CORONAVIRUS CAUSING CHAOS

whats on

at the

"FEDdy"

Jag the Joker

$300

It might only be a tiny little

virus, but its impacts are

far reaching, even for our

tiny town with many large

events usually held at this

time of year being cancelled

in line with new Government

guidelines, and this is going

to have a huge knock on

effect for the community

groups involved, as many

were major fundraisers for

the relevant groups.

Cancellations so far

include the very popular

WOODGATE EASTER FAIR

which was CANCELLED this

week, along with the Childers

Orchid Clubs hugely popular

EASTER CENT SALE and their

major AUTUMN ORCHID

SHOW which should have

been held last week in

the Isis Cultural Centre.

Although these events didnt

have a massive impact for

the residents, the panic

buying that ensued has

gripped the town probably

has affected all residents.....

it started with TOILET ROLLS

and has itself escalated like

a PANDEMIC itself, with the

speed at which this spread.

Panic buying was first

reported around March 3rd

in Australia with toilet paper

rationing and by March

6, CNN reported that the

CHILDERS AUTO SPARES

Friendly Service

and

Helpful Advice

phenomenon of panic buying

toilet paper had gone global.

Described as herd behaviour

it didnt take much for this

to take hold and after calls

to help the elderly and

disabled, WOOLWORTHS

took the unprecidented

steps to introduce a

dedicated seniors hour to

help our older residents

and the disabled, shop.

Lets hope that this virus runs

its course quickly before they

introduce rationing books.

PRINTING OF NEXT CHITCHAT

There are very few printers around Australia that web print, which is the way

newspapers and the Chitchat are printed, and so the Chitchat is forced to get

printed in Sydney (why it takes ages to get it back after printing). Following a call

from our printers this week, the printers have had so many jobs cancelled from

businesses that have had to close, that they may not be able to afford to continue

to keep their doors open during this crisis, which may see us not being able to

physically print a paper edition until matters improve.

We will however try to go to print providing firstly we have a printer, and

secondly that OUR advertisers continue to support us with advertising,

because without advertisers there is no Chitchat.

Either way, we will continue to bring out an online e-chitchat.

As you can understand, with all events being cancelled at least until May

and possibly longer, we are going to be a little short of news and photos,

so if you have anything that you think readers may enjoy, be it a joke, recipe,

photos (that you have permission to use) etc, and any club news about

how you guys are continuing to support your groups now that

you cant physically get together.

chitchatnotices@hotmail.com

Isis District Historical Society,

Treasure Heather Parry, has

celebrated 28 yrs of service.

The inaugural meeting to

set up an historical society

in Childers was held in 1975

but had to wait until 1983

to truly get off the ground

when the Isis Central Mill

Sugar Company donated

land in Taylor Street to house

a complex. This was the

start of an ongoing project to

explore the history of sugar

in the Isis.

Many people have donated

their time and energy to

develop the IDHS including

Treasurer Heather Parry.

Alwyn Harrip talked Heather

Childers Chitchat - The Best Little Newspaper in Town

twenty eight years service

into attending her first

meeting in 1992 where

she became Treasurer

and Heather has held that

position since. In her 28

years as Treasurer Heather

has seen many changes.

Heather remembers a small

band of enthusiast members

who worked hard to add to

the buildings and collections

visitors now enjoy. The

life members board is

almost a history of Childers

in itself; June Robinson

(Daniels), John Bunn, Alwyn

Harrip, Jack Harney, Brian

Bouchardt, Wallace and Joan

Anderson and Heather who

was granted Life Membership

in 2008.

For many years the complex’s

open days were not only a

great fun day but were also

very successful at raising

funds. Many of the old skills

were displayed from sheep

shearing and chain saw

demonstrations to delicious

damper sampling, dripping

with golden syrup. Photos

show large crowds enjoying

games and demonstrations.

In 1993 cattle brands were

burnt into the split rail fence

from many of the pioneering

families who settled the Isis

District. These brands are

still visible on the fence as

you enter the complex.

Heather remarks that she

has seen two mayor changes

in her years as Treasurer;

insurance and the digital

world. Insurance is now a

mayor cost which puts many

institutions under financial

strain and with a cost

which rises every year. The

digital world, however, has

changed history research

beyond what anyone could

have imagined in 1992.

