How to avoid excessive fees with Spanish banks
Spanish banks are increasing the fees
that clients have to pay, in some cases
charges are in excess of 240 euros per
year. Find out what to do in order to
avoid the charges.
by MoneySaverSpain.com
Know what the charges are for your account
You may have a bank account that already comes with
a quarterly or yearly charge. Or your commission-free
account is no longer free. In either case you need to
know exactly what the applicable fees are now. Once you
have the figures, you can consider whether the service
warrants the cost.
There are several types of charges:
A flat rate charged regularly (eg every quarter),
regardless of how often you use your account. This is the
comisión de mantenimiento.
A rate per bank movement, payment or withdrawal,
normally in cents per movement (eg 0.50Q each). These
will be calculated and charged every month or quarter.
This is the comisión de administración.
A charge for individual services. These include debit and
credit card fees, bank transfers, cheque depositing, cash
withdrawals and more.
If you’re not sure what fees are applied on your account
check online, phone or visit your local branch.
Charges can soon add up. If you have to pay:
• A 10 euro monthly flat fee
• 8 movements per month at 0.50 cents each (4 cash
withdrawals and 4 direct debits)
• A 30 euro annual debit card and credit card fee for
each card
You’re looking at a total cost of 228 euros per year!
Not all clients have to pay bank fees
Banks want clients who are profitable, and their best
clients won’t pay any charges. In order to avoid fees a
number of thresholds are established that can include:
• Depositing a monthly wage or pension, subject to a
minimum
• Maintaining a minimum balance (this is normally a
daily minimum, not the average during the month)
• Using the credit card issued by the bank a minimum of
2 or more times a month or quarter
• Having several direct debits (your usual household
bills)
• Investing with the bank in products such as an
investment fund or a pension plan, subject to a
minimum amount
Some banks will require you to meet more criteria than
others, so once again you’ll need to check. If you think
you meet the criteria but are still being charged, get in
touch with your branch to query it.
8 THE MARKET PLACE
Negotiate
Although bank charges are fixed by each bank, there may be
some flexibility if you’ve been a good client for years. In order
to negotiate, and possibly ‘threaten’ with moving your account
elsewhere, it’s better to visit your branch rather than try over the
phone.
Most banks have special conditions for certain groups, such as
Spanish civil servants. Even though this won’t be your case it does
mean that exceptions exist.
If your account is flagged to not have any fees, it’s usual for the fee
to be taken from your account and then the operation reversed the
same day or up to 3 days later.
Avoid fees by planning ahead
When you know exactly what fees are levied and when, you can
take the necessary action to avoid paying some of them:
Plan your cash withdrawals to avoid ATM fees. Often if you
withdraw an amount over a set threshold the transaction is free.
Know which ATMs to avoid: if you use an ATM that doesn’t belong
to the same network that your bank belongs to, you’ll normally be
charged regardless of the amount you withdraw.
If you need to deposit a cheque, talk to the bank first. If you’re
thinking of investing with them, or overpaying on your mortgage,
they may waive the fees.
Avoid planned or unplanned overdrafts and always have enough
money in your account to meet your direct debits.
Opt for online correspondence rather than letters by post or SMS
messages (the latter options are normally charged).
Cancel your credit card and get a free one.
When you can’t resolve the issue
If your bank is adamant that you have to pay the fees, and you
don’t meet the criteria to avoid them, it might be time to find a new
account or even a new bank.
Ask your current bank if they have any other type of account that
comes with lower fees, or none at all. If they have nothing that
interests you, it’s time to take a look at the competition.
Many online-only banks offer a commission-free account. Some
require a regular deposit (wage or pension) and others don’t (often
called ‘cuenta no nómina’). If your Spanish is ok, you won’t have
any problem setting up an account online. However if this is an
issue your options will be limited to those banks that offer their
portal in English too.
Your new bank will be responsible for swapping over all your
direct debits. On each bank website or app they have a specific
section for changing your direct debits, although the name of the
service varies by bank. Avoid closing your old account until you’re
sure all your direct debits have gone through to the new bank to
avoid leaving any bills unpaid.

THE MARKET PLACE 9
Do you know if you need or how to
exchange your driving licence? Liberty
Seguros answers your questions.
There are many questions
being bounced around
about the consequences
of Brexit and what effect it
will have for those in Spain
and other parts of Europe.
And, of course, nothing
is certain yet. One of the
most recurring doubts is
about the validity of driving
licences. In this regard,
you must know that all
driving licences issued
in any member state of
the European Union and
the European Economic
Area are valid for driving
in Spain while they are in
force and have not been
removed for any reason.
While you have your permit in force,
the exchange for an equivalent
Spanish driver's licence is completely
voluntary. However, don’t forget that
once you obtain your legal residence
in Spain your licence will be subject
to the Spanish regulations regarding
its period of validity, control of
your psychophysical aptitudes and
assignment of a points credit. In those
cases, where the driving licence is not
subject to a specific period of validity,
this will have to be renewed after two
years since establishing your legal
residence in Spain.
However, from January 1st 2021, the
general regulations on non-EU countries
will apply to the permits issued by
the British authorities and you will be
allowed to drive in Spain for only six
months from your entry in Spain or
from the date of obtaining your legal
residence.
Therefore, if your driving licence was
issued in the United Kingdom and you
have been residing in Spain for a longer
period than 6 months this will no longer
be valid for driving in Spain from that
date.
10 THE MARKET PLACE
To continue driving on Spanish roads
without problems, you must exchange
your permit to a Spanish licence before
the said date.
To do so, you must arrange an
appointment with your nearest office
through https://sedeapl.dgt.gob.es
You still might use your Spanish licence
in the UK for short visits or exchange it
for a UK licence without taking a test if
you return to live in the UK.
What do you need to exchange
your licence?
• Official application form available
at the Jefaturas de Tráfico (Provincial
Traffic Departments) and on the DGT’s
website (www.dgt.es)
• Proof of identity and residence:
National identity card or passport;
your residence card, national identity
card or passport and your certificate
of registration in the Central Register
for Foreign Nationals if you are an EU
national; residence card for non-EU
nationals.
• Foreign driving licence to be
exchanged in force.
• Up-to-date 32 mm x 26 mm colour
photo
• Number or proof of payment of
having paid the fee II.3: 28,30e
There are three methods of payment:
online www.dgt.es, by bank card at
Traffic Departments and by direct
debit from a bank account or in cash at
financial institutions (model form 791
available at Traffic Departments and on
www.dgt.es)
All our over 300 agents and brokers
are highly qualified with extensive

