FALL 2020ACADEMICSWHAT MAKES LEARNING DIFFERENT AT UP ACADEMY?“Education isnot preparationfor life;education is lifeitself.”― John DeweyCURRICULUMUnbound Potential Academy offers the progressive learning model; a flexible, personalizedcurriculum tailored to the needs of each learner. Children learn more deeply when they areasking the questions and engaging in their designed explorations in our hands-on, projectbasedenvironment. Children explore ideas, surroundings and manipulate and experimentwith tools and materials. They ask questions, follow their imagination, puzzle over theirfindings, express their understandings and come to a deeper knowledge. Curriculum units willbe infused with auditory, reading/writing, visual and kinesthetic learning styles. Students willalso have the opportunity to experience community learning trips and STEM integration.Teacher planned lessons, as well as an online learning portal, will be utilized to address theneeds of core content.MULTI-AGE CLASS SETTINGUP Academy believes in multi-age classrooms. Social skills and peer relationships aremaximized with fluid environments based on strengths and weaknesses rather than age. Thismodel enables students to develop learning communities. Learners will embrace team buildingand respect for one another's differences. Mentor teams will be developed to encourageyounger and older students to listen, affirm, set goals and hold each other accountable. Thereis both a leader and a collaborator in every child.GRADINGLearning opportunities will be referred to as“pursuits”. As students master content,reports will show missions accomplished! Thegoal will be for students to close theireducational gaps and master skills they areready for, whether it be below, on ,or abovetheir current grade level. Students willmaintain portfolios throughout the study year,in order to capture evidence of learningthroughout each pursuit.TESTINGStudents will take a norm- referenced tests(ITBS) at the beginning of the study year inorder to develop a personalized starting pointin the learning mission and again at the end ofthe study period to monitor growth andlearning. Progress reports from the learningportal, portfolio and quarterly student- ledconferences will be utilized to maintainaccurate records of the students' presentlevels of understanding. We stand apart fromschools focused on ranking and categorizingchildren according to test scores. We defineeducation in terms of an interest in diggingdeeper for answers. We measure success interms of intellectual rather than academicability.UP Academy strives to make learningmatter.