Photos are now stored

digitally and cannot be lost

or destroyed once they are

scanned and catalogued

and history research can

now be done by anyone

with access to a computer.

Queensland State Library

and the National Library

continue adding to their

digital collections, increasing

the scope of online research

more and more.

Heather still prefers to

maintain the society’s

account ledgers manually

with beautiful handwriting

previous generations

practiced daily at school, but

which has now been lost also

due to the use of computers

and digital devices. As

Heather states she is “happy

as long as we are financial”

therefore IDHS has plans to

bring back the fun open days

of the past. Giving families an

insight into the past.

Meetings are held the 2nd

Monday of the month, 9am

at the Historical Complex in

Taylor and new members are

always welcome. Denise

Hi everyone,

Firstly I would like to thank

HOW DOES THE CRONAVIRUS AFFECT MY

HEALTH WHEN GETTING A MASSAGE?

Corona Virus. It’s on

everyone’s minds,

it’s all we are talking

about at the moment.

The recommendations

from the Australian

Government include

keeping personal

distance from one

another.

So, of course, receiving

a massage, or other

hands on treatment at

this time, is going against

this recommendation.

It is up to the individual

to assess their own

possible risk, or risk to

family members before

attending massage

appointments.

At the time of writing this

article, at least one of

the professional massage

associations has made

the recommendation

to cease all hands-on

treatment for the time

being, while others

have recommended

diligent infection control

procedures.

If you are concerned

whether it is safe at

present to get a massage,

please ask your massage

therapist what infection

control measures they

have in place to protect

yourself and themselves

from infection. It is not

about being alarmist, but

about thinking through

your decisions carefully

and being informed of

any risks.

Should you wish to carry

on life as usual at this

time, there are a few

things to remember. If

you have been unwell

recently, with signs or

symptoms of a cold or

flu, (or any other illness),

please do not attend a

massage appointment.

Massage when you are

unwell, at any time,

is not recommended.

If you have recently

been overseas, as a

simple precaution, defer

your next massage

appointment for a couple

of weeks, to ensure

everyone’s peace of

Childers Chitchat - The Best Little Newspaper in Town

CAN'T BUY YOUR FAVOURITE CLEANER during this crisis?

With panic buying clearing the shelves of all the

household cleaners, here are some old fashioned

cleaners that worked for our grandparents with not

huge cost...who knows, you may never go back to your

Ajax or Mr Muscle.

Some of the items in your pantry (like baking soda

and vinegar) work as effective all-purpose cleaners

and, even better, cost next to nothing. So the next time

you're staring down a big mess but you're out of your

favorite cleaning product, don't run to the store — try

one mixing up one of these DIY homemade cleaners

instead. These natural products will kick grime to the

curb and keep your wallet happy.

1. Scented All-Purpose Cleaner

What you'll need:

One part white vinegar

One part water

Lemon rind

Rosemary sprigs

Combine the above ingredients together, pour into

a spray bottle, shake, and then let infuse for a week

before using. Once done, you can use the natural

solution to remove hard water stains, clean trash cans,

wipe away wall smudges, and much more. Besides a

fresh scent, the lemon rind may help boost cleaning

power. Caution: Do not use acidic cleaners on granite,

as they will etch the stone.

2. Kitchen Cleaner and Deodorizer

What you'll need:

4 tablespoons baking soda

1 quart warm water

To clean kitchen counters, appliances, and the inside of

your refrigerator, all you need is baking soda. "It makes

a great deodorizer and can be used to shine stainless

steel sinks and appliances," says Carolyn Forte, director

of the Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab. To

deodorize surfaces, use the solution above or pour

baking soda straight from the box and into your drain

or garbage disposal to remove odors. To shine and

remove spots from stainless steel, make a paste of

baking soda and water. Apply it with a damp cloth and

rub gently in the direction of the metal’s grain. Rinse

and buff dry.