Semana Santa Museum in Velez - a place
to experience Holy Week all year round
We are officially
living in extraordinary
unheard of times. At
the moment I write
this we have just been
advised to self isolate
for a period of at least
two weeks due to the
Coronavirus outbreak,
here in our beloved
Spain. So apart from
essential services
such as supermarkets,
pharmacies, banks all
other businesses are
closed to the public.
At this time of year we
are normally thinking
of heading out onto the
streets with crowds of
people to appreciate and
observe the "Semana
Santa" processions that
begin on Palm Sunday,
the 5th April. Sadly this
year the parades in
Velez Malaga will not go
ahead due to the rapid
progression of the virus
and it is with regret
that the Association of
Easter Brotherhoods
had to cancel this much
cherished event in the
calendar which attracts
12 THE MARKET PLACE
considerable crowds and has 10,500 participants during holy week.
A few weeks prior to the onset of the outbreak of the pandemic
virus, I had the pleasure of walking the quaint, historic streets of
old Velez Malaga to visit the Holy Week Museum (Museo de la
Semana Santa de Velez Malaga). This museum can be visited at
any time throughout the year (under normal circumstances!)from
Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 2pm or 5pm to 8pm or Sundays
and Festivos 10am to 2pm but closed Mondays.
I parked near the Mercado de San Francisco on the Plaza de San
Francisco in the historic centre and ventured past the fountain of
San Francisco and up the narrow street of Calle Cilla on a beautiful
bright sunny day. If you have not explored the streets of old Velez
yet, when the country gets back to normal make sure to do so.
The tiny cobbled streets ooze character and charm and there are
pockets of hidden surprises around every corner.
I turned a sharp left and then immediate right and passed by the
cute looking "Cruz del Arrabal de San Sebastian", which
is essentially a tiny chapel with a cross inside that
commemorates the entry of Ferdinand into Velez in
1487.
I followed the streets around until I hit the Plaza de
la Constitucion where the fortress walls tower above
you on one side and opposite stands an old granary
building called El Posito which now holds small
exhibitions. The church of San Juan de Bautista sits on
the corner and if you head down the opposite way to
Calle de las Tiendas you can find the beautiful marble
fountain "Fuente de Felipe II which was the original
fountain built in the 16th century.
The holy week museum is situated in the Iglesia Santa
Maria which can be found by walking up an inclining
street to the left of the fortress walls. You pass through
the old city gate, this is the area of Velez that is called
"La Villa" and is one of the oldest neighbourhoods
in Velez with many buildings dating back to Moorish
times. The modest houses tend to be on one level
only but there were examples of care and attention
to detail with flowering creepers and hanging baskets
complimenting the traditional tiles and stark white
of the walls. Half way up the climb to the church was
the house of a local painter which was in striking
contrast to the rest of the establishments. A bright
vibrant blue painted door and mozaic tiling to look
like the landscape and area of Velez Malaga. I stood in
admiration of the time and effort required to complete
such work.
I entered the church to view the Semana Santa
Museum and was greeted by a very welcoming
chap who explained that there was an audiovisual
production that would explain all about the processions
in Velez Malaga, how they started and about all the
different brotherhoods and why it is so important for
the culture and heritage in the town. It really helped give the
sensation of being in the midst of the religious spectacle that
the holy week has to offer in Velez.
The lovely part after watching the audiovisual production
was admiring the terrace and garden areas of the church
and museum and the view from that terrace was simply
breathtaking. A quirky addition were the boards with the
popular gastronomic recipes that are traditional in Velez and
the surrounding area at this special time of year. Receipes such
as: torrijas, ajobacalao, potaje de garbanzos and tortillitas de
bacalao con miel de cana.
Inside the museum, you can admire the altar which was
designed and completed between 1565 and 1580 by the
architect Diego de Vergura and the sculptor Pedro de Moros.
The guilding and ornamental elements were finished in the
17th century. The 3 floors are supported and each have relief
work from the life scenes of the Virgin Mary.
You can wander around the rest of the museum finding out
about the church and looking at all the antiquities behind
the glass cabinets. Similar items that you would see at the
processions including those with great depth and value:
sculptures, items of religious significance, clothing worn and
art. There is even an example of a golden throne that would be
carried by many people around the many streets of Velez.
The helpful attendant was full of thanks on leaving and
insisted we take literature to read more about the musuem and
church. The walk back down the hill was very pleasant and I
stopped to take a great shot of the view of Velez Malaga from
the top of the steps, although it appears a little sprawling at
times, the town has an abundance of character when you know
where to look!
So when we can finally be released from the confines of social
isolation, take a trip to the museum and discover why holy
week is so special and significant for many locals.

