The Group Foundation’s Dynamic Mother/Daughter Duo
Trish Cleary, MS, LCPC-MFT, CGP, FAGPA, Editor, Group Assets
A
list of mother/daughter celebrity greats awakens an appreciation
for generational talent. Recall: Lucille Ball and
Lucie Arnaz; Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher; Judy
Garland and Liza Minnelli; Lee Grant and Dinah Manoff; Janet
Leigh and Jamie Lee Curtis; Diane Ladd and Laura Dern; Blythe
Danner and Gwyneth Paltrow; Goldie Hawn and Kate Hudson;
Naomi Judd and daughters Wynonna and Ashley.
Perhaps until you read this article, you have been unaware of
the Group Foundation for Advancing Mental Health (Foundation)
talented, stylish, creatively smart, and infinitely generous mother/
daughter duo. They are renowned in their own right both as individuals
and as a united pair. They, however, do not stand in the
spotlight on the AGPA stage; instead they channel tremendous
undertakings behind the scenes for our benefit.
Ruth Hochberg, PhD, CGP, DFAGPA, and her daughter
Phyllis Hochberg Siegel, Esquire, are the down-to-earth personalities
behind the AGPA Annual Meeting’s Mitchell Hochberg
Memorial Public Education Event. Together in 1986 they established
the Mitchell Hochberg Memorial Public Education Fund
to honor the memory of Ruth’s son and Phyllis’ brother, Mitchell.
Since the inaugural Mitchell Hochberg Public Education Event
at the 1988 AGPA Annual Meeting, the Foundation’s Mitchell
Hochberg Memorial Lectures have provided thousands of group
psychotherapists with outstanding presentations on contemporary
topics of interest.
My awareness of Ruth’s philanthropic generosity and her obvious
delight as a loving mother and thoughtful mentor has deepened
over the past decade at Foundation Board meetings. Informal
connections with both Ruth and Phyllis have occurred over tea
and cookies during the brief mid-afternoon breaks of our annual
in-person Foundation Board meetings.
At the 2009 AGPA Annual Meeting in San Diego, I had the
luxury of a lengthy conversation with Ruth in the comfort of the
hotel’s club lounge. I knew of her passion for AGPA and the
Group Foundation, but I knew nothing about how it presented in
her professional interests and her work as a clinician. I was fascinated
by the brilliance of her clinical focus and the scope of her
professional energy and was charmed by the intensity of her sparkling
blue eyes and lilting laugh.
Dare to read between the lines of these brief biographical
sketches, and you, too, will be amazed by the energy of this
dynamic duo and by the generous gifts Ruth and Phyllis bring to
our AGPA community.
Dr. Ruth Hochberg is in private practice in Los Angeles,
California. She held the position of Assistant Clinical Professor
at the Neuropsychiatric Institute, Department of Psychiatry and
Behavioral Sciences at UCLA, where she received honorary retirement
after 26 years of service. She was President of the California
State Psychological Association and Chairwoman of its Division
I Board of Directors. She was also Chairwoman and Trustee of
the American Psychological Association’s Insurance Trust. In
1983, Ruth received the CSPA Silver Psi Award for Outstanding
Contributions to the field of Psychology as a Professional and for
Service to the Community. She also has numerous publications in
the field of group psychotherapy.
Ruth’s involvement in AGPA leadership is exemplary. She
has been a member since 1974 and was elected to the AGPA
Board of Directors in 1979 for a three-year term and then
again in 1988 for a six-year term as Foundation Chair. She was
AGPA’s Treasurer from 1986 to 1988 and a member of the
Executive Committee from 1986 to 1994. Ruth also served as the
Chairwoman of the Board of the Group Psychotherapy Foundation
from 1988 to 1994. For over three decades, Ruth has generously
shared her group expertise with us at AGPA Annual Meetings
by leading Institute process groups as well as offering numerous
conference workshops. Furthermore, she has promoted AGPA and
the healing power of group with presentations to her varied professional
communities. It is no surprise that these efforts culminated
in Ruth’s recognition as a Distinguished Fellow in 1999 and as
AGPA’s Woman of the Year in 2000. She continues to serve as an
active member of the Foundation Board. Ruth is a generous philanthropist
with a talent for fundraising, creating scholarships, and
promoting leadership opportunities for AGPA members.
Phyllis Hochberg Siegel joined the Foundation Board of
Directors in 2003. Her initial connection to the Group Foundation
was through her mother’s passion for philanthropy, which inspired
Phyllis to take a leadership role as well. Her specific contributions
include her longtime support of the Foundation in active stewardship
of two family funds held there. She provides consultation for
the annual program selections of the Mitchell Hochberg Memorial
Public Education Fund, as well as for the awarding of the Ruth
Hochberg Training Scholarship. Her philanthropic efforts include
raising funds to ensure the sustainability of activities important to
both the Foundation and AGPA.
Ruth Hochberg could have easily taken to the AGPA stage
each year and presented the Mitchell Hochberg Memorial Lecture
on a variety of fascinating topics that would have kept us mesmerized
by the wealth of her knowledge and wisdom. Instead, she and
Phyllis choose to offer us insight into their worldview through the
remarkable presenters they support each year to inspire us. This
Foundation event at the AGPA Annual Meeting bridges the conclusion
of the AGPA two-day Annual Institute and the opening of
its three-day Annual Conference. Since its inception in 1988, the
range of inspirational topics has harnessed the influence of great
minds attuned to the significant social issues of our time. Consider
how these timeless topics remain relevant and vital today:
1988— Sexuality in a Volatile Society, presented by Ruth
Westheimer, EdD;
1992— Community Building: Using Group Principles for Peace
Making and Spiritual Growth, M. Scott Peck, MD,
Co-founder, Foundation for Community Encouragement;
1993— A Great Neuroscientist Looks at the Brain, Gerald
Edelman, MD, PhD, Director of the Neurosciences
Institute and the Chairman of the Department of
Neurobiology at the Scripps Research Institute;
1994— Mental Health as Part of National Reform: Real Reform
or More of the Same, Bernard Arons, MD, Director,
Center of Mental Health Services, Substance Abuse and
Mental Health Services Administration and Advisor on
Mental Health Issues;
1995— Have We Overcome? Thirty Years After the Mississippi
Freedom Summer of 1964, a panel which included: Unita
Blackwell, Mayor of Mayorsville, Mississippi; James
Forman, PhD, Executive Secretary of the Student Non-
Violent Coalition Committee (SNCC) at the height of the
Civil Rights Movement, Director of the Unemployment
