The UNESCO World Heritage
For a landscape, a monument or an urban ensemble to be inscribed in
the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites they need to be one thing
above all: a part of the legacy of all mankind, the heritage of the
world‘s population that needs to be protected. To date, more than
1,000 sites, monuments and natural spaces have been inscribed as the
»Heritage of Humanity« according to the rules of UNESCO, and benefit
from a specially protected status. The compact volume presents all the
World Heritage sites with superb photographs. Informative texts
provide background information, and maps help to locate each site.

UNESCO Natural Heritage
The last remaining animal paradises on earth, magnificent geological
formations and outstanding natural landscapes represent a unique
treasure and are today under the protection of the world community.
In view of the progressive destruction of the environment around the
world, the International Convention concerning the Protection of the
World’s Cultural and Natural Heritage was passed in Paris in 1972 by
the General Conference of UNESCO. This volume presents all World
Natural Heritage sites in detailed texts and impressive colour photos.

The iridescent play of light through Gothic tracery windows. Skyscrapers
gleaming in chrome. The stirring simplicity of a Cistercian abbey. The worn steps
of a Mayan pyramid. Church vaults reaching for the sky. Indian temples rich in
detailed reliefs. Buildings move us, protect us, and give us places for prayer and
devotion, for political debate and for artistic expression. Over the course of the
millennia, humankind has created lasting architectural masterpieces, stone
witnesses of epochs and rulers, of times and mores.