First Driving Impressions –
Audi Q3 Sportback
From the front there is hardly any difference to the well-loved and very popular
standard Q3 - if, in fact, you can call a Q3 standard. But move to the side of the
car and a whole new world opens up. There are sharper creases on the doors and
the engineering to produce such perfectly shaped metal. Go around the back and
it has a sloping roof, and looks like a very sexy Coupe. The front wings and rear
wings with their contoured haunches over the rear wheels look quite dramatic, a
very handsome looking SUV.
Audi have produced this car to offer
customers something a bit different.
Those loyal to the brand, and there
are plenty of them, could have gone
elsewhere to buy a good-looking
SUV, but to combat any deserters
Audi have come up with the perfect
solution.
The car we had on test was the Q3
Sportback 35 TDI S Line with the S
Tronic automatic gearbox that has
a basic price of around £37,000 in
the UK. Our test car had a few nice
options that bumped the price up to
nearly £43,000.
Like all new Audis, it has the new
badging system that is a bit difficult
to explain, especially to friends and
neighbours when you are in a rush.
This Audi had '35' on the rear door,
and people always say "I bet that
goes, having a 3.5-litre engine".
14 THE MARKET PLACE
In reality, the 35 is a power range
that is applicable to both petrol
and diesel engines, a good idea in
principal, but not sure it works in
reality.
This 35 TDI has something that we
do understand, and that is a 2.0-litre
diesel that produces 150ps, goes
from 0-62 mph in 9.3 seconds, and
has a top speed of 127 mph, where
permitted.
The interior space for passengers
appeared to be about the same
as the Q3 Hatch. Luggage space
with the rear seats folded down is
1,400-litres, and with the rear seats
up it is a very handy 530-litres.
You would think with it having that
sloping Coupe-like roof it would
lose some space, but not at all. It
probably has more room than many
of its competitors.
Driving the car around Yorkshire
for a few days proved it can ride
the potholes and lumpy roads very
well, and felt solid and safe. It has
loads of standard safety equipment
- typical Audi really.
The interior is very similar to the
Q3 Hatch, with very few changes,
but there really don’t need to be
any changes as the Q3 has plenty of
modern design features. Although
the plastic and trim at eye level
are up to the usual Audi very high
standard, look a bit lower down and
they can feel a bit hard and scratchy.
The infotainment system on the
Sportback is the same as the Hatch.
You get a 10-inch touchscreen as
standard and a 10-inch digital Virtual
Cockpit display that replaces the
conventional analogue dials. These
screens are so easy to use and so
intuitive and all the systems, including the
standard satellite navigation system and
telephone system, are very easy to use.
The Q3 Sportback is a lovely car to
drive. It has a raised seating position so
makes vision so much better. It is quiet,
with hardly any road, wind or engine
noise, thanks to its advanced sound
insulation system, including the insulated
windscreen.
Audi have designed and developed a very
attractive 5-door SUV Coupe that looks
brilliant from every angle. It's a car that
will appeal to a wide range of people, and
is bound to sell well.

Planting a difference by Mario Cecilia
In a world that is under the ever-growing threat of global warming, our best
strategy is to continue planting trees. Reforestation is still one of our best shots
at reversing the climate change crisis that we are already experiencing in the
Costa del Sol. With winters becoming so short and dry, living in Spain might
seem like a paradise for some tourists. However, it is crucial that we consider
its consequences in the short and long run. Wild fires have become a recurrent
headline in our summers, while the frequent floods and droughts constitute a
real struggle for our agriculture.
Projects like Málaga Viva try to tackle
the effects of global warming by
promoting reforestation events in
different rural areas of small
villages. These “arboladas”
or tree-planting events are
intended for the whole family
and they run from early
Autumn to late Spring.
If you would like to
participate in these events,
you can fill in the form for
any towns in which you
would like to participate. It’s
pretty straightforward; there
is a bus that will pick you up
from Malaga and take you to
the designated village.
Once the whole team has
gotten to the village,
the agenda includes
a brief introduction
to the importance of
reforestation and a
training on how to dig
and plant the trees. You will be given tools, gloves
and access to as many saplings as you wish to plant
according to your skills, strength and age.
Most of the species that you will be planting are
autochthonous trees and it is interesting to know the
importance of these regional plants for our ecosystem.
In the last few decades, there has been a gradual shift
towards tropical species like avocado, mangoes and
papayas. While these trees have adapted quite well
to the Mediterranean weather, they require larger
amounts of irrigated water than the local and forgotten
rainfed trees.
Once the saplings have been planted, you will be
offered some snacks and freebies and a tour of the
village alongside the Mayor. It’s a great opportunity
to get to know some of the lesser known villages of
Málaga and to make some friends while you are at it.
It is important to bear in mind that these events are
conducted in Spanish and while it is not a requisite,
a general understanding of the Spanish language is
advised. Wearing comfortable clothing and bringing
your own lunch is also recommended.
And if you have a little finca of your own and would
like to take up this noble challenge, consider investing
in some indigenous plants to our region like almond,
fig and olive trees. Some of them, like carob trees,
are endangered, so consider getting some of them
to further promote the preservation of our rural
ecosystem.
Planting a tree is one of the most rewarding
experiences that we can aspire in life, and we would
very much like to encourage our readers to give it a
chance. Like the author Munia Khan once said:
“Trees exhale for us so that we can inhale them to stay
alive. Can we ever forget that?
Let us love trees with every breath we take until we
perish”

Take a ride at the London
Transport Museum
Sometimes the best things are those that are unplanned. That can be said about a lot of
things, especially travel. Last time I was in London I pretty much tossed my thoughtfully
crafted itinerary out the window and it all seemed to work out for the best. For example, one
afternoon we found ourselves sitting in Covent Garden, debating how to spend the rest of the
day. Low and behold, we looked up and spotted the London Transport Museum. Could be
interesting.
By Jessica Infantino Trumble
The museum is divided between three
levels that trace the history of urban
transportation in London, featuring a
ton of interactive exhibits and more than
320,000 objects including actual vehicles
that you can climb inside.
Your journey starts on the top floor in the
1800s when the horse-drawn Omnibus
ruled the streets of London. It replaced

Chiringuito de Ayo
Generally known as 'Ayo's'. If you wish to enjoy the best paella on
the Costa del Sol, Ayo's is the place to visit.
Ayo's is situated on the famous
Burriana Beach, where tourists

the Chiringuito's and restaurants,
not just to enjoy the paellas,
but also the unique atmosphere.
Surrounded by palm trees,

other modes of transportation like the person-pulled
sedan chairs and introduced the city to the concept
of a public mode of transportation that traveled a set
route and did not require a reservation. Other vehicles
like trollies and trams soon followed.
As we moved down to the next level we learned
that the growth of London both influenced and was
in response to new modes of transportation, and
the introduction of the rail road created a need to
connect various train stations around the city. Enter
the world’s first underground Metro system in 1863.
Its carriages were hauled by steam locomotives and
became part of what we know as the Circle Line today.
Although, the London Underground wasn’t necessarily
met with the warmest of welcomes and a huge
marketing campaign was implemented to convince
people to ride (shopping in the city or the weekend in
the country anyone?).
On the ground floor we walked among various
motorized vehicles including London’s iconic
red double decker buses along with a handful of
fascinating exhibits spanning the invention of the
escalator system to the power of branding, from
typography and signage right down to the pattern
of the fabrics used on the seats. Other exhibits look
at the role of the system during wartime and a fun
interactive activity to explore the future of public
transportation and city planning.
To say the museum is interesting would be an
understatement. It was beyond fascinating and
almost too much to take in during a single visit. The
good news is that despite the slightly steep admission
price, your ticket is valid for one year so you have
the opportunity to return for multiple visits if your
travel plans allow. The London Transport Museum is
an adventure for all ages and a great compliment to
some of the other more popular sights in London. It
definitely gives you something to think about next
time you hop on a bus or venture underground to ride
the Tube.

