This year’steam consisted of SMG ManagingEditor Trampas Swanson, DeputyEditor Clint Steele, PhotographersVictoria Perez, and Mitch Holloway.We had to honor to be joinedduring the event by PMCI’s UKbasedManagement team ofPublisher Nigel Streeter and EditorBill Thomas. With the band alltogether, it was time to take onSHOT SHOW 2020!MIXING IT UPPrior to the start of the SHOT Show events, members of theSwanson Media Group had the opportunity to represent theirsister company, Swanson Training Group (STG). Instructors,Trampas Swanson and Clint Steele were invited to present theUSCCA’s Countering the Mass Shooter Threat class on the Sundayat a local Las Vegas training center prior to Range Day. This eighthourcourse focuses on countering the false political narrativessurrounding such events as well as some simple, yet effectivemethods to mitigate such tragedies. This training packagewas presented to a small group of local Las Vegas securityprofessionals, firearms trainers, and 2nd Amendment advocates.While this added to the week’s workload, it did manageto set the tone perfectly for our writers to get focused on themission ahead!RANGE DAYThe next morning would start just before 0700 HRS as themembers of the PMCI team loaded up and made the 30-minutedrive to the range in Boulder City for the day. Since this year’steam was smaller than it has been in the past, we decided tostick together to cover the 1.2-mile wide event. Before gettingstarted, the group took a few minutes to have a brief teamhuddle to remind everyone to be safe and focus on the task at hand.Over the next eight hours, the team got hands-on with someof the latest and greatest weapons and ammunitions that thefirearms community had to offer for 2020. Test firing severalnew models of handguns, suppressors, full-auto machine gunsand even went long-range, shooting some sniper rifles out toabout 800 meters. Take it from a one very proud Deputy Editor,the PMCI team really impressed the vendors with their depth of
knowledge and skillsets when handling firearms. When it cametime to recharge the batteries the team managed to grab a biteto eat from some of the best food trucks in the Las Vegas area.Highlights from the day included getting up close and personalwith Diamondback Firearms’ latest innovation. The DBX57, this“carbine-style” pistol is chambered in 5.7x28mm. At an overalllength of 25 inches with the brace extended and weighing in ata minuscule 3.7 pounds, this pistol just screams truck gun or theperfect companion while on a low-profile protection mission.Since we are discussing the 5.7x28mm chambering, anotherhighlight of range day was the chance to check out Ruger’s newoffering in the same caliber. The Ruger 5.7 pistol was everythingwe hoped it would be. When asked to compare the Ruger 5.7 tothe OG of the 5.7 world, the FN 5.7. Trampas made the commentthat comparing the grip surface of the Ruger to the FN was likecomparing the grips of a 1911 to that of a Glock 21. The Rugervariant was slimmer and more accommodating versus a bulky andboxy feel of the FN variant in the hand. Other standouts of theday included the new Glock model 44 chambered in .22LR andanother Ruger product, the Lite Rack LCP II also in .22LR. Staytuned to future issues of PMCI for in-depth reviews by the PMCIteam in the coming months.THE FLOORWith Range day over, the real work began for the team.Throughout the SHOT Show floor, attendees could walk throughthe vendor booths looking at tremendous displays of firearms andaccessories. This provided them with an opportunity to conduct“hands-on” inspections and discuss the products with industryrepresentatives. Some of the products would be available theweek of the show, others would be available at some point in thecoming weeks or months. Some you could even find currently onthe shelves of your local store. Others, it would take mountains ofpaperwork and even bigger piles of cash to purchase.One of the most impressive events of the week took placeon Wednesday when the one-day New Vendors Showcase wasopened. This event took place on the 5th floor of the conventioncenter and as the name implies was only open to vendors,who had never shown at the show before. This showcase hada different feel from the rest of the event. Most of the time atSHOT, the vendors are a bit standoffish, now that is in no way toinsinuate that they are rude, they just tend to stay in their boothsand only engage folks who walk up and start conversations withthem. The New Vendors Showcase, on the other hand, had thefeel of a county fair or local bazaar. These vendors only had oneday to make connections that could benefit their company and itsproducts for the rest of the entire year. These eager vendors wereengaging as soon as you came close to their spaces.One such new vendor that immediately struck up aconversation with me was Elle Rueger of Soledier Socks. Thiscompany was founded a little over two years ago, after talkingwith a family friend who had just returned from a deploymentoverseas. This friend explained how the socks that people sent incare packages were true godsends. Items that not only brightenedthe soldier’s days but, helped them to remain effective whileconducting operations. What came about from that conversationwas the idea for Soledier Socks. When a customer purchases apair of Soledier Socks, a pair of specially designed “Thomas” socksare delivered to an active-duty soldier in the U.S. military. When Iexplained to Elle that I had been an Infantry soldier myself and Iunderstood just what a pair of good socks can mean, she handedme a pair of the “Thomas” socks with an invitation to give them atry for myself. Well, I can tell you right here and now that the lastday at SHOT, when my feet were at their worst. Those “Thomas”socks were just what the doctor ordered and helped me to finishthe week strong.
