If you are in our catchment area within the Northwest of England including Yorkshire, Independent

Workwear Solutions supply a comprehensive range of garments in various styles, fabrics and colours

across all business sectors which include the workwear industrial laundry sector, Engineering,

Automotive, Food Trade, Food Manufacturing, Abbatoirs, Labs etc.

We also have a specialist range of garments manufactured with the latest technical fabrics to ensure

the wearer is adequately protected from welding sparks, sources of heat and flame, molten metal

splash, arc flash or chemical splash.

In addition we supply multi functional garments which can provide protection for numerous applications

ensuring the wearer is protected from various risks or hazards within the workplace environment.

Our suppliers use the highest quality UK dyed and finished treated fabric in conjunction with there

“cutting edge” inherent fabrics which are used in the manufacture of a Technical range of garments. We

benefit from our manufacturer having both UK and offshore manufacturing facilities which gives us an

advantage with pricing and flexibility in delivery times. They use the most advanced production and

management techniques and the materials are specially chosen for their durability, high performance

and protection to ensure they comply with the latest standards. All of our garments are suitable for both

domestic and industrial laundering.

Our all-inclusive service includes quality garment rental along with regular laundering. Our

high quality garments and full RFID management reporting of garments all at one low

monthly charge, this option offers excellent budget control and value for money.

LAUNDER ONLY

IWS offer a laundry service suitable for businesses who already own their own workwear

or are planning to purchase new workwear from IWS. If you have already purchased your

own workwear, IWS will ensure that your garments are chipped up and are suitable for

industrial laundering.

SPLIT RENTAL

This highly advantageous option allows you to reduce your capital outlay and still take full

advantage of our laundry service. If required, all rented garments can be laundered on an

as and when required basis.

How Should You Clean Your Workwear?

Personal protective equipment is designed and manufactured to ensure that wearers are

protected from the identified workplace risks at all times, significantly improving the

safety of workers in hazardous environments. However, in order for PPE to properly do

its job, it’s essential that workwear is well maintained and looked after.

But what exactly is the best way to wash and clean your workwear? We sat down with

our expert manufacturing team to find out some of the most important do’s and don’ts for

washing clothing.

Flame Retardant Clothing

“The most important thing of all is to check the care labels on

each individual garment,” says our team. “This tells you

everything you need to know, including the best temperature

to wash at, and what products can and can’t be used on the

material.” But what happens if a care label can’t be read or

understood? “Generally, the best advice we can give is the

gentler the better when it comes to PPE”.

Hi Vis & Reflective Clothing

Reflective and high visibility clothing is important for

maintaining visibility on the worksite, so any clothing that

features reflective strips should be cared for carefully. One of

the main concerns when washing this type of clothing is that

the reflective strips can become damaged or streaked in the

machine, reducing its impact.

The trick to extending the life of reflective clothing is to wash

it inside out so that the strips are not in direct contact with the

inside of the machine which can act as an abrasive during the

wash cycle.

Our expert tip: Use a liquid laundry detergent rather than a

powder as powders can be abrasive against the material if

they don’t dissolve properly, which can happen when washing

at low temperatures.

The good news is that inherently flame retardant clothing means that the protection can’t

simply wash out, but there are a number of products that can reduce the effect of the

material, and even increase risk on the worksite. The primary culprit is bleach.

Bleach is hugely effective at removing tough, stubborn stains but it’s very powerful and

can be very damaging, breaking down the fibres in the fabric. Flame retardant clothing

should be washed very gently, using a mild detergent and a low/medium setting.

"Electric arc is a complex phenomenon"

Arc flash incidents are one of the most deadly risks on the

worksite, with arc flashes able to kill at distances of as little as

10 feet. More than three quarters of those questioned in an arc

flash mitigation survey said reducing the risk of arc flash was an

essential consideration, yet only 67% of respondents stated

they had completed an analysis.

Why?

Perhaps a part of the problem is that there’s really no such thing

as an ‘arc flash analysis’. Instead, this term has been created by

combining ‘incident energy analysis’ and ‘arc flash risk

assessment’… so which one should you be focusing on? Both.

Incident energy analysis should be an integral part of an arc

flash risk assessment, and conducting this assessment is

something that all businesses working onsite with electrical

equipment should be prioritising. Under the European Council

Directive 89/391/EEC, all employers have a legal responsibility

to assess and identify the level of risk at work.

So how do you conduct an arc flash risk assessment?

There are two stages. The first stage covers the first 3 aspects

of the Health & Safety Executive’s 5-step plan for undertaking a

workplace risk assessment: identifying hazards, determining

who is at risk and how, and considering the most effective

precautions. This stage involves examining your electrical

equipment type and voltage to generate a minimum arc rating in

calories/cm2 and the overall arc flash boundary.

Conducting an arc flash risk assessment and calculating incident

energy can take time, yet it’s one of the most effective ways to

minimise risk and ensure that all workers fully understand the type

of personal protective equipment they should be wearing onsite.