3. DIY Glass Cleaner

2 cups water

1/2 cup white or cider vinegar

1/4 cup rubbing alcohol 70% concentration

1 to 2 drops of orange essential oil for smell (optional)

The next time you need to wash your windows and

mirrors, combine these ingredients and pour them in a

spray bottle. Hint: Don't clean windows on a hot, sunny

day, because the solution will dry too quickly and leave

lots of streaks. For mirrors, spray the solution on a

paper towel or soft cloth first before wiping.

4. Last-Resort Clothing Stain Remover

What you'll need:

1 gallon hot water

1 cup powdered dishwasher detergent

1 cup regular liquid chlorine bleach, not ultra or

concentrate

Treat badly stained but washable white clothing by

mixing the above ingredients into a stainless steel,

plastic, or enamel bowl (not aluminum). Soak garment

for 15-20 minutes. If stain is still there, let it soak a bit

longer, then wash the item as usual.

5. Natural Heavy-Duty Scrub

What you'll need:

1/2 lemon

1/2 cup borax powder

Rust stains on porcelain or enamel sinks and tubs are

no match for this cleaner. Dip the lemon into the borax

and scrub the surface, then rinse. (This is not safe for

marble or granite.) Tip: You can find borax, a laundry

booster, in the detergent aisle or order it on Amazon.

6. DIY Grease Cleaner

What you'll need:

1/2 cup sudsy ammonia

Sudsy ammonia contains detergent that helps remove

tough grime. Mix 1/2 cup with enough water to fill a

one-gallon container. Then clean your oven racks, stove

hood, and grill by dipping a sponge into the solution

and wiping over the surface before rinsing with clear

water. You can also soak oven racks and grill grates

in the mixture directly, with a little extra ammonia if

they're particularly dirty.

Childers Chitchat - The Best Little Newspaper in Town

Homemade All-Purpose Cleaner

3/4 cup hydrogen peroxide.

1/2 cup distilled white vinegar.

1 teaspoon unscented liquid Castile soap.

10 drops tea tree oil.

20 drops lavender essential oil.

2 cups water.

Homemade Carpet Deodorizer

Combine baking soda and essential oil in a mason jar.

Cap and shake well to combine.

Remove cap and replace inner lid with construction

paper.

Secure rim and cut off excess construction paper.

Poke holes in the construction paper.*

Apply liberally to carpets.

Wait at least 1-2 hours.

Washing Up Liquid/Dish Soap

• 3 tbsp liquid Castile soap

• 2 cups warm water

• 2 tsp glycerine

• 2 tbsp. white vinegar

• 10 drops lavender essential oil

The lavender in this recipe makes the water smell

lovely, and also has anti-bacterial properties.

The scent doesn’t linger on the dishes, however.

Toilet Cleaner

• ¾ cup baking soda

• ¾ cup white vinegar

• 10 drops of tea tree oil

• 10 drops of lavender essential oils

Smells lovely and really scrubs even the most limescale

stained toilet bowls clean. As an added tip, pouring oil

around the bowl after cleaning can help prevent “things”

from sticking to the side…

Baking Soda: Baking soda is one of the most effective

cleaning ingredients available. This inexpensive

ingredient can be used to raise my favorite banana

bread and clean a toilet. Pretty amazing stuff! When

used as a homemade cleaner, baking soda absorbs

odors and scrubs away stains due to its abrasive

properties. I use Bob’s Red Mill Baking Soda for baking,

but go with the cheaper bulk bag of Arm & Hammer

for cleaning.

our birthday/ anniversary WISHES ARE always FREE

CONGRATULATIONS

As everyone knows, our local

pool has had a wonderful

makeover. With a cover being

added, removable walls and

the water being heated to a

lovely 28.5 degrees from the

new solar panels. Many have

been taking advantage of the

new updates especially our

local Aqua Zumba group who

have been loving the shaded

structure and beautiful water

temperatures and many

people are taking advantage

of the classes. This year

local Zumba instructor,

Summer, has again been a

part of this years council BE

ALIVE, BE ACTIVE classes

25

Angela and Sharron

with attendances peaking of

nearly 60 men and woman.

“This is the largest group we

have ever had participating

in the FREE council classes,

and numbers have remained

steady which is unusual as

once the weather cools a

little, so do our numbers.