THE MARKET PLACE 21
The Great Escape - Part II
By Janet Patterson, author of ‘Al Gore goes to Heaven’
The 3rd Essex Battalion, code name ‘Feisty Felines,’
were parachuted into German-occupied France during
World War II to infiltrate enemy lines and relay valuable
information to the French Resistance.
They took shelter in a row of deserted farm labourers’
cottages. The next morning, they woke up to find
themselves surrounded by the Enemy. Read on …
Photo: 123rf.com
A cockerel crowed from a neighbouring
farm, announcing the dawn of a new day.
Patch woke up with a start. The rain had
stopped and the sun rose over the window
sill against a pale blue sky.
‘Oh no!’ he thought. ‘I’ve slept all night!
I’ll be court-martialled if anyone finds out!
I’d better check to see that everything is all
right.’
He could hear strange voices speaking
gruffly close by. Running to a front window
and reaching up, he peeked out. To his
horror the house was surrounded by dogs!
He ran upstairs two at a time. The rest of
the cats were fast asleep sprawled over the
beds, unaware of the danger they were in.
He approached Monty, tapping him gently
with his paw.
‘Sir! Wake up! We’re surrounded! We’ve
been betrayed!’
Monty jumped off the bed and ran towards
the bedroom window. The garden was
choc-a-bloc with dogs: a Bloodhound with
a monocle in his eye wearing a peeked cap,
a Bulldog, a German Shepherd, a Poodle,
a Rottweiler, a Jack Russell, a Dachshund,
a Boxer, and a Chihuahua. He didn’t
recognize the other breeds. All of them
wore well-cut green belted jackets. From
their belts hung holsters and in each holster
was a gun.
When the dogs saw Monty’s face at the
window, they all started barking and howling.
The cats ran across the landing to a window
that overlooked the back garden. To their
horror the yard was also filled with dogs
yelping and generally kicking up a racket.
‘We’re trapped!’ exclaimed Mimi. ‘What are
we going to do?’
‘We’re outnumbered and the dogs are all
armed,’ remarked Monty. ‘There’s only one
thing we can do.’
‘What’s that?’ asked Cheeky.
‘Make friends with them!’ came the reply.
‘Make friends with the Germans?’
exclaimed Tommy. ‘That’s treason!’
Monty turned to Charley.
‘Fetch me a white handkerchief or towel
from the chest!’
He came back with a long white baby’s
gown.
‘This is all I could find,’ explained Charley
apologetically.
‘That will do fine,’ replied Monty, taking a
stick from the pile of logs and slipping it
through the sleeves.
‘Open the window!’
With a heave from the twins, the window
22 THE MARKET PLACE
creaked opened and Monty leaned out,
brandishing the make-shift flag.
The Bloodhound chortled.
‘So you surrender!’ he declared. ‘Very
wise.’
‘Yes,’ replied Monty, ‘we surrender under
the rules of the Geneva Convention!’
‘Of course under the Geneva Convention.
What do you think we are? Animals?’
The Bloodhound started guffawing at his
own joke. He laughed so hard he started to
cough and splutter.
‘Come downstairs and through the front
door one at a time with your paws in the
air!’ he commanded once he had recovered
his composure.
Monty dropped back into the bedroom and
the twins shut the window.
‘Charley, Tommy, put the shawls and
blankets back in the chest! The rest follow
me!’
Monty walked downstairs carrying the
banner and opened the front door. He
stepped out into the garden into a semicircle
of yapping dogs.
‘Silence!’ barked the Bloodhound. Turning
towards Monty, he asked, ‘Are you the
officer in charge?’
‘I am Lieutenant Commander Monty of
the Third Essex Battalion!’ he announced
proudly, saluting.
‘I am Herr Komandant Bosch. You may
address me as ‘Herr Komandant’ or ‘Sir.’
How many are in your unit?’
‘Twelve altogether, including myself.’
‘Sir!’ the Herr Komandant reminded him
sharply.
‘Sir!’ replied Monty, saluting again for good
measure.
By this time all the cats had followed him
out into the garden and were standing with
their paws in the air.
Bosch gave the order for the cats to be
searched by three of the dogs, while
another six went inside the house to look
around the premises.
When the dogs had finished searching
the cats, the Bloodhound told them to
stand at ease. He walked around the rows,
asking each cat for his name, which the
Poodle wrote down on a notepad. The dogs
exploring the house came out and reported
on what they had found – nothing much
except a few pieces of furniture.
‘Any food?’ asked the Bloodhound.
‘Only some stale crumbs of bread, sour
milk and mouldy cheese – oh and some
empty sardine cans,’ replied the German
Shepherd.
The Komandant ordered the cats back
inside, where they were told to stay.
‘There will be dogs on guard in the garden
at all times, so don’t try to escape!’
They filed back into the house and closed
the door. Outside the German Shepherd
and a Yorkshire Terrier were left to guard
them. The Alsatian paced back and forth
outside the window, every now and then
looking inside to see what the cats were
doing.
Monty ran upstairs and motioned for the
other cats to follow him. As they passed the
windows in the rear overlooking the back
garden, they could see another two dogs
on sentry duty. In the adjacent cottage they
could hear the other dogs moving about in
the next room.
Mickey pressed his ear against the wall.
‘What are they saying?’ whispered Monty.
‘He says that he has contacted
Headquarters and is waiting for instructions
… someone is saying we shall probably try
to escape … by digging a tunnel into the
garden! The other dogs are laughing.’
Monty sat down and took out his pipe,
which he kept hidden in his cap, and sucked
upon it. There was no tobacco in it and in
reality, he didn’t smoke. He had tried it once
and nearly choked. But it helped him think
and gave him an air of authority.
‘Well, lads,’ he said in a soft voice so that
their neighbours could not hear them, ‘any
suggestions for an escape plan?’
‘Perhaps we could climb up the chimney?’
suggested Tommy.
They crowded round the bedroom fireplace
and looked up the chimney. Tommy tried to
climb up the side a couple of times, but he
fell back, covered in soot.
‘The sides are too smooth. It’s difficult to
get a pawhold!’
‘Perhaps you could loosen some of the
bricks and swivel them round, so that they
can be used as footholds.’
‘I’m not climbing up a chimney,’ objected
Mimi. ‘I’ll get my fur dirty!’
‘That’s all right,’ replied Mickey. ‘You can
stay behind and explain to the Germans
what happened!’
Monty peered up at the square of sky at the
top.
‘The passage is narrow. Some of us
might find it hard to squeeze through,’ he
remarked.
Patch turned to Charley: ‘You’d have to
lose weight!’

