 March. England
men have a two match test series in Sri Lanka a notoriously tricky place to get
results starting on 19th and 27th.
The biggest event in the National Hunt calendar the Cheltenham Festival from
Tuesday 10th until Friday 13th the two big races the Champion Hurdle on the 10th
could fall to the Nicky Henderson trained Epatante though the Gordon Elliott runner
Coeur Sublime at around 20/1 will carry my money. On Friday the Gold Cup is a
vintage renewal the forgotten horse in the line up is Monalee available currently at
25/1 which looks way too big.
TTwo of the big one week races Paris-Nice starts on the 8th and starting on the
11th Tirrano-Adriatico these two events show who is on his metal early season. On
21st possibly the hardest one day race on the calendar Milano-San Remo having
holidayed around the finish area the hills are unbelieveable to drive around let
alone cycle up and down them.

Dealing with uninvited change is often difficult and painful.
But whatever change you, or someone you’re caring for, are
dealing with, how you cope with that change will have an impact
on your future.
“Enable”is a voluntary support group which has been
in existence for over 2 years and is the brainchild of
Personal Trainer and Sports Therapist Ray Daniel.
Ray, who owns Remedio Clinic, lives in Turre and
works throughout the local area. The idea for a
support group has come as a result of Ray´s
experience of working with clients who come to him
for treatment after experiencing any one of range of
difficulties.
Recovering from surgery for joint replacements,
having a stroke or heart attack developing arthritis,
coping with sight or hearing difficulties, living with
Parkinson´s, and even different forms of dementia are
all circumstances which can act to bring about a
fundamental change to our lives.
Something which affects our physical or mental health
almost inevitably impacts on our level of
independence.
Importantly, changes like these do not only affect the
actual person concerned. Daily life can also alter
drastically for those who care for them – more often
than not, that is a close relative or family member
facing the challenges of living with a life changing
condition, or being a caregiver to a loved one in that
position, can be physically, emotionally, and mentally
draining. It also has the potential to be incredibly
isolating and it is only when we are placed in that
position ourselves that we truly understand how
really tough things can be.
At Enable, Ray, assisted by Yoga and Pilates teacher
Sue, seeks to address some of these issues and to
offer support to people in this situation. By
undertaking gentle physical and mental exercises and
games, both physical fitness and mental health can be
improved over time.
Also, importantly, caregivers can either come along
and join in, talk with others in the same position as
they are, or simply take an hour for themselves
knowing that their loved ones are being looked after
in a safe, secure and stimulating environment. The
town hall of Turre kindly provides space in the rooms
alongside the town football ground, where Enable´s
weekly sessions are held Local
businesses have donated supplies for chair based
exercises and other support groups have been
incredibly generous in helping to publicise Enable´s
work and by providing exercise equipment for people
to use.
Enable´s physical activities and exercises focus on
building strength, balance and flexibility. Mental
games help to sustain and develop levels of memory,
reaction and multi-tasking capability. Together these
activities help to build back up confidence and
independence. Most of all, a session at Enable is fun
and the activities always result in laughter and a feel
good factor for the people who attend. At Enable we
know that no matter how challenging or difficult your
situation may be, doing activities where you are
laughing with others helps you deal with it. Enable is
completely free to attend and open to all nationalities.
Language is NOT a barrier.
If you would like to know more, or know of someone
who might benefit by attending, why not come along
to one of the m eetings. We can assure you of a warm
welcome.
Enable meets every Wednesday, from 11.30 to 12.30 at
the rooms alongside Turre Football ground.

MEDICAL CANNABIS
A M O N T H B Y M O N T H G U I D E T O T H E

Medical Cannabis For Pets
In past issues we´ve discussed how medical marijuana is an option for people suffering from various ailments and
seeking relief and how it works within our bodies but did you know that like us humans, animals also have
an ECS system and medical cannabis can provide positive benefits for our pets as well ? From seizures to anxiety,
arthritic problems to pain relief CBD oil can serve as an alternative medication to help treat symptoms so, what are
the benefits of cannabis oil for our furry friends?
CBD oil works in the same way with our pets as it does with us humans and can be used to treat seizures, nausea,
stress, anxiety, arthritis, back pain, symptoms of cancer and digestion problems and it´s the relief provided from
the cannabinoids in the marijuana plant that interacts with their endocannabinoid system in exactly the same way.
Unlike traditional pharmaceutical medication medical cannabis has no life-threatening side effects and as long as
the oil contains the legal amount of THC and dosed correctly it will not leave your pet high or sedated.
As with all cannabis based products whether it be for human consumption or our beloved four legged friends it is
important to do your own research, trust your source and buy tested products from a reputable supplier.
CBD Natural offer a complete pet care range for both dogs and cats which are especially formulated containing a
CBD and a variety of other essential vitamins and nutrients to keep our pets alert, active and in peak condition.
Cibapet CBD Oil For Dogs
Cibapet CBD oil for dogs harnesses the groundbreaking science of CBD to provide your dog with relief and
relaxation. By combining CBD with fish oil, vitamin E, protein, and fibre, Cibapet CBD oil is tailor-made to support
robust health for your dog, without any worrying side effects.
In addition to the power of CBD, the inclusion of fish oil, vitamin E, protein, and fibre simultaneously supports your
dog’s skin and coat health, digestive health, and energy levels. Pets can be just as sensitive to stimuli as humans, so
it’s important to use the best CBD Oil for dogs.

