Kremer III, Editor Banks are usually a place where one goes to deposit money, sometimes in the form of accumulated loose change that has been collecting in a jar or some other receptacle over time. It is not often that people end up discovering that the loose change is far more valuable than its face value. But, at Old Plank Trail Community Bank in Mokena, that is exactly what people came to find out Friday, March 13. Ron Beckstrom, owner of Golden Rule Coins, was on hand to offer people free appraisals of their coin collections. Beckstrom said he began collecting coins as a child. Then, after spending 25 years in the corporate world, he decided to see if he could turn his avocation into a vocation. “In about 2006, I started working with banks in Illinois and Wisconsin,” said Beckstrom, who is a member of the Community Bankers Association of Illinois and the Wisconsin Bankers associations. “I guess the reason I did that was I figured if I’m not a collector and I have some coins that grandpa gave me, and there are some coins that I don’t know what they are, what they’re worth, where to go, who to trust, where would I have confidence that I was dealing with someone who’s reputable. Kremer III/22nd Century Media confidence in banks, and that they’re going to refer them to someone who is diligent and ethical and conscientious and all that stuff.” Beckstrom prides himself on being truthful and offering fair prices to his customers, which he has been doing for the past 14 years. Judy Stoll, of Mokena, came to have the collection of her late husband, Allan, looked at. Allan passed away two years ago. Judy said that he “fooled around” with coin collecting, and after he passed, Judy was left with his collection, which began in the early 1960s. The couple was rolling up pennies to deposit at the bank when Allan noticed an unusual penny and decided to go back through all the previously rolled pennies, about $30 worth, to look for more. “He enjoyed collecting [coins],” Judy said. “It took up a lot of his time, mostly by himself. So, now this stuff is in a safety deposit box, and young kids don’t seem to be interested in things like collections. So I was just curious; I don’t know what to do with it.” Judy said she doubted the collection would be worth anything but wanted to check just in case she ends up sitting on a small fortune. Terry Prokop, of Mokena, showed up with a wooden box filled with what he hoped might be full of treasure. And, as it turned out, there were many silver coins that Beckstrom purchased from Prokop — to the tune of more than $800. Prokop said he plans to use that money to help offset some medical expenses related to a heart transplant he had, which requires him to make regular check-ups. “It costs me money every time I go,” he said. “I’m 73 now. I’m running out of money. So, I said, ‘Well, let me see if I can get rid of this.’” Prokop said he has been collecting coins for 52 years, as long as he has been married. His wife got him started, as she worked in gas stations and would come across all sorts of interesting coins while she worked. One of the coins Prokop brought in appeared to be an ancient coin of unknown origin, so Beckstrom advised Prokop to take the mysterious coin to a coin dealer in downtown Chicago to get a more accurate appraisal. “This could be worth a lot of money,” Prokop said. And although rare coins are valuable precisely because they are rare, sometimes Beckstrom comes across some hidden gems. Beckstrom said that one time while he was at a bank in Wisconsin a couple came in with a rubber tub of coins that had been acquired as part of an inheritance. In that tub contained what turned out to be a whopper of a find. “[I was] looking through the tub, and there was a little bit of value here and there, and then I was like, ‘OK, I have to sit down for this one,” Beckstrom said. What he discovered was the couple had a $20 gold piece from 1904 that had very low mintage and very few still left out in the world. “That coin wound up being worth about $35,000,” Beckstrom said. “...