THE MARKET PLACE 23
‘What about the noise,’ asked Tiger.
‘What we need is a Distraction,’ announced
Monty.
‘What’s a Distraction?’ enquired Squeaky.
‘We’ll put on a concert for our German
hosts. While we are rehearsing someone
can tap away at the bricks!’
They all went down to the kitchen.
Tommy and Charley were assigned to
brick duty. They found knives in the cutlery
drawer
‘Remember,’ Monty warned them, ‘wait
until rehearsals begin and keep time to the
music.’
‘How about a hornpipe?’ suggested Mickey,
pulling out a tin whistle from his breast
pocket. He climbed up on the table where
Cheeky and Patch joined him, stamping
and making as much noise as they could.
The other cats clapped as they took their
bow and jumped down.
‘How about a choral work? I think our
friends would enjoy some Beethoven!’
Tommy and Tiger took down some pots
and pans which they banged upon with
metal spoons as the rest started meowing
the melody of ‘Ode to Joy.’
A few minutes later the front door banged
open and the Bloodhound walked in,
carrying a cane under his arm. Everybody
froze.
‘What is the meaning of all this
caterwauling? What a horrible din! It is
giving me a headache!’
Monty stepped forward and saluted.
‘We are sorry, Herr Komandant! We were
rehearsing for a concert. We were going
to invite you but we wanted it to be a
surprise!’
‘A concert you say? Well, you’ll need a lot
of rehearsing!’
‘I do apologize. We’re out of practice.
We were going to offer you some light
refreshment!’
‘Light refreshment you say? What do you
mean?’
‘Well, we found some wine that we wanted
to share with you. It’s a very good year!’
Monty picked up a bottle and offered it to
the Komandant.
‘Here, perhaps you’d like to sample some
to see if it is to your liking?’
The Bloodhound took the bottle and
examined the label, but he couldn’t read it
because it was covered in dust and mildew.
‘Well, I don’t mind if I do!’
As he turned to go, he hesitated. ‘And
what time will this err .. entertainment to
take place?’
‘Tomorrow evening around 6 o’clock. Sir!’
after which Monty saluted again.
The Komandant left, chuckling to himself.
* * *
The following afternoon the cats made
their preparations for the concert. The
kitchen table was covered with a lacy
tablecloth that they had found in the chest
and the polished glasses were lined up
next to several bottles of red wine. Two
bottles had been emptied except for a
small amount of red liquid at the bottom.
To this had been added water, which gave
the bottle the appearance of containing
rosé wine. Peter, who was to serve as wine
waiter, had been instructed to give red
wine to the dogs and rosé to the cats.
24 THE MARKET PLACE
Promptly at six o’clock there was a knock
at the front door. Monty opened it to reveal
Herr Bosch.
‘Come in, Sir, welcome to our little
entertainment! Help yourself to a glass of
wine!’ Monty indicated the rows of filled
glasses.
‘Well, Danke schön!’ he remarked, looking
around the room. A fire crackled in the
hearth and lit candles had been placed
along the window sills.
‘You’ve made it very cosy!’ he remarked.
Monty indicated a chair to him.
‘Please, make yourself comfortable!’
As the Komandant settled down, the rest
of the dogs filed in and received their glass
of red wine. Some sat on the few vacant
chairs while others settled down on the
floor in a semi-circle.
Mickey stepped centre-stage and pulled
out a tin whistle from under his cap and
placed it to his mouth. A hush fell over the
expectant assembly.
Tapping his foot in time to the music
he played the first few bars of a sailors’
hornpipe. Three cats appeared from the
open door leading into the hallway dancing
in time to the music, alternating their front
paws in front and then behind them.
The dogs laughed and cheered, clapping
their paws.
When the dancers reached the centre they
placed their paws one above the other as
if climbing an imaginary rope and danced
around in a circle. Then they turned around
on the spot, spinning their front paws
around each other.
By now all the dogs were tapping their paws
or slapping their thighs in time to the music.
The three cats then placed their paws on
their hips and did a jig, facing the audience.
They ended with a bow, while the dogs
clapped and barked enthusiastically.
During the short interval that followed,
Peter circulated with bottles of wine,
topping up the dogs’ empty glasses. They
even passed glasses through the window to
the Dalmatian and the other dogs who were
on guard duty in the garden.
Next entered three cats dressed in long lace
gowns and bonnets that they had found
in the chest. They started singing ‘Three
little Maids from School,’ and when one of
the ‘maids’ winked at the Komandant, he
laughed so much his monocle fell out and
he nearly toppled off his chair.
In between each act, the wine waiter did his
job, making sure that every dog had a full
glass. A few tried to protest, but Peter could
be very charming and persuasive.
‘Why are you drinking rosé wine, while you
serve us red?’ the Komandant asked Monty.
‘The rosé is of an inferior quality,’ replied
Monty. ‘We couldn’t possibly offer it to our
guests.’
‘How do I know this isn’t spiked?’ asked
Herr Bosch, his monocle glinting.
‘May I?’ responded Monty, taking the halfempty
glass from the Komandant’s. After
draining it in one gulp he called out to
Peter, ‘Another glass for the Komandant!’
The third performance was a solo given
by Blue, who sang ‘Danny Boy.’ All the
dogs wept at the plaintive melody and the
touching lyrics. The Herr Komandant was
positively blubbering, so much so that the
Bulldog, who was his Second-in-Command,
had to lend him a handkerchief.
‘It is not fitting for a German officer to cry,’
he muttered through his clenched teeth.
For the finale, the cats grouped together
on the stage for a choral version of ‘Ode to
Joy.’ The dogs pricked up their ears eagerly
as they heard the introductory notes,
but when the cats started singing it was
obvious that some of them were flat, and
that the harmonies weren’t quite in key.
After about a minute of suffering, Herr
Bosch stood up and announced in the
middle of their rendition, ‘Well, thank you
very much. It has been a wonderful evening
but we really have to be getting back!’
The other dogs stood up and followed him
out the door. Some of them attempted a
jig as they walked along the garden path.
Through the paneless windows, the cats
could hear strains of ‘Three Little Maids
from School.’
‘That song about Danny - the words are
so sad! First he is hearing the pipes and
he is going off to war, then he is coming
back when the summer is on the meadow!’
sobbed the Komandant. ‘It reminds me
of my poor little Mitzi waiting for me in
Schlezwig-Holstein!’
The sounds of his weeping reached them
as he walked along the garden path to his
front door. Another dog hiccupped.
The cats waited. After about 5 minutes a
hush descended, followed by loud snoring.
‘Blow out the candles and douse the fire!’
whispered Monty.
Mimi checked the windows. ‘The guards
are all asleep, front and back!’
‘Good! Let’s go!’
They ran silently up the stone steps to the
bedroom.
‘Mission completed, Sir!’ Tommy reported,
raising his paw in a salute.
‘Good lads!’ he replied, leading the way
to the fireplace. He poked his head up the
chimney.
‘Well done!’ he commented as he saw the
footholds that they had created.
‘Tommy! Lead the way!’
He disappeared up the chimney breast.
Out on the roof a full moon shone on an
overgrown garden. Nothing stirred.
‘The coast is clear!’ he called back in a
hoarse whisper.
One by one the others followed him.
Anyone who happened to be walking
through the village after curfew that night
would have witnessed an assortment of
cats balancing along the apex of the roof
in single file, silhouetted by the full moon,
as they made their way to the far end. They
slid down the roof to the gutter, where
they climbed onto the outspread branches
of a chestnut tree. When they reached
the ground, they crossed the garden and
climbed over the stone wall to freedom.
Thus the Feisty Felines escaped from their
canine captors and went on to complete
their mission.
Because their actions came under the
Official Secrets Act, no one could report
their bravery or the contribution they made
to the war effort by passing on information
to the French Resistance. But many years
have passed and their files have become
declassified, so now their story may be
told.