49
Cibapet CBD Oil For Cats
The benefits of CBD oil for cats among numerous others, are all contained in the Cibapet CBD oil formula. This oil
is stronger than the CBD pastilles, and is best suited for cats that require a regular dose of the supplement.
Despite its potency, the oil is completely non-psychoactive and is a convenient way of providing your cat with the
many benefits of CBD.
Cibapet CBD Pastilles For Dogs
CBD pastilles for dogs take the groundbreaking research behind CBD and optimise it for your dog’s unique
physiology. Each package contains 55 flavour-enhanced tablets containing 3.2mg of CBD each, which can be
administered to your dog daily. They contain vitamins, protein, calcium, folic acids, iron, potassium, andmagnesium
to provide a healthy dose of supportive ingredients to keep them feeling their best.
Cibapet CBD Pastilles For Cats
Your cat deserves the best, no matter the breed or age. Cibapet CBD pastilles are taste enhanced tablets
containing beneficial CBD and other supportive ingredients to relieve your cat's pain or discomfort, and help
them relax whilst supporting their natural functions. Each pastille is enhanced with flavour and vitamins to offer
your cat a pleasurable consumption experience, without any concerning side effects.
Tablets can be administered daily to support overall health and wellness. Each package of Cibapet CBD pastilles
comes with 100 tablets containing 1.3mg of CBD each.
Dosage
Dosage guides are given by the manufacturer however, as with humans it is not a case of one strength suits all,
also, not all pets are the same and what suits one may not not suit another. If you are ever in doubt and need
advice, call into the shop in Huercal Overa.
Be your “pet's best friend” Try Cibapet today and your pet will thank you tomorrow!

CORONAVIRUS & POLITICS
WHAT SHOULD CORONAVIRUS TEACH
POLITICIANS?
For once it appears that those who seek to run our world are
singing from the same hymn sheet, all are seemingly agreed
that the Coronavirus is a very virulent beast and is
a real danger to health.
As we stand the virus is having a mortality rate of around
two percent of those infected. To put this into perspective
this is around double the number who die in a standard
influenza epidemic (WHO figures) were the virus to migrate
worldwide this would be a massive number of deaths.
What is obvious to the World Health Organisation but
seemingly not to individual governments and politicians
is that a coordinated response is required, whilst there is
a general agreement that those who get infected should
isolate themselves as far as possible from others, some
administrations have gone far further by blocking travel
and effectively shutting life down in those areas where
infection clusters have occurred.
The Canutes amongst world leaders who seem to
somehow believe that shutting a border will contain a
microscopic virus need to listen to the science.
52
55
IT'S NOT REALLY FAIR
GAME... IS IT?!
While such a policy may be possible to enforce in an
authoritarian regime (and I acknowledge certainly seems to
be slowing the virus spread down in China) whether it will
work in the Me,Me,Me society in the West is a lot more
dubious .
If the policy of isolation is to be the chosen one then the
powers that be have to convince the general population
that they will not as individuals lose out because of it
and as yet that is an argument they have failed or not
even tried to make.
I find it absolutely incredible that Western politicians are
willing to cancel large mass events such as the Milan
football derby is being played behind closed doors when
such an event takes place in the open air but the same
authority have put no restrictions on crowded commuter
vehicles moving thousands of people into the same city all
of which are enclosed within those vehicles. Nor have they
closed down areas where thousands of people daily mix to
work in enclosed spaces.
It is certainly acceptable for governments to say stay in
isolation, but if they do not put in safeguards for those
who do so in terms of stopping employers from
disciplining employees who do as they are told, or
ensure there is no financial penalty for effectively
listening to the expert advice, then I can only see such
a policy failing very quickly. And what about such things
as food for these people, which is never mentioned.
In the end though it is perhaps most telling that the WHO
have not declared this a pandemic and commenting
about China have pointed out that although 80000 cases
are a massive number there are around 1.4 billion people
who live there and are not infected. Yes they have raised
the danger to its highest threat level but they keep called
for a concerted response something which is being
ignored by the politicians .
As the great John Lennon said “Imagine there’s no
countries, it isn’t hard to do “ and perhaps this is the real
way that this crisis can be overcome but the chances of
concerted action is between nil and less when the likes of
the Donald to paraphrase says if we (meaning the US)
have a problem we will deal with it then until such time
carry on as usual - you have a fair idea that the WHO is
wasting its breathe.
For the rest of us perhaps we all need to step back, take a
deep breathe and not sneeze on anyone else!
