VE DAY 75 TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS 

Sudbury celebrated the end of WW2 in 1945 with an ecstatic, impromptu outpouring of joy and 

relief. On May 8th a band of small boys with biscuit tin drums and whistles marched around the 

town centre. Young Americans from the 486th bomb group based on Sudbury airfield, climbed onto 

the White Horse statue on the front of the North Street pub to put on a rodeo show. In the evening 

the local searchlight that had scanned the sky for German bombers was moved to flood light the 

front of St Peter’s where crowds gathered to sing and dance. 

This year on bank holiday Friday, May 8th – 75 years later - the town will be celebrating again. 

The official commemoration begins at 3pm in front of the town hall, following the traditional bank 

holiday plant market. The Heritage Centre in the Town Hall will be open from 10.30am to 4.30pm 

to share its collection of war memorabilia and there will be a perfect Selfie attraction for the day 

only. Visitors will be able to try on WW2 tin helmets worn by German, British and American troops.

At this time of year, a very popular treat is chocolate, 

especially in the form of Easter eggs. However pet 

owners should be cautious, especially with dogs. 

Chocolate in certain forms and quantities can make 

animals very unwell and can sometimes be fatal. The 

toxic component in chocolate is something called 

‘Theobromine’, which is used as a drug in certain 

medical conditions but can be fatal in excessive 

amounts. Many people have heard that chocolate is 

poisonous to animals but a common misconception is 

that they have to eat a lot. This does vary according 

to the type of chocolate and its theobromine 

concentration, and also the variation between each 

individual. Therefore if there is a possibility that your 

pet has consumed any chocolate then it is essential to 

act fast and contact your vet.

Is it possible for friends to be kind to be cruel? 

What happens when good friends are kind to the 

point where, if it isn’t actually kindness that can kill, 

it can certainly have a negative effect on those it’s 

supposed to benefit? 

The effortlessly successful, charming couple Anthea 

and Richard are generous to their friends both old and 

new and, over a period of 12 years, we see just how 

generous they are in a series of social gatherings in 

their back garden; a fireworks party, a summer lunch, 

a Christmas gathering and finally a birthday bash for 

their daughter. 

A combination of jealousy, envy, inadequacy and 

unrequited love all afflict their assembled friends 

whilst Anthea and Richard proceed serenely 

on, seemingly oblivious to the angst they are 

inadvertently causing, as the years roll by. 

Joking Apart is directed by Mark Scanlon who was 

responsible for the successful Ladies Day and Ladies 

Down Under and was recently seen in the SDS 

pantomime. Mark says he is delighted to be directing 

the first Ayckbourn play from SDS for several years.

THE TASTE OF SUDBURY, the town’s fantastic annual 

event, held in the centre of Sudbury, is all about 

celebrating, promoting and showcasing the very best 

producers, restaurants and chefs that we are so lucky 

to have in this region. 

This year we are delighted to be sponsored by 

Hollow Trees Farm and we’ll see the return of their 

lovely ‘farmyard’ where children can meet and feed 

the turkeys and enjoy a whole range of educational 

activites. The second kitchen theatre, run by the ICE 

Chefs and KSL Kitchens will be back too with free 

children’s activities taking place all day including 

Brownie making and Bread baking. 

The fabulous main kitchen theatre will be back 

with an amazing line up of some of region’s very best 

chefs including award winning baker, Will Wooster 

of Wooster’s Bakery, Greig Young, Head Chef of The 

Northgate in Bury St Edmunds, James Carn, Suffolk 

Chef of the Year in 2016 and Lee Cooper of The 

Ixworth Hotel. The award winning team from Hollow 

Trees Farm Butchery will be running a butchery 

masterclass and we may well be making sausages too! 

Almost seventy stalls will be filling Market Hill and 

St Peters on June 14th selling a whole range of top 

quality produce including culinary, medicinal and 

aromatic fresh herbs, locally shot venison, wild boar 

sausage rolls, Suffolk strawberries and raspberries, 

award winning sourdoughs, homemade pates 

and terrines, locally distilled Suffolk gins, beautiful 

macarons, Suffolk sausages, jams, marinades, 

conserves and freshly baked cakes. There will also 

be a number of quirky vans and horseboxes selling 

Mac and Cheese, Greek Souvlaki, Crispy Duck