THE MARKET PLACE 25
Chia by
Mario Cecilia
Around 3500 BC, the early civilizations
of Central America were cultivating
a tiny little seed that would play a
very important role in their societies.
The Aztecs considered the chia seed sacred and
it was used as an offering to the Gods in certain
religious ceremonies. As a matter of fact, what today is
considered a superfood, was then believed to provide
super-natural powers. The etymology of the word
“Chia” comes from the Mayan language and it means
“strength”. It constituted a main pillar in their diet and the
ancient warriors attributed their endurance to this little seed.
Given that it could be stored for several years and it was an
excellent source of energy, the chia seed soon became the perfect
travel snack for long and tiresome trips.
With the arrival of the Spanish Conquistadores in the 16th century,
the use of the chia was considered pagan and consequently banned.
Despite being almost wiped out of the continent for 500 years, we are
still very fortunate to be able to enjoy its many benefits. Science has
proven that despite their size, chia seeds are indeed one of the most
nutritious foods on the planet
• They are loaded with fibre able to hold a considerate amount
of water, which helps with and could aid in losing weight.
Soaking them in water can make their satisfying and filling
effect last longer, while keeping our body hydrated.
• They are an excellent source of Omega 3 fatty acids
and are also relatively high in protein containing all nine
essential amino acids that the body cannot produce.
• They are also rich in antioxidants, calcium (one ounce of chia
contains five times more calcium than an ounce of milk!), and trace minerals
including zinc and copper.
Why not give Chia seeds a try? Since they do not have a strong flavour they can be included in a wide variety of
foods. We recommend adding a spoonful to your breakfast porridges, sprinkled in salad or blended in healthy
smoothies.

TAIL Torrox
In this month’s article, we would like to share with you the
story of a very special boy named Sammy. Sammy was a
happy and energetic puppy living in an apartment with his
lovely human dad.
One very sad day, Sammy’s dad was diagnosed with lung cancer. In the
last months of his life, Sammy’s dad spent long periods of time away in the
hospital and Sammy was taken care by his elderly grandparents. This was a
real struggle for them since they were in their 80’s and Sammy was a lively
and active young dog.
Tragically, Sammy’s dad passed away and his parents could not keep on
taking care of him. Then, they decided to give him another chance with the
folks at TAIL TORROX.
Having lived most of his life in an apartment, the first few weeks in the
kennels were a struggle for Sammy, but he is adapting now. When he goes
out, he is not afraid of traffic and he is a bit keen to pull. But he is a quick
learner and would definitely benefit from basic training and more exercise.
Sammy is one year and a half old German shepherd cross. He is very
friendly with people and appears to be good with other dogs, although he is
not that keen on cats! He would be best suited
to a home with no small children as he is a bit
excitable and jumps up.
If you would like to know more about
Sammy and our other wonderful dogs
for adoption, please get in touch or visit
our website www.tailtorrox.es
We are Torrox Animal Internation League (TAIL), a local charity/ refuge set in Torrox. Our goals are to rescue and rehome
abandoned and maltreated dogs and work to educate local community about dog care and neutering. With new cases of animal
abandonment every week, we need your help to keep on pursuing these goals. Please subscribe to our one euro campaign!
The shops are open Mon-Sat 10am-2pm. The shelter is open Tues-Sun 11am-2pm and closed all day Monday. Both accept

Neil and his wife Katherine retired to Nerja in 2018.
Asked why he chose to join the RBL Nerja Neil says “ Because of my past military service
and my support of the Wounded Warriors Project in the USA which has similar objectives
to the RBL. Supporting the RBL and thus the UK military and veterans was a natural
choice and also gave me the opportunity to enjoy the comradeship of my fellow UK