It just goes to show that

people are loving the heated

pool”, theres even men

taking part in the classes.

There are quite a few

different aqua classes being

offered at the pool, as well as

swimming club, kids lessons

and fun nights. “We love

that the pool will be able to

be utilised all year around.

People can participate in

their aqua activities rain,

hail or shine. Aqua Zumba is

a great way to stay fit, have

fun and be part of a group of

fantastic people”. For more

information, you can contact

the pool for class times and

lessons available.

ON HOLD

My name is Rosemary

Pimm and I am

currently acting

as the Health

Promotion Officer

at BreastScreen

Queensland Wide Bay

Service (I am located

in Bundaberg).

If you are unfamiliar

with BreastScreen

Queensland, we offer

a FREE mammogram

every two years to

eligible women. Our

screening program is

specifically designed

to encourage women

aged 50-74 to attend,

as evidence suggests

that the benefits

of screening are

strongest in this

age group; however

women aged 40-49

and over 74 are also

eligible to attend.

We operate as a “well

women’s” service,

meaning that we do

not treat women who

have breast cancer

or who have breast

cancer symptoms, as

our focus is on early

detection of breast

cancer and reducing

lifestyle factors.

Appointments are

quick – you will be in

and out in no more

Come along

than 30 minutes and

each appointment

is one-on-one with

a female health

professional.

I am writing to advise

you that we are

now taking group

bookings at our

BreastScreen Wide

Bay Service and

thought you may be

interested in sharing

with members in

your group/club/

association (we

have identified

your contact

details through

the Bundaberg

C o m m u n i t y

Directory). A

group booking will

essentially allow any

number of females

over the age of 40 to

attend a screening

mammogram at

BreastScreen

together on the same

day and time (the

actual screening

appointment will still

be one on one with

the radiographer).

Booking a group

appointment with

BreastScreen is very

simple – all you need

There are many

benefits to booking

and attending a

group appointment

at BreastScreen

including:

• Attending

a group booking

with other familiar

women may bring a

more comfortable

and relaxed vibe,

helping to reduce

any anxiety about

having a mammogram.

• Ease of

scheduling an

appointment and

being able to

remind each other

of your upcoming

appointment.

• Carpooling

with

others

can eliminate

transportation

issues that some

women face getting

to appointments.

• Remembering

when you are due

for your next

mammogram is much

easier when you are

all due at the same

time.

• You can make

it a day out – have a

mammogram together

and then go out for

a coffee or lunch

date afterwards to

celebrate!

If you would like any

further information

on BreastScreen

or making a group

booking; or would

JOKE - Mick, from Dublin ,

appeared on the UK’s ‘Who

Wants To Be A Millionaire’

and towards the end of the

program had already won

£500,000.

“You’ve done very well so

far,” said Chris Tarrant, the

show’s presenter, “but for

One Million Pounds, you’ve

only got one life-line left,

phone a friend. Everything is

riding on this question. Will

you go for it?”

“Sure,” said Mick. “I’ll have a

go!”

“Which of the following birds

does NOT build its own nest?

• a) Sparrow

• b) Thrush

• c) Magpie

• d) Cuckoo?”

“I haven’t got a clue,” said

Mick, ”so I’ll use my last

lifeline and phone my friend

Paddy back home in Dublin .”

Mick called up his

mate, and told him the

circumstances and repeated

the question to him.

“Hell, Mick!” cried Paddy.

Woodgate Chitchat - The Best Little Newspaper in Town

“Dat’s simple. It’s a cuckoo.”

“Are you sure?”

“Of course I’m sure.”

Mick hung up the phone and

told Chris, “I’ll go with D:

Cuckoo as my answer.”

“Is that your final answer?”

asked Chris.

“Dat it is.”

There was a long, long pause

and then the presenter

screamed, “Cuckoo is the

correct answer! Mick, you’ve

won £1 Million!” The next

night, Mick invited Paddy to

their local pub to buy him a

drink.

“Tell me, Paddy? How in

Heaven’s name did you

know it was da Cuckoo that

doesn’t build its own nest?”

“Because everyone knows

the cuckooo lives in a clock!”
