Summary
of
problem
Astrology has a number of belief systems, its the belief of a
relationship between astronomical phenomena and events
or characteristic of the human world. Astrology is rejected
by the scientific community as there is no evidence for
having explanatory power in the universe.
The theme of the research on this topic would be how
accurate astrology is, to an extent and if it really affects us
and describes who we are. My research will also focus on
the current trends and the influence of astrology in
today’s society.
The first issue would be the claims of astrology being
accurate or untrue. Looking at two sides of the argument,
the first view would be astrology is accurate however, it has
been ruined by modern psychology. Astrology has been
around for a long time since the 3rd century BC and the
1st century CE. Today, modern psychology has portrayed
astrology as something that simply sounds like affirmations
of what people want to hear about themselves and think
about the world. The approach psychologists
take nowadays has polluted modern astrology with
watered-down interpretations too. The second view
is that astrology is not real as it simply doesn't have
any scientific claims to back it up.
The second issue would be Astrology’s influence in today’s
society. Millennials are one of the most affected by the
presence of astrology. Currently, in a data-driven era,
they find comfort and insight in astrology, even if they
don’t believe in it. There is a widespread trend of memes,
information on the internet about astrology, our personal
birth charts and how they may affect or describe us. From
my research, people tend to turn to astrology in times
of stress. A social cognitive scientist sees astrology as a
cultural and psychological phenomenon, not a scientific
one. Millennials and Gen x have been one of the most
stressful generations, thus they are very interested
in astrology.
After further research I came across an article about
what an astrologer think of astrology, she made a
very important point. She said,” As an astrologer, I
truly do not care if astrology is real.” Astrology is—
fundamentally—a practise in empathy. Astrology is
used to understand people as beings and how we act
isn’t always how we feel. Also, just because feelings
aren’t quantifiable in a scientific way it doesn’t mean
that astrology can’t change someone’s life for the
better. Practising astrology sparks self-awareness.
After reviewing and reading extensively on my topic,
I think my discussion can go forward in either of these
two possible paths.
The benefits of Astrology: How it can motivate people
and help people, afterall, there is this quote,” What
you believe, you can achieve” and in general when
people understand themselves better, they know
what they should do next.
Astrology as a form of entertainment: Another
important thing is not to see astrology as an overly
important thing or having a fixed mindset on it, after
all, astrology is just a guidance for people and you are
still in charge of your own choices or mindsets.