Manish's Zodiac predictions - April
Manish Kumar Arora,
K.P. Astrologer, Numerologist, Tarot Card Reader & Vastu Consultant
Facebook: manishastroconsultant email: manish@manishastrologer.com
Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )
You will explore new avenues, place yourself in
newer surroundings and accept any invitations
you’re sent; because that ‘next career shift’ you’ve
been waiting to enter your life will be right around
the corner. This month promises opportunities to
expand your career goals. You will approach your
romantic relationships a little more differently,
trying to understand how you can help contribute
to your partners’ life.
Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )
New investment opportunities might expand your
bank balance as well as a certain pay-raise or a
new job with great perks might land in your lap.
You are in a place of celebration to have finally
found that perfect balance in romance and are
focusing your energies on keeping your happy
place more accessible and allowing yourself to
visualize the life you wish to live.
Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June)
You are looking for a new source of inspiration, or
a message that reinvigorates you. However, you
need to be careful of not allowing the workplace
to be your lone source of satisfaction.. Treat
your relationships with honesty and patience
this month. Use the power of love as an active,
restorative force for good. Take pro-active steps
to activate your dreams and meet your goals.
Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )
This could be a time when you decide to change
careers, to start taking the necessary steps to
move in that direction. Letting go of the past and
not falling prey to idealism may be conditions
you need to deal with first. Taking a practical
approach is favoured which should include a
careful assessment of past experience and what
life has taught you so far.
Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )
There may be a sudden change, a disturbance or
unexpected event which introduces something new
into your life which is likely to be of a challenging
nature. A passionate approach to situations that
deserve compassion is favoured as well as careful
consideration of ethical matters. This period is
indicating a time to rethink and resolve old issues,
but breaking away from previous situations or
decisions will be difficult.
Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )
It’s time to get on with the next chapter of your
life, and if you consciously and deliberately put
your focus on getting started you’ll begin to see
results. There’s a lot of recalibration and upgrade
still taking place, to give your heart a chance to
catch up. Pay attention to those places where
you’re not feeling all in, especially where new
chapters are beginning.
Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )
Your money flow remains strong but do staunch the
"outward flow" - spending, debts, etc. Investments
previously made were a good idea, so continue to
value them, but don't make new ones. Your career
scene is tricky - higher-ups are both impatient and
cautious, and you, too, might blow hot and cold
about your ambitions. Romance is highlighted, but
love's road has a few potholes.
Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )
Now is the perfect time to pursue creative interests
and do something that is self- fulfilling and satisfying.
Keep your head down at work and get on with your
day to day business in as quiet a way as you can.
Your home life won’t be any great shakes either this
month and there’s no life changing event likely in the
coming four weeks.
Sagittarius ( 22 November – 21 December )
Money flows swiftly to you (and, if you're not
conservative, flows from you) now to mid-April. Save
it! Your plans for the future will change daily - be
patient. Social, organizational and entertainment
plans might go awry. Avoid new ventures, whether
they're your own idea or someone else's suggestion.
Only research, investigative, and "from the past"
projects will be free of glitches.
Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January )
The first two weeks of this month find you
radiating irresistible charm, so use it wisely and
reap rewards. Money matters become more
important later on. You'll want to improve your
finances - perhaps by finding a different job, or
ways to earn cash from your hobbies, home, or
passions. Possibilities and ideas spring up in your
neighbourhood, through friends.
Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )
This will be a month of opportunity, negotiation or
wrestling with a challenge – you’ll want to be free of
the chains of chores. Your sexual, financial and “deep
health” zones grow more and more important – and
generally lucky. This can lead to a lustful affair, an
investment or settlement – all of which open lifestyle
doorways. Love would be a “source of health.”
Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )
This is not the time to be storing up any little niggles
that could come back on you like a hurricane later.Pay
attention to your partner and don’t do anything that
you know full well will upset her/him, even if it seems
like an insignificant trifle to you. You’ll make solid
advances socially, could make new friends, might be
attracted to a potential mate.

Club Nerja Rugby
Following a run of three defeats away from home
Club Nerja Rugby were glad to get back home and
to their winning ways on 23rd February. They
were able to score 11 tries in a comfortable 61-
12 defeat of near neighbours CR Victoriano from
Rincon de la Victoria.
This was a great team effort in which Rogelio Lopez Armijo,
Ricardo Carratu Romero and Eugenio Diaz each scored a hat-trick
of tries. This win put CNR back into third place in the league table
and back on track for a place in the end of season playoffs.
Two weeks later they entertained current league leaders CR
Estrecho from Sotogrande. Having suffered a 0-61 defeat earlier in
the season Nerja were keen to get their revenge over the visitors.
In a more confident display Nerja led by 20-12 at half time. It
was, however, a less confident display in the second half. They
surrendered some of the lead but managed to hold on to a threepoint
margin until midway through the half. Then Nerja picked up
two yellow cards in quick succession and the visitors made use
of their two-man advantage to run in 3 tries to open up a 14-point
lead. Following a try apiece the final score was 41-27 to Estrecho.
This defeat dropped Nerja back to fourth position and needing a
win in their final game against Malaga. This game has fallen foul
of the national emergency and awaits resolution of the current
situation before it is rescheduled.
Alex is a well known figure in Nerja, having been in the
town for 10 years and having previously worked at Bar
El Bosque and the CNR Sports Bar. An ex Rugby player
and coach, and proud Munster Man, Alex looks forward
to welcoming customers old and new to the bar at Calle

