11. GRAMMAR PUNCH! – Phrasal verbs
Phrasal verbs are idiomatic expressions that are formed by a verb and one or two
prepositions. This combination of words acquires a new meaning.
Examples:
My sister was acting up, so my mom grounded her.
I blacked out because I didn’t eat breakfast.
Editors feed off writer’s ideas.
Phrasal verb Meaning Example
Bring up Raise from a child. My aunt brought up her daughter on her own.
Grow up Become an adult. I was born in Houston though I grew up in Chicago.
Come up with Create/Invent. I don’t know how fast he comes up with ideas.
Get into
Become/Get
involved.
If I don’t want to get into trouble, I should not use my
cellphone during class.
Take off Remove. Take off your shoes before you get in your bed.
Break out Develop suddenly. She broke out in a cold sweat.
Act out Perform. My sister acts out the tales for our kids.
Drop off Deliver/Unload. Can you drop this package off at my aunt’s house?
On the other hand...
Get away Escape. The pirate is trying to get away with the treasure.
Turn down Diminish in volume. Turn the music down, I can’t hear you.