THE MARKET PLACE 41
C.A.S. (Costa Animal Society)
CORONAVIRUS
WITH THE TRAGEDY OF THE CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK IN SPAIN, THE COSTA ANIMAL
SOCIETY (CAS) IS LIKE EVERYONE ELSE, IN LOCK DOWN. THE CAS SHOP WILL REMAIN
CLOSED UNTIL RESTRICTIONS ARE LIFTED AND THERE WILL ALMOST CERTAINLY BE NO
QUIZ IN APRIL.
AS CAS RELIES HEAVILY ON THESE TWO SOURCES OF INCOME, WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO
TAKE ON ANY CASES UNTIL THE STORM HAS PASSED. BEST WISHES TO ALL.
FEATURED DOGS OF THE MONTH
CURRO
Curro was found by a Costa Animal
Society (CAS) volunteer in the campo
after he had been attacked by another
dog and he had several bite marks on
his back as well as a long term abscess
in a tooth that created an opening in
his cheek. His owner told the rescuer
that he was not going to pay for any vet
treatment because Curro was an old dog
and he was going to let nature take its
course.
The volunteer convinced the owner to
relinquish Curro to CAS and he has been
in our care for the past five weeks. His
bites have healed and he has undergone
several courses of antibiotics but the
cheek abscess is a chronic problem that
still requires special treatment.
Curro has an independent character
as he has probably spent much of
his life on his own in the campo, but
he does like people and is okay with
female dogs and has not bothered our
cats. We think with males it would
need to be evaluated on a case by
case basis. Curro is about 12 years old
and is otherwise in good health but
still needs vaccinations and we will
discuss castration with the vet once his
treatment is finished.
DOGS AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION
Foxy is one of four pups currently being
rescued by the Costa Animal Society
(CAS) from the campo above Frigiliana
and he is the only male. He is about
four-six months old and is a small, Jack
Russell, type dog who only weighs
about five kilos and will remain small.
42 THE MARKET PLACE
Foxy has a playful personality and gets
along with other dogs, not sure about
cats, but is a bit shy due to his limited
experience with being handled by
humans. tene is young and is learning to
trust people. Foxy has been vaccinated
but not yet castratred and is in good
health.
Cara is the older sister of Foxy and she
is about one year old and was rescued
from the same field. She is a little
bigger and weighs about ten kilos and
is a full grown Jack Russell size. Since
she has lived longer as a wild dog it will
take longer for her to get used to being
handled by people and she will probably
never be a lap dog but can learn to trust
people and live a happy life in a fenced
garden.
Cara has a sweet but timid nature and
gets along well with other dogs but we
are not sure about cats. She has now
been vaccinated and will be spayed later
this month.

If you would like to meet one of the
animals under CAS’s care and are
looking to adopt or are willing to foster
a pet please contact Kurt and Laura at
95 252 1426 or Fiona through the CAS
website www.casnerja.webs.com, or
Facebook page \casnerja.
CAN YOU HELP CAS?
The Costa Animal Society (CAS) is
always in need of more volunteer
helpers in a number of areas so if you
have spare time to fill, please make
contact! In particular, we are currently
seeking someone or ones who can
help with fundraising and social media
promotion.
In addition, fosterers are always
required to take short-term care of
animals until a permanent home can be
found. CAS will provide fosterers with
all they need: food, medicine, bedding,
leads, etc., as well as advice at any time.
Even if you are only here for few months
a year, CAS would appreciate your help.
For general enquires and a no-obligation
chat, feel free to contact Kurt or Laura at
95 252 1426.
Despite the uncertainties of Brexit
among other things, money is always
needed to cope with the continuous flow
of abandoned dogs and cats requiring
help from the Costa Animal Society. If
you could donate a little to help the
animals, CAS would be most grateful.

MAKE PLANS FOR YOUR PET FOR
WHEN YOU CANNOT CARE FOR
THEM
This is a subject most people do not
like to think about but it is extremely
important to make plans for the care
of your pet if you should become
seriously ill, or worse, pass away. In
the past, the Costa Animal Society
(CAS) has had to take in pets when
their owners were suddenly admitted
into a nursing home and there were no

advance arrangements made for the
animals.
In these instances CAS usually receives
an urgent phone call from someone
looking for a place to house the animals
but when asked, there is no clear
answer as to who would be responsible
for the boarding and food costs,
which can run into the hundreds if not
thousands of euros. Fortunately, in
past instances CAS has been in contact
with someone managing the financial
affairs of the owner and at least part of
the financial burden for the care of their
pets were met.
PORTIA
On an even more serious note, in the
past year CAS has had a couple of
cases where people have died suddenly
and left animals to fend for themselves
because no plan was in place to
assume responsibility for the surviving
pet. It cannot be assumed that the next
of kin will automatically look after a
beloved pet even if an owner leaves all
of their worldly goods to their family
unless provisions are expressly written
into the will.
If this were to happen to you and there
is no relative or friend willing to step
forward, imagine what might happen to
your beloved furry friend? The worstcase
scenario is that your pet would be
taken to the pound and if not rehomed
in two weeks, would be put down.
Luckily for Portia a foster place was
found and later the fosterers adopted
her permanently. Poor Patty the cat is
still waiting in kennels for her forever
home after her owner died and CAS
is working diligently to find a family
for her. Sando was orphaned last
month and CAS and a couple of other
local organisations advertised him
extensively, which paid off because,
PATTY Pippa’s Pawprint in
Nerja found him a
home.
This is why it is so
important to sit down
with your designated
caregiver and have a
serious conversation
about where your pet
is going to live after
you are gone. Even
better put your wishes
in writing or make it part of your will,
i.e. you can have my house and money
as long as you take good care of Fluffy.
Another way to provide for your pet
after you depart, as well as many other
animals, is to donate a portion of your
estate to a local animal charity such as
CAS.

has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa
is a magnificent promenade that was made famous
by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride

beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. There are many beaches to be found either side
and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants.
Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing,

impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory.

Torre del Mar
is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez
Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and
September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded
over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive
promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports.
Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo
de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end
of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain,
but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the
Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village
until major development began in the 1970’s.

Lake Viñuela
is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the
junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this
direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The
first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga.
This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge
and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and
immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road
will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction
called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno,
and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin,
Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Competahas grown considerably
over the past few years,
having over 35 different
nationalities all living in harmony together. Its charming whitewashed
streets come together in a central plaza where you will find the Church
of La Asunción with its unique golden dome that stands out above the
village. There are many fine restaurants, cafés, and tapas bars; and
gift shops that sell the local ceramics. Competa is famous for its sweet
muscatel wine, which is available in most bars, but highly potent, so
drink with care!

Frigiliana
encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people
year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and
because there are many holiday homes here, the population
triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana
dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited
by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans
to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s
development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was
the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle
of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete
expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history
of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic
section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques
posted about which explain the entire story.
